My 2 year old got this for his birthday in March. We watch it ALL of the time. He sings all of the songs and does the little hand motions that Steve does when singing. He knows all of the planets in the solar system and when he sees something that resembles saturn (any ball with what looks like rings), he yells to anyone around - 'SATURN HAS ICY RINGS'. No my younger son, 15 months, dances and runs into the room when he hears Steve.

Christmas Cartoon Classics Review

Christmas Cartoon Classics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The toons in this set are not classics because they are so great, but rather because of the fact they are vintage toons from the golden age of animation of the 30's and 40's before studios started making the animation cheaper with less frames.
These same toons show up on several different collections so basically buy the one that gives you the most bang for your buck.
Jack Frost is an Ub Iwerks toon from 1934. Jack Frost arrives in the forest, painting the leaves on the trees and warning the animals to prepare for the winter. An inquisitive young grizzly bear decides he wants to see what the world looks like when everyone else is hibernating. When Old Man Winter catches him unawares, however, he needs Jack Frost's help in getting back home to his warm bed.
Santa's Surprise (1947) features the first appearance of Little Audrey. Little Audrey and some other kids stow away inside Santa's sleigh. While Santa sleeps, the kids decide to give him a Christmas present of his own
"Somewhere in Dreamland" 1936 is a Fleischer studios toon. It's the story of two poor children who are out collecting firewood when they pass by a toy store, market and finally a bakery. They drool over the wares in the bakery window but walk away before the owner can come out and present them with two cupcakes. The kids go home and eat a meager supper before going to bed. They both dream they are in dreamland, where everything is free--cookies, candy, cakes, popcorn and toys. When they wake up it's all gone but the three merchants have stopped by to lay out a huge feast for them.
"Chrismas Comes But Once a year" Fleisher from 1936. A group of lonely kids are given broken toys, leaving these sad youngsters without a Merry Christmas. Professor Grampy, sees the unhappy kids. The brilliant inventor puts on his thinking cap to find a solution this problem. He heads into the orphanage and creates a series of homemade toys from kitchen utensils. Then he decorates the main room with soap chips, cotton and other items, creating a Santa suit from red cloth, stovepipes and a red bag. He rings a dinner bell and calls the kids in. The kids, seeing Grampy as Santa, rush in happily. They play with their new and better toys.
"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" Fleischer 1944. The Fleischer version of the classic tale.
"Hector's hectic Life" Paramount 1948. On Christmas Eve, Prince the dog's owner threatens to throw him out if he causes any more trouble. Just then, a basket arrives on the doorstep containing three puppies that look suspiciously like Prince. The puppies proceed to trash the house while Prince desperately tries to conceal the damage from his owner.
"Snow Foolin'" Paramount 1949 Singalong about the first day of winter, when all the animals go ice skating. It is December 21, and the animals in the forest must contend with a literal avalanche of snow. Winter is not all that bad, though. After donning their winter coats, they will be able to enjoy themselves skiing, skating on a frozen lake, and tossing snowballs. In just a few days, one and all will be singing "Jingle Bells."
Wonderful collection for its historical value.

My 2 1/2 yr old daugter loves anything Barney, but she specifically asks for this tape by name. The songs are new, lively and catchy-great for parentswho are tired of the same old songs. I actually fine myself singing along to some of these. My daughter loves to imitate some of the sketches and dances, especially the title song. I can't recommend this enough! Whoever wrote the songs for this movie should do another!

Barbie Movie Collection Review

Barbie Movie Collection
Average Reviews:

This has the first four Barbie movies in one, they are Nutcracker, Rapunzel, Swan Lake, and the best one ever - The Princess and the Pauper. It is a good mix of Barbie singing and dancing. The quality of the animation and the storys get better as they go on with the Princess and the pauper songs etc the best. There is some great humour in that one too which the kids really enjoy.
Hours of fun in here which will keep your little girl occupied. Also nice dancing in the first two (Nutcracker and Swan Lake). What I like about these movies is Barbie is very capable, she is intelligent and tries to help others. I know it probably sounds trite, but I like the fact that the movies teach good ethics to kids, about being part of a community, and respecting others.

