Hercules: The Legendary Journeys - Season One Review

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys - Season One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you already own the Anchor Bay (AB from here on out) release of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" - Season 1 you may want to hang onto it.
This release has only the series. The 5 made-for-tv movie "specials" which introduced the character and truly started the series are *not* included. These were on the AB season 1 release. There is no word on whether these will be available separately.
The AB release had the 13 season episodes on 4 disks while this release uses only 3. This indicates there will be more compression, but the jury's still out on whether or not the episodes have been cleaned up beyond what AB did.
On the AB release, the sound was remixed into a 5.1 Dolby Digital while this release is 2.0 (which was the original sound mix). This may or may not be a drawback depending on your outlook.
The primary draw for this release is the use of subtitles which the AB release did not have (the major drawback of the AB release IMHO). A second attraction is the use of a standard keep-case instead of the massive fold-out digipak AB used.
So... better packaging and subtitles appear to be the "extras" for this release.
If you're a fan and don't already own the AB set this is highly recommended even though the price seems a bit high for only 13 episodes. You may want to seek out a AB season 1 set depending on price as it also includes the TV movies.
If you are looking for a true historical take on Hercules, don't start here as the myth is played very loose with many inaccuracies and *lots* of anachronism. But if you're looking for a good clean (although it *does* have its fair share of innuendo) action/adventure series with lots of campy humor, and ninja-like fight scenes... look no further. Yes, it does have some violence and innuendo, but it's fairly innocuous and frankly less than what I've seen on "kids" cartoons lately. Watching a few episodes of Hercules is a great way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon.
4 stars because the 5 made-for-tv movies, which truly belong with season 1, are not included.

