(More customer reviews)I'm going to get one thing out of the way... I LOVE IT; it's a great little set with lots of little things that the completist-consumerist geek in me absolutely craves. That'll come last though.
FIRST, MY PROBLEMS WITH THE SET
There's nothing of any real consequence. Now I can't deny, the Geronimo Jackson CD is nice and unexpectedly fun, but the song has been available on iTunes for months, and it offers little insight.
Unlike most, I dig and understand that they wanted retro with the VHS, even if a VHS isn't technically authentic to the time period. What bugs me, like most, is that given that it's truly the only thing about the set with real weight and value to the experience, being VHS is just truly inconvenient. The end result is that the major player of the whole line-up gets seriously shortchanged; it's a brief but fairly important and entertaining video, but what are the odds that you're going to dust off that beast of a machine (the VCR) for viewing this thing more than once.
Everything else, which again I DO love, is pretty much fluff. It's written materials and creative packaging with 2 or 3 inside jokes (Hurley's famous garlic mayo), but nothing lengthy enough that you're going to pour over it again later...
*hypothetical complaint--why make one of the patches unique to a select few sets? I'd be pissed if I didn't get it (the submarine patch) given the price premium. Having said that... I GOT IT, lol. But sadly, my co-worker did not, and is thus sad.
ENOUGH COMPLAINING, I LOVE IT!!
It's big, and impactful. You're basically getting a 3" ring binder packaged in a cardboard box. This may be surprising, maybe even off-putting, but the outer sleeve is plain-as-day thick cardboard, albeit with fancy printing to mimic water stains and masking tape. Other than that, it's no different than moving boxes, and I think it's cool. It's easy to imagine they'd have these things stacked waiting for new recruits to grab them.
Inside is everything you need to know about life in Dharmaville. This is where the bonus stuff, while still admittedly just fluff, makes me geek out. You have the map of the barracks, some orientation materials, security protocols, etc., all packed in a firm, sturdy white binder with the Dharma logo emblazoned on the front. The most important piece in the binder though, would have to the confidential folder. Some are mad because yes, the folder is in fact sealed. To open it is to break the pull tab seal. Big whoop, that's what you bought it for. It does NOT damage your set, it's you enjoying your set. Besides, what's inside IS kinda cool, and though I know you can just search online, I'm not going to say here. It's nothing MAJOR, but still cool.
Some complain about the floppy sleeves for the discs. What the video doesn't show is that the sleeves, with discs inserted, then have their own lined binder pouches which, if the sleeves don't suit you, do a better job at cushioning and protecting the disc than a plastic tray. But I do think that the floppy sleeves go pretty hilariously far for the retro feel and are a welcome playful addition.
So, could we have done with more stuff? Absolutely. But then one has to ask, why now? I mean, especially since we're maybe only a year away from dropping an expected $250+ on a complete series set inside a package that looks like the top of the hatch (guessing, lol). Still, given that I could NOT miss out on LOST University (which is not being graded here but is AWESOME), I had to indulge myself in the now.

The characters struggle with the complications of friendships, romance, and passion both on the Antares and Earth, which test their integrity and strength as human beings. In addition to the interpersonal challenges, the Beta Object is affecting the crew physically, mentally, and emotionally. Defying Gravity does an outstanding job of appealing to all viewers, regardless of whether they consider themselves SciFi fans or not. Sadly, this television show went mostly unnoticed due to poor management by the ABC network. While it may not have gained the huge following desired by ABC during its short-lived debut, it has a loyal fanbase and the potential to achieve great success if properly advertised and scheduled.

