The Return of Spinal Tap (1992) Review

(More customer reviews)While nothing, absolutely nothing, can compete with the original "This is Spinal Tap" for comedic genius, this DVD is a brilliant work in it's own right. While it is true that the majority (maybe 75 percent or so) of the film is a live show shot in the Royal Albert Hall in 1992, there are numerous interludes and links to keep the satire quotient pegged.
All in all the music is performed well, but some of the newer materiel falls a bit flat compared to the "Smell the Glove" set. Songs like "Cash on Delivery" and "Clam Caravan", while vaguely amusing are not up to the normal Tap standards (although Nigel playing the clarinet is quite a sight), and the Rap version of "Sex Farm" was just plain annoying. Having said that, there are moments of inspired brilliance here. During "Stonehenge" they have the opposite problem they had in the original...the monument is too huge to get in the theatre. During "Big Bottom" all three play basses, which is not only funny to think about, but very funny to actually hear. The guitar pyrotechnics and way over the top soloing of Nigel Tufnel continue in "Diva Fever", a forgettable song without the solo. During this particular solo (during which Derek takes a cab and gets a huge meal at a restaurant, while David has a cucumber facial and pedicure) Nigel plays his guitars by throwing horseshoes at them, juggling while playing with his feet, etc.
Interspersed with the concert footage are numerous links, most of which are utterly brilliant. We learn that Nigel has invented a folding wine glass (he still needs the rubber hinges), and has founded 'Travel for Animals', an organization that allows animals (in this case his ferret, Trevor) to travel with their own passport. We learn that Derek goes on his father's telephone sanitizing service ('Sani Phone') business calls with him to help make ends meet, and has invested in not one, but two unbuilt London apartments, the net result of which is that he has to stay in a hotel while in London. David and his wife now work part time at a summer soccer camp in California and she runs 'Potato Republic', a store specializing in itchy Irish clothing. Additionally, David and Nigel visit their boyhood home of Squatney, and reminisce. All of these bits are inspired as are the guest spots featuring things like Mel Torme singing "Big Bottom" and a member of Primus with a picture of Derek tattooed on his bicep.
My only irritant with this DVD is that some of the songs are incorrectly named in the liner notes for some reason; for instance, "Big Bottom" is called "Bum Cakes" in the credits. All in all, I think this is a wonderful DVD, and is well worth the money. If you are a true Tap fan, you must own this!

Barney - Walk Around the Block with Barney (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)My 2 1/2 yr old daugter loves anything Barney, but she specifically asks for this tape by name. The songs are new, lively and catchy-great for parentswho are tired of the same old songs. I actually fine myself singing along to some of these. My daughter loves to imitate some of the sketches and dances, especially the title song. I can't recommend this enough! Whoever wrote the songs for this movie should do another!

Barbie Movie Collection Review

(More customer reviews)This has the first four Barbie movies in one, they are Nutcracker, Rapunzel, Swan Lake, and the best one ever - The Princess and the Pauper. It is a good mix of Barbie singing and dancing. The quality of the animation and the storys get better as they go on with the Princess and the pauper songs etc the best. There is some great humour in that one too which the kids really enjoy.
Hours of fun in here which will keep your little girl occupied. Also nice dancing in the first two (Nutcracker and Swan Lake). What I like about these movies is Barbie is very capable, she is intelligent and tries to help others. I know it probably sounds trite, but I like the fact that the movies teach good ethics to kids, about being part of a community, and respecting others.