Beastmaster: Complete Collection Review

Beastmaster: Complete Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is for "Beastmaster: Complete Collection" 18 Disc DVD Set
September 29, 2008: "ADV Replies To Inquiry About The Scarcity Of 'Beastmaster: Complete Collection'."
I received an email from ADV concerning the scarcity of this DVD set, which I have placed, along with my email to them, in the comments [9/30/08--I have also copied a notice posted on tvshowsondvd.com concerning the cancellation of this set]. I was deeply saddened to read that the available copies are essentially "mistakes;" and those of us that have them are more than a little lucky. I can only iterate what the customer service rep states: "Hopefully ADV will be able to release this in the future." For all of you who have not been able to find it, I suggest writing to ADV encouraging them to release the set--squeaky wheals usually get greased!
Andre Norton's (noms de plume for author Alice Mary Norton) "Beast Master," first published in 1959, established themes that were common to many of her books: 1) the plot takes place in the open countryside, with only short episodes in a city environment. Protagonists usually move about singly or in small groups, and in conflict situations they are more often scouts, spies or guerillas rather than regular soldiers in large military formations; 2) locations are usually earth like places, where humans can live without special protection, and have extensive flora and fauna which are described in considerable detail and often have substantial bearing on the plot; 3) the presence of sympathetically presented feudal and tribal cultures (particularly Navajo culture); and, 4) the important role of animals--both ordinary ones, such as cats, and exotic fictional ones, like unicorns, whose characteristics are meticulously worked out. The animals are often highly intelligent without being anthropomorphic, acting as virtually full partners to the human protagonists and frequently they form telepathic links with each other. AND THESE THEMES ARE THE BEST DESCRIPTION OF "BEASTMASTER" POSSIBLE.
While the character in the book, Hosteen Storm, travels between planets within the context of these themes, the story line establishes the basis for the first movie, "Beastmaster" (1982). In the movie, the main character, Dar, plays out the themes within the context of a fantasy story set in an imaginary world of sorcery and magic: Dar, with the help of a "companions" Seth and Kiri, seeks "vengeance" against warlord/sorcerer Maax. "Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time" (1991) renews the interplanetary nature of the book as Dar travels to earth, and its inherent "evil," technology, and lack "earthliness." Then in "Beastmaster: The Eye of Braxus" (1996) Dar, while wandering with his animal companions, chances to meet and "rescue" a family who seek the help of King Tal, Dar's brother and "King," against Lord Agon, a sorcerer who has conquered their land.
"Beastmaster: Complete Collection" (1999-2002), then, with some minor changes, picks up the story of Dar after the lands have been ransacked and Dar's family and tribe have been essentially wiped out. Employing Andre Norton's four basic themes, the television series' arcs parallel the plots of the three movies (which may be why both the second movie and the second season are often seen as the weakest by some). The arc of the first season tells the story of Dar (played by Daniel Goddard): (1) Dar finding out about who he is and what his hopes and dreams are; (2) Dar forming his "new family"--Ru, a tiger friend; Koto and Poto, two expelled ferret friends; Sharak, who was once a man (played by Daniel Fitzgerald), but was turned into an eagle because of his deep love for the Sorceress (played by Monika Schnarre); Curupira (played by Emilie de Ravin), a demon who is the guardian of all the animals and has granted Dar his ability to speak with the animals; and Tao (i.e., Seth), played by Jackson Raine, who is sort of trickster character with knowledge of plants and "Science;" (3) Dar's search for his soul mate, Kyra (i.e., Kiri), played by Natalie Jackson Mendoza--who is first captured by King Zad, played by Steven Grives, and then hidden by The Ancient One, played by Grahame Bond; and (4) Dar recognizing and attempting to understand the idea (also the over riding series arc) that the world is changing, civilization is advancing, technology is gaining ground slowly, the old orders of magic and sorcery are fading, and the world is threatened by the supernatural being Balcifer, the Dark One, played by Jeremy Callaghan.
The arc of the second season, as with the second movie, finds Dar and his companions coming dangerously close to loosing to the spread of "civilizations" or material culture, the damage of technologically "advanced" tribes, and the losses of Kyra (killed in the last episode of season one), Curupira, and the Sorceress--although he gains a new friend in a former enemy, Arina, played by Marjean Holden. Tao's ways of logic and science increasingly challenge and intercede into Dar's world; indeed, Xinca (visually looking like an Inca city) becomes the focus of many of the episodes, rather than the "outdoors/forests." "Tribal" customs are caving in face of rampant "civilized" materialism and greed. Dar's ability to be the Beastmaster is constantly challenged and eroded by events and actions precipitated by others.
The third season arc, like the third movie, brings the story full circle, as Dar finds out from Dartanus (played by Marc Singer, who "poetically" played Dar in the three movies), a Spirit Warrior, who informs Dar that he is really the son of King Eldar, who was killed by Balcifer the last time he attempted to take over the world (the first "Beastmaster" movie?). As such, Dar is the only person who can stop Balcifer, the Dark One, from taking over the world by "rescuing" his family, who were turned into animals by his father to protect them from Balcifer's previous attempt to take over the world. Again, this all occurs within the context of Andre Norton's four themes.
"Beastmaster: Complete Collection" is fantasy cinema at its best. The stories are often fantastical, humorous, educational, and entertaining--like any great "tribal" or "trickster" story. Episodes frequently include stock footage of various wildlife that adds to the vastness of the story. Season 2 and 3 have some interesting question and answer bonus features with Danial Goddard. The only real blemish is with the DVD editing, as the breaks for commercials are frequently poorly done. If you are looking for good, fun, entertainment, "Beastmaster: Complete Collection" is top notch. I have contacted ADV Films to inquire as to why this set is out of print already, as it just came out on August 5, 2008! So, hopefully, I can update this with their "justification" for not making this set more available.
If this review was not helpful to you, I would appreciate learning the reason(s) so I can improve my reviews. My goal is to provide help to potential buyers, not get into any arguments. So, if you only disagree with my opinion, could you please say so in the comments and not indicate that the review was not helpful. Thanks.

Barbie Movie Collection Review

Barbie Movie Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has the first four Barbie movies in one, they are Nutcracker, Rapunzel, Swan Lake, and the best one ever - The Princess and the Pauper. It is a good mix of Barbie singing and dancing. The quality of the animation and the storys get better as they go on with the Princess and the pauper songs etc the best. There is some great humour in that one too which the kids really enjoy.
Hours of fun in here which will keep your little girl occupied. Also nice dancing in the first two (Nutcracker and Swan Lake). What I like about these movies is Barbie is very capable, she is intelligent and tries to help others. I know it probably sounds trite, but I like the fact that the movies teach good ethics to kids, about being part of a community, and respecting others.

