That '70s Show - Season 4 (1998)
Average Reviews:

Season 4 is by far the best season because this season would show Donna and Eric breaking up. This would also be the last season in which they use regular titles for the show since starting with season 5, The episode titles would be used as '70s songs with titles from rock groups.
1.) It's a Wonderful Life 9/25/01
Eric is distraught after his break-up with Donna and wishes that they never kissed in the first place. As soon as he utters this wish, a guardian angel appears to teach Eric that it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. The angel takes Eric on a journey to the future -- the '80s -- to show him how everyone's lives would've turned out if he and Donna never got together. Eric remains unconvinced that the pain of his break-up was worth it, until the angel shows him all the wonderful memories he would have never had.
2.) Eric's Depression 9/26/01
Four days after the big break-up, Eric locks himself in his room ignoring Red and Kitty's pleas for him to come out and talk about it. Meanwhile, the gang goes to Funland without Eric, and Kelso gets lost.
3.) Pinciotti vs. Forman 10/2/01
Eric kicks Donna out of the basement when she tries to hang out with their friends. Jackie inspires Donna to compete with Eric over their friends. The competition threatens to tear the entire group apart. Meanwhile, Kitty is ecstatic when she learns that Red has become friends with Pastor Dave.

6.) The Relapse (Part 1 of 2) 11/6/01
Bob is in denial after Midge leaves. Donna seeks comfort in the arms of Eric, who thinks this means they're back together. Kelso and Fez go to the supermarket to try and pick up older women.
7.) Uncomfortable Ball Stuff (Part 2 of 2) 11/13/01
Donna keeps her promise to accompany Eric to the Pricemart Ball as a friend, but she gets jealous when she sees Eric with another girl. Fez gets a job at the Foto Hut but gets fired for being too efficient and making Hyde and Leo look bad, even though they're the only other two who work there and Leo is the boss. Bob meets a woman at the supermarket.
8.) Donna's Story 11/20/01
Eric is upset when Donna writes a story in the school newspaper that sounds exactly like events that happened in their relationship; he decides to write his own story. Red and Kitty have dinner with Bob and his new girlfriend. Red doesn't like her because she's taught Bob how to stand up for himself. Kelso invests in a pinball machine but looses out when Fez persuades the owner to get rid of it and bring in Space Invaders instead.
9.) The Forgotten Son 11/21/01
Red has to produce a new Pricemart instructional film, and his choice of actor for the part of "Stockboy" leaves Eric stunned. Kitty and Donna become friends, spending time together, and Leo takes Hyde and Fez on a shopping spree after inheriting money from his Uncle.
10.) Red and Stacey 11/27/01
Red thinks Pricemart checkout girl Stacey is perfect for his lovelorn son. The girl impresses Red when she justifies her dubious customer relations with a phrase dear to his heart. Red encourages Eric to ask her out and he even offers to assist. But when Red talks to Stacey, she says she's interested in someone else. Meanwhile, Jackie and Donna give Big Rhonda a makeover for her first date with Fez.
11.) The Third Wheel 12/11/01
When the guys go bowling for boy's night, Hyde throws a wrench in the plan when his "friend" Jill shows up. Kelso and Fez decide to hunt down their own ladies and leave Eric to feel like the third wheel. Meanwhile, Donna is uncomfortable when she discovers Bob's new girlfriend is spending the night. When Red unintentionally inspires Pastor Dave to give up the cloth, he gets into trouble with Kitty and must find a way to steer Dave back to the light.
12.) An Eric Forman Christmas 12/18/01
Eric thinks that Christmas just isn't as fun as it used to be when he was a kid, so Kitty suggests that he direct the church Christmas pageant. He has some artistic differences with the gang over how things should go. Kelso is upset that everyone is making fun of him for wanting to watch Christmas specials on television; and Red is upset over Bob's Christmas decorations.
13.) Jackie Says Cheese 1/8/02
Eric catches Red looking through his dresser drawers for a condom and thinks that Red has found Hyde's stash. Jackie gets a job as a cheese maiden and Fez is jealous of the new foreign guy.
14.) Eric's Hot Cousin 1/22/02
