(More customer reviews)I was "berry" lucky to be able to see an advance screening of this DVD at the second Strawberry Shortcake Convention in Cleveland. It was an unfinished copy, missing a lot of the sound effects that will be present in the final copy. However, it gave us a look at the new title sequence, as well as a taste of the new format for these DVDs. They are now going to be divided into two 22-minute episodes, instead of one longer one.
This is, in my opinion, the best of all the Strawberry Shortcake DVDs to date. The stories are cute and entertaining, and the shorter episode format keeps the attention span a little better. The first episode, while not entierly consistent with the first four DVDs, explains how Strawberry gets Pupcake. The second is a story very obviously inspired by the 1980s Pets On Parade Strawberry Shortcake cartoon. (In fact, the same person from American Greetings worked on both stories, another tidbit learned at the Convention.) This one is great not only because it features the cartoon debuts of all the pets belonging to Strawberry's friends (including Apple Ducklin' and Shoofly Frog, who have yet to appear in toy form) but it introduces a brand new character, Peppermint Fizz, and her pet lizard Cola Chameleon.
In the context in which I saw this cartoon, I was able to get the reactions of both intended audiences - children and collectors. The children loved it; they sang along with the theme song and their eyes stayed firmly fixed on the screen. As for the collectors, it's quite fun to hear gasps of joy from grown people when their favourite pet appears onscreen for the first time. ;-)
If Strawberry Shortcake appeals to you or your children, this DVD will definitely NOT disappoint.

Strawberry Shortcake - The Sweet Dreams Movie (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)"The Sweet Dreams Movie" is the first ever CGI film for the "Strawberry Shortcake" series. It was shown in limited release in theatres and is now available on DVD.Positives:
- To me, the CGI animation really isn't bad. Though I was thrown off by the look of it at first, I quickly grew used to it. I found some of it to actually be rather nice-looking. I also thought that the characters looked for the most part like they do in the TV show. Certainly a better effort to me than the CGI for "Clifford's Really Big Movie" (mediocre) and "Arthur's Missing Pal." (Not good at all.)
- Music and songs --- the best highlight of the film. "How a Garden Grows" is a fast-paced, standout song and very catchy. A couple of other fun songs include "All it Takes" and "The Land of Dreams." The songs overall are berry nice and drive the plot along.
- Characters - This film introduces a number of new characters to the series. Doing this sort of thing is always a bit of a tightrope, but I think all of the new characters work fairly well here. Raspberry Torte, works well as a reluctant protagonist (looking out for Lemon Meringue) and even though the series doesn't necessarily need villains to make it interesting, Purple Pie Man and his sister Sour Grapes fill the role well enough.
- Story - A decent enough plotline, though a bit slow-starting. The Land of Dreams was a fun place to visit and I wouldn't mind seeing it in the series again.Negatives:
- No special features other than Spanish subtitles and previews for other releases on this DVD. Most of the other "Strawberry Shortcake" DVDs at least have a music video and other such direct-to-video (or near direct-to-video) DVD releases have managed to put together at least reasonably interesting special features, so there's no reason why this shouldn't have any.
- Strawberry Shortcake's sister Apple Dumplin' is once again absent-without-leave, a disappointment, as she is one of the best characters in the series. Huckleberry Pie and Blueberry Muffin are also nowhere to be found.This film, per the closing credits, was dedicated with love to Pam Carter, who served as a voice director for the series.

(More customer reviews)This was apparently the final episode/movie they released before they changed strawberry shortcake to itty bitty whatever. We LOVE these versions of SS. They are fantastic. Strawberry and her friends have such cute looks and voices. They sing alot and are just fun for even me to watch. I highly recommend on stocking up on this "older" version of Strawberry Shortcake before you cannot buy them anymore. The new itty bitty version stinks! She is tiny, has an annoying, unfriendly voice, doesn't sing anymore, just not what we grew up with at all.
Change her back, please, change her back to this version! :(
This movie is 2 different short stories in one. Both are fun and have good life lessons, just as all SS movies do!

(More customer reviews)I must admit I'm a big fan of the former version of Strawberry Shortcake and was very leary when I heard they were re-inventing her. But I tried very hard to go into watching this movie with an open mind hoping I would be proven wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn't. Even if you can adjust to the new look (which isn't all that bad and not quite as grown up as I was thinking it would be), the storyline and characters are unimaginative and boring. You definitely don't get the feeling each girl is her own unique individual with quirks and character like the former Strawberry Shortcake gang was. My huge Strawberry Shortcake fan who is almost 4 years old, quit watching the movie mid way through. She was bored. I fell asleep. Missing are classic characters such as Honey Pie Pony, Ginger Snap, Angel Cake, and Huckleberry Pie to name a few. There's odd caterpillar and berrykin characters who just add a strange element to the whole mess. And then there's the uninspired world in which they live. Instead of imaginative places like Ice Cream Island, Cake Walk, the River Fudge, and Cookie Corners, you get a very unimaginative world that looks too much like reality . . . just a bunch of rocks and bushes. And Strawberry and her pals are miniature now . . . living down under the bushes. So to sum it up, don't waste your money or time on this particular movie. And if the first movie is any indication of what's to come, my daughter and I will be sticking with our collection of past Strawberry Shortcake DVDs.
