Christmas Time In South Park (1997) Review

Christmas Time In South Park (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I think of Christmas the first thing that always comes to mind is Trey Parker's & Matt Stone's "South Park." These two geniuses have worked tirelessly to make "South Park" synonymous with Jesus. But really, "South Park" always has the best Christmas eps. Come to think of it, I'd have to say that "South Park" is the very best original TV program currently on the air. Everything else simply pales in comparison because this animated series mixes just the right blend of satire and comedy to form a modern-day masterpiece. All of the characters are incredibly likeable because everyone can relate to them. But, my number-one favorite character is none other than Cartman. Cartman is a total monster but he also has a very sweet side to him.
As you may know, this DVD was just released last month and is the newest "South Park" DVD; coming out just in time for Christmas! I purchased this for a good friend of mine that loves SP. He is actually out of the country traveling and hasn't seen an ep in ages so I think this would be a very welcome addition to his video library, or anyone else's for that matter. I really think that just about anyone can enjoy SP, like the back of the jacket says, "gather' round the fire and watch these classic 'South Park' episodes."
There are a total of 7 eps, included on 1 disc. As usual, the picture and sound quality is amazing and these are the original episodes that you remember from Comedy Central!
Here's all the eps that "Christmas Time in South Park" includes:
Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo, air date: December 17, 1997
This show is from Season 1 . In this X-mas-themed show the kids put on a Christmas play. When Kyle's mom hears about it she is livid. You may recall, in this ep, Cartman sings his famous song in honor of Mrs. Broflovski.
Merry Christmas Charlie Manson, air date: December 9, 1998
This ep is from Season 2 . The boys travel with Cartman and his mom to Eric's relatives for Christmas. While there, they meet up with Charlie Manson.
Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics, air date: December 1, 1999
This ep is from Season 3 . The show is hosted by none other than Mr. Hankey who introduces various Christmas songs. This ep was in honor of Mary Kay Bergman (best known as the original voice of Shelley Marsh,) who committed suicide shortly before this was broadcast.
A Very Crappy Christmas, air date: December 20, 2000
This ep is from Season 4 . When Mr. Hankey doesn't show up the boys go down into the sewer to look for him. In this classic Christmas ep, we get introduced to Mr. Hankey's entire family.
Red Sleigh Down, air date: December 11, 2002
This ep is from Season 6 . The boys go along with Santa and Jesus to Iraq on a Christmas adventure. But as usual, all Cartman is concerned about is himself.
It's Christmas in Canada, air date: December 17, 2003
This ep is from Season 7 . The boys travel to Canada to get Kyle's little bother back. Take special notice when Eric and Kyle fight. It's so funny when Eric screams, "meeehm" just like a little b**ch!
Woodland Critter Christmas, air date: December 15, 2004
This ep is from Season 8 . Kyle is caught up in a Christmas fairytale with those cute little Woodland Critters. I'd say out of all the SP Christmas eps this one is by far the most disturbing!
HO, HO, HO!!!