Harry Potter Years 1-3 (2002) Review

Harry Potter Years 1-3 (2002)
Average Reviews:

I was very disappointed in this boxed set. The movies, of course, are great but this boxed set was a big rip off. The only reason I didn't return it was because I promised someone my original copies of the first two movies. I already own the first two Harry Potter movies in their beautiful cardboard slipcovers. I was expecting this boxed set to have some continuity. Instead all they did was put the third movie (in a plastic case!) in a fancy box with the first two movies in their original (cardboard!) packaging. If you already own the first two movies do not waste your money buying this set. Just buy the third movie. You can always find your own box to put them in. If you want a boxed set, wait five or six years until all of the movies are released and buy it then. Maybe the packaging will be better. Yes Wolf, the third movie is in a plastic slip case not the nicer cardboard slipcase.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie / Turbo - A Power Rangers Movie (1995) Review

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie / Turbo - A Power Rangers Movie (1995)
Average Reviews:

Wow! The Power Rangers on DVD! Never before have the Power Rangers looked so good! I don't even know where to begin, but here goes! First, the contents of this dvd. Both Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie and Turbo A Power Rangers Movie are here. This disc is a dual-layer disc, with one movie per side. Each movie is in widescreen format (YEAH!), and each movie is accompanied by the theatrical trailer and featurette. It's not loaded with extras, but since you're getting two awesome movies on one disc for a fair price, it's hard to complain. As for the films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie is the first theatrical production of the Power Rangers series. The Rangers in this movie are Tommy, Kimberly, Adam, Billy, Aisha and Rocky. MMPR The Movie is good fun, with cool action sequences and neat costumes. The only draw back to this film is that it strays from its Sentai roots by giving the Rangers vinyl outfits and replacing their Mega Zord with a poorly designed computer graphic one. Besides those minor discrepancies though, this movie is great for Power Rangers fans. Next, Turbo Power Rangers, is my personal favorite of the two. The Rangers in this film are Tommy, Kat, Adam, Tanya, and Justin (who replaces Rocky). However, the highlight of this movie is the return of the ORIGINAL POWER RANGERS, Jason and Kimberly, although they don't suit up as Rangers. Thankfully, this movie does not stray far from its Sentai roots, as the Rangers faithfully maintain the costumes and Zords of their Japanese counter-parts, and all other elements you've come to expect from a Power Rangers spectacle are there. All in all, this dvd is great bang for your buck and awesome entertainment for those who enjoy light-fare, Sentai, sci-fi action. I highly recommend it for the kid in the family or the kid in you. It'll surely put a smile on your face : )

The Shrek Trilogy (Shrek / Shrek 2 / Shrek the Third) (Full Screen Edition) (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As someone who enjoys the Shrek movies, I'm really disappointed in this box set. Before this I didn't own the first two movies, and thought this was a great deal for all three. I thought it would make me a cool uncle to have all three movies when my nephew visits.
The problem is I should have paid close attention to the screen format when ordering. I wrongly took it to mean that it was going to be in a wide screen format since it didn't specify full screen in the title. If I watched DVDs on a standard TV that might not be such a big deal, but I own a HDTV with an up-converting DVD player and prefer watching wide screen formated movies on it. They just look better on the screen.
Sadly Amazon does not offer this set in a wide screen format. So I'm either going to make do with the set I just ordered. Or, I'll have to order each movie separately if I want them in the wide screen format.

"The James Bond Gift Set" is a wonderful combination of Bond movies. The set contains "Goldfinger," "Thunderball," "Live and Let Die," "For Your Eyes Only," "Licence To Kill," "Goldeneye," and "Tommorrow Never Dies." The rest of the Bond movies will be in two different sets, the first is coming out in May 2000, the second sometime in fall 2000. For those wondering like myself before I got it there is no special intro before the movies as in for example The Star Wars Special Edition Set, but you still get exciting 007 entertainment while watching these 7 classic Bond films.

Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season (2007) Review

Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alternately funny and whimsical, PUSHING DAISIES is a visually distinctive romantic comedy that encompasses a truly winning mix of ingredients. With its modern fairy tale settings and exploding color schemes - along with perfect but unobtrusive narration by Broadway veteran Jim Dale - comparisons to the work of Tim Burton are all but unavoidable. (In a good way.)
As in his previous outing (DEAD LIKE ME), series creator Bryan Fuller explores the great beyond but this time the results are much more impressive. The entire series centers around Ned (an utterly charming Lee Pace), who - at an early age - discovers that he possesses the power to bring the dead back to life with just a touch of his finger. The tradeoff? If he touches that person again, they will remain dead forever. And leaving the dead resurrected for longer than a minute causes someone else in the immediate vicinity to die. Cruel? Perhaps. But the universe demands a cosmic balance - and this is its solution.
Ned - the owner of a fairly successful pie shop known as `The Pie Hole' - uses his unique gift to earn a living in two ways: His astonishing pies, where his special touch invigorates the fruit with incredible flavor; and helping a detective (Chi McBride), who accidentally witnessed Ned's gift first-hand, solve murder cases. How? He revives the victims long enough to find out who killed them and then the two of them split the reward money. This can, and usually does, lead to near dangerous adventures for the two of them. Sounds exciting - but as Ned's co-worker Olive (the adorable Kristin Chenoweth of Broadway's WICKED) points out, it's a detached, emotionally frigid existence.
That is, until Charlotte enters his life again.
Charlotte or "Chuck" as she is called (played by Brit actress Anna Friel), is the girl Ned loved as a child before she moved away. When Ned and the detective discover the murdered Chuck on one of their cases, Ned brings her back to life for a sizable reward but can't bring himself to kill her, creating this dilemma: Although Ned and Chuck are strongly drawn to each other, they can never, EVER touch.
PUSHING DAISIES is loaded with stars from film, TV and the stage (Paul Ruebens, Raul Esparza, Molly Shannon, Swoosie Kurtz, Ellen Greene, Christopher Seiber, Barbara Barrie, Grant Shaud - to name but a few), and it's clear that everyone is having a marvelous time. The series is filled with tons of clever touches and Lee Pace, full of childlike vulnerability, is an immensely likable lead. His palpable longing for Anna Friel's Chuck is both sweet and touching. Seldom, however, has a series predicated on keeping two characters romantically apart established such a seemingly insurmountable barrier to insure that they remain that way.
As long as the creators can sustain the high level of entertainment that the first (as of this writing) nine episodes have provided, one can only pray that this highly original and gorgeous looking television experiment keeps going for years to come.

Every not-so-often, along comes a show that's different. Wonderfully different. Pushing Daisies, TV Guide's Matt Roush writes, "restores my faith in TV's ability to amuse, enchant and entertain." It's the story of Ned, a lonely pie maker whose touch can reanimate the dead. Cool, but there's a hitch. If Ned touches the person again, the miracle is reversed. If he doesn't, a bystander goes toes up. What to do? Easy: Team with a private eye, bring murder victims back just long enough to discover whodunit, and collect the rewards. Things go well until Ned's boyhood sweetie is the next dear departed, and he can't resist bringing her back for keeps! Dig the wit, style and quirky romance: If you're not laughing, you may need a visit from Ned.

Land of the Lost - The Complete First Season (1974) Review

Land of the Lost - The Complete First Season (1974)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wah Chang and Gene Warren were two VERY famous OSCAR winners for special effects in the original George Pal production of "The Time Machine" in 1960. They also did work on "The Outer Limits" for those that remember that sci-fi show. These legends were called upon once again to work in this landmark television series for kids that was a part of Saturday morning programs meant to stimulate the imagination and entertain. There were also quality writers gathered from Science fiction to write some of the plots that you will see here in this first season of shows. In describing the show it is much like a children's version of a Doctor Who adventure. Short on budget but excellent in imaginative designs and well written plots. So, like Doctor Who, you have to ignore the low budget stage pieces and let your imagination along with the dialog rule how you will judge it. The most interesting and innovative idea are a race of "silurians" known as "The Sleestak". One intelligent version of the Sleestak controls travel through time and we see experiments using "crystals" (ala' George Pal) as a means of power to alter the time universe. As the series progressed the plots became thicker and if you are a fan willing to look beyond the constraints of the program you will find it fascinating. Well recommended for kids and older "kids" too!

