(More customer reviews)SOME SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED IN THIS REVIEWFullmetal Alchemist is an amazing series, but one of its greatest achievements, in my mind, is that it managed to not only maintain its stellar quality over time, it consistently got better and better until it actually hurt to see the series come to an end. Seeing all of the plot threads that have been building throughout the whole series coming to fruition is a great payoff, sure, but it's made all the better by the fact that nothing feels like a cop-out; there wasn't a single moment where I thought "Oh, these guys were running out of time and so they just threw that up there." No, everything flows to a logical, incredibly satisfying and poignantly melancholy conclusion. It certainly isn't a Hollywood-style happy ending, but that was never what the series was about in the first place. And even more gratifying than the ending was being able to look back on how all of these characters had grown and changed throughout the series: Lust springs to mind first and foremost, having gone from being your stereotypical femme-fatale to a multi-layered, incredibly sympathetic and tragic heroine. And I never, ever thought I'd be able to empathize with a psychopathic monster like Envy, but the final scenes of episode 50 made me come really close to doing so, even as he... well, I won't spoil it for you here.
In short, Fullmetal Alchemist is an incredibly well done, superbly animated and acted show. The Japanese and English voice tracks are both equally impressive (one of the RARE few animes in which this has happened, the only other to my knowledge being Samurai Champloo). And sure, if you're reading this product description you're probably going to buy this anyway and you've seen the series before, but in case you haven't, just know that you're about to see some of the finest episodes of one of the best anime series ever. This world definitely goes out with a bang, and not a whimper.

(More customer reviews)These are possibly the best DVD's any Dawson's Creek fan can own. Each season is amazing. I do find it cheaper to order the DVD's individually. I ordered them new from amazon, and ended up paying only $107 dollars for all six seasons plus the finale. Sometimes Amazon will have sales, like Buy One Get One Free, or they will mark the DVD's 50% off. Depending on how fast you want them will decide whether you pay the extra money or not. These DVD's are a must for any Dawson's Creek fan!!

Samurai Jack - The Premiere Movie (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)This dvd isn't so bad; but it's just the first 3 episodes of Season 1. The 'never seen before episode' is the 11th episode (the one with the Scottsman on the bridge), which is also on the Season 1 dvd. It's disappointing that they don't tell you that on the description anywhere, so for any of you who planned on getting both this and the Season 1 set - just get the Season 1 set by itself.
Otherwise, this is a fine intro to Samurai Jack and is worth watching. I would rate the disc 4.5 out of 5 on its own.

(More customer reviews)Chances are, if you know anime and are looking at this, The Familiar of Zero, you probably already going to get it. And for good reason too, as you are going to find a welcome amount of what I call "good stuff" and a pretty good plot behind it all. My opinion is really,"You're not gonna go wrong with Zero", but I have to give you an idea of what the Familiar of Zero is about.
Our heroine, the cute and proud Louise, Louise de la Valliere, is absolutely incapable of performing even the most basic spells of magic elements. To her classmates, she is "Louise the Zero" for an unprecedented perfect failure rate with regards to successful magic. She messes everything up, and by "mess" up, I usually mean "blows" it up! You can't help but laugh at her failures and feel sorry for the proud Louise. That is how she presented.
When her class begins to summon all their respective familiars, she summons something completely different--a boy. And, of course, things really go downhill for her after that. She has him do everything for her--And I mean EVERYTHING. I hope you know what I mean. Her temper is fiery, but she is so bossy-cute, you wouldn't mind being her slave. Unfortunate for the boy, as he wants to get away from her. But then again, he has secret powers...
If you don't get this, you ruin the chances that the other seasons of 'ZERO' will get published here in the States. A sad thing, since it is a really good series. There are two more 13-episode seasons after this, just as funny. You really are not going to go wrong when you watch this, trust me. :D

Cowboy Bebop - The Perfect Sessions (Limited Edition Complete Series Boxed Set) Review