Alice Cooper - Special Edition EP (1971) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD features live performances from the original Alice Cooper BAND in a television studio. Unfortunately there is no live audience to interact with, just cameras. So that dynamic is missing. This band was good at getting a reaction from live audiences. The original band is Glen Buxton-guitar, Michael Bruce-organ-guitar-vocals, Neal Smith-20 piece drum kit, Dennis Dunaway-bass and vocals and Alice on lead vocals. This is the band that Alice rose to notoriety with. If you have the Prime Cuts video you've seen this version of 18 already although this version has the complete song in it with a dramatic organ intro from Mike Bruce at the beginning. The Under My Wheels song is a different version than the one on Prime Cuts and has Alice with the old Spider eyes make up. One can see how Alice and Bob Ezrin felt the band was limited musically, primarily because of Glen. He tended to doodle on leads. This is why on the albums Ezrin brought Rick Derringer to play on Under My Wheels and Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter on later albums. Live, Glen was left on his own until he could no longer function onstage. Glen did start to develop more and the School's Out period was his peak of musical accomplishment and Public Aninal # 9 rocks with dynamic changes and creative use of guitar feedback. After the School's Out period, Glen began to fall. The band added Mick Mashbir on guitar and Bob Dolin on keys to the live show and really advanced musically although they still kept Glen. This band was really young when they made it. Would have been nice to see how they could have matured like Aerosmith did. This appears to be all there is of the original band. The Good To See You Again Alice Cooper movie of the Billion Dollar Babies show, the largest rock and roll show and tour in the history of rock n' roll at this point was botched by the film crew. The lighting was very poor and does not give an accurate view of the band and the stage. It's too dark. An ABC In Concert performance of the School's Out show is also no where to be found except on horrible bootleg copies. This video is a history lesson if nothing else. The original band was one of the coolest bands I've ever seen. Mike, Neal, Dennis were always unique and capable musicians who really knew how to put James Bond type theme music into rock n' roll and within a certain range Glen was good. No drummer can play Halo Of Flies or Billion Dollar Babies like Neal Smith. When Alice performs the old songs with new musicians, it always seems so sterile and antiseptic, something is missing for me. Alice should do a reunion album and tour with Mike, Neal, Dennis, maybe Mick Mashbir or other good guitar player and a keyboard player and Bob Ezrin. Public Animal # 9 rocks the best on this DVD. It kicks. ***NOTE*** This DVD has only 3 songs on it: 18, Under My Wheels and Public Animal # 9.***

In the video, you get to meet the eye of the guys, and see them goofing around like normal guys do, they are just sooo cute! You can tell how much they loved their fans and how much the fans loved them.And their "mansion that flies," oh god, it was so pretty! I highly recommend this video to any backstreet fan. You won't regret it, I promise! Keep the backstreet pride alive!!!

Glee: Season One, Vol. 1 - Road to Sectionals (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)My rating does not pertain to the show itself, I actually love the show, but this release is a waste of money and manufacturing resources. This set was originally planned earlier this fall when Glee was only going to have 13 episodes for the first season, but then after having such good ratings, FOX added NINE more episodes to the first season. This is a redundant release because FOX has said they will also release an actual COMPLETE first season after the show finishes airing the last 9 episodes starting in April. It will come with a coupon to save on the complete season, but unless that is $30 of more, you'll end up paying more for both releases than if you just wait and buy the complete season. Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but this is just a get money fast scheme and I will not support volume releases. Don't waste your money on this, wait for the full season. Let's make the studios realize they can't screw us over with these types of releases just so they can make more money.

Fame (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I was excited to go see this movie, and really did not know what to expect.
This would have made a much better new TV series than a movie. I would love to see it fleshed out as a TV series and get some real developement in characters and plot.
Unfortuntely it fell into that unsasifactory category where you saw most of the best dancing\singing parts on the theatrical teasers so you are left with virtually no WOW factors sitting and watching it in the theatre.
I was expecting more dancing and singing in the movie as a whole, but found that aspect to be disappointingly skimpy, with few actual "full" musical numbers.
I do not think they fleshed out any defining plot and came across aimless. I do not think they developed any one set of characters enough to hook you into any of the many moments they crammed into one film. They also Cliched too much in this movie. The Characters, the "hardships" the hook-ups most of which felt forced to fit a formula for the movie, the struggles. No one character carried any full personality, they all seemed cliched and safe. Part of that I feel, is because they made it an ensemble cast but made that core ensemble too large to get any real screen time to feel attached to anyone.
I feel like there was soooooo much potential here that was just left undeveloped and instead I was shown an "outline" of what could be a great TV series.
At time I felt confused as to if they were trying to make it feel like the same time as the origional Fame instead of completely updating it to be a modern twist, but caught todays conviences and clothing style..
I LOVED who they picked to be teachers and wanted more from them.. I liked most of the young actors but don't feel like I got to really know any of their characters or felt that many of them actually grew from freshamn year to senior year.

The colors were all over he place with the Grinch appearing as a yellow, then brown and finally slightly green creature. The transfer is terrible. I would not recommend it to anyone based upon this poor quality.