(More customer reviews)The ABC drama series "Dirty Sex Money" created by Craig Wright ("Brothers and Sisters", "Lost" and "Six Feet Under") definitely made its impression when it took out an ad back in 2007 using Paris Hilton's jail sentence to promote its show. The series which was originally given 22-episodes for its first season and ran into bad luck (as with other shows) due to the WGA writer's strike. The first season only received 10 episodes and by the time the second season came back on air, it was ten months since the season finale.
Needless to say, the writer's strike definitely made "Dirty Sexy Money" a TV series casualty and unfortunately, the series was unable to get back on its feet. The remaining final episodes came back on by July 2009 but needless to say, with so many delays and its unpredictable schedule, many people were lost and eventually missed out on episodes. But fans who committed to the series will fortunately get a chance to see "Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season" released on DVD and give people a chance to catch up on the final season.
The main premise of "Dirty Sexy Money" revolves around a successful lawyer named Nick George (Peter Krause). A family man and dedicated lawyer, he takes the position of becoming the family lawyer of the very rich and well-known family from New York known as the Darlings. His father was originally the lawyer of the Darlings but since his mysterious death, he feels its necessary to take care of the family.
The Darling family is a powerful family in New York led by Patrick "Tripp" Darling III who wants nothing but the best for his children Patrick, Karen, Brian, Jeremy and Juliet. Unfortunately, his children to get themselves involved in some trouble and thus, its up to Nick to help bail them out.
Here is a spoiler-less summary of each episode featured in "Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season":
DISC 1:
* EPISODE 11: The Birthday Present - Six months later, Nick becomes an important part of the Darling family. Patrick's wife has had enough of his lies and does something about it, meanwhile Nick catches his wife Lisa making out with Jeremy Darling. Meanwhile, Karen Darling and Simon Elder's relationship grows stronger.
* EPISODE 12: The Family Lawyer - Letitia Darling is accused for the murder of Devlin George and Nick must represent her. Meanwhile, Nola's and Jeremy have a sexual relationship.
* EPISODE 13: The Star Witness - Nick wants to know from his mother about her final conversation with his father and to let her know that she will be the star witness for Devlin George's murder trial.
* EPISODE 14: The Silence - Karen makes an important decision for her relationship with Simon. Meanwhile, Patrick takes his anger out on his father, leading to near-tragedy.

* EPISODE 15: The Verdict - Simon Elder and Karen Darling make their marriage public and have a party for their engagement. Meanwhile, Brian's wife has been diagnosed with cancer. Meanwhile, Nick finds out that his wife's gallery is being funded by Jeremy and he has had enough.
* EPISODE 16: The Injured Party - Letitia gets into an accident and hits a cyclist named Wrenn Darcy. Wrenn stays at the Darling home temporarily. Meanwhile, Lisa now divorced from Nick acts on her impulses and becomes close to Jeremy. Meanwhile, we learn how evil Simon Elder can be and why Nola is forced to work for him.
* EPISODE 17: The Facts -A gossip columnist interviews Clark the chauffeur about scandals that involve the Darling family especially about Juliet and a time when Patrick was interviewed by Dan Rather.
* EPISODE 18: The Summer House - The partnership between the Darling family and Simon Elder begins. Meanwhile, Letitia goes off on Wrenn Darcy.
* EPISODE 19: The Plan - Brian's ex-wife's cancer worsens but they grow closer to each other. Brian's relationship with God becomes close again. Meanwhile, tries to reveal Nola Lyons secret to Nick. Meanwhile, Nick has to deal with Chase Alexander (brother of Patrick's wife Ellen) who believes Patrick murdered her.
DISC 3:
* EPISODE 20: The Organ Donor - Chase has escaped from the authorities and plans to exact his revenge on Patrick.
* EPISODE 21: The Convertible - Nick and Lisa get into a custody battle over their daughter Kiki. Meanwhile, Nick and Karen grow closer to each other once again.
* EPISODE 22: The Unexpected Arrival - Brian gets himself into trouble with Andrea once again. Meanwhile, as Nick and Karen begin their budding romance, he finds out something that may put a damper on their relationship. Meanwhile, Nola and Jeremy take action against Simon.

"Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season" is featured in widescreen with an aspect ratio of 1:78:1, enhanced for 16×9 television. For the most part, the picture quality of "Dirty Sexy Money" is good as expect from a drama series on DVD. But one of the positives of the series is that there is quite a bit of outdoor shots and definitely utilizes an elaborate set design to create the luxurious world of the Darlings.
As for the audio, the series is featured in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The series is primarily a dialogue driven series with front and center channels being the main source of audio distribution. Dialogue is clear and understandable. But for the most part, the audio is satisfactory for this drama series, this is not a series that doesn't feature any major scenes that involve surround sound usage.
Subtitles are presented in English SDH, French and Spanish.
SPECIAL FEATURES:

* Directing the Darlings - (11:31) Director Jamie Babbit talks about directing the series. Behind-the-scenes footage of Babbit working on certain scenes from the series. Also, interviews with the executive producers and more.