Growing up in the '80s and seeing the reruns of '70s imports (like Speed Racer), not to mention the whole Pokémon thing that hit while I was in high school, I know some people out there like those things but I find them repulsive and annoying. Silly caricatures with gigantic eyes and frame rates of about 2 per minute, almost like watching a slide show with really bad narration.
Then a friend pressured me to watch Cowboy Bebop on Cartoon Network. He knew my reservations about Japanese cartoons, but pushed me into it anyway (it was a Saturday night, I wasn't doing anything anyway...) and I haven't stopped thanking him.
This series is good. Not good, great. This is the program that anyone who says "cartoons are for kids" should watch. The first thing that I noticed was that the episodes were each standalone. Most of the popular animations of today are very series-oriented, if you miss one the next one probably won't make sense, and the whole thing feels soap-opera-ish. But not Bebop. Oh, it's true that there's an ongoing storyline, but you don't have to be familiar with it to enjoy any given episode. In fact, it might be good to watch them out of sequence once and then in order, you'll get everything on two different levels.
Then there's the music. It is easily the best music in a cartoon, possibly the best in a television series. Just like I don't like anime, I don't like jazz. Or so I thought, but many thanks to Yoko Kanno for proving me wrong on that count. It's original, it's catchy, and even though I didn't much care for a lot of it initially, it now has so much emotion attached to it that I have added it to my regular listening. I definitely can't say that about any other television series ever.
Oh, the characters. Where can I even begin? They have complexity and depth, worthy of some of the best movies to ever come out of Hollywood. They each have their own backgrounds, their own motives, they have personality. After twenty-six episodes, it's hard not to develop an attachment to at least one of them. You don't have to take my word on this; I've seen many others who agree with me on this. Besides, you could watch it and decide for yourself.
As far as I'm concerned, this is essential viewing. Not everyone might agree with me, but I have a feeling that there are many out there who would absolutely love this show if they saw just one episode. It turned me on to anime, and I'm pretty hard to sway in opinion. If you're into anime, this is a must. If you can bring yourself to realize cartoons as something other than Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, this is probably for you, too. It's for adults of all ages, and appeals for so many reasons.
By the way, the dubbed version may be better. Nothing against the original cast, and it's not a personal aversion to subtitles (I usually prefer subbed to dubbed), but the English cast are incredible. I've never seen that kind of attention or acting in translation. And, because of the nature of the show, I think it just feels better.

Naruto Uncut Box Set, Volume 12 Review

(More customer reviews)Seeing this coming to stores and online I immediately ordered this uncut box set for my Naruto collection. The set will of course deal with the final episodes of the quest to find the Bikouchu beetle and use it to locate Sasuke, and team 8's battle with a rival team who are trying to capture the Bikouchu as well. These episodes will deal with the crisis of a village rich with their own gold mine but sadly is taken over by a bunch of rogue ninja lead by one of the seven swordsman of the mist. The one thing I truly love about these uncut box sets is just that they show the blood caused by the injures in battle or stick with the language that some of the censors thought was to inappropriate to listen to on American t.v.(Adult Swim). Like always these box sets have clear and sharp pictures no distortions to worry about and the voice cast for both the Japanese and English cast were incredible. So for all Naruto fans rejoice for the coming of this box set, and if you're a stickler just waiting for those Naruto Shippuden episodes to come out just look at it this way were coming close to the home stretch...

Harry Potter Years 1-3 (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I was very disappointed in this boxed set. The movies, of course, are great but this boxed set was a big rip off. The only reason I didn't return it was because I promised someone my original copies of the first two movies. I already own the first two Harry Potter movies in their beautiful cardboard slipcovers. I was expecting this boxed set to have some continuity. Instead all they did was put the third movie (in a plastic case!) in a fancy box with the first two movies in their original (cardboard!) packaging. If you already own the first two movies do not waste your money buying this set. Just buy the third movie. You can always find your own box to put them in. If you want a boxed set, wait five or six years until all of the movies are released and buy it then. Maybe the packaging will be better. Yes Wolf, the third movie is in a plastic slip case not the nicer cardboard slipcase.

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 (Collector's Edition) Review

(More customer reviews)First and foremost, about the show: I never had an interest in watching it until I started seeing the trailers for "The Last Airbender" live action film. To me the show just seemed soooo kiddie-looking. However, after doing some reseach and finding almost total critical praise and a huge fanbase encompessing boys girls, men and women, I thought I'd give it a try. Man, was I blown away. This is definitely a cartoon for the ages. While it is lighthearted, it also explores darker themes as the characters are slowly fleshed out. My wife and I, as well as my two daughters, were completely captivated. 5-stars without question.
For the Collector's Edition, if you've already purchased the previously-released Book I collection, you DO NOT need this edition. I repeat, you DO NOT NEED this edition. Inside the fancy box is a DVD with a 20-minute documentary that explores the origins of this series with its creators. Not a bad documentary, but not worth throwing an extra $30 on the counter. Also included in the set is a small booklet that shows some earlier sketches as well as commentary from the two creators. Again, nice, but not worth a re-purchase. And last, the previously-released BOOK I collection is what you're actually getting inside this box. They just took the old edition (box and all), put it inside another box along with a documentary and booklet, stamped LIMITED COLLECTOR'S EDITION on the box, and then jacked the price up $10-$15 dollars. The distributor is trying to take advantage of the up-coming movie. Don't be duped.