Gimme Some Truth - The Making of John Lennon's "Imagine" Review

(More customer reviews)As with almost every archival Beatles-related release, this is another product that tries to straddle the line of being for the collector and the casual fan both (leaving neither really happy with the end result). Once again they have erred on the favor of the casual fan, who will not be the one buying the majority of this release. Capitol/EMI never seem to learn from the great bootlegs how to compile really good releases.
If you have Imagine (the videos film), and Imagine (the documentary film), and Yoko Ono Then and Now, and the John Lennon videos collection, then you already have more of THIS video than you SHOULD have. The NEW stuff in this video is GREAT! Where is the rest of it? I could have gone for way more recording scenes, this hardly shows George playing, no King Curtis, no Badfinger. Just enough to tease us, then back to more recycled footage. Obviously these people filmed everything they did almost all the time, so why do we have to keep seeing the same scenes over and over again in each (NEW?) product. I am all for putting things in context, but the old stuff makes the basis for this dvd, not the new stuff. Just enough is left out of each product that you have to buy all of them, but once you have them it's pretty redundant. Of course the casual fan is not going to care because they will only see one of the versions, but for the rest of us this is getting really old. They also took the cheap way out and left in all the dust, hairs, scratches, and streaks in the video too, rather than cleaning it up like Yellow Sub. And, unlike Yellow Sub, the 5.1 soundtrack is not that big of a deal musically, and not that sonically different from the cd remaster.
The extra interview is nice, since they went out of their way to make that complete. I just wish as much thought would have gone into the main feature. Do you need this? Yes. If it's the only Lennon video you have, you'll probably be pretty happy, and it's much better than the videos version Imagine. If you have all the others, you still need this because there is just enough new to re-sell you the old again.

Paul McCartney's Get Back World Tour Review

(More customer reviews)You can't go wrong with any of Paul McCartney's live recordings. Despite what anyone says about Sir Paul's post-Beatles music, when it comes to live performance, the man always gives 100 percent. He's as hard-working a showman as anyone in rock and always holds his own against virtually every live band. The guy cares about what he does, has a great voice, is a solid innovative bassist and one heck of a pianist. I am certain that almost everyone who attended the 1989 live shows filmed for this DVD ranks it as a night they will never forget.
I wish this DVD were longer, because it focuses almost exclusively on Paul's Beatles hits. I know that many people love hearing McCartney sing the Beatles Greatest Hits, but I'd like to hear more of his solo and Wings material. (In concert at the time, McCartney did include a lot of post-1970 material, but little of it is here save for the beautiful 'Put it There,' 'Live and Let Die,' and 'Coming Up.')
My major problem with the DVD comes from Richard Lester's decision to intercut newsfootage throughout many of the songs. 'The Long and Winding Road' is all but ruined by Vietnam imagery, for example, and by the time I reached the end of the DVD I was uncomfortably reminded of the movie version of 'Beatlemania' which used similar tricks. McCartney is the real deal and doesn't need such trickery. And, yes, that's the same Richard Lester who used to direct great popcorn flicks like 'Superman II' and 'The Three Musketeers' not to mention the Beatles own 'Hard Day's Night.' I've no idea why McCartney allowed Lester to ruin sections of this film with his heavy-handed social commentary.
I'm still giving this 4 stars if only because we get the joy of Paul McCartney rediscovering himself in front of a worldwide audience.

Rush Chronicles - The DVD Collection (1984) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a MAJOR Rush fan, having seen them some dozen times over the years starting with twice in one year on their Farewell to Kings tour in 1977. That's the Rush I fell in love with -- the one that created side-long epics like 2112 and the classic Cygnus X-1 and its follow-up, Hemispheres.
Sadly, my interest began to wane after Signals and almost totally petered out by the Power Windows and Hold Your Fire era, which was in large part their entire '80s catalog.
I began to gain new respect for Rush when they released Roll the Bones, Counterparts and Test For Echo, however, and now eagerly await the new album they're allegedly working on.
Like previous reviewers, I own the videos Exit Stage Left and Grace Under Pressure Tour 1984 and have been waiting -- along with all other fans -- for their first-ever DVD release.
Well, Chronicles The DVD Collection is out. And I have it. And it's really nice to see these music videos again, but -- as I said at the beginning -- I'm a fan of the older material. I liked Geddy Lee's Rickenbacker bass and Alex's cream colored Gibson ES-355 used on the Farewell tour!
The sound and picture quality are just about right, given what this collection is. You won't get perfection and it won't do you any good to whine about pictures and sound that aren't pristine.
All the big hits are here. It's fun to watch vintage Rush. (Check out the hair styles slowly getting shorter with each video...along with the instruments changing from Gibsons and Rickenbackers to Fenders and Wals.)
I couldn't ask for more regarding this collection. It is what it is. It's great, in fact. If you ask me what I'd LIKE to see, however, it's entire concerts on DVD, some from as long ago as their Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres period right on up through to their Test For Echo tour. Music videos are fun and interesting, but it's the live performances that really brought out the best in Rush. So, please, let's see some Rush concert DVDs released in the next year or two!