Escape to Witch Mountain (Special Edition) (1975) Review

Escape to Witch Mountain (Special Edition) (1975)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Growing up as a child in the 1970's I remember watching THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY every Sunday evening at 7pm. I of course enjoyed the cartoons but also enjoyed the many live action Dinsey movies such as THE SHAGGY DOG, THE SHAGGY D.A., POLLYANNA, THE WHIZ KIDS movies and of course the WITCH MOUNTAIN movies. I remember looking forward to ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN and would make it a point to never miss this movie when it aired.
The story is about a brother and sister, Tony & Tia, who along with their alien family tried to migrate to Earth but crashed upon arriving. Tony and Tia then try to locate their family with the assistance of a widower while trying to avoid a rich villan who wants to use the kids Extra Sensory Powers (ESP) to further his greedy goals. As a child I actually found this movie to be very scary. I actually feared for Tony and Tia. Now as an adult it has lost the scary aspect. That comes with age I guess. It is still a good watch though.
I have wanted to purchase this film for years so my children could watch it. Now that they are pre-teens and begining to lose their childhood innocence I was finally able to purchase this new DVD. As I suspected they were reluctant to watch this movie and the sequel RETURN FROM WITCH MOUNTAIN. I finally got them to watch the films and they did enjoy the them but obviously it did not have the same effect on them as it did me. However younger children, especially those who have not been spoiled by CGI special effects will no doubt still enjoy the films. I tried to explain to my children that as a grade schooler I had a huge crush on Kim Richards (Tia). I got teased for that and of course when I teased my boy about his attraction to Hillary Duff that was a different matter. Go figure.
The DVD has some nice special features. Interviews, cartoons and other such material. I don't have enough positive things to say about Disney's old movies being offered through their Vault Disney line of products.

A vehicle floats in midair ... a coat rack comes to life and attacks a sheriff ... and wild animals are putty in the hands of Tony and Tia Malone in Disney's thrilling fantasy adventure about the psychic powers of two young orphans. Their clairvoyance prompts evil millionaire Aristotle Bolt (Ray Milland) to lure them to his mansion to exploit their powers. While escaping, they meet a friendly camper (Eddie Albert) and begin to unravel the mystery of their origin. Soon, all three are fleeing townspeople who have branded the children witches. But then IT happens! Someone with even greater powers takes over and leads the children -- and the audience -- into a dazzling and unexpected experience ... one that is truly out of this world!

Hellraiser: Boxed Set (2008) Review

Hellraiser: Boxed Set (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, to those asking "why isn't this the complete collection?" I wish we could have gotten that, but Anchor Bay only has distribution rights for the first 2 films. The rest are in the hands of Dimension Films.
Now to trash a set that I've been wanting for a long time...
Ever since the UK got their version of Hellraiser 1, 2 & 3 in the Lament Cube, fans in the states have been clamoring for a release. Unfortunately special packaging is rarely released in the US because of complaints of shelf compatibility from both retailers and customers. Some of us, though, find unique ways to display these wonderful rarely-seen gems, and quickly grab them up.
I won't be doing that with this ridiculous set, though. It seems that Anchor Bay has said "OK, here's the packaging you want, but you have to take the total crap that's inside!" Seriously, why do I need the same copy of Hellraiser 1 that I just bought about a year and a half ago? Wouldn't it have been better to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film with the Lament Cube packaging along with the new material? And why do I need 2 copies of the first movie? Completely ridiculous. If I don't have a Blu-Ray player, the 3rd disc is useless to me. If I do have one, the regular copy of the first movie is useless to me. No matter what, the consumer is being forced to pay for something they absolutely do not need, even if they own none of the items in the package.
This release is a total dud, and I can't give it any more than 1 star due to the complete thoughtlessness on the part of Starz / Anchor Bay.

