The Girls Next Door - Season 3 (2005) Review

The Girls Next Door - Season 3 (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's about time to review the dvd's now that they have come out.
I've been a fan of the girls next door for quite some time now and I must say that the fans of this show are getting luckier and luckier.
Not only are the girls gorgeous, the lifestyle to die for and the entertainment non stop but it doesn't seem to ever get old, the first season was awesome, the second more so and the third even better. (Though I must say it does have my least favorite episode of all times in it, the other episodes make up for it.)
The DVD's contain all aired episodes of the third season, with deleted scenes attached to all episodes (something I love to watch, it just gives you a little something extra from the girls lives.) and the best part in my view, commentary by Holly Bridget and Kendra on all episodes which is, like many have said before, like twice the episode and adding to the episodes over-all quality.
Other special features include the hour long "Bedtime stories" special where the girls all sat down in Hef's bed an discussed their favorite moments from the first two seasons, the season 3 trailer which aired on E! when the season first started in march 2007 and a few Easter eggs on disks 1 and 3.
It's not an overstatement when I say that Holly Bridget and Kendra changed my life and to me the Girls next door is the gift that keeps on giving with entertaining episodes but more importantly endearing characters of 3 lovely ladies who know how to live life to the fullest...
You go girls!

Barbie Movie Collection Review

Barbie Movie Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has the first four Barbie movies in one, they are Nutcracker, Rapunzel, Swan Lake, and the best one ever - The Princess and the Pauper. It is a good mix of Barbie singing and dancing. The quality of the animation and the storys get better as they go on with the Princess and the pauper songs etc the best. There is some great humour in that one too which the kids really enjoy.
Hours of fun in here which will keep your little girl occupied. Also nice dancing in the first two (Nutcracker and Swan Lake). What I like about these movies is Barbie is very capable, she is intelligent and tries to help others. I know it probably sounds trite, but I like the fact that the movies teach good ethics to kids, about being part of a community, and respecting others.

Yu-Gi-Oh - The Complete First Season (2001) Review

Yu-Gi-Oh - The Complete First Season (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As you might have gleaned from other reviews on this page, there are in fact two completely different products that present the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh:
1) Yu-Gi-Oh: The Complete First Season (henceforth called TCFS)
2) Yu-Gi-Oh: The Perfect Collection (henceforth called TPC)
What's the difference? Well, several things.
1) TCFS is listed on Amazon, TPC is not.
2) TPC is the original, uncut episodes, dubbed by a foreign distributor. TCFS is an edited set, put out by 4Kids Entertainment in the US, with some violence and language removed, and also has different voices than TPC's dub. You can see several reviews here complaining about the scenes cut out in TCFS. The reason why this was done is that TCFS is a Kid's version, TPC is the original adult version.
3) Most importantly, TCFS, for one reason or another, retails for about $40 more than TPC.
Now, most people would normally love to have uncut episodes of a show over cut ones. And if the uncut episodes are less expensive, it should be a no-brainer. UNLESS you're buying it for a Kid. If you're buying for a kid, you may want, and be willing to pay more for an edited version. And in any case, the kid is going to want the version that has the voices that he's heard on TV. He's not going to get why everybody sounds different.
Whichever version you want, these are the facts. There *are* two different versions, they are not quite the same, and their prices are very different. And this is where the potential for abuse comes in.
(...)
If you should see an ad like that, and be thinking about buying, check the fine print first, and look to see if it contains the words "International Version". If it has those words, then the seller is going to substitute TPC for TCFS, (despite the fact that TCFS is the product being listed), and try to claim that they're really the same thing (despite having different titles). What is a fantastic price for TCFS is not all that great a price for TPC. You could do better elsewhere. But be that as it may, just be aware, that if you place such an order for TCFS, TPC is what you're going to get. If that's what you wanted, fine. But if you deliberately ordered the Kid's version because you WANTED the kid's version, be aware that you're not going to get it, despite what it says on your receipt.