* Dirty Sexy Crafty - (9:15) Meeting with Josh Kuhn, the Mobile Craft Service Specialist who prepares the food for the cast and crew. The talent talk about the food they eat on the show and the top 5 things that people on the show love to eat and also behind-the-scenes look at Josh serving food to the cast.
* Faux Pas - Bloopers from Season 2 - (1:52) A short blooper reel featuring the cast of "Dirty Sexy Money".

JUDGMENT CALL:
"Dirty Sexy Money" was a series that I really enjoyed when it first aired on television. The first season showed promise but it was such a shame that the WGA Writer's Strike really put a damper on the series. Not only was the series cut short but its schedule was too erratic.
By the time it came back on television for season 2, it was already ten months later. Too much time had passed since the finale and to make things worse, when the second season did air, again the season was out of whack as the final five episodes took several months to air after it was reported that the series was canceled. Needless to say, the series did not have much of a chance to get back on its feet.
After watching "Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season", not only did I enjoy it, it was bittersweet because the series ends with a major bombshell and you know there are no future episodes to continue the storyline.
Overall, I feel that fans of the series can find some closure with this final DVD set and find some satisfaction from the final 13 episodes. As mentioned, the final episode was quite intriguing and again, it's a shame that the series will not be continued.
As for the characters, I found them all quite intriguing and you eventually become drawn to that character's storyline. I was also drawn by the drama and the multiple infighting between the characters, and it's quite interesting because one can find similarities with this drama series to 80's drama series such as "Dallas" and "Dynasty" which involve corporate greed, families that were born with luxury and of course, those few characters on the outside who seem to despise that lifestyle.
I felt that the trimming of the first season down to 10 episodes possibly took away from much needed character development and for the second season, although I enjoyed the series, I did have some problems with seeing the disintegration of Nick and Lisa's marriage but also seeing this somewhat unlikely storyline involving Simon Elder and Nola Lyon. It was a bit farfetched and in someways, I just felt that the character of Simon seemed a bit too young to be the rival of Tripp Darling and therefore, for me, it hindered the storyline as these two rich corporate behemoths would go against each other. It just didn't seem right.

Private Practice: The Complete First Season Review

(More customer reviews)I rather like "Private Practice". It's often implausible, but that's one of the features of escapist entertainment. The cast is talented and attractive. I'm looking forward to watching the new season. But I can't give this first DVD set a good review, because it just isn't a good value.
Due to the writers' strike, Season One of "Private Practice" only had 9 episodes. A normal season is 22 shows. But this collection's list price is the same as for a full season. The producers, having taken a major financial hit by not having as much advertising revenue as expected, are trying to recoup some of their costs from us by overpricing this set. I can't condone that.
I rate this collection 3-4 stars for quality, but only 0-1 stars for value. That gives a combined rating of 2 stars: disappointing.

Based on the title and subject matter, it may seem like a superficial love letter to the culture of the rich, the shallow and people famous for being famous, but it is so much more. I haven't seen the 1st season DVD yet, so this review is based on the 1st season episodes aired on ABC. Hopefully there will be DVD extras that add to the enjoyment of this set, though details haven't been provided yet.
In Dirty Sexy Money, the writers explore the meaning of extraordinary wealth and power, how those things can support an individual and give freedom, but also how they can distract people from their own true selves, their purpose and from what is really important. What does it mean to grow up in an environment with limitless resources? To live in an environment where anything, or anyone, you want can be bought? How does an individual in that environment find purpose or meaning in his/her life and relate to others? Is it a given that people in that situation will be corrupt or shallow? Or do we, as the public, just expect them to be, and so they seem to live up (and down) to our expectations? And what if you or I had the opportunity to join them, would we? And at what cost?
Those are the kinds of questions Dirty Sexy Money asks. Along the way there is a fun, rollicking soap opera-ish ride, with scheming characters, luxurious sets, beautiful people, gorgeous New York City scenery (in the pilot anyway) and amazing, amazing acting.
Sure, in this first season, there are uneven moments as the show finds its tone and its footing, but the characters and the situations will draw you in and entertain you nonetheless.
If you want, come for the flash, the beautiful people/clothes and the humor (there will be plenty), but stay for the writing and the performances (pretty much everyone in the cast delivers, and there are moments with Donald Sutherland, Peter Krause, Jill Clayburgh, Glenn Fitzgerald, Seth Gabel and others that are breathtaking) , and the commentary the series makes about how morality, balance, and humanity might even survive in our world, a world which often seems to only value superficial beauty, power and wealth.