Like the the first two reviewers, I wondered what the difference between this collection, currently on sale for $109.99, and the "Collector's Edition" on sale for $196.99. But since all I really wanted was to have all the episodes on DVD I went ahead and ordered the cheaper set. When I received it today, I read the back and toward the end of the top paragraph it said:
"Celebrate the show that explores the day-to-day - and night-to-night, world of single women in this, the definitive collector's edition.
With that read, I wanted to see if I really got the "Collector's Edition" so I called my girlfriend who bought her "Collector's Edition" at the regular price of $300 back a few years ago to compare the difference. Good news! Sounds like they're the exact same thing! What I received in my $109.99 set is a pink velvet spiral binder with various color pictures of the ladies and scenes from the show and short summaries of each episode. The DVDs are nicely tucked away, by seasons, in pockets of thicker pages after the summaries. The pink velvet spiral binder comes in a plastic sleeve for protection from scratches, etc. There's no way, however, to see if this DVD set was made in 2007. Everywhere I looked said 2005. Oh well, I'll be happy if all the DVDs work!
If you want to peek at what this set looks like I suggest clicking on the "Collector's Edition" for $196.99 and looking at Picture 4 of 9. It's the picture with the binder (closed and open) with the DVDs nicely scattered in front of it. That is exactly what I received today.

