(More customer reviews)Growing up as a child in the 1970's I remember watching THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY every Sunday evening at 7pm. I of course enjoyed the cartoons but also enjoyed the many live action Dinsey movies such as THE SHAGGY DOG, THE SHAGGY D.A., POLLYANNA, THE WHIZ KIDS movies and of course the WITCH MOUNTAIN movies. I remember looking forward to ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN and would make it a point to never miss this movie when it aired.
The story is about a brother and sister, Tony & Tia, who along with their alien family tried to migrate to Earth but crashed upon arriving. Tony and Tia then try to locate their family with the assistance of a widower while trying to avoid a rich villan who wants to use the kids Extra Sensory Powers (ESP) to further his greedy goals. As a child I actually found this movie to be very scary. I actually feared for Tony and Tia. Now as an adult it has lost the scary aspect. That comes with age I guess. It is still a good watch though.
I have wanted to purchase this film for years so my children could watch it. Now that they are pre-teens and begining to lose their childhood innocence I was finally able to purchase this new DVD. As I suspected they were reluctant to watch this movie and the sequel RETURN FROM WITCH MOUNTAIN. I finally got them to watch the films and they did enjoy the them but obviously it did not have the same effect on them as it did me. However younger children, especially those who have not been spoiled by CGI special effects will no doubt still enjoy the films. I tried to explain to my children that as a grade schooler I had a huge crush on Kim Richards (Tia). I got teased for that and of course when I teased my boy about his attraction to Hillary Duff that was a different matter. Go figure.
The DVD has some nice special features. Interviews, cartoons and other such material. I don't have enough positive things to say about Disney's old movies being offered through their Vault Disney line of products.

Strawberry Shortcake - Best Pets Yet (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)I was "berry" lucky to be able to see an advance screening of this DVD at the second Strawberry Shortcake Convention in Cleveland. It was an unfinished copy, missing a lot of the sound effects that will be present in the final copy. However, it gave us a look at the new title sequence, as well as a taste of the new format for these DVDs. They are now going to be divided into two 22-minute episodes, instead of one longer one.
This is, in my opinion, the best of all the Strawberry Shortcake DVDs to date. The stories are cute and entertaining, and the shorter episode format keeps the attention span a little better. The first episode, while not entierly consistent with the first four DVDs, explains how Strawberry gets Pupcake. The second is a story very obviously inspired by the 1980s Pets On Parade Strawberry Shortcake cartoon. (In fact, the same person from American Greetings worked on both stories, another tidbit learned at the Convention.) This one is great not only because it features the cartoon debuts of all the pets belonging to Strawberry's friends (including Apple Ducklin' and Shoofly Frog, who have yet to appear in toy form) but it introduces a brand new character, Peppermint Fizz, and her pet lizard Cola Chameleon.
In the context in which I saw this cartoon, I was able to get the reactions of both intended audiences - children and collectors. The children loved it; they sang along with the theme song and their eyes stayed firmly fixed on the screen. As for the collectors, it's quite fun to hear gasps of joy from grown people when their favourite pet appears onscreen for the first time. ;-)
If Strawberry Shortcake appeals to you or your children, this DVD will definitely NOT disappoint.

Air Bud - Golden Receiver (1998) Review

(More customer reviews)Not many sequels are a good as the first, but this is an exception. When Bud appears in his uniform you react much like if the band just started with a John Philip Sousa march. Bud makes you swell with good feelings. Like the first movie, the dog shots are real and not just special effects. You do not need to like football to be cheering. I find the only time ball games are a good spectator sport is when Air Bud is starring. But then I have a couple of golden retrievers and 10 other dogs. You don't need kids to love it.

Yu-Gi-Oh - The Movie (2004) Review

1) A girl starts crying at the end of the movie because it was over and she didn't want it to be.
2) The promo cards given away at the movies caused multiple fights over them. (This actually did happen when I saw the movie.)
Anyways, this is definitely the best anime movie that I have ever seen. After viewing the abysmal "Enter the Shadow Realm" series, I was doubting whether the movie would be good... but believe me, it was.
Yugi and his friends face their greatest challenge when their arch-rival Seto Kaiba obtains powerful cards from the now retired Maximillion Pegasus. More is at stake this time than a monster card championship, or even the rescue of Yugi's amateur-Egyptologist grandfather. Kaiba's challenge coincides with the discovery of the tomb of Anubis by a team of Egyptian archaeologists. The jackal-headed god is portrayed as an evil sorcerer whom the Pharaoh Yami defeated 5,000 years ago. The resurrected wizard uses Kaiba as a pawn in his plan to destroy the world, with everything hinging on the card game between Yugi and Kaiba. The plot is just one good thing about the movie, though.
Yugi and Joey really develop their friendship throughout Yugi's duel with Kaiba. Also, the action is just plain awesome.
Overall, any fan of the series will love this movie. A definite infinity/100.
P.S. My favorite quote in the movie comes from Seto Kaiba: "Let me get this straight. You're going to defeat me with a creampuff and an elf?" Kaiba does it again- makes you laugh your ass off.