Greek: Chapter One (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)A little Animal House, some Van Wilder, a dash of American Pie, and a pinch of Gilmore Girls-esque drama, Greek is the kind of premise that could have easily gone cheesy and overdone. Fortunately, it doesn't; whether it's depictions of life in the Greek system are accurate or exaggerated, it manages to find a happy medium between alcohol-drenched party scenes and actual character-driven drama.
It's the characters, while mildly stereotypical, that really make the show; anyone who was awkward as a college freshman, whether they were in the Greek system or not, will identify with Rusty, the dorky physics major who longs to be in a fraternity; his older sister Casey may at first glance play the perfect blonde sorority princess, but she has plenty of flaws and problems to work through. Her current high-society boyfriend Evan, while definitely arrogant and a little flaky, also seems to have a sensitive side; but it's Casey's ex, ringleader of the Animal House-esque Kappa Taus, aptly-nicknamed Cappie, who steals the show. A funny, fast-talking, goofball with a heart of gold (which gets broken entirely too often), he's the kind of character you can't help but love (unless your Evan Chambers, anyway). The supporting characters, too, are surprisingly well-developed (Dale, Rusty's Bible-thumping, physics nerd roommate is hysterical, and Casey's archenemy Rebecca is the girl everyone loves to hate), and the show even tackles such issues as gays in the Greek system. However, the main theme of the show seems to be the importance of brotherhood, family and friendship. All in all, a great show, definitely worth a look.

Brothers and Sisters - The Complete First Season (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Somehow this show originally escaped my radar - then I was talking to a friend about a song from one of the "Ally McBeal" soundtracks and she said, "have you seen the new show with Calista? And Rachel Griffiths from 6 Feet Under? And Sally Field and Patricia Wettig?" I went home that night, set a TIVO season pass, and was relieved to find all the full-length, previously-aired episodes on ABC.com. Soapy? A bit. Addictive? Definitely!
Some actors and their stories, like the brother and his wife trying to conceive, aren't the most mesmerizing...but overall this is a show you can easily get addicted to. Just the right amount of drama and humor to keep it from being a one-note affair, and the parade of guest stars (Meredith Baxter, Marion Ross, Susan Sullivan and Rob Lowe, who's technically credited as Special Guest Star for this season) is icing on the cake. I'm anxious for the new season to begin...and I can't remember the last time I said that about a series that wasn't on HBO!

(More customer reviews)In 2007, Shonda Rhimes (creator/executive producer of "Grey's Anatomy" and writer of "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement") developed a spin-off of "Grey's Anatomy" titled "Private Practice" based on the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). For the most part, "Private Practice" Season One lasted about nine episodes and received a so/so reception from fans.
For the second season, viewers were promised a much more exciting season and sure enough, Shondra Rhimes and crew were able to take the series to different heights this time around.
"Private Practice - The Complete Second Season" features 22 episodes (Episode 10-31) on six discs.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"Private Practice - The Complete Second Season" is presented in Widescreen (1:78:1) - Enhanced for 16×9 televisions. Whereas "Grey's Anatomy" tends to be focused indoors, inside the hospital, "Private Practice" has a slick California look. Indoor scenes are well-lit and outdoor scenes are quite vibrant but viewers will notice the grain in the series. Even during the low-light scenes, you do see a bit of noise but compared to other drama series on television, the series is above average in terms of picture quality on DVD.
As for audio, the series is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The series similar is primarily dialogue driven, so it's pretty much front and center channel driven. There is no accidents or any major sound effects or even a lot of music like "Grey's Anatomy" in "Private Practice" but for the most part, audio is clear and understandable.
The show is presented in English SDH, Spanish and French subtitles.