1. Comet's Excellent Adventure
Jesse is so self absorbed in his own problems with "The Rippers" that he mistakenly tells Michelle she can walk the dog by herself.
2. Breaking Away
Letting go of your babies is hard to do as Jesse and Becky find out when it's time for the boys to go to pre-school.
3. Making out is Hard to Do
Jesse's competitive streak is unleashed when he learns that the Rippers' new lead singer has brought more success to the band than Jesse ever did. This experience prompts Jesse to get serious and form a new band of his own. When invited to her friend Gia's place for a party, Stephanie arrives armed with Pictionary--but the events of this gathering prove to be quite different than what Stephanie expected.
4. I've Got a Secret
What good is a secret club if it's not a secret. Danny spills the secret that Michelle told him about their secret club. Michelle gets kicked out of the club because of it.
5. To Joey, With Love
When your substitute teacher is somebody you live with, it's hard to maintain a fine line between the two. This is the case when Michelle--whose third grade class is in need of a substitute--begs Joey to fill the position. Eager to work with the children and be a good role model, Joey does his best to make a good impression, but when class begins, all the kids want is a free comedy session. When their out-of-control behavior prompts Joey to get tough, he ends up sending Michelle to the principal's office--a decision that places a serious damper on their close bond. Meanwhile, Jesse reluctantly agrees to let Danny audition as a guitarist for his new band, but what Jesse doesn't realize is that this longtime king of spic and span also knows how to rock 'n roll!
6. You Pet it, You Bought it
Remember how you used to be lucky if you scored a couple dollars from your sidewalk lemonade stand? Well, after earning a cool $221.00 with her own stand, Michelle heads straight to the candy store--but gets sidetracked and comes home with a donkey. Danny agrees to let her keep it until morning, which results in a long, loud evening that is only calmed when Jesse stays up all night serenading "Shorty" with a certain television theme song. The family narrowly survives this grueling time with Shorty, and although Michelle is sad to part with him, she decides it is best to send him to a more appropriate home.
7. On the Road Again
Many things are not the same as we remember them from our youth. This is the case for Jesse when his new band tours and he returns to his old motel room. And he sees it's a dump.
8. Claire and Present Danger
As Danny starts spending more time with Claire, Stephanie and Gia fantasize about the possibility of becoming stepsisters. Michelle, however, is not quite ready for these types of changes, and her methods of sabotaging her father's latest relationship are both shocking and hilarious. Meanwhile, DJ experiences some troubles in her own love life when her boyfriend Viper begins feeling threatened by her intellectually.
9. Stephanie's Wild Ride
You know getting more mature when you not only hear that little voice inside you but you actually listen to it. Until then it's great to have somebody help you. Such is the case for Stephanie when she wants to put herself in danger and DJ stops her.
10. Under the Influence
Friends don't let other friends drive drunk. When Kimmy gets intoxicated at a party, DJ risks destroying their friendship when she refuses to let her get behind the wheel. While Kimmy is frustrated at being treated like a child, she may soften when she learns the emotional reason behind DJ's insistence. Meanwhile, after Michelle angrily snaps at the twins for getting in her way, she enlists the help of Jesse to make amends with them--a request that leads to unprecedented chaos in the Tanner kitchen!
11. Arrest Ye Merry Gentlemen
When she regrets purchasing a tacky Christmas gift for her father, Michelle convinces Jesse to take her back to the store on Christmas Eve for an exchange. Crotchety store owner Mr. Dreghorn is not very cooperative, however, and when Jesse and Michelle push him to the limit, he places them under arrest and locks them in the shop. Back at home, the family does their best to help the twins perceive Santa as something more than a frightening monster.
12. D.J's Choice
Stunned when Viper suddenly breaks up with her, DJ finds immediate comfort with former flame Nelson. As their common experiences with heartbreak help them reconnect romantically, DJ finds herself in a difficult situation when Viper returns, begging her to take him back. Meanwhile, an act of vandalism at the community playground prompts everyone in town to team up and repair the damage.
13. The Producer
Danny is initially delighted when Michelle takes interest in writing about him for a Take Your Daughter to Work assignment, especially since he is confident that his boss will be giving him a promotion. When he is snubbed for a producer position by Becky--who has not been working as long as him--Danny feels the pangs of jealousy and makes an impulsive decision to quit the show. When he is quickly replaced by the loud and obnoxious Phil Blankman, Danny's bottled-up resentment toward Becky leads to a sudden blow-up. Meanwhile, sugar lovers DJ and Stephanie have a face-off to see who can avoid sweets the longest, Nicky and Alex exasperate their parents with their frequent public tantrums, and Joey has difficulty coping when his favorite childhood snack is discontinued.
14. Super Bowl Fun Day
A promise made should be a promise kept. Joey should have kept his promise to take Michelle's science group to the science museum instead of a bar just to be able to watch the Super Bowl.
15. My Left and Right Foot
Some seemingly harmless teasing from DJ and Stephanie leaves Michelle feeling self-conscious about the size of her feet--but maybe some shrink wrap and ice water will help cut them down to size! Danny and Joey team up with Jesse to do a bedtime singing routine for the twins, just as they used to do with Michelle, but when Becky tries to join in, they have a hard time explaining to her that her "unique" singing voice doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the group.
16. Air Jesse
When she volunteers as a coach for a charity basketball game, DJ chooses Danny, Joey, and Jesse to play on her team. The only problem is that Jesse can barely dribble a ball (literally) and despite a cram practice session with the guys, he seems to be a hopeless case. But when a certain NBA sensation shows up at the basketball court, will he have what it takes to prepare Jesse for the big event? Meanwhile, Becky--who doesn't have the heart to be honest about a hideous blouse that Stephanie made for her at school--opts instead to sport it in public.
17. Dateless in San Francisco
As Danny prepares for his first Valentine's Day with Claire, Becky gets excited about what Jesse will have set up for them this year, but she is disappointed to find that he appears to be losing interest in being the "King of Romance" he once was. With this exciting day approaching, even Michelle's third grade class gets into the spirit. With their class party coming up, Lisa has the bright idea of pairing all the girls up with the boys, and Michelle and Teddy are placed together. Determined to turn up the heat a little bit, Michelle's efforts to push the romance only end up alienating Teddy. Joey, too, is having some relationship woes of his own; he has received a gift from a secret admirer, but he is afraid that it's from Mrs. Carruthers, the obnoxious woman who can't seem to keep herself away.18. 19. Taking the Plunge
Crushed when she receives a rejection letter from Stanford University, DJ is left with a feeling of uncertainty about her future. Kimmy, who knows that DJ will still be attending an excellent school somewhere, is concerned about what will happen to their friendship when high school is over. Unable to cope with the idea of losing her best pal, Kimmy decides that her best option is to elope immediately with her plumber boyfriend Duane. When DJ catches wind of this, she and Nelson fly down to Reno and change her mind--but when she leaves a note for her father explaining her whereabouts, a freakish misunderstanding prompts a frantic Danny to believe that DJ and Nelson are the ones getting hitched! Meanwhile, Joey is excited for the opportunity to meet with Queen Elizabeth, but his improper etiquette at the reception leads to serious trouble.
20. Up On the Roof
DJ tries to pull the ultimate senior prank. She put the principal's car on the roof. Then it starts raining. But Principal Robolard doesn't mind it.
21. Leap of Faith
When an elderly yet feisty woman guest stars on Wake Up, San Francisco with spirited stories about her bungee jumping hobby, Becky is inspired to spice up her own life with this thrilling new experience. Upset to learn that Becky is seriously going through with this, Jesse does his best to talk her out of it, but his efforts only result in friction between the couple. Meanwhile, when Michelle convinces Danny to let her attend a concert with DJ. Stephanie--who was originally supposed to go with her older sister--conspires with DJ and forces Michelle to surrender, but will the girls soften when they realize the real reason why their baby sister wanted to attend the show so much?