4.Ham III is the grandson of Ham I (I bet you figured that out on your own), the first chimp in space, III being currently employed as a simian cannonball with a circus.

This underrated cartoon is actually a lot funnier than you'd think. The animation won't make Pixar lose any sleep, but is pretty good anyway, and the humor will tickle your funny bone without ever once resorting to lowbrow potty jokes. [Note: Beware of the puns]
Although not in the class of Wall-E or Finding Nemo, this is one that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Jimmy Neutron - Boy Genius (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)After reading the previous reviews I didn't feel desperate to watch this terrific movie. Buy this movie! I am 32 years old and I don't have kids. But, I laughed-out-loud all through this movie. Jimmy's best friend (the guinea pig for all of Jimmy's dangerous experiments) deserves an Oscar for best supporting actor in a comedy! Now that's a friend! If you can't tell already - Jimmy is really smart and creates cool gadgets. Oh and Jimmy has built his very own gadget workshop (accessed via a secret elevator entrance in the back yard) under his house. At no time did this movie seem slow. You (or maybe your kids) will barely have time to recover from one laugh to the next or between exciting action scenes. There is a very cool and super-loyal robot dog too! This movie can help ANYONE forget their problems and escape into Jimmy's world!(that is saying a lot!) I am crossing my fingers for many sequels. If the creative geniuses who made this movie are perhaps reading - Job Well Done!

Tom and Jerry - The Movie (1993) Review

ever attempts at Tom & Jerry ever seen. They had none of
the atmosphere or spirit of the classics. They were badly
drawn, had terrible sound effects and little of the
memorable big-band orchestra music which Tom & Jerry was
well-known for...
Why do I mention this?
Well, I'll tell you...
It's because even those awful, late Tom & Jerry episodes
were a whole lot better than this absolutely terrible movie.
"Tom & Jerry - The Movie" is an insult to the fans and almost
tarnishes the memory of the greatest cartoon characters of
all-time.
Stick to the originals!!!

Barbie as Rapunzel (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I was so surprised to see the lukewarm reviews about this video. My 4 1/2 yr. old son and 2 1/2 yr. old daughter watched it repeatedly when we rented it from the video store, so now we are buying it.
I watched it with them several times and was completely enchanted with the original twist on the familiar Rapunzel tale. This version is full of interesting characters, including dragons, dueling kings, and even children. I loved the entire concept of the magic paintbrush as a portal into the village. How unique!
Sure, the animation wasn't exactly as well-done as, say, "Finding Nemo," and the story line was less than perfect, but it was certainly exciting and interesting, even to an adult who was watching it repeatedly with her preschoolers.
I was hesitant to introduce my daughter to the world of Barbie, so to speak, but now that there are such fun new fairy tale characters and ideas to explore, I am much more of a fan.

The Gnome-Mobile (1967) Review

(More customer reviews)I accidentally recorded this film on VHS video tape about seventeen years ago from TV and I have taken special care of it ever since. The fact that it is finally being released on DVD is like a dream come true. It's one of those rare movies that capture the innocence of a bygone era, a time when excellent, feel good, family movies were made. It is with such movies that Disney defined the term family entertainment and that made a whole lot of difference to those of us that grew up with these films. Call it nostalgia if you will but movies are about entertainment and to me entertainment means that you can let yourself go for 90 minutes or so and travel to the faraway places in your imagination where the burdens of everyday life are nonexistent. Any movie that can achieve this is- to me- well worth a place in my collection. The Gnome Mobile is definitely one of those films and I would be a happy man if my son would grow up watching films like TGM rather than all the violent stuff that is so popular among youngsters nowadays.

