21 Jump Street - The Complete First Season (1987) Review

21 Jump Street - The Complete First Season (1987)
Average Reviews:

I was very excited that they released 21 Jump Street on DVD. It was a launching point for many careers and provided entertaining moral lessons. So I go to play the first show and within the first 15-20 minutes I notice something. They redid the music. Maybe it was just a couple of songs. Nope, it was pretty much all of them. And it was done in such a way that it was obnoxious and often detracted from the stories. I had a VERY hard time watching the remainder of the season because the the remastering was done so poorly.
21 Jump Street was that really cool hip show that had some of the latest music of the time. And whether it was record companies wanting to charge for using their music or someone deciding that the music needed to be less "dated" ... whatever the reason, they made a bad choice.
I highly recommend that people rent this DVD before they buy it to make sure they are okay with it. I am not and will not purchase any more seasons until they put the original music/soundtracks back in.
Later Gators!

Private Practice: The Complete First Season Review

Private Practice: The Complete First Season
Average Reviews:

I rather like "Private Practice". It's often implausible, but that's one of the features of escapist entertainment. The cast is talented and attractive. I'm looking forward to watching the new season. But I can't give this first DVD set a good review, because it just isn't a good value.
Due to the writers' strike, Season One of "Private Practice" only had 9 episodes. A normal season is 22 shows. But this collection's list price is the same as for a full season. The producers, having taken a major financial hit by not having as much advertising revenue as expected, are trying to recoup some of their costs from us by overpricing this set. I can't condone that.
I rate this collection 3-4 stars for quality, but only 0-1 stars for value. That gives a combined rating of 2 stars: disappointing.

Hetalia: Axis Powers - The Complete First Season Review

Hetalia: Axis Powers - The Complete First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been following the manga and anime since the series debuted in Japan. My biggest fear for the dubbing of "Hetalia" was that it would be stripped of everything not PC (which is literally the entire show). However, in the English version, the jokes are more offensive and the innuendo more rampant. The Japanese version skirted around any Nazi references, but the English version throws one in no more than a 2 minutes into the first episode. Couple that with America referring to Russia as "cannon fodder" and you've got yourself a winner of a show. If you're easily offended then this is obviously not the series for you, though I appreciate the culture clash and parodying of stereotypes. Of course, I also laugh at dead baby jokes.
Fans of the series might complain about the dialogue changes, which, from what I've seen, capture the spirit of the situation but contain altered jokes. Some of the voices are taking me a while to get used to, but overall I think the dubbing was well done. If I hadn't watched the Japanese version, I probably wouldn't think twice about judging the English voices. It's simply hard not to compare when you're used to something else.
I am impressed by the script changes and actually like the English dialogue more than the original. I'm basing my opinion on the few short clips FUNimation has put on YouTube, but I have high hopes for the rest of the series.

150 The Fire-Eater
151 Outrageous Octagon
152 Mystery Of The Dark World
153 The End, The Beginning
All these episodes are presented in remastered editions of their original full frame (4:3 Aspect Ratio) format. As is standard with these sets there will be no special features other than previews for other Funimation products and textless songs, so don't expect to find any here.
These episodes contain many classic Dragon Ball moments. Goku and his friends will face a greater threat in the form of Piccolo Jr, the one we all know from DBZ, and thus Goku will recieve some special training from someone who will become a DBZ permanent fixture. Training his friends will later go through in preparation to fight the Saiyans in DBZ. Everyone will grow a bit older and become young adults, but poor Krillin won't grow much taller. A jaded friend from Goku's past will return to settle a score and make a proclamation and all of this happens at another World Martial Arts Tournament. Which is the final World Martial Arts Tournament in the Dragon Ball storyline and actually the final one for quite some time even in the Dragon Ball Z storyline. The showdown between Goku and Piccolo Jr. takes place and there is something poetic about Goku showing his greatest villain thus far mercy in the end only for him to later in DBZ become one of his closest allies. Even for those who know the outcome the fight is still worth seeing and promises a truly explosive ending.
Finally when all is said and done there are some filler episodes regarding a wedding and one final quest before it can get underway. Goku must face old demons before moving on to his future, a future that you'll have to watch DBZ to see, or to see again for those who already have. Leading to Dragon Ball Z these episodes have more focus on the fighting and showdowns than on the actual dragon ball's themselves but they still have all the interpersonal relationships and fun characters that make Dragon Ball so successful and enjoyable. The final set is a great way to bring a close to the Dragon Ball story and bring us right back to where Dragon Ball Z begins, which is the spot most of us first came to know these wonderful characters in the first place. Thanks for your time.