Eric' cousin Penny, whom he used to tease unmercifully when they were younger, comes for a visit, and she's...grown some. All the guys are infatuated with her, much to Donna and Jackie's dismay. Jackie and Donna try to be hotter than Penny, with disasterous results. Kitty, feeling like she's not needed, wants to get a pet.
15.) Tornado Prom 2/5/02
A tornado is on its way to Point Place and Red and Kitty are stuck in their basement with Bob and Joanne; Eric is stuck with Donna at the radio station; the rest of the gang is stuck at the school during a dance. Kelso is named the Snow King and Jackie can't believe she's only the Snow Queen runner-up.
16.) Donna Dates a Kelso 2/5/02
Eric and Donna both start dating other people; Jackie sets Donna up with Kelso's older brother Casey, while Eric has his pick of the girls at school after being named Point Place High's most eligible bachelor. Fez thinks that he's finally going to lose his virginity, and looks for a place that he and Rhonda can use for that purpose. Bob becomes rich again and Red buys a Corvette.
17.) Kelso's Career 2/12/02
Eric doesn't know what to do when Red says 'I love you', so he decides to say it back, but learns that Red was drugged when he said it. Fez buys Rhonda a box of candies for Valentine's day, then can't help but eat them all. Jackie tells Kelso to get a job so he can buy her something nice for Valentine's day, and he finds a career that suits his interests and hobbies at the same time.
18.) Leo Loves Kitty 2/18/02
Hyde tries to teach Fez to drive but Fez damages the car and hurts Leo, who was taking a nap behind the car. While in the hospital Leo falls in love with Kitty and starts showing up at the Formans bearing gifts for her. Kelso becomes a department store model and Jackie is jealous because it's her dream to be a model. She confronts him and demands that he doesn't do it but he stands up to her and does it anyways.
19.) Jackie's Cheese Squeeze 2/26/02
Eric catches Jackie kissing Todd, her boss, but instead of telling Kelso, he holds it over her head. Jackie decides to tell Kelso about it herself, as well as telling him that Eric knew all about it. Both of their plans backfire on them. Kitty feels neglected and worries about becoming a Corvette-widow when Red spends all his time with his new car.
20.) Class Picture 3/19/02
While trying to come up with a quote for the yearbook, the gang recalls how they met for the first time. They go through the times when they each met each other, no matter how embarrassing or stupid they were. They also try to work out a saying to put under each of their pictures. Kelso finally comes up with the perfect quote for them all, "It's been a long, strange journey...in Forman's basement!" The gang also realizes how strong their friendship is.
21.) Prank Day 3/26/02
It's Prank Day according to Kelso, who manages to trick his friends twice with his stunts. The guys' attempt to retaliate backfires horribly when Red triggers their prank instead. But rather than venting his wrath on Eric, Red joins the prank war to show the boys how it's done. Meanwhile, Jackie throws an impromptu slumber party to cheer Donna up on her parents' wedding anniversary.
22.) Eric's Corvette Caper 4/9/02
When Red and Kitty go out of town, Eric takes the Corvette out and lets his date drive. She manages to get it all dirty and Eric scrambles to get it clean in time because his parents are coming home early. Jackie and Donna snoop around in Casey Kelso's room while he's away, and discover that Michael likes to hang out there.
23.) Hyde's Birthday 4/23/02
Kitty plans a surprise birthday party for Hyde's 18th birthday. She recruits Jackie and Fez as decorators because of their feminine creativity (much to Donna's annoyance). Eric, Donna, and Kelso decide to steal a street sign for Hyde's present. But Hyde doesn't want to celebrate because he thinks this means he'll have to move out of the Formans' house.
24.) That '70s Musical 4/30/02 (100th episode!)
Fez fantasizes about several musical numbers featuring himself and the rest of the gang while he gets ready for a school concert.
25.) Eric's False Alarm 5/7/02
When Eric finds out that Casey is taking Donna to a motel, he decides to show up to make sure she doesn't do anything she'll regret. Bob's divorce from Midge comes through, he mentions marriage to Joanne, who totally freaks out. Naturally, Red and Kitty...Read more›