(More customer reviews)Yeah I said it. Season 8 sucked. It wasn't a really season at all. It was just something the writers scrapped together to get by and it wasn't good at all. First of all Randy? What the heck? What was the point of him except to be a hole filler for Eric. And he didn't even do a good job. He was horrible and just a big slut. Donna deserved something better. Okay second of all Jackie and Fez? Okay yes go through the whole entire series and you can see some scenes where you wonder if they'll end up together but to actually have it happen? It was horrible. I mean yes the things they did to each other before they got together to get back at each other was hilarious I'll give the writers that much but the rest of it after they actually got there....I couldn't watch it. It wasn't right. But the worst thing of all...the stripper. Okay why did Hyde have to go marry the stripper? I mean i loved Jackie and Hyde together and personally i think they were just as perfect for each other as Donna and Eric. But to have him go off and marry a stripper just wasn't right. They were making him too much like Bud when they'd already worked so hard to prove that he wasn't anything like him. So it was just a let down to see that all just disappear. That all the hard work Hyde put into proving he was a good man went poof the second that blonde bimbo walked in the room. I don't know maybe someone else has a different opinion of this and hates what I'm saying but i think this season could have been so much better. Lets hope that in the future there's like a reunion special and they rectify what they have done and make their loyal fans happy. Let's just hope.

If you love the Fullmetal Alchemist anime, this is a great box set to get. This box set comes with DVDs 5-7 of the series as well as booklets/inserts for each DVD. Each booklet contains beautiful artwork from the show, character profiles, and comments from production staff. The main box and the boxes that hold the discs and inserts are really well done; they keep everything safe and have great artwork.
I noticed the product description didn't have a rating. I, personally, wouldn't recommend this for those under 13-14 years of age. Things get violent and there are several adult topics prevalent (war, murder, politics, racism).

(More customer reviews)Look up the word `cool' in any dictionary and it says "see Cowboy Bebop"...well, not really...but it should, because Cowboy Bebop is the quintessence of coolness. If you don't already know, Bebop is a stylish 26-session masterpiece chronicling the thrilling triumphs and tribulations of those space-sailing, chain-smoking, bounty-hunting buddies, Jet Black and Spike Spiegel. Jet is a bald and burly bonsai tree collector with an artificial left arm and a comma-shaped piece of metal under his scarred right eye. A former ISSP officer--known on his home satellite, Ganymede, as the tenacious "Black Dog"--Jet is now the owner/pilot/mechanic of the spaceship Bebop. The wiry gunfighter and martial arts master, Spike, has fuzzy green hair, mismatched eyes and a checkered past. These two intrepid space "cowboys" hop from one astral gate to another to hunt down wanted criminals all across the galaxy, hoping to earn enough woolongs to enable Jet to finally add some actual beef to his famous "Bell Peppers and Beef" stir-fry. In Session 2, Spike and Jet rescue a Welsh Corgi "data-dog" named Ein from the notorious pet thief, Abdul Hakim. In Session 3, they meet up with an unscrupulous Blackjack dealer who turns out to be the infamous yellow-clad femme fatale, Faye Valentine. And in Session 9, they meet an androgynous red-headed net-diver with an occasionally invisible nose who calls herself Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky, IV. Only by working together can this motley little crew of hungry hunters overcome the ruthless gangsters, senile chess players, broken showers, biting mutants and bad mushrooms that stand in their way as they attempt to nab the endless lineup of bad guys profiled daily on Punch and Judy's Big Shot television show.
Cowboy Bebop showcases phenomenal jazz music and exquisitely detailed animation that perfectly captures the mean streets and spaceways of a future world that's simultaneously strange and familiar, with technology that's grungy and realistic (like the hardware of the original Star Wars trilogy) and a uniquely multi-cultural cornucopia of characters. Unlike most animes, Bebop is primarily episodic, so the shows can be enjoyed individually, without requiring the viewer to watch the entire series in one sitting. My personal favorite is the suspense-filled horror spoof, "Toys In the Attic," which opens with red-tinged video footage of a dingy tunnel, reminiscent of the long-forgotten Sega CD game, Sewer Shark.
The "Remix" of Cowboy Bebop allows you to hear the unforgettably exhilarating opening theme, Tank! (as well as the rest of the exquisitely-scored soundtrack), in speaker-rattling Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. This affordably-priced Anime Legends set collects the entire Bebop series (not the movie) on six colorfully silk-screened DVDs. A plethora of special features are included, among them: three English-language trailers for Cowboy Bebop on DVD; four Cartoon Network promos; interviews with Wendee Lee, the voice of Faye Valentine and Cartoon Network producer, Sean Akins; subtitled commentary on Session 1 with the Japanese voices of Spike and Jet, Koichi Yamadera and Unshou Ishizuka; commentary on Session 5 and 10 with Wendee Lee and ADR producer, Yutaka Maseba; a laughter-filled commentary on Session 17 with director, Shinichiro Watanabe, and legendary composer, Yoko Kanno; Session 24 commentary with the Japanese Faye, Megumi Hayashibara, and the Japanese Ed, Aoi Tada; a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Cowboy Bebop, called Session 0; plus a music video featuring the full-length version of Tank! The ONLY downside to this release is that all six discs are awkwardly crowded into one plastic keepcase, each held in place with tiny tabs that are easily broken. Alien Anthology Review