These episodes are where Dragon Ball begins to move toward a close, thus everything is ratcheted up. We get the World Martial Arts Tournament showdown between Goku and Tien which is pure epic Dragon Ball, then no sooner does that end and everyone start to relax before Goku must face the death of one of his closest friends. King Piccolo and his henchmen, all named after instruments, arrive on the scene and Goku faces bigger stakes than ever before. There are several deaths of key characters and we also first meet Yajirobe, who Dragon Ball Z fans will be familiar with as a comic relief coward, only here he is the slightest bit more noble and willing to help fight. Once again it will all come down to who can find the dragon balls first.
Once this set is released we're only waiting on the fifth season set to bring us the final 31 episodes. Goku and his friends will face a greater threat in the form of Piccolo Jr, the one we all know from DBZ, and thus Goku will recieve some special training from someone who will become a DBZ permanent fixture. G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1 (1983) Review

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1 (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero" is literally the classic animated series that became an iconic series for thousands of fans who loyally collected the many awesome merchandise from Hasbro and continues to be a popular toy line today.
Although, the series was released in 1984, the series has spawned several of animated series and CG films. In 2008, the 3 3/4 action figures and vehicle line celebrated its 25th Anniversary and in 2009, earlier in the year, fans were treated with a more darker and more violent animated series with "G.I. Joe Resolute" and by the Summer of 2009, would be treated with the live action film and a release of a G.I. Joe video game.
So, what better time than now but to enjoy the classic 1985 animated series through SHOUT FACTORY's "G.I. JOE - A REAL AMERICAN HERO - SEASON 1.1" on DVD.
The DVD release is the second release of the popular animated series (the first was released through RHINO, note: RHINO only released season 1 and the first half of season 2) and both releases has its key differences which I will discuss further in my review. It's important to also note that some of the episodes for the first season were featured on DVD's that were included with various Hasbro toy box sets released in early 2009.
For starters, the series is not based on the original GI Joe toys that were released in the 1960's but is based on the Hasbro toyline which started in 1982 and the comic book series from Marvel Comics. The series was created by Ron Friedman and the first season on this DVD set comprised of three mini-series that aired in 2004-2005. The mini-series which consisted of "The M.A.S.S. Device", "The Revenge of Cobra", "The Pyramid of Darkness" and five separate episodes.
Here is a brief synopsis (no spoilers) for each episode:
DISC 1: THE M.A.S.S. DEVICE
* EPISODE 1 - The Cobra Strikes - Cobra has developed the ultimate weapon known as the M.A.S.S. Device. and attempt to steal a military satellite. Duke is captured.
* EPISODE 2 - Slaves of the Cobra Master - G.I. Joe tries to counter Cobra's M.A.S.S. Device with their own.
* EPISODE 3 - The Worms of Death - GI Joe takes the battle against Cobra undersea. Meanwhile, Snake Eyes goes to the arctic to find a radioactive crystal element.
* EPISODE 4 - Duel In The Devil's Cauldron - Cobra and G.I. Joe try to get the final element to activate their own M.A.S.S. Device.
* EPISODE 5 - A Stake In the Serpent's Heart - Destro takes Scarlett as a prisoner and the action-packed finale of the first G.I. Joe mini-series.
DISC 2: THE REVENGE OF COBRA
* EPISODE 6 - In the Cobra's Pit - Cobra attacks a G.I. Joe convoy and steals a high-powered experimental laser.
* EPISODE 7 - The Vines of Evil - Flint, Mutt, Junkyard and Roadblock are caught by vines in the Cobra's Pit of Chaos.
* EPISODE 8 - The Palace of Doom - G.I. Joe sends various teams to different regions around the globe to find the three fragments of the Weather Dominator before Destro and Cobra get to it.
* EPISODE 9 - Battle On the Roof of the World - Cutter, Wild Bill and Spirit battle the Baroness and Cobra on the Island of No Return.
* EPISODE 10 - Amusement Park of Terror - Storm Shadow infiltrates Joe headquarters. Meanwhile the battle in the Arctic continues.
DISC 3: THE PYRAMID OF DARKNESS
* EPISODE 11 - The Further Adventures of G.I. Joe - Tomax and Xamot seize control of G.I. Joe's Moon Star space shuttle.
* EPISODE 12 - Rendezvous in the City of the Dead - Shipwreck and Snake Eyes try to evade capture from Cobra.
* EPISODE 13 - Three Cubes to Darkness - G.I. Joe captures Tomax and Xamot plans to rescue him.
* EPISODE 14 - Chaos in the Sea of Lost Souls - Alpine and bazooka are joined by Quick Kick. Meanwhile, Cobra Commander activates the Pyramid of Darkness.
* Episode 15 - Knotting Cobra's Coils - G.I. launches a full-scale assault on the Cobra Temple.
DISC 4:
* EPISODE 16 - Countdown for Zartan - Zartan infiltrates the Worldwide Defense Center and tries to destroy it.
* EPISODE 17 - Red Rocket's Glare - Cobra uses Tomax and Xamot's company Extensive Enterprises to purchase the Red Rocket food chain and use its location for secret missile launching bases.