While the talents are complimentary, Lowell is more comedic when describing his photography.

JUDGMENT CALL:
With the first season of "Private Practice" receiving so-so reviews, the "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off needed to make sure that the second season was significant enough to captivate the audience's attention enough to stay for all 22 episodes.
So, what better with the country's economy affecting private practices, to show Oceanside Wellness Center in a similar predicament. The early episodes tend to focus on the company on the verge of bankruptcy and the Addison doing what she can to prevent the company from bankruptcy and hoping for the private practice to emerge from its problems.
But along with the company problems, each of the main characters have their own major issues.
Addison deals with major issues with the company (and eventually leading the company), problems with men, the return of her brother (and her brother working for the rival practice), her relationship with her friend Naomi starts to grow apart and we get to see Addison and McDreamy once again during the "Grey's Anatomy" cross-over.
This season's love triangle appears to be between Pete-Violet-Sheldon. As Violet becomes pregnant, she is not sure who the father of the baby is and both men makes things more complicated when each want to be with her. But if anything, the most significant part of season two is Violet's character at the season finale and to say the least, it will be interesting to find out if a major character does not make it for the rest of season three.
As for Naomi and Sam, things get quite interesting with them as Naomi now finally moves on with her life and starts to date other men (including Addison's brother Archer), while Sam starts to show more concern over Naomi as she is seen sneaking off quite often from the practice.
As for Cooper, his storyline becomes the Cooper-Charlotte storyline and Cooper now wanting to be there for his good friend Violet and move in with her and support her during her pregnancy, while Charlotte being the cold-hearted doctor of St. Ambrose and later on developing a rival practice against Oceanside Wellness, she becomes more jealous of the time Cooper spends with Violet.
And as for Dell, he has to deal with his ex-girlfriend's drug problems and finding out that he has a daughter and gets into an even more complicated situation. Talk about a character who's likability seems to have fallen.
And as the characters face their major issues, on the medical end, the series deals with ethical and moral issues. The series definitely received some controversy with episodes such as episode 20 titled "Contamination" which dealt with autism and whether or not vaccinations do cause autism, another that dealt with sexual relationship between a woman and a young teenage boy, accidental switching of embryos, physician-assisted suicide and siblings who have sex with each other and more. Needless to say, both Shondra Rhimes and Betsy Beers definitely wanted to push the button on certain medical issues.
But part of the problem with "Private Practice" is that it seems as if the writers can not keep up the quality of writing with many of their characters and some are not getting the time that they need. I felt that this was an angsty season and a season where characters storylines were a bit uneven. Writers...please find Addison a decent man instead of having her fall for someone that is always taken. Also, remember... Sam? He needs a storyline. And Dell, this character is really being jerked around quite a bit. "Angsty" seems to be my word to describe season 2. And to cap it off, a season finale that takes a story from what we see in the front page and definitely a dark and twisted finale that I was surely not expecting.
Overall, "Private Practice - The Complete Second Season" had a good number of entertaining episodes and the chemistry of the characters are pretty good and overall, I enjoy the problems and rivalry among the private practices but when it comes to the characters and their storylines, I'm hoping Season 3 is less angsty.
If "Grey's Anatomy" stars can have its up and downs but yet find some happiness, I hope the characters of "Private Practice" at least get some of that for season 3.

