(More customer reviews)"LIFE OF RYAN" is an MTV series created by Joey Carbone (Carbone Entertainment) which the first two seasons aired on MTV and the third season is featured on this complete series on DVD.
The series focuses on the life of pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, the youngest winner of the X-Games at the age of 13 and now focusing on the teenager from age 16-18, as he tries to become champion again.
Unfortunately, things are not as simple for the life of Ryan as his parents Gretchen and Randy have gotten into a divorce which both parents try to be civil but it for Ryan, it has hurt him emotionally.
As he tries to live life with his younger brothers Shane and Kane and his mother/manager Gretchen in surfer town San Clemente, he tries to have a relationship with his father who has found a new girlfriend. Helping Ryan deal with life are his best friends Casey, Tony, Taylor and Mitch. But throughout the series, Ryan struggles with divorce, his mother as his manager, his relationship with his father, his friends and also trying to find a girlfriend, managing multiple businesses and just dealing with his fandom and his "haters" while pursuing his quest to win another X-Games.
"LIFE OF RYAN: THE COMPLETE SERIES" features all three seasons on DVD broken up onto three discs.
SEASON 1:
1. CHASING CAMBRIA - Ryan likes a girl named Cambria but not sure if she digs him. Both Ryan and his best friend Casey have their first holiday with their parents now divorced.
2. 5TH WHEEL - Ryan spends time with his younger brother Kane. His father Randy is having a big party for Kane but his mother who attends, finds it hard to see her ex-husband with another woman and both Ryan and his mother reminisce of the past birthdays and how hard the divorce is for his mother.
3. CARELESS WHISPERS - Ryan goes to visit his father Randy and his new girlfriend Kristy but it shocks him when his girlfriend tries to get close to him and hug him and the more he thinks about it, it stresses him out more.
4. RAISING KANE - Ryan goes on a date with Tony's ex-girlfriend Julia and not sure if his best friend approves.
5. X-TREME DISTRACTIONS - It's time for the X-Games and it surprises him when he finds out that his father Randy and his girlfriend Kristy is coming. This ticks him off. Meanwhile, Ryan starts to hang out more with Tony's ex-girlfriend Julia.
6. HE SAID, SHE SAID - Ryan's mother is now moving on with her life and is going on her first date since divorcing and it makes Ryan feel a little uneasy.
7. DOWN GOES RYAN - Ryan breaks his arm during a fall during a competition.
8. HOME AND AWAY - Ryan wants to get his own house and get away from his family.
SEASON 2:
1. DON'T GO - Ryan and his mother and brother will have dinner with his father and new girlfriend. But things are made much more stressful as Ryan's father and mother are going back to court.
2. MY BROTHER'S KEEPER - Ryan is getting closer to Kayla. Meanwhile, he tries to coach his brother Shane. Shane feels a bit of pressure and stress because he is the brother of pro skater Ryan.
3. HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM - Ryan is upset when he wants to talk to his mom but she's always in manager mode.
4. SHECKLER, INC. - Ryan's business endeavors is going great and now he can expand on his own business. He also misses his girlfriend Kayla who has been gone for two weeks.
5. AND YOU JUST MIGHT BE THE ONE - The pro skater friends of Ryan worry that he may not be focusing on his skating and focusing a bit much on his new girlfriend. Kayla returns and Ryan can't wait to go out with her.
6. ODD MAN OUT - Ryan and his father Randy go on a father and bonding trip to the gun range.
7. MAN'S BEST FRIEND - Ryan wants a dog but his mother is against it. So, Ryan wants to see if he can raise one, so he borrows Tony's dog for a week.
8. SKATE IN HEAVENLY PEACE - It's Christmas time and Ryan is happy to have family and friends together. But unfortunately, he can't bring his father because his mother's boyfriend is coming and it might be too weird and it's stressing him out.
9. PARTYING WAYS - Ryan's friends have a surprise party for Ryan and while his girlfriend Kayla was important in planning the party. Ryan ends up not talking to her at the party (since he's greeting friends he hasn't seen for a long time). Ryan feels he can't give his girlfriend the time because of his career and feels he needs to breakup with her.