The Little Vampire (2000) Review

A very winning cast, great location, superb kids' story to work with, good production make for some campy scariness for kids with entertainment for mom and dad as well. Charming little movie that appeals to the kid in all of us.The predicament of the cows really did make me laugh out loud.
The acting by one and all was excellent, especially Richard E. Grant as the head of the vampire family. He brought a non-threatening, yet nerve wracking (well, for kids, anyway) presence to the movie. His charming powers over Mrs. Thompson were hysterical, and the entire cast did very well with this movie.
One for the kids that mom and dad will enjoy sitting through, which is a rarity anymore, except for the likes of Shrek.
Oh, and I can't omit Rollo Weeks, as The Little Vampire himself. He was so charming, so perfectly nailed the role of Rudolph. As well as the role for arguably the cutest kid in movies, Jonathan Lipnicki, as Tony Thompson. The crush Anna had on him was acted out adorably by Anna Popplewell, as well. There was just great acting all around in The Little Vampire.
A job well done by all involved. Entertaining, campy, scary enough for the little ones without freaking them out even slightly, and still entertaining for the adults.

Barbie Fairytopia - Magic of the Rainbow Review

(More customer reviews)My 4 year old has loved the Barbie Movies since she was 2 and this one, the third installment in the Fairytopia series did not dissapoint. I personally prefer the ones based on fairytales (Princess and the Pauper, Nutcracker, and Twevle Dancing Princesses) but I thought that this was the best movie of the Fairytopia series. The anamation is awesome. We saw this movie on Nickelodeon and recorded on our DVR. We have watched it at least once everyday since, great movie!

Shark Tale (Widescreen Edition) (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Oscar (Smith) the fish leads a normal life. He is just an average guy working at the Whale Wash. One day, he wanders into shark territory and is chased by Frankie. Unfortunately for Frankie, the chase ends in his death, not at Oscar's hands, but by pure accident. Oscar sees as an opportunity to "be someone", and quickly takes the credit. The fish world begins to call him the "Shark Slayer", two female fish begin to show their interest, and the shark godfather (DeNiro) makes it his business to find the murderer of Frankie...his son.
"Shark Tale" is yet another animated movie that will appeal to both children and adults. The difference is, this time it almost seems made for adults first and kids second. The most obvious references are to "The Godfather" and "Goodfellas", two movies that no kids should have seen. Also, advertising placement has run amok in this movie. Every way you turn in the city, there are obvious "fake ads" for real products that is very distracting. Most everything in this movie is overkill, in fact.
The voice talents are credible and the animation is good, although I found Oscar to look kind of creepy with his near human-looking face. "Shark Tale" also is nothing like "Finding Nemo", which is both good and bad. Good, because it is not retreading material that is not too old yet. Bad, because "Finding Nemo" was so much better. "Shark Tale" is a decent movie that will be enjoyed by most, and I did laugh a number of times while viewing it, but my advice is to wait for DVD.

The Rugrats Movie (1998) Review

(More customer reviews)As I write this review I can't help but remember when I loved the Rugrats. It was once my favorite show in television as a kid. And when the movie came out in theaters I was more excited than anyone would've imagined. I was a huge fan. The TV show has decreased in quality, but the movie still remains solid. It introduced a new character to the series, and to this day still remains the greatest adventure that the rugrats have gone on.
Didi has recently found out she's pregnant, and that means Tommy is getting a baby brother. When Tommy's new brother Dil is born, things around the house change. Dil begins to receive a bit more attention than Tommy, and he's always loud and obnoxious... the way Tommy used to be when he was first born. Phil, Lil, and Chuckie can't stand him and neither can Angelica.
In the meantime, Stewie has made a new invention. A Reptar mobile (Reptar is the Rugrats version of "Godzilla" and the babies' hero). When Stu and Didi head out for a while, they leave the kids home alone with Grandpa. If you've watched the show you know Grandpa is not a good baby sitter... he always falls asleep, and that's what he does here.
The babies see this Reptar mobile and decide to hop inside and play around. Angelica (the rambuncious three year old brat) is trying to watch her show and so she is very annoyed. She gives the babies the boot (literally) and the Reptar wagon suddenly slides out the front door. Tommy has little idea how to control it, and neither do his friends. Phil and Lil, however, don't see it as such a bad thing. To them it's a chance to take new-born baby Dil back to the hospital.
With the babies gone, Angelica can finally find peace... except there's a problem. When she gave the babies the boot they took her favorite doll Cynthia with them! Now Angelica decides she must find them, and so she saddles up the family dog, Spike. And Spike ends up running out the front door... dragging Angelica along.
The result? The babies getting lost in the forest far away from home. When the parents find out, they go on a large search for the babies.
I suppose what got me to really like this movie was the adventure of it. The little imagination of these babies is amazing! The movie even begins with a little rendition of "Indiana Jones" as they're actually exploring thier house. But when they really AREN'T in a place that's their home, you can see just how brave they get.
Never mind how stupid the parents are (they NEVER learn from leaving the babies with Grandpa), the adventure is exciting. Especially when Phil and Lil manage to let a bunch of monkey's take Dil away. Soon Tommy really IS the one responsible for his brother. The movie is funny in many places, and it's songs are enlightening. Any child will enjoy this movie to death.
Unlike it's sequel, the babies get into some trouble that isn't too far beyond their control. By that I mean, the Reptar mobile is just a wagon, and not some HUGE GIGANTIC THING DESTROYING THE CITY! This adventure is more REAL than in the sequel, "Rugrats in Paris".
And while Dil isn't the most likeable character, it's unrealistic to think he can do as much as the other babies can (he can't walk, mind you). It would help if Dil was as adventureous as his brother, but considering he's only a few weeks old, we can get by.
The animation is top notch, and very vivid and vibrant. Much better than the television show ever was. It's just incredible.
If there were problems I'd say it's this: It is certainly not a movie for grown ups. If you grew up with the Rugrats as I did, you will probably like this movie. However, grown ups who didn't grow up with the Rugrats, will be annoyed by their kids loving to watch the film. It is clearly aimed at the younger audience.
It's a great movie. Especially for your kids, and especially for nostalgia. This was an incredible movie eight years ago, and remains a good movie for your kids today.