(More customer reviews)My local electronics store already had the Alien Anthology bluray on the shelves this Tuesday (October 19). At first I thought the street date had been changed at the last minute (it wouldn't be the first time). But it appears that all the websites still list the release date for next Tuesday (Oct 26), so I guess my local store must have made a mistake (it wouldn't be the first time for that either).
In either case, I already got my hands on the Alien Anthology set, and I thought that Alien fans who are still trying to decide whether it's worth the upgrade before next week's proper street date might want to know the following:
(Note: This review assumes that most of you have already seen the films, and there may be some very mild spoilers.)
[UPDATE: I've added LOTS more detail about the extras, including the extended Alien 3 doc. Find this under PROS section (3). In PROS section (1) I've also answered some questions from another customer.]
[UPDATE 4: More specifics on why the 3rd and 4th films' picture quality won't wow you as much as the first 2 films'. Under Cons section (1)]
[UPDATE 6: I've found more new extras on disc 6, including new deleted scenes from Aliens. Details in PROS section (3).]
PROS:
1) All four films look very good on bluray, and much better than the earlier DVDs, with the first two films looking the best. Alien almost looks brand new. Aliens still looks its age (sometimes), but it enjoys the single biggest improvement in picture quality in the jump from DVD to bluray that I have ever seen for a classic film (or pretty much any film for that matter). While there are still plenty of shots that still look soft or a bit grainy by today's standards, the entire film looks sharper than ever and the grain is far less distracting. Some sequences, like the marines' initial investigation of the abandoned colony, almost look like they could have been shot this year. The color quality and detail visible on the panning shot from the planet to Ripley's orbital hospital room at the beginning of the film totally blew my mind. Detail and texture are excellent throughout and I saw no signs that DNR had been overused. After experiencing Aliens on bluray, I wonder how I was ever able to tolerate the picture quality on the DVD.
[UPDATE: The Theatrical and Director's cuts of Alien both look equally great. It's my understanding that Ridley Scott made some minor alterations to things like contrast, etc. in the Director's cut, but I frankly didn't notice any difference between the two. I haven't watched the Theatrical cut of Aliens in years, as I much prefer the Extended version, so I may not remember which all scenes were added for the latter. However, I did not notice any correlation between picture quality and whether a scene was in the Theatrical cut or added in later, so I assume that they all come from the same source and are of more-or-less equal quality. If I have a chance to look at it again soon and do notice any differences, I'll post another update.]
[UPDATE 2: I've watched the first 25 minutes of the Theatrical cut of Aliens and can confirm that the picture quality is identical to the Special Edition. In other words, it will cause longtime Aliens fans' jaws to drop off right before they become temporarily blinded by its awe-inspiring glory. This is truly the greatest film restoration I've ever seen prepared for the transition from DVD to bluray. Because of the film stock used, I didn't think it would ever be possible for the film to look this good.]