"G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero" will be released on July 14th but the 17-disc, 95 episode complete series will be shipping on June 22nd and will be bundled with many special features including a USB "Dog Tag" 1GB flash drive, collectible booklet and more..
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero" is in full color and presented in Dolby Digital. I have been asked by many G.I. Joe fans how SHOUT FACTORY's DVD's compare to the original RHINO DVD's.
In terms of video quality, there is a slight (very slight) difference between SHOUT FACTORY's picture quality and RHINO's picture quality. SHOUT FACTORY features a little less compression it would seem. I was comparing the scenes and it's very slight. In fact, SHOUT FACTORY's version seems a wee bit brighter.
But I wanted to compare a scene in the first episode where Cobra Commander and Destro were overlooking a computer after they were looking at crystals for the M.A.S.S. device. The reason I chose that scene is because it exhibits a lot of dust and scratches, compression and wanted to see if it was cleaned up. One thing I notice that both still had similar issues but a main key difference was that the size of the dust in the RHINO version were clumpier. Granted, its there if you pause and look at a frame but for most people, they are not going to see this. But there was no digitally remastering for those who were interested in knowing. The dust and scratches still exist and are part of the master.
I was also asked if the errors from the original series such as two Timbers in a scene or Scarlett sporting a mind control device (when she wasn't supposed to wear one, among a few errors from the original animation were fixed in this new release. These errors were part of the original master and is on the final cut. So, I doubt there will be any measures to correct those errors and that it's more than likely these will permanent errors that are part of the original animation.
I was also asked if the opening themes were the ones featured on the original broadcast. And the opening theme for all episodes on Season 1.1 is the version with Flint pointing as starting off with his scream of "Yo Joe!" and ending with a large Cobra spaceship crashing into the ground.
As for audio quality, this is where the RHINO and SHOUT FACTORY versions are quite different. The RHINO version features a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio which utilizes the surround channels and the LFE of your subwoofer and shows up on my receiver as Dolby Digital 5.1. Vocal tracks were featured on the center channel, music on the surrounds (and were louder than the dialogue track) and utilizing front channel and the subwoofer for the booms.
For the SHOUT FACTORY version, the audio is featured in Dolby Digital but does not take advantage of surround channels or LFE. In fact, the setting I ended up choosing on my receiver was "All Channels on Stereo".
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"G.I. JOE - A Real American Hero - Season 1.1' comes with a good number of special features. Included are:
DISC 1:
* Looking Back with Writer Ron Friedman, Part One - (7:03) Ron Friedman talks about why he had a voice over on opening theme of what G.I. Joe and Cobra is. Also, discussion of how he learned to write for children and how to get them to buy the merchandise and how he was involved with test groups for the toys.
DISC 2:
* Looking Back with Writer Ron Friedman, Part Two - (7:03) Ron Friedman talks about how he was hired from Hasbro and how important it was for him to create the characters and get kids to enjoy the characters and buy the merchandise. And how he would make episodes focusing on a primary group of characters and swing characters and how he came up with the style of voices for the characters.
DISC 3:
* Looking Back with Writer Ron Friedman, Part Three - (4:44) Ron Friedman talks about how he teaches a class in screenwriting at USC and Chapman University and how he asked by his students about his work on G.I. Joe and is asked to sign autographs and how he loves the G.I. Joe fandom.
DISC 4:
The fourth disc contains quite a number of special features. Bare in mind that these commercials are old and are not in the greatest of quality but nevertheless, was great to see included in this Season 1.1 set.
* Knowing is Half the Battle PSA's - (3:42) A total of seven PSA's that can be played separately or to play all. PSA's featured:
--- Alpine - What to Do When You're Lost
--- Barbeque - What to Do If Your House is On Fire
--- Deep Six - Don't Swim When It's Storming
--- Mutt - Don't Pet Strange Dogs
--- Quick Kick - Take...Read more›