Alice Cooper - Special Edition EP (1971) Review

Alice Cooper - Special Edition EP (1971)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD features live performances from the original Alice Cooper BAND in a television studio. Unfortunately there is no live audience to interact with, just cameras. So that dynamic is missing. This band was good at getting a reaction from live audiences. The original band is Glen Buxton-guitar, Michael Bruce-organ-guitar-vocals, Neal Smith-20 piece drum kit, Dennis Dunaway-bass and vocals and Alice on lead vocals. This is the band that Alice rose to notoriety with. If you have the Prime Cuts video you've seen this version of 18 already although this version has the complete song in it with a dramatic organ intro from Mike Bruce at the beginning. The Under My Wheels song is a different version than the one on Prime Cuts and has Alice with the old Spider eyes make up. One can see how Alice and Bob Ezrin felt the band was limited musically, primarily because of Glen. He tended to doodle on leads. This is why on the albums Ezrin brought Rick Derringer to play on Under My Wheels and Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter on later albums. Live, Glen was left on his own until he could no longer function onstage. Glen did start to develop more and the School's Out period was his peak of musical accomplishment and Public Aninal # 9 rocks with dynamic changes and creative use of guitar feedback. After the School's Out period, Glen began to fall. The band added Mick Mashbir on guitar and Bob Dolin on keys to the live show and really advanced musically although they still kept Glen. This band was really young when they made it. Would have been nice to see how they could have matured like Aerosmith did. This appears to be all there is of the original band. The Good To See You Again Alice Cooper movie of the Billion Dollar Babies show, the largest rock and roll show and tour in the history of rock n' roll at this point was botched by the film crew. The lighting was very poor and does not give an accurate view of the band and the stage. It's too dark. An ABC In Concert performance of the School's Out show is also no where to be found except on horrible bootleg copies. This video is a history lesson if nothing else. The original band was one of the coolest bands I've ever seen. Mike, Neal, Dennis were always unique and capable musicians who really knew how to put James Bond type theme music into rock n' roll and within a certain range Glen was good. No drummer can play Halo Of Flies or Billion Dollar Babies like Neal Smith. When Alice performs the old songs with new musicians, it always seems so sterile and antiseptic, something is missing for me. Alice should do a reunion album and tour with Mike, Neal, Dennis, maybe Mick Mashbir or other good guitar player and a keyboard player and Bob Ezrin. Public Animal # 9 rocks the best on this DVD. It kicks. ***NOTE*** This DVD has only 3 songs on it: 18, Under My Wheels and Public Animal # 9.***

Alice Cooper, the king of shock rock, is an innovative showman - one of the most bizarre and entertaining rock attractions of all time. The inspiration and flamboyance of Alice Cooper did more than forever alter the face of rock 'n' roll as we now know it. He virtually invented rock as theatre, created new fashion trends, sparked a new sexual revolution, established higher standards for teenage decadence, and found time on top of all this to write and record a library of classic rock 'n' roll albums. This DVD EP captures Alice Cooper performing live at the peak of his career. The collection also features one of highlight tracks 'Public Animal #9' from the 1972 album 'School's Out' which catapulted Alice Cooper further into stardom.