2) All four films also sound greatly improved compared to the DVD. This is especially true for Alien 3. Dialogue which was hard to make out on the DVD is now much clearer and easier to understand. I did notice some audio sync issues with some of the third film's dialogue, but I think these are misalignments which were already present on previous DVD releases, and may therefore be inherent to the original film.
3) The new extras are extensive and excellent. Within the first couple minutes of sampling the new enhancement pods on disc 5, I learned a couple of tidbits I had been unaware of before. These are a wonderful extension of the already superb making-of documentaries. The MU-TH-UR interactive mode is easy to use and will probably prove helpful to those who are only interested in seeing certain parts of the behind-the-scenes material, but I haven't used it much. I've only sampled a couple minutes of the trivia track portion of this feature (titled "Datastream"), but so far it appears as though it will mostly be a re-hash of material you can find in disc 5's documentaries. The set also includes ALL of the extras from EVERY previous release of these films, as promised (at least as far as I can tell), in addition to the extended Alien Evolution and Alien 3 documentaries.
[UPDATE: The extended Alien 3 documentary includes significantly more footage of Fincher directing on the set (lenghtier character discussions with the actors, etc.) and more detail on the schism between him and the studio that I don't remember seeing on the Quadrilogy DVD. At one point during filming you see Fincher get on a microphone and say, "I can't believe Fox is the number one studio because they're all such a bunch of morons." Interestingly, while some of the new footage does reflect poorly on the studio, I think it also makes it easier to understand why some people had trouble working with Fincher. I personally find this longer cut much more interesting, but it hardly feels like an entirely new, revelatory version. Still, if you love a good behind-the-scenes documentary, the extended cut of "Wreckage and Rage: The Making of Alien 3" may help justify the upgrade to bluray.
By my estimate, disc 5 contains around 17 hours of documentaries, including an hour to an hour-and-a-half of new enhancement pods for each individual film (these are mostly extended interviews and production footage). I couldn't even tell you how many hours of content are on disc 6. So it's understandable, due to space limitations, that some of this material still appears to be in standard def. Although it's in SD, most of it has been enhanced so your bluray player will upconvert it (sometimes beautifully so) to fill a widescreen TV. I find the text slides on the still galleries of concept art on disc 6 (which ARE in FULL HD) much easier to read now. In disc 5's docs, most film clips, production artwork and photos, and many interviews will now fill the screen, while other interview clips appear pillarboxed with new imagery to the right and left instead of black bars (similar to the "Disneyview" feature on the Snow White and Pinocchio blurays, though mostly much less distracting than those were). It all looks good enough that I don't think many people will be too disappointed that some of these extras are still in SD.
BOTTOM LINE: The extras, both new and old, are a substantial improvement over the Quadrilogy DVD set (at least IMHO, your mileage may vary). I doubt many people will feel shortchanged here.]
[UPDATE 6: I've found more new extras on disc 6. There are some deleted scenes from Aliens, at least one of which - featuring Burke in a cocoon - I don't think I've seen before. The Patch and Logos image gallery will be appreciated by folks who love all the costuming/set dressing details. There's a video reproduction of a ride called "Aliens: Ride At The Speed of Fright" which is notable for two things: it's REALLY cheesy, and it features a very young Jeffrey Combs (I think this part is new - I don't remember seeing it on the DVD). The Parodies section is just some Alien-related clips from Spaceballs and Family Guy. You'll also want to keep an eye out for Easter Eggs on this disc.]
4) The set has a couple of impressive surprises that weren't mentioned in any of the studio press releases I've seen. Disc Unbound is an automatic feature: when you eject any disc from this set, the Weyland-Yutani logo will pop up on screen. You can then insert any other disc from the set and you'll go straight to the main menu - it will skip over all the studio logos and FBI Warning screens, making an Alien marathon slightly faster and less annoying.
I was aware that this set would include isolated score tracks for all four films (as well as alternate score tracks for the first two), but was unaware that you can also access each piece of music in any order from an index which includes even more unused music. I'm not certain, but I think I may have even spotted a couple of Bonus alternate tracks for Aliens that weren't even on the Deluxe Edition soundtrack CD.
5) For those who are hard of hearing, all 4 films and even the extras on discs 5 and 6 include subtitles in around 15 languages, including English and Spanish. Even the audio commentaries have subtitles in multiple languages! Each film also has multiple language audio tracks, though it appears that only the English receives a lossless one.
6) The packaging is the most elegantly beautiful I've ever seen for a bluray set. Inside the slipcase is a hardcover book with each disc held securely within its own page. These pages include photos from each film, as well as some basic info like plot synopses and director's credits. There's also a booklet and insert tucked in the back which explain how MU-TH-UR mode and Disc Unbound work, and list the content on each disc. It also has a note from Ridley Scott filled with tantalizing hints about what to expect in his upcoming prequel. Everyone will be happy to know that the package is very compact and will fit perfectly next to your other blurays. It's the same size as the Close Encounters of the Third Kind bluray, except that the spine is a little thicker since it holds more discs...Read more›