10. SINGLE LIFE - Ryan's now single. And so is his father Randy. Both go on a father and son bonding trip to Las Vegas.
11. NEW BEGINNINGS - Ryan finds out that Casey and Taylor have broken up but is more upset that his new roommate and best friend never told him about it.
12. PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE - Ryan is upset with Casey and Mitch for looking at his phone and assuming that he may be trying to go for Taylor.
13. CRACKS IN THE CREW - The breakup of Casey and Taylor is affecting the crew and now Ryan considers ditching his best friend Taylor.
14. TONY'S TEST - Ryan wants to know if Tony is dependable as a roommate, so as a test, Ryan invites him to travel to Austria. Will Tony pass the test?
15. FINALLY ON MY OWN - Ryan's mother and father are communicating and also Ryan gets stressed because his mother is trying to decide how her son's new home should be painted.
SEASON 3:
1. MY HOUSE, MY RULES - Ryan has moved into his new house but he starts to have many parties and everyone invited. With many drunk teens who eventually get into fights, break a hole into Ryan's house and even Tony leaving his used condoms in the ground, this episode is probably the most edgy of the series.
2. ADDING INSULT TO INJURY - Ryan builds a skatepark in his warehouse and while attending a tournament in his area, the audiences boo him.
3. BUSINESS BEFORE PLEASURE - Ryan is holding a celebrity golf tournament and his manager warns him of his friends attending and getting out of hand. But Ryan doesn't think his friends will cause any trouble...Will they?
4. RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW - Ryan Sheckler competes in X-Games 14 and tries again for a gold medal.
5. MODEL BEHAVIOR - Shane wants to become a pro skater and Ryan talks to his parents in giving Shane a chance to travel on tour with pro skaters for three weeks.
6. WHAT'S NEXT? - Ryan finds out that Casey and Mitch have been accepted to a college in Colorado and are moving in two weeks. For Ryan, this is devastating and a life changing experience.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
What I enjoy about "LIFE OF RYAN" are the various shots of San Clemente, outdoors, sunshine and it really helps the picture quality. With many reality TV series, when indoor scenes are captured, the amount of noise is just enormous. So, it was pretty cool to watch the series and notice how cool and vibrant the colors are and overall, looked good.
Audio quality features Dolby Digital stereo and dialogue is clearly heard. If anything, the series is front-heavy and there is a lot of utilization of music, thus you get a good dialogue/music driven audio track.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"LIFE OF RYAN" features three special features which are Ryan Sheckler skateboarding footage from various competitions. Included are:
* "KAMIKAZES" Skate Video (2:01)
* "PEACE WITH NOTHING" Skate Video (2:13)
* "CALL IT OFF!" Skate Video (3:16)
"LIFE OF RYAN" is really entertaining and if anything, I think the film really showcases the personal life of pro skater Ryan Sheckler. Showing that he's just a normal teenager who experiences the same emotions, stresses out and has real-life problems like every teen out there.
Granted, Sheckler is a multi-millionaire, has several businesses and is quite successful but the series is not so much about his skateboarding competitions and business life but mainly about how this athlete is dealing with his parent's divorce, dealing with his relationships with family and friends but how he has to live these separate lives of being a professional and having to be a regular teen and learning that for him, it's difficult.
But the heart of the series is his relationship with his mother and father. His mother Gretchen is a manager that wants to make sure his son knows what his schedule is and what he has to prepare for but during these tough times, when he needs his mother, she's often in manager mode and it cause a bit of friction between the both of them.
As for his father Randy, the divorce has hurt him financially and emotionally. And as tough as he looks as a businessman and biker, he cares about his son a lot and gives him advice. But because his father is more businesses minded and logical, it causes some friction between father and son as well.
If anything, the problems that Ryan goes through is trying to be the middle man between his father and mother. While dealing with the stress of competition and high school life, it's more than a teen can handle and it shows on camera.