A Christmas Carol (1984) Review

A Christmas Carol (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Christmas just isn't Christmas unless you watch at least one version of A Christmas Carol, and this is by far my favorite. George C. Scott gives one of the greatest performances I have ever seen an actor give; he truly becomes Ebenezer Scrooge to the fullest degree possible. Scott can say more with just the slightest hint of a facial movement than many actors can say during the course of an entire movie. All of the performers here are excellent, bringing to life adored characters such as Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and Scrooge's nephew Fred. All four spirits are remarkable, none more so than Scrooge's old partner Jacob Marley; having Marley's jaw drop after untying the burial cloth holding his mouth closed is an important aspect of the story and certainly does make an impression on the viewer. This is just one example of the moviemakers' faithfulness to Charles Dickens' original story; another would be the inclusion of the two miserable children, Ignorance and Want, beneath the robes of the Ghost of Christmas Present.
This timeless tale works extremely well on its own, but the unsurpassed acting skills of Scott make it almost more than real. The change wrought in him during the course of the night, as he changes from a man of crass materialism and unkindness to a repentant soul pleading for a chance to change his ways, is powerfully presented and really touches the viewer emotionally. The simple happiness revealed in the lives of Bob Cratchit and others are as heart-warming as the forgotten mistakes and pains of a younger Scrooge are agonizing. If there is any heart out there that is not touched by the goodness and courage of Tiny Tim, I don't even want to know about it. No matter how many times you watch this movie, it proves itself capable of bringing a tear to your eye, a lump in your throat, and ultimately the very spirit of true holiday cheer and Christian charity that Dickens intended it to convey.
I cannot say I have seen every adaptation of A Christmas Carol, but I really cannot believe any other version could exceed the quality and emotional impact of this one. No matter how many times I read the story or watch the movie, it remains a source of eternal joy to me. This is more than a movie for me; it is an important and necessary part of each and every Christmas holiday season.

Christmas elicits nothing more than "Bah, humbug!" from Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott), a miser whose sole pursuit of financial success has left him a bitter and lonely old man. But a ChristmasEve visit from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future ultimately teaches him to open his heart to the spirit of Christmas and to the joys of friends and family.

Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town/The Little Drummer Boy (1970) Review

Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town/The Little Drummer Boy (1970)
Average Reviews:

I am so pleased to see these two Christmas specials packaged on one disk. What a great holiday treat.
"Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" is an animagic classic. Fred Astaire pulls up the holiday express to narrate the story of young Kris Kringle (Mickey Rooney)and the children of Sombertown, and the story of how Kris became known as Santa Claus. Kris meets the evil Winter Warlock and melts his icy heart. The Burgermeister Meisterburger will not be so easy. This is a true holiday treat, and covers all of the familiar ground. Why do reindeer fly? Why does Santa climb down chimneys and leave toys in stockings? Why does he wear a beard and red clothing? How does he know if you've are sleeping, know if your awake? And what is Mrs.. Claus name, anyways? Find out in this DVD.
"The Little Drummer Boy" is based on one of my favorite holiday tunes. Aaron, the little drummer boy, is filled with hatred for all people. His parents have been murdered and his home burned to the ground. However, his gift for drumming enchants the animals and they dance about when he plays. Based on this talent, he falls in with a bad crowd when he meets Ben Haramed, the King of the Desert Showmen. How do things turn out for Aaron? Listen to the song, and watch the DVD. Bah-rump-bum-bum-bummmm.

Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town\n This 53-minute, 1970 animated film may be the most delightful of those sundry, stop-motion animated Christmas perennials that show up on television during the holidays. The clay animation production, boasting a wonderful musical score and art direction that occasionally underscores the flower-power era in which it was born, tells the story of Santa's origins, in which Kris Kringle decides to get toys into the hands of poor children in gloomy Sombertown. Charmingly narrated by Fred Astaire and featuring voices by Mickey Rooney and Keenan Wynn, "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" presents a nice bridge between two generations of entertainment, the classic and the hip. "--Tom Keogh"\n\n "The Little Drummer Boy"\n The model animation techniques in this 1968 Rankin and Bass TV chestnut are primitive by today's standards, and picky kids may reject them out of hand. The story, however, which elaborates on the popular Christmas song about a shepherd boy who plays his drum for the baby Jesus and makes the animals dance, is a little more tough-minded than you might expect. The kid begins the story as what we'd now call a neglected child, a surly urchin who says he hates all people. He's pulled back from the brink, first by learning to make music, and then by his encounter with the Christ child. The underlying message alone--that everybody has something worth contributing--qualifies the show for holiday-perennial status. The big-name voice performers, Jose Ferrer and Greer Garson (who narrates), may be a little too ponderous for the occasion, but the familiar cartoony tones of Paul Frees (aka Boris Badenov) and June Forey (aka Rocket J. Squirrel) help liven up the proceedings. It's only 23 minutes long, so it's worth a shot for younger children. "--David Chute"