(More customer reviews)First of all, to those asking "why isn't this the complete collection?" I wish we could have gotten that, but Anchor Bay only has distribution rights for the first 2 films. The rest are in the hands of Dimension Films.
Now to trash a set that I've been wanting for a long time...
Ever since the UK got their version of Hellraiser 1, 2 & 3 in the Lament Cube, fans in the states have been clamoring for a release. Unfortunately special packaging is rarely released in the US because of complaints of shelf compatibility from both retailers and customers. Some of us, though, find unique ways to display these wonderful rarely-seen gems, and quickly grab them up.
I won't be doing that with this ridiculous set, though. It seems that Anchor Bay has said "OK, here's the packaging you want, but you have to take the total crap that's inside!" Seriously, why do I need the same copy of Hellraiser 1 that I just bought about a year and a half ago? Wouldn't it have been better to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film with the Lament Cube packaging along with the new material? And why do I need 2 copies of the first movie? Completely ridiculous. If I don't have a Blu-Ray player, the 3rd disc is useless to me. If I do have one, the regular copy of the first movie is useless to me. No matter what, the consumer is being forced to pay for something they absolutely do not need, even if they own none of the items in the package.
This release is a total dud, and I can't give it any more than 1 star due to the complete thoughtlessness on the part of Starz / Anchor Bay.

Naruto Uncut Boxed Set, Volume 1 (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)This is the kind of respect an anime series should get. Just translate the story as-is and leave the 'interpretation' and reaction to the viewer. Blood and all. [They are ninja you know...] Watch it subtitled for the full effect!
Don't get me wrong -- I fully understand the financial and practical value of releasing a dub version in order to reach the widest possible market. I understand that there are many people who just don't care to read the dialog instead of listen to it. And others who just don't want their pictures cluttered up with words.
But there are still those (like me) who want their anime as close to the original form as possible; uncut and in the original language, and with the original seiyuu (voice actor's) performances intact. So if that's what you're looking for, oh Reader Of This Review, RUN out and buy this set as soon as you can. The translation is good (well... except for "believe it", *sigh* Okay, okay... I can ignore that), the presentation fine and you get a nice bonus in the story-board booklet. But most importantly you get the whole the story of Naruto as originally intended... not just the parts deemed 'safe enough' for general American audiences.
Thank you, Viz, for giving us Naruto fans that much respect - and a choice. I, for one, eagerly await the release of the next set in this uncut series -- money in hand.
...I only wish the ONE PIECE anime could get this same respectful treatment as well. *cries*
2008 EDIT: Yes, this has both a dubbed English track and the Japanese language track with English subtitles. And yes, Funimation does have One Piece and promises us an un-cut release later this month. Woo hoo! Let the Pirate vs. Ninja wars really heat up!

Alias - The Complete Fifth Season (2001) Review

By the time the fifth season of `Alias' came onto the airwaves, the fans knew something was up: Jennifer Garner had suddenly become a box-office actress (and a soon-to-be mother), J.J. Abrams had his hands full with `Lost' and `Mission Impossible 3,' and the series was finally starting to show signs of its age (which included a rather large dip in the ratings), and it came to no surprise really when Abrams and Garner jointly announced that the show would not return pass its May Finale.
Despite the fact that the show now had an expiration date (and the episode order was cut from 23 to 17), Garner and company seemed to get really into these last episodes, giving them everything they had and actually brought the quality back to the early years. Early in the season the regular cast went through a large overhale, getting rid of two older characters and bringing in four fresh-faced rookies... And with the new cast (and the storyline of Sidney growing up and becoming a mother) brought some much needed new blood into the series.
In the form of a plot this final year focus's mainly on Syndey Bristow growing up and learning about all the responsibility's that come with life. She was thrown a heavy and heart-wrenching curve in the first season, and throughout the entire season she feels the repercussions from it, realizing that she is not invincible, she isn't as young as she used to be, and that her actions affect more people than just herself. So Sydney kinda moves into a mentoring position training and working with two new members to APO, and essentially passing the reigns off to them (it was mentioned that if the show had gone to a sixth season, Garner would have left the show and these characters would have become the main focus).
Since this is a final season, that means that included is not only the series finale, but the 100th episode as well. With only 17 episodes, the 100th episode was the fifth from the last and essientially served as a `reboot' for the series taking the story from the first 12 episodes and bringing it into the home stretch... especially by bringing back old foes and friends including Sark, Anna, Will, and a few other 'surprise' returns... while the final 4 episode successfully tied up 99% of the loose ends left throughout the series, by the final episode the audience was still left a little confused, but I think in a good way, because if this show proved anything it was that nobody really understands what is going on in their own life.
Season five, while not as strong as the first two season's is definitely a step-above the third and fourth seasons, and highly recommended. Note also that on the same day a "complete series" set will be coming out, so if you don't have any of the episodes, that might be the way to go...