Ryan seems to stress out with each episode and granted, he has every reason to. And you can see how that worry over his personal relationships with family has somewhat transcended into his relationships with friends, which are like family to him, it's understandable why his life seems quite dramatic on TV.
But the positive of the series is that many children and teens feel they have no way to go when they get into this stressed out or depressed state. When you have so many things coming after you, it all depends on how you deal with it. And for Sheckler, despite his...Read more›

Sex and the City - The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset) (2005) Review

Like the the first two reviewers, I wondered what the difference between this collection, currently on sale for $109.99, and the "Collector's Edition" on sale for $196.99. But since all I really wanted was to have all the episodes on DVD I went ahead and ordered the cheaper set. When I received it today, I read the back and toward the end of the top paragraph it said:
"Celebrate the show that explores the day-to-day - and night-to-night, world of single women in this, the definitive collector's edition.
With that read, I wanted to see if I really got the "Collector's Edition" so I called my girlfriend who bought her "Collector's Edition" at the regular price of $300 back a few years ago to compare the difference. Good news! Sounds like they're the exact same thing! What I received in my $109.99 set is a pink velvet spiral binder with various color pictures of the ladies and scenes from the show and short summaries of each episode. The DVDs are nicely tucked away, by seasons, in pockets of thicker pages after the summaries. The pink velvet spiral binder comes in a plastic sleeve for protection from scratches, etc. There's no way, however, to see if this DVD set was made in 2007. Everywhere I looked said 2005. Oh well, I'll be happy if all the DVDs work!
If you want to peek at what this set looks like I suggest clicking on the "Collector's Edition" for $196.99 and looking at Picture 4 of 9. It's the picture with the binder (closed and open) with the DVDs nicely scattered in front of it. That is exactly what I received today.

The Wire: The Complete Series (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)On the basis of previous reviews, you'd never know that this series was on the verge of being canceled at least twice, that it never made satisfactory numbers for HBO, or that it was almost universally ignored by award committees despite its fervid following.
There's a number of things for the faint-hearted or first time viewers to know about The Wire before you jump in:
1.There is no denouement, no simple, clear resolution at the end of every episode ala CSI, NCIS, or any other typical police drama. On the contrary, The Wire is the epitome of the "slow build", it takes episodes to get started, much less finished. As in life, there are rarely any easy, clear resolutions at the end. Unlike the black and white worlds of network tv, The Wire is all gray.
2.There is not a simple, single story line. Rather The Wire is characterized by complex, multiple story arcs that can extend over more than one season. It demands (and rewards) concentration, rather than escape. Redemption and revenge are possible, but not in one episode or one season. The Wire requires patience.
3.There are no clear cut heroes and villains (this is the anti-"Heroes" tv show.) There are only human beings, all flawed. McNulty, a hero, is an alcoholic who cheats on his wife. Even Marlowe, the apparently soulless villain, grapples with very human issues of loyalty and pride.
4.Though there are great, fully realized characters (almost too many for escapist viewers to follow), and though to some degree Baltimore, the city, is a central character, the abiding presences in The Wire are Baltimore's institutions and organizations: courts, city government, educational system, labor unions, police, newspapers. Even gangs are seen as just another organization. Unlike any other show I've ever seen, The Wire demonstrates how institutions are built from a complex web of relationships and motivations and seem to have an existence independent of those who participate in them. And it does so in such a subtle way that it's not automatically obvious. It doesn't appear to be about institutions, but it is. That's subtlety.
That's only a start. There's more that makes The Wire a challenge for viewers: it's non-linearity (it's more like a spiral), it's bleak view of cities and urban institutions; the seeming randomness of so many events that impact lives, etc., etc., etc.
All that said, The Wire, for those willing to make the investment of time and attention, is a transcendent, moving experience. However downbeat it's subject matter, it is, in the end, a true work of art, a masterwork, and as such ultimately enobling and uplifting. And just a thrill to watch.