I really enjoy this series. The entire cast is excellent and complements each other. This is one of the few series I look forward to, both new and reruns.
This first release of That 70s show on DVD contains all of the episodes of its first season. All 25 episodes are contained on 4 disks. It is full frame and list at 575 minutes.
Episodes:
-----------

6) The Keg - Eric and Donna skip a day of school and find Hyde and Fes in the back seat of the car. While driving down the road they find a keg of beer.
7) That Disco Episode - Kitty teaches Hyde how to dance.
8) Drive In - Eric and Donna go to the drive-in.
9) Thanksgiving - Laurie comes home for Thanksgiving.
10) Sunday, Bloody Sunday - Red's mother comes for a Sunday visit and drives everyone crazy, except for Fes.
11) Eric's Buddy - Eric has a new friend and Kelso and Hyde can't stand it.
12) The Best Christmas Ever - Red give Eric $40 to get a tree but he keeps the money and cuts down a tree from beside the road.

Rocky: The Complete Saga (1990) Review

Rocky: The Complete Saga (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The stars which are used to rate this product are for the technical specs of the product itself, not a rating on the merits of the films. I am a huge Rocky fan, so the films would get five stars, no matter how they were packaged. Ok, now that I've cleared that up:
From The Digital Bits news today: "In other release news, MGM has just set a Rocky: The Complete Saga DVD box set for release on 12/4 (SRP $59.98). The set will include Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V and yes... the recent Rocky Balboa. Unfortunately, according to the studio's press release, the only extras on the set are a pair of trailers (one for Rocky and one for Rocky V). Yo, Adrian! Where's the beef?" If that is true--and it probably is since The Digital Bits is the most reliable site for DVD news--why bother releasing this set?
Here's the DVD history of Rocky: MGM originally released individual standard DVDs of the Rocky movies many years ago as the DVD format became more popular. The DVDs were, to put it charitably, poorly produced. Subsequently, MGM released a Rocky I-V box set back in 2001 to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Rocky. Although the packaging was nice, there wasn't much improvement to the DVDs themselves as far as audio and video transfers; the most significant detail of the set was the addition of interviews and other special features to the first Rocky disc. A few years later, the set was re-released with different packaging, with some improved audio and video transfers on some of the movies (Rocky V was notably left untouched). And last year, to coincide with the release of Rocky Balboa, the set was re-released again, this time with the cheap, thin DVD cases now being used in tv season DVD packages as the only difference from the previous release. Inexplicably, rather than being included in the re-re-released box set, the first Rocky movie was also separately re-released on DVD in a 2 disc 30th Anniversary special edition (Well, I guess greed would explain it...). So, if you bought any of the box sets, you still had to purchase the 30th Anniversary edition of Rocky to be a true completist.
With Rocky Balboa having been available on DVD for over six months, MGM has now chosen to release the complete set of films in a new box set. But what a missed opportunity this represents to include special features which have been omitted from previous releases. I do not know if there are cut scenes from Rocky IV in the MGM vaults, but I know for a fact that there is massive material for Rocky V, as a bootleg "uncut" version of the film has been circulating online for years. Also, why not finally upgrade the video transfer of Rocky V? Perhaps the most egregious omission will be special features for Rocky Balboa. Listening to Stallone's commentary on the DVD, he repeatedly refers to a "director's cut" which he would like to release at some point. This would have been the perfect time.