Black Butler: Season One, Part 1 (Limited Edition) Review

Black Butler: Season One, Part 1 (Limited Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this anime a lot, though I have to agree with other reviewers and say the manga is better. But hey, what manga ISN'T better than the anime(other than ones that were written after the anime). I am not going to make this review very long, seeing how I personally hate reviews that pick at every little thing in the series, and are 5 pages long. (plus I am a bit lazy to make it very detailed)
Art/Animation:
I liked the art. I totally disagree with the other reviewer saying it was hard to recognize Sebastian in the anime. Seriously? What? Are you partially blind or something? Animation and drawings are completely different, so there obviously be some differences. I enjoyed both greatly.
Story:
I've read up to the most recent chapter releases of the manga, in Japan and I can't tell even begin to tell you how far way this anime strays from the plot of the manga. Though I suppose it'd be boring for both the anime and manga to be completely the same. Yes, there was some slight fillers in the first season, but nothing too bad that made me even begin to dislike the series. I wasn't a big fan of where the plot went at the ending of the series though, mainly because it got sort of dumb and freaky.
Characters:
The characters are amazing in BOTH the anime and manga. I love all the characters, (okay, all of them except Lizzy) and think their personalities are shown very well.
Overall:
I'd highly recommend this series. Especially if you are a fan of BL (there are some nice hints). I LOVE all of Yana Toboso works, and will be a fan for a very long time. While this series has it's -.- moments. I still very much enjoyed it.
Ps. I haven't purchased this product but I plan to. I just wanted to leave a review that this series was very good, since it got such a bad review.

Ciel Phantomhive is the most powerful boy in all of England, but he bears the scars of unspeakable suffering. Forced to watch as his beloved parents were brutally murdered, Ciel was subsequently abducted and violently tortured. Desperate to end his suffering, the boy traded his own soul for a chance at vengeance, casting his lot with the one person on whom he could depend: Sebastian, a demon Butler summoned from the very pits of hell. Together, they'll prowl the darkest alleys of London on a mission to snuff out those who would do evil. They're a rare sight, these two: the Butler who dismembers with dazzling cutlery - and the Young Master who carries the devil's marking. Transformers: The Complete First Season (25th Anniversary Edition) (1984) Review

A lot of us grew up on the Generation One or G1 Transformer's long before a live action film about giant transforming robots could have been thought possible. Now to tie in with this summer's live action sequel, Transformer's 2: Revenge Of The Fallen, comes this 3-Disc DVD set containing all sixteen episodes of the first season of this beloved eighties classic. Those sixteen episodes, originally airing September 17th to December 29th 1984, are:
1: More Than Meets the Eye (1)
2: More Than Meets the Eye (2)
3: More Than Meets the Eye (3)
4: Transport to Oblivion
5: Roll for It
6: Divide and Conquer
7: S.O.S. Dinobots
8: The Ultimate Doom: Brainwash (1)
9: The Ultimate Doom: Search (2)
10: The Ultimate Doom: Revival (3)
11: War of the Dinobots
12: Countdown to Extinction
13: Fire in the Sky
14: Heavy Metal War
15: Fire on the Mountain
16: A Plague of Insecticons
Special Features Are So Far Said To Include:

"Triplechanger: From Toy To Comic To Screen: The Origins Of The Transformers" Featurette
A Printable Script For The Episode "Transport To Oblivion"
& A Limited Edition Autobot Magnet
The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it's all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are still classics to those who remember them and will be more enjoyable for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really just a half hour commercial became common knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe just because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it's niche.
Fans should be very excited to own these episodes in a new more affordable set. The set is being put out by Shout! Factory and they have always done an excellent job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This set was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I'm very glad to see the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn't buy the more expensive original sets are going to be excited at the chance to get this one and I know that I can't wait. I originally gave this set 5 stars just for the opportunity to own these classic episodes in a proper DVD set, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to original broadcast versions with a new stereo soundtrack created from the original audio I'm more excited than ever.
Some may say that this series was just the next step in a great advertising campaign for children's toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the eye. Thanks For Your Time.
*Rather than clutter up the review page I have posted a list of episode descriptions in my comments section for those who are curious.
*It now appears that Shout! will also be releasing Transformer's G1 in a complete series set this summer. While I think this first season set is still great for some I personally am more excited for the complete series.

iCarly: Season 1, Vol. 1 Review

iCarly: Season 1, Vol. 1
Average Reviews:

I'm a dad with a kinder daughter. I bought her iCarly because it's one of the better tween type sit coms on tv these days.
Nikelodeon made a good choice by giving Miranda Cosgrove her own show. She comes across sweet in this new techy type series which casts her and her friend Sam as the dynamic duo of the iCarly web show. The balance between the girls and Freddie (tech producer of the show) is just right with Carly's older brother Spencer adding more humor to the mix.
This dvd includes 13 episodes of the first season and many of them are fun to watch. Some of the better episodes include iHatch Chicks which has baby chicks running around Carly's aparment. iWanna Stay with Spencer, when Carly is almost taken by her grandfather due to Spencer being irresponisble. iScream on Halloween is another favorite. Also the iwant a World Record was a good idea.
The show works well because it mixes regular sit com camera angels along with first person shots when the girls are doing the web show. It gives the viewer the feeling that they are actually watching a web show.
I have to say that I prefer the way Carly comes across more than the popular Hannah Montanna show. Hannah Montanna tends to be mean spirited in several of her episodes which bugs me sometimes. Miley Cirus has lots of episodes where she is getting revenge or is loosing her temper and blowing up. In iCarly Miranda Cosgrove is more reserved and less spiteful. That role is left to Sam as she picks on Freddie. I would say Carly is similar to how Lizzie Mcgurie was. A good kid who messes up sometimes. She learns from her mistakes or is playing peace keeper between Sam and Freddie.
iCarly is worth the price considering the fact that you are getting 13 episodes. Disney likes to give you 4 or 5 at a time for the same price. Nickelodeon seems to know what a good deal is. Hopefully they keep it that way.
All in all iCarly is a great tween show with a new techy twist. A good buy if you like the show already. A great choice if you want to try it out. My daughter likes it too. THUMBS UP!

In the spirit of Wayne’s World, Carly and her best friend Samantha "Sam" Puckett turn a boring school assignment into a fun, creative and hilarious web-show. When their friend Freddie accidentally leaks a video of their antics on the web, Carly, and average 13-year-old girl, becomes an unlikely online celebrity. Embracing her popularity, Carly convinces Sam, her co-host and comedic sidekick, and Freddie, their technical producer, to turn "iCarly" into a weekly show… where they can finally do and say whatever they want! iCarly is a convergent entertainment experience that unites the TV screen and the web for kids. Throughout the show, Carly will encourage viewers to post their own originally created content relating to the context of each show. Solicited content may become part of a future iCarly episode, or included in Carly’s online webcast, making iCarly the first scripted show on all of TV to incorporate original kid-created content.

Dragon Ball: Season One Review

Dragon Ball: Season One

I have long wondered when Funimation would finally get the rights to the first thirteen episodes of Dragon Ball allowing them to release a proper set. Now after all that waiting it's finally going to happen and their giving us the first two sagas and beginning of the third all in one set! I'm ecstatic to read from Gen Fukunaga, president at CEO at FUNimation Entertainment, that the original thirteen episodes will be redone uncut as up til now they've only been properly available in a highly edited DVD set titled 'The Saga of Goku'. While I happily purchased that set long ago from LionsGate Entertainment I'm more than happy to upgrade to this set if it means finally owning those first thirteen uncut episodes.
This set will contain the following 31 episodes from the Goku/Pilaf, Tournament and Red Ribbon Army Sagas:
The Saga Of Goku/Emperor Pilaf Saga
1 Secret of the Dragon Ball
2 The Emperor's Quest
3 The Nimbus Cloud Of Roshi
4 Oolong the Terrible
5 Yamcha the Desert Bandit
6 Keep an Eye on the Dragon Balls
7 The Ox-King on Fire Mountain
8 The Kamehameha Wave
9 Boss Rabbit's Magic Touch
10 The Dragon Balls Are Stolen
11 The Penalty Is Pinball
12 A Wish to the Eternal Dragon
13 The Legend Of Goku
Tournament Saga
14 Goku's Rival
15 Look Out for Launch
16 Find That Stone!
17 Milk Delivery
18 The Turtle Hermit Way
19 The Tournament Begins
20 Elimination Round
21 Smells Like Trouble
22 Yamcha Vs. Jackie Chun
23 Monster Beast Giran
24 Krillin's Frantic Attack!
25 Danger From Above
26 The Grand Finals
27 Number One Under The Moon
28 The Final Blow
Red Ribbon Army Saga
29 The Roaming Lake
30 Pilaf and the Mystery Force
31 Wedding Plans?
There haven't been any real extras on Funimation sets other than previews for their other DVD releases so I wouldn't count on finding any here. The set is said to include English and Japanese language options with the original Japanese musical score in 5.1 Surround. I'm glad Funimation and Amazon are announcing the set as Full Screen Aspect Ratio because though I adapted to the cropped 'widescreen' Dragon Ball Z sets I can't imagine watching Dragon Ball in anything other than 4:3 aspect ratio. I'm so excited for this to come out and can't believe that my long standing wish to have the first uncut season of Dragon Ball is finally coming true. Thanks For Your Time.