Outlaw Trail: The Treasure of Butch Cassidy (2006) Review

Outlaw Trail: The Treasure of Butch Cassidy (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Set in 1950s Utah and filmed on location there, "Outlaw Trail: The Treasure of Butch Cassidy" depicts 16-year old Roy Parker's search for the truth about his great-uncle, the infamous real-life Western outlaw Butch Cassidy (the alias of LeRoy Parker). The fatherless youth must overcome the opposition of his determined granddad, who scolds him, "I spent the better part of my life trying to live down the reputation that your hero has laid out for the Parker name and you grow up worshipping him." After a jailbreak engineered by Jess, his best friend, Roy and Jess are joined by two other teens in a chase for Cassidy's buried treasure, pursued by dangerous criminals. Superb cinematography takes full advantage of Utah's rugged scenery in exciting chase sequences by automobile, river raft, steam train, and even airplane. Roy Parker is played by handsome Ryan Kelley, familiar to viewers of the "Smallville" TV series. Only an implausible ending detracts from this entertaining family film, suitable for all ages.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) Review

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
Average Reviews:

Many kids
Enjoy Christmas
They like it a lot
And this film
Is about the Grinch
Who did not
The film gives the background, and fills in some blanks
The Grinch as a child was subjected to pranks
He fancied a Who, with the name Martha May
He tried to impress her and to his dismay
They laughed at his efforts, his gift and his face
So he destroyed the classroom and fled from that place
Then,
He moved to Mount Crumpet
And made him a home
While the green hairy creature seethed under the dome
Until one cold day at the town Christmas party
When young Cindy Lou showed him how to be hearty
Then Mayor May-Who went and spoiled all the fun
By taunting the Grinch 'til he came all undone
He went up his mountain, and he started scheming
And when he was through he was smiling and beaming
He'd ruin their Christmas; he knew what to do
Revenge is the sweetest when it's overdue
If you've read the story you know how it ends
How the Grinch stole that Christmas from his former friends
So what happened next?
I won't give it away
This Christmas this movie will show every day
So if you're a Grinch you can run, but not hide
As you try to stifle the feeling inside
Just gather the kids for a clean yuletide treat
Merry Christmas to all!

Classic Christmas Cartoons Review

Classic Christmas Cartoons
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Classic Christmas Cartoons" is an almost-duplicate of the now out-of-print "A Cute Cavalcade of Classic Christmas Cartoons." The only real difference is that this DVD has 7 cartoons, rather than "A Cute Cavalcade...'s" 12 cartoons.
Each of these cartoons are good fun, and true "classics." The real standouts of the collection are the Fleischer Bros. cartoons, and Ub Iwerk's spooky "Jack Frost." Being from the 30's and 40's, several of them are depression-influenced, showing sad-eyed orphans and poor kids lusting for Christmas treats, and may contain a few stereotypes of an unpleasant nature, but nothing terribly shocking.
Definitely for lovers of old cartoons only, or very young children who don't mind the different styles and slightly odd characters.
The DVD is of poor quality, which is expected for such ancient cartoons. Restoration takes money, and this collection of public domain prints is just to get them out there. Nothing fancy, but nice to have in any format.
The seven cartoons are:
Jack Frost (Ub Iwerks, 1934)
Christmas Comes But Once a Year (Dave Fleischer, 1936)
Somewhere in Dreamland (Dave Fleischer, 1936)
Santa's Surprise (Seymour Kneitel, 1947)
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Max Fleischer, 1948)
Hector's Hectic Life (Bill Tytla, 1948)
Snow Foolin' (Izzy Sparber, 1949)

Diva's Christmas Carol (2000) Review

Diva's Christmas Carol (2000)
Average Reviews:

A witty, musical new twist on the old classic, this VH1 production casts Vanessa Williams as a miserly and grinchy "Ebony Scrooge,". Ebony was once part of a popular 80s singing trio, but after one of the trio is killed in an auto accident, Ebony embarks on a solo career characterized by extreme narcissism and greed. While in New York for a "charity" concert, designed to benefit no one but herself, Ebony is visited by four spirits who want to make her change her wicked ways.
Suddenly Susan's Kathy Griffin gives a noteworthy performance as the sarcastic, tongue and cheek spirit of Christmas Past. Also making appearances are TLC's Chilli, John Taylor from Duran Duran, Brian McKnight and Nile Rogers.
Williams acting isn't the most fluid but her singing is superb. Her articulate vocals in the Christmas songs she sings in this movie provide some great "built in" holiday music videos. The "Sleigh Ride" sequence will quickly get you into the holiday spirit and the "Heartquake" sequence provides some humorous musical 80's nostaligia.
Vanessa Williams holiday musical numbers from this movie would make a great Christmas soundtrack and I'm very surprised VH 1 hasn't already released and marketed it.
Overall, those who love music, Christmas and/or the vocals of Vanessa Williams, will enjoy this fun remake of a treasured holiday classic.

Yogi's First Christmas (1980 TV Special)
Average Reviews:

I am surprised none of the cartoon buffs have commmented on this cartoon.
Yogi's First Christmas has become one of the beloved Christmas specials since it aired.
It features all the characters created by Hanna-Barbera and has a pretty good story.
Story borrows a bit from the Grinch who stole Christmas.
Snively an evil character, and a character known as Herman
Hermit are attempting to close down JellyStone National Park
and place the blame of it's failure on Yogi Bear.
Ranger Smith gives Yogi Bear the boot, but Yogi and
others plan a way to save Jellystone using the old
Christmas spirit.
This animated film is a classic.
Daws Butler as Yogi Bear will always be remembered
as a great actor who provided the voice for one
of the most cherished character of all time,
Yogi Bear.
Of course the special comes complete with all the Christmas songs one would expect.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve Review

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trans-Siberian Orchestra. One great band, one amazing concept. This DVD contains music taken from the bands first two albums. (Christmas Eve and Other Stories & The Christmas Attic.) The DVD contains a nice mix of the bands original music + a great little story intertwined to go along with it. The story is that of a run-away girl who, to escape the cold one night enters an abandoned theater. Inside she meets The Caretaker, played by Ossie Davis. While inside he introduces her to an amazing show only the likes of angels (actually the spirits and ghosts of the theater) could have performed. The show is that of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In the act they are joined by Jewel singing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," and by Michael Crawford singing "O Holy Night." The Caretaker uses the imagery of the show to help the girl to change her life. Such songs as "Good King Joy," "Music Box Blues," "This Christmas Day," and "Christmas Canon" are performed to wonderful amazement. As well, on some songs the band is joined by a beautiful children's choir. Hearing them alone will bring a tear to your eye. Some complain about the length of the DVD. Sure, it may only be 46 minutes long, but it is a 46 minute adventure that is well worth it. The disc lacks in the special feature area, but there is a complete discography and a bonus track; the `Timeless Version' of "Christmas In Sarajevo." I highly recommend this DVD. The T.S.O. have done an excellent job of telling a story while showing the kind of music they produce. The tale is heart-warming, the music is emotionally intense and this is one DVD that is good any time of the year. And the best part is that you can share with others besides the ghosts on Christmas Eve.

