BETTE MIDLER DIVA LAS VEGAS (1997) Review

BETTE MIDLER DIVA LAS VEGAS (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
July 2010 UPDATE: AS STATED BY OTHERS, THIS DVD WAS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH REGULAR PLAYERS USED TO BE SOLD IN THE STATES BUT READ NOTE AT THE END; THINGS HAVE CHANGED...
Diva Las Vegas was produced in Germany (under PAL Format). DIVA was filmed during Bette's last two shows of her Vegas MGM Grand performance from 1995-1996. It is a MUST HAVE for all Ms. Midler's fans. A DVD was not produced or sold in the US because of her contract with Disney during those years.
Bette starts her show with a unique & typical of her entrance; coming down from the sky in a cloud. She then proceeds with the usual welcome and sings the expected oldies including the First Wife's Club, Bed of Roses, and other great classics followed by the regular Sophie Tucker jokes with more spice than usual (remember, it's Vegas). Next, an exquisite section on Burlesque; four terrific girls and only three costumes; yeap, someone's showing more than what expected. Vegas allowed it...
The second act starts with DeLores De-Lago; the wheel chaired mermaid who then decides to become a Home Shopping TV sales-woman [competing with Joan Rivers] and promoting her "Balls" to improve physical condition. You will be surprised on how Bette masters said balls. The section concludes with eight wheel chaired mermaids performing on stage at one time, singing New York-New York.
The show continues with a love song from her native Islands; Hawaii which prepares us for the grand finale singing the famous themes & love songs from Beaches, The Rose and the rest of her classic repertoire. It ends with the introduction of the orchestra, the back-up singers, the Harlettes and the great Bobby Lyle plus an unexpected and truly emotional "encore" of three songs.
Overall, the Divine Ms. M offers in Diva Las Vegas a much more sophisticated performance than on Divine Madness and a better production than Kiss my Brass (the 2005-2006 tour). The DVD sound is excellent and the picture surprisingly great for a PAL format. Diva compiles more than two hours of continued energy from the Divine Ms. M. This is a DVD that you will watch many times and will be proud it to show your friends, relatives & neighbors.
NOTE: If you do decide on getting this very expensive Germany produced DVD, buy an affordable programmable DVD player with Multi Region capability (for $30.00 TO $70.00 or so). You might have to change the region code from 1 (USA) to 2 [Europe] or to 0 [no region] following the instructions found on the Internet. Once accomplished, the device will play DVDs from all over the world including those from Japan, Spain, Great Britain and the US. Otherwise, burn the DVD into your computer HDD and watch the VOB version over & over. BTW, many current types of software allow you to burn VOBs into Disks. You can figure out the rest...

Diva's Christmas Carol (2000) Review

Diva's Christmas Carol (2000)
Average Reviews:

A witty, musical new twist on the old classic, this VH1 production casts Vanessa Williams as a miserly and grinchy "Ebony Scrooge,". Ebony was once part of a popular 80s singing trio, but after one of the trio is killed in an auto accident, Ebony embarks on a solo career characterized by extreme narcissism and greed. While in New York for a "charity" concert, designed to benefit no one but herself, Ebony is visited by four spirits who want to make her change her wicked ways.
Suddenly Susan's Kathy Griffin gives a noteworthy performance as the sarcastic, tongue and cheek spirit of Christmas Past. Also making appearances are TLC's Chilli, John Taylor from Duran Duran, Brian McKnight and Nile Rogers.
Williams acting isn't the most fluid but her singing is superb. Her articulate vocals in the Christmas songs she sings in this movie provide some great "built in" holiday music videos. The "Sleigh Ride" sequence will quickly get you into the holiday spirit and the "Heartquake" sequence provides some humorous musical 80's nostaligia.
Vanessa Williams holiday musical numbers from this movie would make a great Christmas soundtrack and I'm very surprised VH 1 hasn't already released and marketed it.
Overall, those who love music, Christmas and/or the vocals of Vanessa Williams, will enjoy this fun remake of a treasured holiday classic.

The Beyoncé Experience - Live (2007) Review

The Beyoncé Experience - Live (2007)

Once you have seen Beyonce' Knowles live in concert, you will have a new respect for her. I had the pleasure of attending "The Beyonce' Experience" when it came to Washington, DC, and since then, I have adored her even more. When Destiny's Child released their first single, "No, No, No", it was crystal clear that Beyonce' was not only the star of the group, but also the hardest working one and the one with the most potential. With this concert on DVD, she proves my stated point. Throughout the duration of the show, Beyonce' didn't miss a beat, nor did she forget a lyric, nor did I see much sweat! She made it look so easy, and that impressed me a great deal.
When she first steps onto the stage, she asks the crowd if they are ready to be entertained. She, without a doubt, entertains for each minute of the two hours that she is performing! It's not easy to keep 20,000 people entertained for two hours, but somehow Beyonce' manages to accomplish this task.
Beyonce' performs all of her biggest hits and also gives us many doses of Destiny's Child's music. "Get Me Bodied" stands out in my mind as one of the best performances because there was non-stop choreography, very creative outfits (she had on black and yellow, hence, her nickname is Bee), and it was simply an energetic performance. "Crazy in Love", "Me, Myself and I", and "Speechless" are other highlights. I loved the simplicity of the "Flaws and All" performance. She sounded great, but she incorporated so many emotions with just one song, and it was very touching to watch (how can she make herself cry on cue, on stage??) "Irreplaceable" is another highlight. Not because she did anything fancy or gaudy, because she didn't, but I love the crowd participation she included, and I liked how she pointed random individuals out from the audience (I.E., she said, "I see you over there with that Beyonce' poster!")
In all honesty, I could go on and on boasting about this DVD, but to really bring into fruition what I am saying, you will have to see it. This concert is recommended by me, no questions. "Are you ready to be entertained?"