Paramore: The Final Riot Review

(More customer reviews)First off, let me point out the video and audio are fine! There is not a lag issue with this concert. What they do is during most songs about once there is a two second delay. For example, Haley will jump off this little step on the stage and the video creators of this dvd/blu-ray (blu-ray on the review) purposely made the jump down go slower on the screen. It is always during the cool moments like jumping, head bobbing, instrument solos, etc. It is not a bad thing. I loved it. The audio is great and sounded just like they do in person. I know, I attended their 2009 Kansas City concert a few months back. The video is a 9.5/10. It is not bad and looks amazing. There are a few scenes that are very dark with mild dark blue lights on haley during an intro. Those can have a very very tiny bit fuzzy, but I really think it is a camera limitation or dvd creation tool is not amazing in dark scenes. 92% of the time the lights are blaring and the video is spot on. This is one of my favorite blu-ray concerts I own an I have quite a few. The special features are a mix bag. I love they have two additional songs. One song is in hd audio with a stable picture in the background. I have a lcd, but I turned it off during the song. I know I should be safe, but I don't want any potential for burn in. (burn in is where the image burns into your tv and you can never remove the sceen. It would be like having a mild whitish transparency over everything you watch in the future) They should have had a slideshow going, but it is minor and this is an extra feature. This is not why you bought the movie. It does include the new paramore song decode from twilight and it sounds amazing. The video is obviously too small for the size they tried to expand it to. It feels squished into the middle and it is a tiny tiny bit blocky. Some scenes worse than others. I would have rather had a second disc on dvd with this video. My playstation 3 can upscale and would have looked much better than this video that is stuck in the blocky form at a hd resolution. There is also a video about their group and planning the concert. I just skimmed this video, but it is a interesting extra if you want to know more about their group. Definitely a great blu-ray and worth the purchase if you like paramore or a couple of songs. This group is growing on me more and more. Thank you twilight for helping me discover this group as it is now in my top 3 favorite groups for 2009.

A Perfect Circle - aMOTION (with CD) Review

(More customer reviews)Following up just two weeks after A Perfect Circle's election day release, "eMOTIVe," another release, "aMOTION" comes our way. Basically what this set consists of is almost every scrap of extra APC material. The disc is nine tracks full of remixes, some old, some new. The DVD consists of all of the band's music videos up to now, some we've seen a million times, and others that either didn't air, or were never released. First off, the remix CD. Great choice, as A Perfect Circle seem to have some of the most tasteful remixes of any band out there. A great bulk of the songs were remixed by Danny Lohner and some have either appeared on various soundtracks or on import CD-singles. Probably one of the most note-worthy moments is the "Constantly Consuming" remix of "The Hollow," which isn't so much a remix, as it is a reinterpretation, as done by former bassist (who is still working with the band) Paz Lenchantin. That's right folks. She provides all of the music on this version and even sings it herself. The "Tilling My Own Grave" remix of "Weak & Powerless" is another great one. It definitely "rocks" up the original version (don't get me wrong, the original is untouchable) with some help by Lohner and born-again Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland (you may remember it from the "Underworld" soundtrack). The DVD portion is quite a treat as well. Not only are all the music videos here, but we get a live performance of "The Noose" (my favorite song from "Thirteenth Step") which is very entertaining (they need to put out a live DVD, hint hint), plus four different versions of the video "Blue," all fan-made. Both versions of "The Outsider" video are present, edited and unedited. Don't get too excited though, as the unedited cut doesn't feature nudity, just a long intro to the video -- although, everyone seems to hate the Bikini Bandits idea so much, so who cares, right? Well, they make another appearance in "Thinking Of You," so get used to it. "Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums" is an all animated video that contains some very strong anti-Bush imagery, that I haven't seen (probably for many good reasons) aired anywhere. Maynard and Billy each have their own commentary for the videos. Maynard comments on all of them, and gets into the more intellectual side of the meaning of each song and video, while Billy gives us the more straight-forward story, and sadly, only appears on a handful of the videos. So overall, it's a great package. You have to really appreciate the band and what they do to appreciate this. To those who love to scream "Sell-out," I ask you this question: If they are selling out, why are you buying? Get over yourselves. They make incredible music, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters. And good for them for giving us so much material to tide us over until the next album, which will probably be a long time coming.