All About Steve (2009) Review

All About Steve (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
People Magazine gave this a 1/2 star out of 5. It truly wasn't that bad.
Here are my thoughts.
Sandra Bullock's character is awkward and that is an understatement. This still-at-home-with-mom-and-dad crossword-puzzle-creator is an unique blend of Cliff Clavin (Cheers) Napoleon Dynamite and Pippi Longstocking. I struggled with whether to like Mary and cheer her on or to just be annoyed and laugh at her when she fell into the big hole. I ended up doing both.
Basic plot: Mary, due to outside pressures, thinks she needs to take her one last shot of normalcy by embracing (understatement) a blind date. When he comes to pick her up and turns out to be "hot" she does this creepy silent stare thing and runs back upstairs to put some sexy on. A truly awkward scene follows when she jumps Steve (Bradley Cooper), not after an okay date but before they even pull away from her folks' house. At first Steve is dazzled by the skin and enthusiasm but then he begins to think she might be crazy so he invents an excuse...a phone call sending him away. While he's attempting to get her out of the van before she truly goes crazy he mentions wishing she could go with him. More circumstances make that a possibility. Some may call it stalking, Mary calls it many, many other things in long paragraphs and polysyllabic words.
Mary is not just a person who talks all the time -- she's a walking encyclopedia of random facts -- and she ends up alienating loads of people on her quest to find Steve. Then she becomes a hero, accidentally, of course. Thomas Haden Church plays the annoying, selfish anchorman wanna-be and he eggs Mary on. Though I wasn't sure what his motivation was exactly his encouragement got Mary to relentlessly pursue Steve. Most of the characters are oddly eccentric, almost cartoonish, from Mary's parents to Haden Church's nemesis. It was almost as if the movie was an attempt to tell a quirky feel good story blended with a parody. It's one of the stranger films I've seen.
Content warnings. The groping scene in the beginning 20 minutes of so of the movie goes on too long and it should be screened before child/young teen viewing. That probably won't be an issue though since most children will likely get bored. Several sexual references are scattered throughout the film. One news story that Steve chases down involves a fight over amputating a baby girl's third leg and there are a few obvious body part innuendo/references. Some language. Some skin, mostly cleavage.
There are several amusing one-liners and descriptives and a pretty sweet tornado besides some great physical comedy and pratfalls. A few scenes are laugh-out-loud funny. Many, many more are shake-the-head shrug inspiring. I'll give it a 3 and I'll probably watch it again when it hits DVD, if for no other reason, to see if I understand it a little better. Maybe it will have that Napoleon Dynamite magic. I didn't like it the first time I watched it either.