The Andy Griffith Show - The Complete Series (1960) Review

(More customer reviews)Well, one good thing is that if you are angry because you bought the individual season DVD sets (like I did) and wished you waited to buy the complete series box set for the extras and corrections, you need not sweat it. The missing epilogue and minutes to "The Darlings Are Coming" and the missing epilogue to "Barney Mends a Broken Heart" from season 3 were not restored to this set. The laugh tracks to a few episodes from season 4 have been restored, but that wasn't a big deal to me.
The "extra extras" you get from this series box set are available individually elsewhere if you look around. The pilot "Danny Meets Andy Griffith" is available edited on the "Make Room for Daddy" 5th season DVD set. The pilot included here is also edited. You can also find "Return to Mayberry" on DVD online and the other bonus is the episode "Opie Joins the Marines" where Opie visits Gomer on "Gomer Pyle USMC," which will be released in that series' second season set in a few months. I wish Paramount could have gathered some behind-the-scenes stuff or commentaries or interviews (the actors are not getting any younger and in just the past few years, many important TAGS people have died like Howard Morris and Don Knotts). That would have made this set worth it, but nothing like that is included.
What bugs me the most, though, is the crummy packaging: Cardboard folders and pockets with cut-out photos on the characters printed on it. At least make it the same as the individual sets with the plastic, easy-to-use holders and the bold and colorful illustrations. It's a great series, I love the shows (even the color episodes), but if you have already bought the seasons and are wondering if the series set is worth it, I would vote, 'no.' In fact, if you haven't bought anything from this series yet, I would still choose the indivdual seasons to this set.

Iron Man: Armored Adventures Complete Season 1 (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)When the show first premiered, I was a bit reluctant on trying it out, but after tuning in for only a few episodes, I was hooked on not only the well-crafted storyline, but also the interesting cast of characters that would help carry the show throughout its first season. Howard Stark is killed in the first episode, and his son Tony must carry on his father's goal of collecting and researching the five magical Makluan rings. During this journey, he must also come to terms with his father's death, and the legacy he left behind when Tony is set to inherit the company when he turns eighteen. Along for the ride are Tony's friends, who all contribute something to either the storyline itself or to the development of our hero; who grows over the course of the series. The villains who are introduced feel like actual fleshed out characters, from the unstable and misguided Living Laser to the enigmatic and tragic Madame Masque, rather than obstacles that the hero must fight for the sake of filling time. As the show progresses, Tony begins to realize hidden secrets about his father he didn't know about and things begin to tie back to the late Howard Stark and how everything starts coming together in the end.
The cel-shaded animation is a unique look for the show, and helps it stand out from not only the other CG properties currently airing on television, but also the traditional animated shows as well. The cinematography is creative and dynamic; not only making the fight scenes fun to watch, but everyday tasks look and animated beautifully. While certainly no match for the theatrical works of Pixar and Disney, this show certainly feels like an aesthetic standard that all CG properties on television should strive to achieve.
Overall, I found this show to be a lot more than I thought it would be; especially in a genre I lost interest in long ago. I recommend this show to any sci-fi fans, superhero fans, or maybe even a mecha anime fan if you got time to kill. Really, anyone simply looking for an animated show with a good, developed story and a memorable cast characters should check it out.

Farscape: The Complete Series Review

(More customer reviews)I first started watching this program somewhere in the Second Season during its initial run on the SyFy Channel at the urging of my wife, who had been an avid viewer since day one. I had seen the Pilot when it was first broadcast, but never watched with regularity (at the time I was working a lot of overtime on Friday nights). I did come away from the Pilot very impressed by what appeared to be a great premise, excellent special effects, and potentially some great characters. Eventually my Friday evening schedule cleared up and once I started watching a couple of episodes I was completely hooked.
There is a definite 4 year story arc here; most of the episodes do tie together as the later seasons demonstrate. I won't elaborate on all the details of the program, mainly because there are many reviews here that do just that. What I will discuss is the quality of the box set that A&E has released, and has done an outstanding job of packaging and remastering the episodes. I had collected the old ADV releases over the years, and they did a good job of reproducing very good audio and video for the most part. What this set has done is go WAY beyond anything that has been on DVD previously. I don't know if this is the case, but it certainly looks as if A&E did a complete makeover on the video and audio on this set, and it is nothing short of SPECTACULAR.