The Invaders - The First Season Review

The Invaders - The First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I was a kid, this show truly terrified me and DID give me nightmares - but I loved it anyway! Now, at long last, the original, iconic Sci-Fi TV Classic "The Invaders" is being released on DVD in boxed season sets. The first 17 episodes have been gathered in the initial DVD release.
The Invaders, which premiered on ABC in 1967, starred Roy Thinnes. It was a mid-season replacement show that was an hour-long, full-color science fiction thriller that sadly lasted only 43 episodes. Families across the country truly gathered around their TV sets when the series aired on Tuesday's at 8:30 p.m. to see what happened next.
The show opened with an unforgettable and chilling narration: "The Invaders, a Quinn Martin Production starring Roy Thinnes as architect David Vincent. The Invaders - alien beings from a dying planet. Their destination - the Earth. Their purpose: to make it `their' world. David Vincent has seen them. For him, it began one lost night on a lonely country road, looking for a shortcut that he never found. It began with a closed, deserted diner, and a man too long without sleep to continue his journey. It began with the landing of a craft from another galaxy. Now, David Vincent knows that the Invaders are here; that they have taken human form. Somehow, he must convince a disbelieving world, that the nightmare has already begun..."
Voice talents were Hank Simms, who was the introductory narrator, and William Woodson who was episode narrator for the entire series.
In the first episode, Vincent is driving home at night after working a long, tiring day. He turns onto what he believes is a shortcut, then down the dark, isolated road. Unexpectedly, he ends up at Bud's Cafe, situated in a ghost town. Exhausted, he decides to park to rest for a while before continuing home. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, something wakes him: a strange glowing object is "landing" in front of his eyes.
Leaving his car and edging forward, he sees the advance army of what he learns is an alien invasion. From that moment forward, he tries to warn a skeptical world that there are aliens in their midst masquerading as humans. At the same time, he struggles to stay alive - because not only had he seen the aliens, but they had seen him!
While the premise seems simple in this day and age, the series had such great production values, flawless acting by Thinnes, fantastically creepy music by Dominic Frontiere, use of creative and intentionally distorted camera work, and even weird title credits by Wayne Fitzgerald, that it really did scare the wits out of legions of fans. In addition, the true form of the Invaders was never shown, so viewers' imaginations were encouraged to run wild, an effective creative device that has been sadly abandoned in this "show everything no matter what" Internet age.
As the series progressed, Vincent was able to identify some Invaders through certain characteristics, and he also learned that their human forms were unstable and had to be "regenerated" occasionally, or they would perish.
In 1995, there was a feeble attempt to resurrect the show in a mini-series starring Scott Bakula as Nolan Wood, with an appearance by Thinnes.
"The Invaders" remains so popular that in 2004 the character of David Vincent was ranked No. 6 in TV Guide's list of the Twenty-Five Greatest Sci-Fi Legends.
It may not be coincidental that The Invaders seems an intriguing mix of the Sci-Fi film masterpiece "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and the TV Classic drama "The Fugitive," which was also produced by the brilliant Quinn Martin, who also produced The Untouchables, and The Streets of San Francisco, to name a few.
Episodes included in this boxed set are: Beachhead; The Experiment; The Mutation; The Leeches; Genesis; Vikor; Nightmare; Doomsday Minus One; Quantity: Unknown; The Innocent; The Ivy Curtain; The Betrayed; Storm; Panic; Moonshot; Wall of Crystal; The Condemned.
Let's hope the remainder of this fantastic series will be quickly released on DVD.

The Amityville Horror Collection is a nice little DVD box set. You get 3 movies: The Amityville Horror / Amityville II: The Possession / Amityville 3-D, and a Bonus Disc - Amityville Confidential. Now nothing can compare to the original Amityville Horror as the newer ones got a bit out of hand. Im here to focus more on the DVD collection rather than the movies. This Collection will truly be appreciated by fans of the Amityville movies. You get a lot of great stuff with this collection. First you get a choice of either a High Definition, 16x9 Widescreen version of the film or a regular Full screen version. You also get great 5.1 Dolby Digital sound that brings new life to these films along with a choice of a regular mono track. The movies also include subtitle options in English, Spanish, and French. The amazing clarity makes the movies look like they just came out yesterday. These are HUGE improvements when compared to the old VHS versions of these films. Some of the other extras on this collection are: Audio Commentary by Dr. Hans Holzer, Ph.D. in parapsychology, "For God's Sake, Get Out" documentary, Radio spots, and the Original theatrical trailers. You get to see the theatrical trailer for THE AMITYVILLE 2005 remake which (in the bonus disc) they say the new movie is more based on the book than the original movie, and with the technology now days they can do more things from the book that they cound not do in the original film. You even get a free movie ticket to see The Amityville Horror (2005) staring Ryan Reynolds. Last but not least you get an awesome BONUS DISC called The Amityville Confidential. On the Bonus disc you get 3 great features:
1. On Location: A short little behind the scenes making of The NEW Amityville Horror (2005 Remake) which is released in the U.S. Apil 15, 2005.
2. The History Channel documentary Amityville: Horror or Hoax?
3. The History Channel documentary Amityville: The Haunting
What can I say this is a great DVD Collection with some great stuff. I encourage anyone who appreciates these movies to get this great collection. This is well worth the money for all that you get!