(More customer reviews)Here we have a non-Disney movie that ranks right up there with some of the really great animated flicks. Jimmy Stewart and Dom DeLuise are no longer with us, unfortunately. Their characters are great. Linda Ronstadt's singing is superb. You do not watch this movie for the plot. Just enjoy the super characters with wonderful voiceovers.
I never saw the first or the third installment of the Fievel series, and I'm sure they are great too. I had this on video tape and have been waiting for DVD for years. My daughter loved it, but she didn't KNOW the characters like I did. If I remember correctly, Spielberg was involved in this film, which makes perfect sense why it was done so well.
It is not a Pixar magic cartoon, but it is just as enjoyable as any Pixar movie ever made, and I have all of those too. If you aren't a happy person, don't watch it, because you won't get the point of it. Try it, you might just really like it.

Caillou - Caillou, The Everyday Hero (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)There's a lot to praise about the Caillou series, but three things stand out especially in my mind. First: having myself three kids in or slightly past the age of Caillou (4) and his sister (2), I must say I have never seen video-stories so sensitive and accurate in portraying the mental world of the two age levels. The author is reported to be a children's psychology specialist, and it certainly shows.
The second point is related: the stories unfold in a wonderfully gentle, serene, every-day manner. They're in total contrast to the prevalent action-packed, slightly hysterical type of children's movies, yet somehow they're very powerful in drawing the audience into the little joys and pains of a kid's life.
Finally, though perhaps less uniquely: Mum and Dad are depicted in a refreshingly modern, realistic way which does more than just break the dualist Dad-as-career-hero, Mum-as-saintly-guardian stereotype. It shows them as people who sometimes want to have fun on their own, and who call in a nanny for the kids when they throw a party.

(More customer reviews)Tom and Jerry's second DVD collection of classic cartoons has been butchered, like the first one. "Mucho Mouse" is shown in a pan-and-scan format, where no less than 40% of the picture is chopped off of the sides. Tom and Jerry should be shown in their original format. I don't care about the "black bars," I want to see the full picture, and that is not what I see on this DVD. I wouldn't recommend this DVD even at a bargain price. Don't support censorship and avoid this DVD!

Air Buddies (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)If I could split my review, I would give it three stars from an adult's perspective but--based on the reactions of my sons (9 & 11 years old)--five from a kid's. And I don't think it's just because we own a golden puppy.
Unlike the previous movies, the dogs talk in this one. A couple of the puppies are really annoying when they talk (and will sound incredibly dated in about ... well, now), but the new conceit works pretty well for freshing up the series.
The best part of the movie, though, was the pleasant surprise of hearing Don Knotts' voice one more time. He voices a (what else) deputy dog and it's like getting to listen to Barney all over again. Half expected him to call someone "Ange"!
Buy it for the kids, listen to it for the Knotts!