Halloween: 30th Anniversary Box Set (1978) Review

Halloween: 30th Anniversary Box Set (1978)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Halloween. What a perfect title for a Horror movie. It's hard to believe back in 1977 that there had never been any movie, let alone a Horror film, that incorporated that title. And what good usage it got. Written, directed, and even musically scored by John Carpenter (with great assistance by then girlfriend Debra Hill), this was truly a film that brought Horror to it's roots, leaving an impact that only George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead did ten years earlier. Showcasing a deranged killer by the name of Michael Myers who in childhood murdered his sister in cold blood on Halloween night, only to escape his asylum to return to his Illinois home to hunt down babysitter (and eventually known little sister) Jamie Lee Curtis 15 years later, was truly an amazing film that never exploited the genre, keeping the imagination and terror flowing within the viewers mind rather than blatantly on the screen. For it's time it was the number one profitable independent film ever made, and after almost thirty years, it still terrifies and never grows old. A true classic film. Every single DVD collector should own it....
But which one?
Not in the sense of sequels, but rather in which version of the original should you add to your collection. You see, this film has had the DVD distribution rights by Anchor Bay Entertainment (now known as Starz), and they have re-released this classic now a total of six times. So I would like to compare the two most popular versions to see which one should be for you, the "Restored" or the "25th Anniversary"
Starting with the "Restored" version, this DVD was authored way back in 1999. However, it was personally restored by Halloween original cinematographer Dean Cundey, trying to preserve as much of the look of it's original theatrical run. This version has been released a whopping three times. But for the film's "25th (2003) Anniversary", Anchor Bay remastered the film yet again for another release "Halloween 25", this time taking the remastering process in their own hands, something of which Cundey was not happy with. You see, comparing the two's video, you'll notice that each are different. One point is brightness and sharpness. In the Cundey version, overall picture is dark and not as sharp while for 25 the white levels have been raised and it's overall color saturation has been lowered. To me, while the original with it's dark blue hue running throughout looks good, at times it's hard to see certain shots in the dark. The 25th version has fixed that, even going as far as making the film look more natural. As for sharpness, the 25th beats it by far. Audio wise, each film seems on the same level, so a tie there, but it's the video that should be considered when purchasing: the Cundey-more true to the original film/the 25-a sharper, more realistic picture.
Next would be the use of the disc space. Restored is one of those discs that wanted to cater to the early 2000's audiences of giving them both a widescreen and a fullframe on the same disc. Because of this, the bitrate is pretty small for both presentations. However, the 25th is a 2 disc set that only offers on Disc One the Widescreen presentation, and it's Divimax as well. But to be honest, it's bitrate isn't up to say Superbit quality. It's better, but with a total of four audio tracks to choose from, the entire dual layer disc is only used by 75%, and that other 25 could have went to more video bitrate, but alas it's not. But to me, the bitrate still is higher on the 25, not to mention it's compression is four years younger than Restored, so 25 wins again.
Finally is Extras, Restored has a 30 minute documentary called Halloween Unmasked 2000, narrated by Twisted Sister's Dee Snider. Why is he on here than just being a popular fan, beats me. But on 25's second disc is a whopping 87 minute documentary called A Cut Above The Rest which expands on the original and gives much greater detail on the film. 25 also includes another ten minute featurette called On Location, going back to view all the houses and such that were used in the film that Restored does not include either. And if that wasn't enough, 25 has the original Laserdisc commentary by John Carpenter with additional vocals with Jamie Lee Curtis and Debra Hill. This might be the best extra 25 has over Restored, because it's got to be one of the most personal commentaries I've ever heard. Carpenter doesn't hold anything back, a must listen. And sure, both have the same trailers, TV Spots, and such, but again to me 25th Anniversary wins this one too.
But the main reason why I'm writing all this is because back in 2007, Anchor Bay decided to stop releasing the 25th Anniversary and instead re-issue the Restored version. Why, I'm not sure. Dean Cundey was never happy with 25, and maybe his name on the back of Restored's box was a selling-point, I don't know. Maybe the 25's cover was confusing buyers because it looks a little like sequel H20's version? But I do know for your money, the 25th Anniversary is still the best way to go. What's sad is to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the classic film, Anchor Bay is yet again double-dipping it's audience by releasing a six disc collection featuring Parts 1, 4, 5, the NBC-TV edit, the 25 Years Of Terror special and a Blu-Ray version of the original. But again, both the DVD and Blu-Ray (BD version rumored to be a video-hybrid of both) are from the 1999 Cundey master (but the Blu does have the Cut Above special and commentary too). It would have been nice if the DVD was the 25 so fans could have both versions, but no, 25th Anniversary seems lost now.
In conclusion, if you want the best overall 1978 Halloween package, go with the 2003 25th Anniversary Edition. More extras, a more realistic picture, and a commentary to die for. Ratings-wise then from me is:
Restored: (8.5/10)
25th Anniversary: (9.5/10)
Thanks for reading,
RedSabbath