Twin Peaks - The First Season (Special Edition) (1990) Review

Twin Peaks - The First Season (Special Edition) (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the spring of 1990, the ABC network treated it's viewers to a most unusual viewing experience; the David Lynch and Mark Frost creation "Twin Peaks". A hybrid murder/mystery, primetime soap opera, darkly funny comedy and super- natural thriller...Twin Peaks was all of these and yet at the same time none. It would use what on other shows would be clichés to create a richly woven tapestry so original, thought provoking and emotionally truthful that it re- defined what television at it's best could truly be. At times it was hilarious and absurd, other times it was heart-wrenching in it's honesty of human emotion and suffering, and still other times it was deeply chilling and disturbing with images you can't easily shake off days after...and sometimes it was all these things at once. There had never been anything even remotely like it on TV before and (so far) nothing like it since. It's influence can be seen in countless other programs...but only elements, no one has achieved the true artistry that "Twin Peaks" had. Being a mid-season replacement series, the whole of it's first season was only 7 episodes and had much of America asking the question "Who killed Laura Palmer?".
The series' was set in the fictional, northwestern town of Twin Peaks, where the murdered body of local homecoming queen, Laura Palmer is found on a beach wrapped in plastic. This event sets the stage for the arrival of FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) and the subsequent investigation as to the identity of her killer. It is this investigation that will uncover the quiet trappings of this small mountain town to reveal dark secrets hidden within and and even darker things lurking without. He will encounter a remarkable cast of characters, all with their own personal agendas.
"Twin Peaks" was and still remains groundbreaking television of the first order. It was stylistically cinematic, each episode looks very much like an hour long feature film with an equally impressive soundtrack presentation. It was incredibly well written (with so many quotable lines the mind boggles at them all) with fabulous characters, a wonderful sense of humor and a shadowy (and sometimes very scary) sense of mystery. The large ensemble cast of MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean, Piper Laurie, Sherylynn Fenn, Laura Flynn Boyle, Peggy Lipton, Miquel Ferrer, Ray Wise, Joan Chen and far too many more to list here are all uniformly excellent in their respective rolls.
For "Twin Peaks"' debut on DVD, Artisan Home Entertainment has put together a very nice set featuring episodes 1 thru 7 (unfortunately the 2 hr. pilot is missing due to rights issues, originally owned by Warner Bros. it is now owned by Paramount). The packaging is a slick fold-out design with transparent slip case, much like the design of Fox's X-Files box sets. 4 discs are included.
With only 2 episodes per disc, these transfers are mastered at a very high bit rate and the results are stunning. Having been used to the soft, grainy picture afforded by the previous video versions of the series, I was quite unprepared for the unbelievable picture quality delivered on this release. These new high definition, re-mastered transfers are breathtaking, with colors rendered perfectly (the green opening titles nearly leap off the screen). Blacks are solid with excellent shadow detail, flesh tones are accurately reproduced and the show's red color schemes have never looked better (without a trace of bleeding). No digital artifacts are present and I never noticed any signs of edge enhancement, all in all an incredible job.
The same can be said for the sound presentation here, you can choose between Dolby digital 5.1 surround and 2.0 surround or (in a first for any television DVD product) DTS digital surround. These are very good mixes, the DTS surround being the best. The surround elements are reserved mostly to ambient sounds and Angelo Badalamenti's brilliant music, dialogue is placed mostly in the center and is clear and intelligible. This is television and not a Hollywood action spectacular so don't expect reference quality surround use, but a detailed sound mix perfectly suited to the show. Badalamenti's score is especially well presented here.
I would suggest to first time viewers to try and get hold of the pilot episode. Although it has an alternate ending filmed as a possible "closed" ending for European markets, it is actually an uncut version of Cooper's dream in episode 2. You can also purchase an import DVD of the pilot from Amazon.com which is the original broadcast version, the video and audio is not as pleasing as on the set reviewed here but still it is acceptably good. Artisan has included a booklet with the season 1 set explaining the events of the pilot but I would suggest viewing it if possible before viewing ep.1 thru 7. With each show being a day in the investigation, viewers will likely be lost without the events of the pilot to start from.
Overall a very impressive set from Artisan. If you missed this extraordinary show before, don't miss it this time. And please hurry up with Season 2.