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 (Collector's Edition) Review

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 (Collector's Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First and foremost, about the show: I never had an interest in watching it until I started seeing the trailers for "The Last Airbender" live action film. To me the show just seemed soooo kiddie-looking. However, after doing some reseach and finding almost total critical praise and a huge fanbase encompessing boys girls, men and women, I thought I'd give it a try. Man, was I blown away. This is definitely a cartoon for the ages. While it is lighthearted, it also explores darker themes as the characters are slowly fleshed out. My wife and I, as well as my two daughters, were completely captivated. 5-stars without question.
For the Collector's Edition, if you've already purchased the previously-released Book I collection, you DO NOT need this edition. I repeat, you DO NOT NEED this edition. Inside the fancy box is a DVD with a 20-minute documentary that explores the origins of this series with its creators. Not a bad documentary, but not worth throwing an extra $30 on the counter. Also included in the set is a small booklet that shows some earlier sketches as well as commentary from the two creators. Again, nice, but not worth a re-purchase. And last, the previously-released BOOK I collection is what you're actually getting inside this box. They just took the old edition (box and all), put it inside another box along with a documentary and booklet, stamped LIMITED COLLECTOR'S EDITION on the box, and then jacked the price up $10-$15 dollars. The distributor is trying to take advantage of the up-coming movie. Don't be duped.

The Lion King Movie Collection (1994) Review

The Lion King Movie Collection (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(This review is for the films only.)
Yes, I said trilogy. This set includes the Disney classic The Lion King and its two sequels,The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and The Lion King 1 1/2. All three are great films, which is surprising, due to Disney's history with doing sequels.
The Lion King is the classic story of a young lion club named Simba who is next in line to become king of the Pride Lands. As he gets older, his uncle Scar begins to despise him and Mufasa, Simba's father and Scar's older brother. Mufasa is king, which makes Scar furious, and he makes a plot to kill them both. The plot is proven to be a success. Mufasa is killed and Simba, believing it to be his fault, runs off. He leaves the Pridelands and meets Timon and Pumbaa, a meekat and warthog who eats bugs. Simba soon joins the two and adopts their "Hakuna Matata"(it means no worries)lifestyle. Soon, Simba grows up and one day comes across his old friend Nala, who tells him that Scar is destroying their home. Simba at first disagrees about doing something about it, but after meeting with a old friend of his father named Rafiki, a wise mystic baboon, Simba gets back on track and decides to challenge Scar and become......The Lion King.
This movie is truly one of the best animated movies ever made. With some amazing voice-overs(including James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Whoppi Goldberg, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and a engaging story, The Lion King is truly a classic to behold. Five Stars.
While probably the least interesting of the set, The Lion King II: Simba's Pride is still one amazing sequel. The story revolves around Simba's and Nala's daughter named Kiara. Kiara one days ventures into the territory of the lioness named Zira. Zira is the wife of Scar and she wants revenge on Simba. Zira has a young lion club named Kovu and while Kiara is in Zira's territory, she and Kovu get to know each other. Soon, the two parents show up and Simba takes Kiara home. At her home, Zira comes with a plan: she will train Kovu to kill Simba by getting to Kiara. Years later, they are now grown up and while Kiara is on her first hunt, a fire, set off by Zira's other children, is burning the pridelands. Kiara barely makes to high ground and Kovu arrives just in time to save her. Simba sees him and Kovu tells him to give him a chance, while truly trying to kill him. Meanwhile, Rafiki is trying to get Kiara and Kovu together, beliving it could stop the feud between the two families. It proves to be a success as Kiara and Kovu fall for each other. Soon Simba tries to get to know Kovu better and finds out the truth about Kovu plans for Simba, which Kovu now doesn't want to go through with, due to his feelings for Kiara. Kovu gets banished and Kiara runs off to find him. Zira now decides to take on Simba's pride by force and kill Simba by herself. Now, Kovu and Kiara must stop this before the worst happens.
Better than most sequels, Simba's Pride brings back all the characters from the original and introduces fascinating new characters. The story, while less interesting than the first, still works for this film and the voice-overs are good as well.
Four Stars.
The newest addition to the series is The Lion King 1 1/2. This is the first film's story, told from Timon's and Pumbaa's point of view. The story begins with Timon and his life before he took on his Hakuna Matata lifestyle. He makes tunnels for a living, but always screws them up. While Timon's mom beleves he just hasn't found his place yet in the clan, Timon, along with his Uncle Max and the other meekats, believe he is just a klutz and he isn't gonna get better anytime soon. Timon decides it's time to find the home of his dreams and sets off with his mother's permission. While on his quest, he meets Pumbaa and the two form a "aquaintship", which soon becomes a friendship. They soon find their dream home and everything seems perfect until one day they find Simba and decide to raise him until that fateday when Nala arrived. When they hear Simba has gone back to the Pridelands to become king, Timon and Pumbaa must now help Simba regain his right to become the rightful king of the Pridelands.
This one is incredibly funny and also, very clever. The idea of seeing the story from Timon and Pumbaa's point of view is delightful and the laughs are plenty. Overall, a new addition to the series that is fresh and fun. I give the Lion King 1 1/2 five stars.
I hope this review was helpful. I hope you enjoy this set of movies as much as I did.