Come to the Stable (1949) Review

Come to the Stable (1949)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Loretta Young, one of Hollywood's most respected actresses had one of her greatest roles as the assured and determined Sister Margaret in Twentieth Century Fox's 1949 "Come to the Stable" a beautiful story of two women's determination and sheer belief in the rightness of what they are seeking in their work for others. Loretta Young, a staunch catholic in real life is one of those rare actresses in a league with the likes of Ingrid Bergman, Deborah Kerr and Audrey Hepburn , that seem totally convincing as nuns whether it be in their displays of humility in portraying their characters or just by the total immersion that they undergo when taking on the nun role.
"Come to the Stable" tells a very simple but extremely moving story based on a short story by Clare Booth Luce, of the journey that two nuns, one American and one french, make to fulfill a solemn vow made during World War 2. Resulting from the fact that through prayer to St. Jude, the Patron Saint of lost causes, their hospital was spared destruction by the advancing forces the two make a vow to return to America to set up a similiar hospital for young infants in Bethlehem, Connecticut where they have learnt of a woman who paints very beautiful religious paintings. After finding the right place atop a serene hill with perfect views of the town the nuns with very little money, very few propects and with a strong unquestioning faith proceed to achieve everything that has become their lifes work. Their journey from a hopeless situation with no funds to build the hospital or obtain the land, to one that inspires others to get involved to achieve the dream of the new hospital makes for inspirational viewing and puts across the strong message of the basic good of all people if you only take the time to look for it. In their drive to fulfill their aim the nun's encounter some interesting characters who's lives they alter in very positive ways. Miss Potts played by Elsa Lancaster in a wonderful performance is a lonely spinister who loves to paint and finds her whole life turned upside down by the unexpected arrival of the nuns on her door step. She for the first time finds a real purpose to her existence as she involves herself totally in the plans of Sister Margaret and Sister Scholastica (Celeste Holm). In their search for land to build the church on the sisters find themselves travelling to New York where they encounter small time con man Luigi Rossi who after hearing their story not only gives them a sizable donation but also the deed to the land with the promise that a commerative stained glass window will be installed in memory of his son who was lost in the war not far from where the sisters nursed in Northern France. His transformation from a small time hood to a man with a conscience is only one of the miracles that the nuns work in their dealings with others. Hugh Marlowe plays the nuns new and indeed quite unhappy neighbour Robert Mason who despite being against the idea of a hospital literally in his backyard finds himself helping the nuns and in a crucial situation where the nuns find themselves short of financing for their repayments, chips in and ensures the sisters dream becomes a reality.
Directed with a sentimental but sure hand by veteran director Henry Koster who was responsible for such diverse efforts as "Harvey", "Flower Drum Song"' and "The Robe", the representation of what strong belief can do to achieve great things either big or small in ones life is always the central theme of "Come to the Stable". Loretta Young as Sister Margaret was an inspirational choice as the lead in a role originally intended for Irene Dunne. She is everything a nun should be, strong, gracious, determined, and a firm believer in the basic good in man. Her's is a superb performance which quite rightly received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actress. Equally honoured is the beautifully unplayed performance of Celeste Holm in the role of French nun Sister Scholastica, Sister Margaret's helper who in a comical moment reveals herself in a past life to have been a top class French tennis player in a scene where she is forced to play in full nun's habit for high stakes, namely a large badly needed donation to the building fund!
Such beautifully put together films as "Come to the Stable" often make me wonder what Hollywood is really doing nowadays as such delicate themes as guiding faith and divine providence, would not be able to be made nowadays what with the harsh reality of most modern screenplays. I never fail to be touched by this story or by the wonderful performance by Loretta Young in the lead. It is a heart warming viewing experience for anyone who has ever had avow to fulfill or a dream to pursue. Watch this film and be inpired as I always am to try and fulfill my dreams while enjoying an terrific excursion back to movie making as it used to be.

Originally aired in 2007 as a tv movie on ABC Family's "25 Days of Christmas" package, Christina Milian stars as a harried single woman living in the same apartment building as her overbearing Italian mother, played by the Soprano's shrink Lorraine Bracco. Christina works at her mother's deli as well, and fantasizes about escaping to the perfect community. A package arrives for her that contains a mysterious snowglobe. One night after her family tries to take over her apartment, even trying to force her to move to a smaller apartment in the building, she retreats to her bedroom to study her newfound toy. She shakes it, and is magically transported to a "perfect" place, where everyday is preparing for Christmas. But soon she begins to realize it's not so perfect after all, though nothing sinister is going on. Then her friend in this fantasy land manages to come through to her world, and the misadventures begin. Along the way, she realizes her life isn't so bad after all, and her boyfriend in real life might just be Mr. Right.
Although children under 10 might not understand Christina's adult problems, it should be suitable for all family members.

Santa Baby Review

I wasn't expecting much when this movie came up on one of my cable channels recently. I was flipping by it and got caught up in a moment and found myself watching it to the end. Santa has a daughter, a work-a-holic business woman who left "Polaris" and her family's lifestyle behind. When her father falls ill, it's up to her to step in and take over the Christmas demands. Her way of doing business is very different from her fathers. Lots of fun and all the classic "feel good" scenarios to be found. Definitely worth adding to the holiday viewing line-up!

Jack Frost (1998) Review

Jack Frost (1998)

This movie is a bit of a departure for Michael Keaton.. 1. It's a family movie, that younger kids will really click to. 2. Michael Keaton also sings a few tunes in his rock band, I found that a biut interesting.
The whole story revolves around a Father, and his son. The father never has enough time for his child,, and dies suddenly in a car wreck. Michael Keaton come back to Earth as a Snowman, and find that he has to spend some time with his boy. Winter doesn't last forever though, and it does have a sad ending.