Spice and Wolf: Season One Review

Spice and Wolf: Season One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Spice and Wolf sounds, by the description, like a typical sudden-girlfriend-appearance anime. Indeed, there are similar "boy meets cute Goddess girl" series out there, like Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens. Spice and Wolf, however, is nothing of the sort.
It is, instead, a very interesting and well-thought out period piece. The antiquated European setting is ideal for the true essence behind this anime--economy. Lawrence and Holo make a cute pair, to be sure, but this first season only hints at a romantic development between them. Instead, the focus is on a sort of budding professional relationship. The two explore the world town by town, with interesting glimpses into different trading practices, different currencies, and different cultures. The religious presence of a Catholic-esque Church is especially intriguing. They are corrupt in trading methods but effective at spreading faith, something wholly believable.
Simple observations like this are one of the things that make this series so great. Its compliment are the characters. Lawrence and Holo are always interesting, and usually funny. Holo's flirtation and Lawrence's inhibitions make for a comedic formula that rarely gets tiring. The best part about their relationship is that, unlike most anime, the audience is not forced to believe in it. The anime takes things slow, letting their relationship build like real ones do--by shared experience. Their frustrations, fears, dreams and humor are all allowed to develop naturally. This may make it seem like there is little character development throughout the series, but there is enough to keep it going.
The series of light novels, off of which this anime is based, are still being published. As such, the episodic nature of the show seems to make it come to an abrupt end. This is no problem, however, considering there is a second season already finished in Japan, with a third all but assured. It is worth the small time investment. As it is only one small part of an anticipated whole, it will not be a jaw-dropping, life-changing piece of art, but it will most definitely make your day a little more pleasant. Is this not one of the most admirable aspects of art, anyway, that it can do something so simply profound as to make one feel better?
Funimation usually does the most acceptable job of dubbing shows here. Fullmetal Alchemist is an example of some of their good work, and they only seem to learn from their mistakes as a company. And for those who refuse to tolerate dubbing, the original Japanese voice track is amazing, and their subtitling is sure to be, also.
This is a series that will grow on you, just as the characters grow on each other. The pace is peaceful, the characters likable, and the story makes the fantastic easy to believe. There is little here not to enjoy.

The Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader Review

The Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Preparing for their summer, Lucy, Peter, Susan and Edmund suddenly find themselves summoned back to Narnia. A lot has changed since they were last there, centuries have passed, and many humans of Narnia no longer believe in Aslan, dwarves or talking animals. Among those who do, though, is Prince Caspian, future King of Narnia. Caspian's uncle is trying to kill him, and he needs the children's help. [Color, originally aired in 1989, with a running time of 1 hour.]
The second story picks up Lucy and Edmund visiting their cousin Eustace. When the three children are drawn into Narnia, they join an adult King Caspian on his quest to discover the fate of seven of his father's counselors who were banished under the regime of King Miraz. Adventure and lessons await the children and the crew of the Dawn Treader! [Color, originally aired in 1989, with a running time of 2 hours.]
These movies (actually three television episodes) appear to be based quite closely on C.S. Lewis's books of the same titles, though I must admit that I haven't read the books for a long time. Overall, I found the acting better in these movies, and the special effects much better. (Also, the character Reepicheep is played by Warwick Davis, the star of the movie Willow.)
Once again, I liked the lessons that these movies taught, and the Christian themes that run through it. My children enjoyed watching it (an important consideration), and we all liked discussing it. I think that this is a great family movie, one that I highly recommend to you!

I simply loved this DVD. There was the good things, and the bad things
Good Things:
Very Funny
Entertaining
Also comes in Japanese with subtitles
Bad Things:
Sometimes Voice Acting sounds cheesy
Storyline is all over the place in certain episodes
Episodes may be repetitive(because in every episode, Nina is in trouble and gets saved by Ichii and Zero)
Overall, I rate it 4 stars. It's good, but not something to tell your anime-loving friends.
This is a good anime for people who like Romance, Magic, Fantasy, and Comedy. This is a Shoujo anime, mostly girls will enjoy this.
I suggest to buy this even if you don't like the english dub, because it also comes in Japanese with english subs. Hope this review helps!