Disney Pixar DVD Three-Pack (Toy Story/A Bug's Life/Toy Story 2) (1998) Review

Disney Pixar DVD Three-Pack (Toy Story/A Bug's Life/Toy Story 2) (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a little bit skeptical about this great buy, but it's true. You get three great Pixar movies in DVD format for a great price. On each disc you can choose widescreen or fullscreen viewing, you can get English captions, there are sneak peeks and outtakes, and each has an extra cartoon: Toy Story carries the entertaining short "Tin Toy" (with a remarkably horrid looking infant); Toy Story 2 contains a Luxo, Jr. cartoon; and A Bug's Life has "Geri's Game".
As another reviewer has stated, if it is the special features you crave then this is not the collection for you; however, if you just want to watch the films and don't care about the extras, this is a remarkable value.

Who Are The DeBolts? (And Where Did They Get 19 Kids?) (1977) Review

Who Are The DeBolts (And Where Did They Get 19 Kids) (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Who Are the DeBolts? (And Where Did They Get 19 Kids?" won the 1977 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It was up against "Children of Theater Street," "High Grass Circus," "Homage to Chagall: The Colours of Love," and "Union Maids." I mention this simply because looking over this list it is rather striking to realize how much documentary films have changed in the past three decades. Today the attention is paid to expose documentaries by the likes of Michael Moore, while what we have here is a documentary that celebrates its subject.
When Dorothy DeBolt's first husband died, she was left a widow with seven children, two of who were adopted from Korea. She moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969 and adopted two Vietnames boys who had been made paraplegics by the war. She then met and married Bob DeBolt, who had a daughter from his previous marriage. The DeBolts went on to adopt ten more children, nine of who were physically handicapped. The finally tally shows seven adopted children from Vietnam, four from Korea, one from Mexico, one African-American, and one Caucasian. John Korty's documentary shows us that this remarkable family and not only how they function each day but how they meet the many challenges posed by their particular situations.
The documentary only runs 72 minutes so some of the kids get more of the spotlights than others. Karen was born without arms or legs and not only learns to play the xylophone in the school band but how to do her share of chores around the house. J.R. is the latest addition to the family and although he is blind and can only walk with crutches, he insists on going to public school and the inspirational highpoint of this film might be watching him make his way from the house to where he catches the bus to school. Not that this story is wall-to-wall miracles, as you shall see, but you have to be impressed by the way Dorothy and Bob are raising these kids (and how they all help to raise each other). There is a lot of love here to be sure, but there is also the DeBolts' insistence that their children fit not only in the idealized household of this Melting Pot home but in the real world as well.
Of course, it will be difficult for most parents to watch this documentary and not feel like something of a failure in comparison. After all, if you have ever reached the end of your patience as a parent and you can count the number of your children on one hand, then how could you ever manage to deal with nineteen children, even without mixing special needs into the equation? Surprisingly, Dorothy and Bob do not come across as saints or miracle workers but rather as loving people with MONDO organizational skills. Korty is not particularly skilled as a filmmaker, but basically even if you are not doing anything special you cannot really go wrong pointing your camera at this family.
On the DVD extras you will find a 1982 featurette, "Steppin' Out: The DeBolts Grow up," which runs 49 minutes and is directed by Jon Else, who was the cinematographer on the original documentary. This gives you an opportunity to see what some of the kids are up to five years later, so things have not really changed all that much. The surprise is that they have only added one new member in that time (do grandkids count?). The other special features are all text files: "DeBolt Family Updates," "Bob and Dorothy Bios," "Filmmaker Bios," and "Adopt a Special Kid." That last one provides information on the organization founded by Dorothy. In "Steppin' Out" we see that Dorothy and Bob actually leave the house from time to time to do public lectures and spread their particular parental gospel.