The Ultimate Matrix Collection (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions/ The Animatrix) (2003) Review

The Ultimate Matrix Collection (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions/ The Animatrix) (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
During the following I will intend to describe as best and briefly as possible this collection. I also will mention some differences between this collection and the original releases. Enjoy.
The difference between the limited and the unlimited editions are: The Limited Edition comes in a plastic box with trays, a Neo bust and an 80 page booklet that lists the extras of the 10 disks (yes, that's all it does). Besides this the sets are the same.
These two sets include all three films, The Animatrix, the film footage shot for Enter the Matrix videogame and 106 documentaries. The bonus disks for Reloaded and Revolutions are different from those included in the versions already released.
REMASTERD: The movies were enhanced so the films look brighter in color and richer in details. Don't worry it was not done by Gorge Lucas. The films are the same.
AUDIO: Also enhanced (not that it was necessary). Voices are stronger, gentle noises stand out more and details were sweetened just a bit. Great work!
DISK 1: The Matrix. The original commentaries, the music only audio track, follow the white rabbit, take the red pills... ALL ARE MISSING in this version. It comes with two commentaries worth listening to, a written intro from the Wachowski bros., and a ROM feature.
DISK 2: The Matrix Revisited. It includes the entire contents of the original disk except the fanboy stuff.
DISK 3: The Matrix Reloaded. Two new commentaries and a ROM feature.
DISK 4: The Matrix Reloaded Revisited. All new stuff such as a 17-min look at the fight in the Merovingian's chateau, 55-min dissection of the car chase, 40-min look at the Neo vs. 100 Smith battle, 7-min segment on Neo vs. Seraph and more.
DISK 5: The Matrix Revolutions. Two new commentaries and a ROM feature.
DISK 6: The Matrix Revolutions Revisited. Includes a tour of the set, 27-min piece on the Club Hel fight (ceiling walkers), segments on the workers and extras, 17-min profile of Neo vs. Smith final battle, 36-min piece covering the soundtrack, film editing, etc. and more.
DISK 7: The Animatrix. Just as we all remember it.
DISK 8: The Roots of the Matrix. Two documentaries: 1-Return to Source: The Philosophy of The Matrix: is an hour long discussion on the philosophical elements of the movie. And 2-The Hard Problem: the Science Behind the Fiction is an hour long discussion of the science of the films and its possibilities for a real life Matrix.
DISK 9: The Burly Man Chronicles. This is a 94-min featurette documenting the whole 276 day shoot for films 2 and 3. Profiles, interviews, a tribute to Alliyah and more are also found on this disk. Although almost nothing is said about Gloria Foster (the original Oracle).
DISK 10: The Zion Archive. Here we find storyboards and concept art for all three films; trailers and music videos for all three films; video effects in various states of completion and a Matrix Online game preview.
Overall: Excellent collection and a must for fans. If you are not a hardcore fan though and you like this collection, you may want to purchase the one without Neo's bust. It's cheaper and the booklet is only a guide to the extras on the 10 disks which are all included in both sets. The Wachowskis DO NOT give any commentaries on these disks which may be disappointing for some fans. But over all this is a great collection. You may add it to the ones you already own with confidence. There are more goodies in these disks not mentioned here so have fun exploring. Just follow the white rabbit and remember... there is no spoon.

Sonic Underground: The Series (1999) Review

Sonic Underground: The Series (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a high quality series, a real value for your money. The Sonic Underground is a great TV series and I have been hoping that they would release more Sonic Underground episodes in Region 1.
If you want a Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon that is follows the same story line as the video games, this series is not for you. If you are looking for a classic Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon with a bit of a twist, I highly recommend this series.
Sonic Underground has a good story line, great characters, and good morals (which is not the case with most of the cartoons these days).Sonia's voice could use improvement, but after you listen for a little while you get used to it.
As for the music, there is one song in every episode. Some adults may not like the songs, but the episodes are geared towards children and most children love the songs. They have a catchy beat, have good morals and are fun!

It is obvious that the creators of Sonic Underground put much effort and time into the detailed artwork and story line of the show. The story line is different than the games, but it is a good story line nonetheless.
There are other episodes that hopefully will be released if there is enough demand for this series. I hope that you will consider buying it so that they will complete the Sonic Underground DVD collection and other Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series collections.
At this time, Amazon does not list the contents of the DVD set.