Dungeons & Dragons - The Complete Animated Series (1983) Review

Dungeons and Dragons - The Complete Animated Series (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was my #1 favorite cartoon series when I was eleven years old in 1983. I watched it religiously on TV back then, and when we got our first VCR, I recorded every re-run and watched those videotapes until I wore them out. Naturally, I was excited to hear this show was finally coming out on DVD. I bought the complete series box set released by BCI right away. All the episodes look great in terms of picture quality. Not to mention, the special features are surprisingly plentiful for an old, mostly-forgotten Saturday morning cartoon, and it really brought back some great memories.
Then I discovered a very disappointing problem. And I'm going to sound like a real nit-picker here - but I gotta state my case...
Any dedicated fan of this show is familiar with the episode "The Dragon's Graveyard" - generally considered to be the best episode of the entire series. That's the one where the kids decide to destroy Venger (the ultimate, evil bad guy) once and for all. They plan to do this by convincing Tiamat (the ultimate, evil 5-headed Dragon) to help them. It's a very cool story, because the good guys basically team up with one arch villain in order to settle their grudge match with another arch villain. As a kid in the 80's, I videotaped this series and "The Dragon's Graveyard" was one episode that I went back and watched repeatedly. So, I know that episode almost by heart. One of the things I always loved about that episode, and which I still remember clearly, was its powerful musical score. Especially during the scene where Venger throws fireballs at Uni, the baby Unicorn, nearly killing her, and the scene at the end, where the kids have their final, climactic battle with Venger, pin him against a rock, and lead hero Hank has to make the ultimate decision whether to kill Venger, or let him go. From watching and re-watching this particular episode to death on videotape, I remember very clearly that during these scenes the music had a fast, chaotic, rushing quality - a theme not heard frequently in other episodes - which racheted up the energy and took the drama way beyond typical Saturday morning cartoon fare.
And yet, while watching this same classic episode on the BCI-released Dungeons and Dragons DVD set, I noticed that this music had been completely replaced with slower, formulaic sections of music that can be regularly heard elsewhere in the series. This change in the music made the scenes described above considerably less effective, severely weakening the emotional impact of this episode.
Allright, now - yes - I realize how trite and ridiculous it must sound for a 30+ year old man to be nit picking the DVD quality of one single episode of a Saturday Morning cartoon show he loved when he was eleven. But the whole reason I bought this DVD set in the first place was to re-experience the innocent fun of those childhood memories, and instead I got a diluted version of that experience.
As a matter of fact, in the "Episode Trivia" section, it even mentions that another version of "The Dragon's Graveyard" episode exists, with a completely different musical score... and when I read that, all I could think was, "Yeah, no kidding, and you bozos put the weaker of the two versions on the DVD set. Thanks a lot!"
So... that's my one huge disappointment with the BCI set, and I'm guessing other fans who are total geeks for this show, will notice and be bothered by it, too.
NOW HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS... In 2009, Dungeons and Dragons was RE-RELEASED in a new DVD set, by a company called Mill Creek Entertainment. I had heard rumors that this new release RESTORED ALL of the ORIGINAL MUSIC used on the show, thus presenting every episode AS IT APPEARED, WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY SHOWN on TV in the early 1980's. At first I wasn't sure if I should believe the rumors... Then I saw that the Mill Creek release was selling for a surprisingly lower price than the BCI set... Low enough that I decided it was worth giving it another shot.
So, I ordered it, and let me tell you as a knowledgeable fan, that yes - the Mill Creek Entertainment release DOES include all the episodes with their original music. THIS is "The Dragon's Graveyard" as I remember and love it. Be advised, the Mill Creek release contains no Special Features, which is unfortunate, but I find myself not caring about that. The important thing is to have all the original episodes in their original form. And again, the price on the Mill Creek set is also a lot cheaper than the price on the BCI set, so it's hard to complain about the lack of "extras".
Bottom line - this is a great cartoon series. But if you want to experience this show in its original form - do yourself a favor: Snub the BCI set, and buy the Mill Creek Entertainment set. Take if from a long time fan of this show. I was deeply disappointed with the BCI set, and very, very happy with the Mill Creek set.