Kelly Peters: Make It Happen - Hip Hop (2006) Review

Kelly Peters: Make It Happen - Hip Hop (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have rented every single dance video for breakdancing, hiphop, and krump available on Netflix (about 30) and bought the rest(another 10). This one is the best for hiphop. Most hiphop videos teach you a routine that requires about half of a large room by yourself to do and no way would help you in any social situation. This video teaches you moves that can be done in little space like in a typical party. Most of the videos also have lots of jazz type moves that are a little ridiculous. Not this one. Finally, the instruction is slow and paced so you can actually learn the move rather than watch the blurr and try to decipher it with the various slow motions of the DVD player (which is too time consuming). I love this DVD.
If you like this one you might also like "Breakdancing Fundamentals" as it is another well put together DVD, albeit with a different style of dance. There are some other good breakdancing videos out there, but nothing decent in the hiphop genre that is practical and wellmade.
I beg Kelly Peters to come out with volume 2!!

If you want to learn Hip Hop, Kelly Peters will Make It Happen for you! Kelly’s "One Step at a Time" teaching method introduces new production techniques that make it easy to learn even the hardest moves. It’s simple to follow because he reverses the picture, so it’s just like looking at a dance studio mirror. As a result, when Kelly says "Go right", he moves to your right! He also takes time to break the movements down, very slow, so you don’t have to keep rewinding and he uses lots of close ups, slow motion, and split screen so you really get the details of the moves. Kelly teaches the building blocks of true Hip Hop which you can use to make your own combinations. He also explains the elements and history of Hip Hop culture. Kelly is joined by his crew of real kids who help demonstrate dances like The Freak, The Prep and the Bus Stop. The DVD includes special features and three bonus moves: The Harlem Shake, The Wave and The Baby Freeze.

I only wish it had the Original "Were the Chipmunks..." theme song from the 80's cartoon. I hope they release a regular set of the cartoon soon too.

Strawberry Shortcake - Best Pets Yet (2004) Review

Strawberry Shortcake - Best Pets Yet (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was "berry" lucky to be able to see an advance screening of this DVD at the second Strawberry Shortcake Convention in Cleveland. It was an unfinished copy, missing a lot of the sound effects that will be present in the final copy. However, it gave us a look at the new title sequence, as well as a taste of the new format for these DVDs. They are now going to be divided into two 22-minute episodes, instead of one longer one.
This is, in my opinion, the best of all the Strawberry Shortcake DVDs to date. The stories are cute and entertaining, and the shorter episode format keeps the attention span a little better. The first episode, while not entierly consistent with the first four DVDs, explains how Strawberry gets Pupcake. The second is a story very obviously inspired by the 1980s Pets On Parade Strawberry Shortcake cartoon. (In fact, the same person from American Greetings worked on both stories, another tidbit learned at the Convention.) This one is great not only because it features the cartoon debuts of all the pets belonging to Strawberry's friends (including Apple Ducklin' and Shoofly Frog, who have yet to appear in toy form) but it introduces a brand new character, Peppermint Fizz, and her pet lizard Cola Chameleon.
In the context in which I saw this cartoon, I was able to get the reactions of both intended audiences - children and collectors. The children loved it; they sang along with the theme song and their eyes stayed firmly fixed on the screen. As for the collectors, it's quite fun to hear gasps of joy from grown people when their favourite pet appears onscreen for the first time. ;-)
If Strawberry Shortcake appeals to you or your children, this DVD will definitely NOT disappoint.