Some quick notes about this wonderful package:
VIDEO: These episodes are presented in their original aspect ratios of 4:3 for Seasons 1-3 and 1:78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen for Season 4. Do not be mislead by other reviewers who claim that the final season of the show (which was indeed the only one filmed in widescreen) is not in its proper format. The quality of the video is STUNNING: details of all levels of color jump out at you, and the detail in close-ups and special effects are truly amazing. (A note here: I watched this on an Oppo BD-83 Blu Ray player which upscales standard DVDs to 1080i). The video is so good, I would swear I was watching a Blu Ray at times; THAT's how good it is. It is a remarkable improvement from the ADV releases of a few years ago (which up until the release of this set, were fetching a hefty price on eBay). I truly was stunned at the video...I don't think this show ever looked this good.
AUDIO: One word: phenomenal. The 5.1 mix totally immerses you in the story. All speakers and the sub-woofer are used perfectly and to to any extremes. The ADV releases had a very good 5.1 soundtrack, but the new A&E version has absolutely jaw dropping audio. Yes, it is THAT good.
PACKAGING: 5 "sets" of DVDs gathered in one glossy box keeping them all together. Each Season has its own "set" with the final set being reserved for a number of special features ("making of" documentaries, mostly). The other Special Features as promised in the description of the set here, are scattered throughout the various discs. I wish the glossy box was a bit more sturdy and easier to access the sets (do you open from the left or right? you decide). A minor quibble though compared to the overall satisfaction I've gotten so far from this new A&E release.
BOTTOM LINE: "Farscape" is truly an incredible show with excellent writing and some fine acting throughout its 4 year run. It would have been nice to have the final 3 hour installment "The Peacekeeper Wars" (which somewhat neatly ties up and concludes the series) included in the box, but rights issues prevented that from happening. You can certainly buy it separately on Amazon (and you REALLY must do so in order to see the conclusion of the show) and keep it next to this on your shelf. Speaking of which, the amount of shelf space saved with this package compared to the original 2 disc ADV volumes is incredible. Even if you own every ADV release like I do, this set is more than worth getting. The video and audio are markedly improved (even though it is never mentioned that the episodes are remastered, one look and you will be able to tell in an instant); and it truly does make a HUGE difference compared with the original ADV releases. The aforementioned amount of shelf space saved is indeed a plus.
Overall, 5 stars for the quality of the show, and this incredible new release with remastered video and audio. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Extras: The Complete Series (Includes Series Finale) Review

(More customer reviews)A few years back, Ricky Gervais created "The Office," a Dilberty satire on office work. Now, he's created "Extras," a wickedly funny satire on showbiz and acting, both seasons of which are contained here. And the fact that prominent actors appear in it -- as warped versions of themselves -- is just the icing on the comedy cake.
Andy Millman (Gervais) and Maggie Jacobs (Ashley Jenson) are film extras -- Andy is embittered by his lack of success and his inept agent (Stephen Merchant, Gervais' work partner), while well-meaning Maggie merely pursues a series of crew members on the films they work in.
The first episode features the two working in a biopic directed by a brusque Ben Stiller ("Would you stop going on about your f**king dead wife?"), and Andy gets himself kicked off the set. Their blunders continue with other stars: Kate Winslet in a nun costume, who teaches Maggie how to talk dirty to her new boyfriend ("I'd love it if you stuck your Willy Wonka in between my Oompa-Loompas!"); Samuel L. Jackson, and Patrick Stewart, who is writing a movie about psychkinesis and naked women.
And in the second season, Andy gets his Big Break -- BBC2 is producing his sitcom "When the Whistle Blows," but they dumb it down until it's popular but critically lambasted. Meanwhile, he and Maggie tangle with a bunch of new celebs -- the arrogant woman-chasing Daniel Radcliffe and Orlando Bloom, self-promoting Chris Martin, a hostile David Bowie, and Andy even stars in a play of Ian McKellen's about gay love (much to his discomfort).