Charlie's Angels - The Complete Fourth Season Review

Charlie's Angels - The Complete Fourth Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The fourth season of CHARLIE'S ANGELS, which aired on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC from September 1979 through May 1980, is possibly the season that yields the most dramatic changes in the series, namely Shelley Hack becomes the newest angel, "Tiffany Welles", filling the slot vacated by original actress Kate Jackson. Returning for another tour of duty this season are "Kelly Garret" and "Kris Munroe", played by Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd respectively, along with faithful sidekick "Bosley", played by David Doyle. Farrah Fawcett's "Jill Munroe" also makes her final three appearances of the series.
With the new angel, also comes a new overall look to the series. With Hack, a former fashion model, on board, all three actresses don dresses, gowns, and tailored suits more often than casual wear. And while attention is taken away from the flesh (the Angels wear fewer bathing suits this season than ever before), the Angels never looked classier and more stunning in their wardrobe. The result is mature, professional-looking Angels that seem to have come a long way from the earlier days of the show when they rarely wore bras.
Aside from a new angel and a new look, the significant change that takes place this season that differentiates it from its predecessors is the writing style. Unlike the writing from season three which, at times, is dull and underwhelming, season four's writing includes several intriguing storylines that are largely the contribution of guest writers. ANGELS ON CAMPUS, ANGEL HUNT, FALLEN ANGEL, and THREE FOR THE MONEY are guest writer-contributed scripts and consequently, they are among the season's highlights as they are solid episodes that demonstrate the series' potency and vitality, even in its fourth season. The writing style also differs with certain episodes straying from the usual team formula, instead showcasing a single Angel while the other two Angels and Bosley are relegated to the background. A final aspect of the writing that changes is the overall tone, with some episodes (AVENGING ANGEL, CATCH A FALLING ANGEL, ANGEL'S CHILD, ANGELS ON THE STREET) tackling social issues such as drug abuse, pornography, child abuse, and prostitution with greater urgency than had been seen before in the series.
However, an aspect of the writing this season that backfired is intentionally minimizing the role of new angel "Tiffany" in the first several episodes. Two episodes in particular, ANGELS ON CAMPUS and ANGEL HUNT, are pivotal because the former establishes the back story and character of "Tiffany" and the latter validates the newest angel's position in the group and fleshes out all three angels' profound concern for each other. It's safe to assume these two episodes were among the first ones filmed because clips from them appear in the opening credits, yet unfortunately they did not air until almost halfway through the season. This was a poor decision on behalf of the producers/creators that damaged the series because it prevented the new angel (and actress) from instantly impressing and clicking with audiences. For this reason, Hack often, and rather unfairly, earns the odium from some fans as the death knell to the series. To remedy this, a simple rearranging of the initial episodes of the season would suffice: LOVE BOAT ANGELS, ANGELS GO TRUCKIN', ANGELS ON CAMPUS, ANGEL HUNT, FALLEN ANGEL, followed by OF GHOSTS AND ANGELS. Had these episodes aired in a similar sequence, perhaps the course of the series would have been quite different, with "Tiffany" continuing to work for Charles Townsend and Associates into the fifth season.
The only genuine flaw in the DVD set is the inclusion of the syndicated 2-part version of the season premier, LOVE BOAT ANGELS, instead of the original unedited print. The set is presented in a similar format to that of the third season set, with an outer box that houses 3 slim plastic DVD cases. Each case holds 2 discs and features a different group photo of the Angels on the cover, with episode titles, synopses, and original air dates on the back, and several photos of the Angels, Bosley, and the season's numerous guest stars (Patrick Duffy, Kim Cattrall, Timothy Dalton, Robert Reed, Barbara Stanwyck, etc.) throughout. Aesthetically, this is easily the best presentation of all CHARLIE'S ANGELS season sets. Mike Pingel of the Charlie's Angels website and SONY have put together a beautiful product, which is only fitting as it reflects such beautiful Angels.

Another season of the hit classic series comes to DVD! This season, the Angels go on the Love Boat to investigate a major art theft, go back to college to stop a white slavery ring, and find more than just fingerprints when Charlie's yacht is stolen. Jill gets help from the Angels after her date with a crown prince is interrupted by sniper fire, and Kelly meets a man who may be her long-lost father.

That '70s Show: The Complete Series Review

That '70s Show: The Complete Series

I was a slightly-more-than-casual fan of the show during its' initial run, but I phased out when the media decided to focus more on the antics of the celebrity cast members than the show itself (I call it the "Friends Syndrome).
Amazon sold this collection for under $100 as a Gold Box Deal recently and it was too cheap to resist. After receiving the series and taking a good look at the packaging, I am glad I made the impulse purchase.
The box set itself is designed to look like a 45RPM Singles Box, complete with metal buckles on the sides to keep it "locked" and a plastic strap on top. The box is cardboard but the sides are printed with nostalgic-looking textured paper, complete with cheezy "sticker art" highlights. The front of the box has a plastic window that exposes the first season's promotional cover. All in all it feels solid and durable and MUCH higher-quality than I expected it to be in when I bought it.
Opening the box: each season has been sectioned off in individual boxes with promotional art on them. Each disc inside the box in in a paper sleeve that emulates the sleeves that you would keep your 45's in. Very well-done.
In addition to all 8 seasons, the box set also comes with a miniature yearbook-style retrospective (complete with doodled-on 'paper' slipcover) that pretty much sums up the contents of the box and covers your main characters' timelines within the series. The feeling of 70's nostalgia fades when you go from page to page inside the book, but I am being picky, and if the weakest element of the box set is that the interior of the supplemental booklet feels more 80's than 70's, I am digging pretty deep.
Finally, for some reason the box set includes a copy of the final script for the final episode of the show. They even went as far as to bind the tiny teleplay with brass rivets. The box advertises that this item is "signed by the cast!" which SOUNDS neat, but if you are looking for an actual penned autograph you are obviously out of luck. I'm not sure why they chose to include the FINAL script of the series (I would think that the FIRST episode might have been more interesting to read) but once again... I am probably looking for something to whine about.
All in all, I look forward to watching the entire series in-order and filling in the cracks where I tuned out during the show's actual run. I had considered getting individual seasons of the show in the past, as I am an avid collector of TV-on-DVD, but I never got around to it. I am very pleased that I waited as the kitsch value of this complete box set is so high. If you have the means and even a passing appreciation for the show, I recommend it.