(More customer reviews)I wasn't sure what to expect from a RHCP's live performance with John Frusciante back in the lineup. By far my favorite guitar player they've had, I didn't know if he could still play after his drug abuse problems in the years away from the band. Their "Californication" did little to alleviate those fears, his playing and soloing being so sparse and sort of un-practiced sounding. Don't get me wrong. "Californication" is a great album but it's much different from the chops galore "Blood Sugar Sex Magic". (And I don't mean that as a slam-BSSM is a masterwork in no small part due to Frusciante's intricate, interweaving lines throughout).
"Off the Map" put all my doubts to bed. Frusciante plays his [behind] off. Just check out "If You Have to Ask". Shredding, but he's so much more than than just a shredder. Something magical happens when his Strat, through a Wah, hits a Marshall. It's the tone for sure and then his note selection and use of space that really sets him apart from "shredders". I had read recently in a guitar magazine interview that he's trying to change his style, henceforth the new, sparse approach he's used on the last two albums. It's pretty funny to watch actually. When they play the new songs his playing shifts dramatically to the new style he's developing.
And don't let me forget Chad Smith and Flea. They are powerhouses here. Flea's gone from slapmaster (oh, he can still slap!) to improvisor and it suits him well. Chad is like a rock holding John and Flea's improvisations together.
This is a fun and inspiring dvd. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star review is because it does falter here and there. But that's what you get when your live show isn't prerecorded canned [stuff] and you take musical risks. That where the fun happens with these guys.

One Tree Hill: The Complete Second Season (2003) Review

Although not up to par with the first season quality wise, the second season is still ten times better than the other shows on television today. The season starts off a tad bit on the slow side, but no need to worry, because things get heated up real fast.
Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) announced in the season one finale that they got married, so now, the second season has them starting to deal with their marriage. Things don't exactly go as smoothly as they had planned. There are temptations along the line, as well as their dreams for the future which start to bring them apart from one another. Haley starts a musical career with Chris Keller (Tyler Hilton), a new guy in Tree Hill, and eventually, she leaves Tree Hill and Nathan to go on a concert tour across the US, leaving Nathan devistated.
The love triangle drama from last season between Lucas (Chad Michael Murray), Peyton (Hilarie Burton), and Brooke (Sophia Bush) has been solved, and all three are friends with one another. Brooke finds herself attracted to her new neighbor, Felix (Michael Copon), as the two eventually hook up. Felix's younger sister, Anna (Daniella Alonso) finds herself attracted to Lucas, but she has some secrets of her own to hide. Felix brings much of the drama to Tree Hill between the teens in the second season, by intimidating most people, and of course, the classic 'Dare Night' he arranges.
Peyton finds herself lonely, because last season, she felt herself romantically attracted to Jake (Bryan Greenberg), but problems with custody of his 6 month old daughter, Jenny, caused him to leave Tree Hill. Peyton finds herself in a dark place, but Jake returns with Jenny, as Jake and Peyton become romantically involved, only for Jake's ex, Nikki (Emanuelle Vaugier) to return, wanting Jenny for herself. Eventually, Jake is arrested for not giving custody, as Nikki kidnaps Jenny, leaving Tree Hill.
The adults of Tree Hill also deal with drama themselves this season. After Dan (Paul Johanssen) found his wife Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods) and his older brother Keith (Craig Scheffer) sleeping together, he was about to sign the divorce papers when he has a heart attack. He recovers, but Deb still remains with Dan, feeling sorry for him. To get back at Keith for sleeping with Deb, Dan hires Jules (Mia Menopolous) to make Keith fall in love with her, and then break his heart, just as Dan's had been when Keith slept with Deb. All happens, except Jules falls in love with Keith, as the revelations are brought forth, leaving both Keith and Jules heartbroken, and alone.
Karen (Moira Kelly) has gone back to college, enrolled in a business class, but finds herself falling in love with her professor, Andy. The two secretly date, but eventually Dan reveals their relationship to the class, leaving Karen extremely angry.
Deb has become addicted to painkillers this season, and is starting to spiral out of control with her life. Eventually she goes to rehab, and plans on leaving Tree Hill with Nathan.
But by the time the finale has come around, most of the characters have become infuriated with Dan for one reason or another, leading up to the explosive last five minutes, resulting in an attempted murder of Dan. Does he live? Or die? It's unknown at this point, or who even tried to kill him.
The second season of One Tree Hill is a must have for any fans, because the second season started to explore more into the characters, their relationships with one another, as well as their hopes and dreams. Much better than "just a teen soap", One Tree Hill is just so much better. It's for anyone, I'm a guy, which shows guys can like it too. It's not a girly soap opera, it's a show for everyone, even adults.
I highly recommend this, but be aware, it's highly addictive.