Finally, the Christmas special takes us forward -- Andy has fame and fortune from his sitcom, and Maggie is still struggling at the lowest rungs. When Andy blows up and destroys his own fame, he is forced to confront the fact that he cannot be both an "artiste" and rich'n'famous.... and also who his true friends will always be.
It's a bit depressing compared to the past two seasons, especially when Andy has turned into a big stupid sitcom diva. But it is funny in an understated way, and Gervais' televised monologue is an absolute, heartbreaking gem.
Part of the genius of "Extras" is that it isn't much like any other showbiz parodies -- the lead characters are on the lowest rung of acting, and the big egos are real stars making fun of themselves. Sometimes they play really nasty versions of themselves, such as Winslet saying that she's only making a Holocaust film so she can FINALLY nab an Oscar.
The other half of the comic genius is Gervais' direction, with most of the jokes based on socially awkward situations. It's all about cringing and giggling at once, such as when Andy's pals see him pantsless in Ian McKellen's dressing room. Those hideously embarrassing situations -- usually with some hilarious dialogue involving the star guests (Bowie's "little fat man/nobody's laughing" song is a gutsplitter) are what it's all about.
Gervais underplays a sort of befuddled, cynical extra, but you can really connect with his struggles, even when he gets his own sitcom. No matter what, Andy can always be depended on to jam foot in mouth, and occasionally to attack Warwick Davis. And Jensen is clumsily charming as Maggie, who tries to be nice to everyone but says all the wrong things at the wrong time, when she's not being pursued by Orlando Bloom or offending Samuel Jackson.
From start to finish, "Extras" is an uproariously funny, barbed looks at the strange world of showbiz, with the self-parodying actors as the final perfect touch.

(More customer reviews)I was a slightly-more-than-casual fan of the show during its' initial run, but I phased out when the media decided to focus more on the antics of the celebrity cast members than the show itself (I call it the "Friends Syndrome).
Amazon sold this collection for under $100 as a Gold Box Deal recently and it was too cheap to resist. After receiving the series and taking a good look at the packaging, I am glad I made the impulse purchase.
The box set itself is designed to look like a 45RPM Singles Box, complete with metal buckles on the sides to keep it "locked" and a plastic strap on top. The box is cardboard but the sides are printed with nostalgic-looking textured paper, complete with cheezy "sticker art" highlights. The front of the box has a plastic window that exposes the first season's promotional cover. All in all it feels solid and durable and MUCH higher-quality than I expected it to be in when I bought it.
Opening the box: each season has been sectioned off in individual boxes with promotional art on them. Each disc inside the box in in a paper sleeve that emulates the sleeves that you would keep your 45's in. Very well-done.
In addition to all 8 seasons, the box set also comes with a miniature yearbook-style retrospective (complete with doodled-on 'paper' slipcover) that pretty much sums up the contents of the box and covers your main characters' timelines within the series. The feeling of 70's nostalgia fades when you go from page to page inside the book, but I am being picky, and if the weakest element of the box set is that the interior of the supplemental booklet feels more 80's than 70's, I am digging pretty deep.
Finally, for some reason the box set includes a copy of the final script for the final episode of the show. They even went as far as to bind the tiny teleplay with brass rivets. The box advertises that this item is "signed by the cast!" which SOUNDS neat, but if you are looking for an actual penned autograph you are obviously out of luck. I'm not sure why they chose to include the FINAL script of the series (I would think that the FIRST episode might have been more interesting to read) but once again... I am probably looking for something to whine about.
All in all, I look forward to watching the entire series in-order and filling in the cracks where I tuned out during the show's actual run. I had considered getting individual seasons of the show in the past, as I am an avid collector of TV-on-DVD, but I never got around to it. I am very pleased that I waited as the kitsch value of this complete box set is so high. If you have the means and even a passing appreciation for the show, I recommend it.