Billy Blanks - Tae Bo Kicks Review

Billy Blanks - Tae Bo Kicks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought this was a wonderful DVD because of the following factors:
*The goal of this Billy Blank's DVD is to get kids off their feet and exercising. In this day and age of television, video games, and a joke of physical education in schools, it's up to parents to stress the importance of regular fitness activity.
*The diversity is great. The children on this DVD consist of both boys and girls, ages of about 5 to maybe 12 or 13 years old, all sizes from thin to slightly chubby, and different nationalities.
*Billy Blanks is just a very good instructor and you can see why he's loved by young and old. He motivates the kids and makes the moves entertaining for them, even throwing in a couple of old dance moves. :-) Billy Blanks speaks from the heart and you can tell that he honestly wants everyone to be fit.
As far as the fitness level, I could see kids doing this but it gets a little trickier when you get to the floor exercises if you haven't exercised in a while. The good thing about this particular DVD is since it's geared towards kids, Billy places less emphasis on getting moves perfect, his main focus is to get the kids to realize that exercise is fun.
Overall, I think this is a great DVD to add to your collection. It's something you and your kids can enjoy doing together.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - Season One, Vol. 1 (1983) Review

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - Season One, Vol. 1 (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season 1 - Volume 1: He-man & the Masters of the Universe! The classic 80s cartoon FINALLY arrives with all its memorable characters, stories & fantasy, digitally remastered with extras! This fall - mark the date! October 18th! Part 1 of 2, Season 1, this set is chock-a-block with amazing extras. The hit cartoon adventure series brought to life the adventures of Prince Adam & his alter-ego, the mighty He-Man battling the evil Skeletor to protect the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Son of King Randor and Queen Marlena of Eternia, his faithful sidekick was the cowardly green & orange pet tiger, Cringer. "By the power of Grayskull!" Adam's cry in times of danger, together with his magical 'Sword Of Power' transformed them into the mighty He-Man and the ferocious tiger, Battle Cat. Aided by Man-At-Arms, Duncan (the slightly older scientist and Adam's mentor), his adopted daughter Teela (Captain of the Guards and Prince Adam's aide), the quirky & comic Orko (the little floating magician) & Ram Man (kind hearted, but slow "human battering ram") with his winged ally Stratos, the team faced the forces of evil. The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull entrusted Prince Adam with the Sword of Power to defend the magnificent kingdom of Eternia and Grayskull - said to hold the powers to rule the entire universe.
Heading the forces of darkness was Skeletor, the evil hooded skull face, residing on the dark side of the planet in his powerful fortress, Snake Mountain. While the savage, dim-witted Beast Man, who possessed telepathic control over many animals was his right hand; it was Evil-Lyn, the incredibly shrewd witch who played on Skeletor's troop for sheer convenience, only to assume power for herself at the right moment. The cyborg-like Trap Jaw, aquatic warlord Mer-Man, and the three-eyed, pan-visioned Tri-Klops completed Skeletors army.
The show ran for two seasons, of 65 episodes each - hence the DVD release of each season has been split into 2 Volumes each, over the next 2 years. Initially, many of the stories put our heroes against Skeletor, revolving around Castle Grayskull. As the series grew the adventures took them to many different locations and foes, often putting characters on both sides of the battle. Sometimes criticized for being too dark & violent for its time, this claim seems a little redundant in today's age of children's graphic animation. Particularly note-worthy is that each episode ended with one or two of the characters presenting a moral from that episode's tale - the consequences of thoughts & actions, which makes the series particularly relevant given the times we live in. For fans of the show - its a great chance to relive those golden moments of childhood, & hopefully it will open the door to a whole new generation of fans, adults & kids. Get ready to feel the power of Grayskull!

Air Bud - Golden Receiver (1998) Review

Air Bud - Golden Receiver (1998)
Average Reviews:

Not many sequels are a good as the first, but this is an exception. When Bud appears in his uniform you react much like if the band just started with a John Philip Sousa march. Bud makes you swell with good feelings. Like the first movie, the dog shots are real and not just special effects. You do not need to like football to be cheering. I find the only time ball games are a good spectator sport is when Air Bud is starring. But then I have a couple of golden retrievers and 10 other dogs. You don't need kids to love it.

The creators of the original AIR BUD score once again with this all-new, hilarious heartwarming hit! This time out, Buddy, the hoop-shooting, hotshot canine, tackles a new sport -- football. When his teenage owner reluctantly becomes the school's new quarterback, Buddy catches the spirit and joins the team. Soon, the two find themselves leading the Timberwolves to the state championship. But victory hopes are sidelined when two sinister Russian circus owners take a bite out of everyone's plans and dognap Buddy for their star attraction. So give three cheers for Disney's AIR BUD: GOLDEN RECEIVER. Full of outrageous fun and adventure, it goes the whole nine yards for family fun.