Friday the 13th - From Crystal Lake to Manhattan (Ultimate Edition DVD Collection) (1984) Review

Friday the 13th - From Crystal Lake to Manhattan (Ultimate Edition DVD Collection) (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Paramount truly are quite shameful, lazy, and contemptable. Everything about this 'Ultimate' release screams "cheap-a$$" quite loudly. And here's why.
I think it is forgiveable that Paramount didn't see fit to release these movies in their uncut forms. It would lose them money in some circles if this boxset were to not be stocked in Blockbuster. So for this release, uncut death scenes have been prepared.
Here are the catches, and they are quite significant: 1) gore footage for the original Friday the 13th and Part 6 are presented in horizontal SPLIT SCREENS alongside the R-rated versions. That's right, Jason fans- it's squeezed into only HALF the screen space. That's 2 out of 3 movies. 2) The gore footage from Part 7 looks quite bad, in a very rough made-for-video way in which the age shows a lot of wear and tear. There's bonus footage here as well from Part 4, but it's made-for-tv deleted scenes that don't include any gore.
Also, remember when Paramount put out the first Friday on DVD? You could finally see Annie's throat-slitting in it's entirety. Well, Paramount's decided to cut that back out. So that means if you ever want to see it again, you have to buy the original on DVD separately. Which I'll be doing, you can bet.
Here are some other things you might like to know. The set contains 4 discs of movies. Each disc has 2 movies on each disc side. I'm sorry, but my DVD players freeze erratically whenever a disc has more than 3 hours and 10 minutes of stuff on them. 20th Century Fox released The Family Guy TV seasons in these very slim single cases- why didn't Paramount have this brainstorm too?! That way, we could get 1 movie a disc, like we deserve. At least that would show Paramount thought about someone else.
The 1 Bonus Disc contains a few truly bogus featurettes. Paramount didn't even get half the cast members that would have been willing to do interviews and commentaries. They just had some people go off to a convention 1 year and get a mere handful of people there on camera. They neglected to put effort into contacting actresses Kimberly Beck and Melanie Kinnamon, who have been very outspoken about their enthusiasm onset and their appreciation for the series fans. Also, director Steve Miner is absent from participation on the featurettes or commentaries. Yet he's been on bonus features for the House, Halloween H20, and Last House on the Left DVDs. So sorry, I don't buy that he didn't want to participate here.
The only real work Paramount did here was on the commentaries. The commentaries for only 4 movies. The directors of Friday the 13th's 6, 7, and 8 do commentaries. Jason actor Kane Hodder joins the director on Part 7, and the cast of Part 3 do a commentary. But there's yet another catch! These commentaries - at least the one I heard for Part 3, have the worst sound quality I've heard from a big studio commentary since John Waters track for the Cecil B Demented DVD. And even that was less TIN-can sounding than this.
This boxset is the biggest insult to fans of this series. And even at $57, this is overpriced. I urge everyone here to pay attention to the rumors I'm hearing about future re-re-releasing of these movies on yet another boxset or individual uncut releases. At the very least people, don't buy this until you hear it's about to go out of print. The Star Wars boxset is worth more than this.

Michael Jackson's Vision (2010) Review

Michael Jackson's Vision (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No one can dispute Michael Jackson's dominance over pop music and his far reaching influence; music, dance, fashion, video, humanitarianism, generosity -- he was at the forefront of it all and remains unmatched. Like any true legend, even in death, MJ continues to be a force of creativity and inspiration to millions. And now, finally, his revolutionary short films are available for all to own and enjoy on DVD, and I for one, am thrilled!
I've been looking forward to this DVD box set ever since Michael died. It doesn't take a genius or clairvoyant to know we're in store for many wonderful projects to come, headlining the King of Pop. Some call this opportunistic; bleeding MJ fans for money. But I don't see it that way -- the estates and legacies of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, etc. continue to live on with various merchandising deals, and so too, will MJ. He has MORE than earned his place in history, and I for one, look forward to all that's yet to come. In the meantime, I scoured the internet for rare gems like "Ghosts" and the controversial prison version of the video "They Don't Care About Us." But the quality of the unofficial footage out there is pretty terrible, so I'm really excited to finally own all these great masterpieces, fully restored and re-mastered to look and sound better than ever before! With over 40 videos totaling 4.5 hours of wall to wall MJ, and 10 previously unreleased short films, this is the one and only, truly definitive MJ collection on DVD to date.
I only hope that someday, they also release this on a USB flash drive, like they did for THIS IS IT (USB). I have that one on both Blu-Ray and USB (which I transferred to my hard drive) and I really enjoy having the video file on my computer for fast and easy access. If I want to sit and watch the whole movie, I pop in the Blu-Ray; if I just want to watch a particular moment or song on impulse, then I simply click on the video file on my computer and instantly go to the song I want. It's really awesome to be able to do that, so I hope they release something similar for Michael Jackson's Vision on USB. I would love to have the same instant access to all MJ's videos just sitting there on my computer hard drive! Who needs DVDs; they're so yesterday! But they are ideal for archiving, which is exactly what makes this DVD so special. I consider owning this treasured collection to be the same as possessing personal mementos and photos of my own life; both are part of my past and conjure fond memories, yet remain as real and alive today as when I first experienced them.
Speaking of archives, it's worth mentioning that Michael's "Thriller" short film is the one and only music video to ever be inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress; an honor bestowed on only a handful of films to date, and MJ is the only musician to receive such an honor.
Along with all the great videos, both classic and unreleased, this box set comes with a 60 page glossy collector's book featuring the King of Pop; adding yet another treasure to enjoy along with the DVDs themselves. This is truly, a one of a kind box set that any fan will be proud to own. And it's a fitting tribute to such a rare and special man.

Total Disc 3: 35minThat's quite a collection of short films! The only one really missing is Disney's Captain EO! Which BTW, had the help of none other than George Lucas. No other artist in history has worked with so many top A-List people in their videos. Only Michael could reach such a wide spectrum, break down all barriers and make something like that happen. The man remains a rare and special anomaly. Bravo Michael! Bottom Line -- if you're a fan of Michael Jackson, then you can't go wrong with this beautiful DVD box set. And it's even reasonably priced, considering who it is and all that's on here! I know this is something I'll treasure forever. The words "special" and "genius" are bandied about far too freely, but in this instance, the man truly lives up to the meaning of those words, and then some! Thank you Michael, for all you have given, and continue to give us all.
MJ Forever!

It might have been fate that MTV was born at the same time people began to notice the rare talent and artistic ingenuity of Michael Jackson. It proved to be a perfect match between the new television network and the young rising icon.Early on, Michael saw MTV’s potential as a force of its own and understood that it offered him the chance to pioneer a whole new visual style through which people could see music, not just listen to it.For the first time, artists had the opportunity to truly shape a vision of a story around their songs. For Michael, this meant treating the song as a “script" and creating a stand-alone film to tell that story. In fact, Michael referred to each of these productions as a "short film" and not a “music video." No other artist contributed more to the development of this art form than Michael Jackson. Just look at the impact of Thriller, which was recently named the first (and only) music video ever to be inducted by the Library of Congress into the National Film Registry - an elite collection of only a few hundred films. In addition to this, Michael’s vision had immense cultural impact .The enormous popularity of his short films proved toMTV Executives that they were wrong about what their audience wanted; it was Michael who broke through that initial barrier and created opportunity for future African American artists. Here, for the first time, is the complete collection of all 35 of the short films produced by Michael during his career as a solo artist - 10 of which are appearing on DVD for the first time. All of the short films have been meticulously restored and remastered for the ultimate audio and visual experience and a bonus DVD includes 7 additional videos including “Enjoy Yourself" with The Jacksons, “Say Say Say" with Paul McCartney and the Previously Unreleased video for “One More Chance". This is a true representation of Michael Jackson’s Vision.

The Arthur Dong Collection - Stories from the War on Homosexuality (Coming Out Under Fire / Licensed to Kill / Family Fundamentals) Review

The Arthur Dong Collection - Stories from the War on Homosexuality (Coming Out Under Fire / Licensed to Kill / Family Fundamentals)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Acclaimed USA documentary film maker Arthur Dong has released his first DVD project - a 3 disc boxed collection under the significant title "Stories from the War on Homo Sexuality", comprising three feature length films "Coming Out Under Fire" (1994), "Licensed To Kill" (1997) and "Family Fundamentals" (2002). All are digitally remastered and include added features, extended scenes, music selections and detailed liner notes. The films deal respectively with: gays and lesbians who served in World War 2; the convicted killers of gay men; and families in which openly gay and lesbian children have parents who campaign actively against homosexuality.
"Stories from the War on Homosexuality" is a highly accessible, powerful and empowering resource for anyone working toward social reform and LGBT acceptance. Great value lies not only in the high quality of craftsmanship, but also in the entertaining and compelling presentation and the respect and compassion with which Arthur treats all of his contributors.
"Stories from the War on Homosexuality" gives us a detailed perspective on the experiential gap between how we view ourselves and how others may see us. Young people need to know that homosexuals do have an ongoing and integral role in society...and older persons need to know that we can't afford to rest on our laurels.

The Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly Collection (On the Town / Anchors Aweigh / Take Me out to the Ball Game) Review

The Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly Collection (On the Town / Anchors Aweigh / Take Me out to the Ball Game)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All three of these DVDs have been released previously; however, this new boxed set houses a few new mildly interesting "extras" to be found in the Special Features. These three films are all big colorful MGM musicals, but none are in Widescreen because that particular aspect:ratio was not "invented" until 1954. However, they LOOK spectacular anyway!
"Anchors Aweigh" (1945) is a winning musical about two sailors on shore leave in search of a "dame". This musical's only flaw is it is a bit too long, as it has everything but the kitchen sink thrown in it, including a whole lot (too much) of Jose Iturbi, who must have been "quite something" in 1945 (but not now)! However, it is thoroughly entertaining for both adults and children, the latter, due to a lengthy sequence in the middle of the film that pairs live action (Gene Kelly dancing) with animation. Note, this was over 40 years BEFORE "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and 20 years before "Mary Poppins".
Both Sinatra and Kelly are excellent and Sinatra proves he can DANCE with the greatest of them! (4 1/2 out of 5 stars)
"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" (1949) is not quite as entertaining as "Anchors Aweigh". It less colorful and has a weaker plot, but the songs and dancing are still top-notch! This is the film where Sinatra REALLY proves he can DANCE as he and Kelly charge through a song in striped suits halfway through the film. Songs like "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", "Strictly USA", "The Right Girl For Me", and "O'Brien to Ryan to Goldberg" add to the fun of this film. (3 1/2 out of 5 stars)
"On the Town" (1949) Simply, one of the greatest musicals ever made! This was the FIRST musical in film history to be filmed ON LOCATION, and what a location: NEW YORK CITY CIRCA 1949! If the plot sounds familiar (THREE sailors on shore leave in search of a "dame"), the musical numbers and the thrill of the Big Apple send this one right OUT of the ballpark!
Co-starring Jules Munshin, Vera-Ellen, Betty Garrett, and Ann Miller, with some of the musical sequences composed by Leonard Bernstein, and the great theme song, "New York, New York" ("a helluva town, the Bronx is Up and the Battery Down...", not the Sinatra smash-hit song, which came way later - 1979), "On the Town" is everything a musical could and should be!
(5 out of 5 stars)
Overall rating for this DVD box set, due to the considerable strengths of "Anchors Aweigh" and "On the Town": 5 out of 5 stars!

THE FRANK SINATRA & GENE KELLY COLLECTION ON THE TOWN The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down, but no one can be down after seeing this ebullient tale of sailors on leave in Manhattan. Sinatra, Kelly and Jules Munchin are the gobs, Ann Miller, Vera-Ellen and Betty Garrett are the gals. TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME Second baseman Sinatra and shortstop Kelly are in there pitching – pitching woo! Esther Williams and Betty Garrett costar in a tale of baseball and that other American pastime. ANCHORS AWEIGH I Fall In Love Too Easily, Frank croons. And we fall in love with the charms of two sailors at liberty in Tinseltown. Includes a milestone of musical fantasy: Kelly’s dance with cartoon mouse Jerry!