(More customer reviews)Finally, the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon that aired on ABC in 1993-1994 (known as "Sonic SatAM" to the fans) comes to DVD in its entirety. Many of those who managed to catch the show on TV well over 10 years ago fell in love with it then, and have been fans ever since. It had just the right blend of comedy, drama, and action, with no one of those standing out too much above the others. It was also a fairly dark show for its time. This is a much anticipated release in the Sonic fan community, and this DVD set contains all 26 episodes, collecting the complete series in one 4-disc set!
This cartoon was made back before the SegaSonic storyline really got developed, and you won't be seeing familiar faces like Knuckles, Amy Rose, or the more recent characters from Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow and Rouge, simply because, well, none of them existed back then (Sonic 3, which was Knuckles' first game, didn't even come out until the year after it started airing). But that doesn't detract from the show at all as there are plenty of well developed characters added here that weren't from the games. This cartoon set-up the first real storyline behind the whole Sonic universe (in the U.S. anyway), and in my opinion, was one of the best American made cartoons ever. The Archie series of Sonic the Hedgehog comics was loosely based on this cartoon, but really failed to capture the quality of writing used to produce this show. (Archie has since moved on to try to emulate the games more).
Despite the age of this show, if you're a Sonic fan, you definitely shouldn't pass this one up. Definitely the best Sonic cartoon ever produced, in my opinion, as well as one of the greatest cartoons of all time. I'd give it more than 5 stars, but well.. that's the most you can give here on Amazon.com :)

The Bionic Woman: Season One Review

(More customer reviews)Ever since the advent of digital video discs consumers and fans of classic television shows have been hoping and demanding to see "The Bionic Woman" on DVD. The series that starred Lindsay Wagner and made her into a household name was released in Europe on Region 2 dics, but the North American marketplace was virtually ignored due to ownership issues. Now, this wonderful and innovative series about a woman who possesses bionics and works undercover for the OSI while being a school teacher by day, comes to DVD on October 19, 2010. I for one am a very happy boy! I grew up watching Lindsay Wagner fight the bad guys and would watch with anxiety week after week to see what adventures the bionic woman would get herself embroiled in.
"The Bionic Woman" got her start on a two-part "Six Million Dollar Man". At the end of the second episode Jamie Sommers actually died. Overnight ABC was inundated with letters demanding Jamie live and be given her own series. Fred Silverman, president of the network and keen on seeing potential Nielsen ratings, especially those of a young demographic, caved in and Jamie Sommers was brought back to life and given her own weekly show, sometimes garnering higher ratings than that of Lee Major's series ("The Bionic Woman" finished at #5 in the 1975-1976 Nielsen Ratings).
"The Bionic Woman" was pure comic book fluff with a strong, intelligent woman as the lead, but the series would have been a bomb if not for the excellent acting chomps of Lindsay Wagner. Wagner was very likeable in her portrayal which explains why any girl watching "The Bionic Woman" during its original run wanted to be her and the boys wanted to marry her. Lindsay Wagner even won an Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1977. This was no small feat as Lindsay's competition that year was Angie Dickinson for "Police Woman", Kate Jackson ("Charlie's Angels"), Sada Thompson ("Family"), and Michael Learned for "The Waltons".
This oustanding four disc DVD box set will feature all 13 season one episodes that began airing in January, 1976 (the show was a midseason replacement) along with a slew of bonus features. The bonuses include a brand new featurette with Lindsay Wagner being interviewed called "Bionic Beginnings", audio commentary from Kenneth Johnson who created and directed the series, a gag reel (this is not to be missed as the bloopers are hilarious and Lindsay proves she has a tongue like a sailor!), and photo gallery. To make things even more appealing this set will feature two crossover episodes from "The Six Million Dollar Man" that showed how Jamie Sommers came to be. These episodes are entitled "The Bionic Woman-Part 1" (aired March 16, 1975) and "Part 2" (March 23, 1975), "The Return of The Bionic Woman-Part 1" (September 14, 1975) and "Part 2" (September 21, 1975)".
Important to note too is that it has been long thought by fans and critics of "The Bionic Woman" that the episode entitled "Welcome Home Jamie Part 1" was first aired on ABC as a "Six Million Dollar Man" episode. The truth is that is not the case. Recently in October, 2010 research consultants from Timelife who are bringing the entire "Six Million Dollar Man" series to DVD have discovered that "Welcome Home Jamie Part 1" was indeed the first ever "Bionic Woman" episode to be telecast on network television. It was long thought that particular episode was telecast as a "Six Million Dollar Man".

The series revolved around Betty Suarez (America Ferrera, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" films, "Lords of Dogtown"), a woman with a kind heart and is always giving. The problem is that she is not fashionable, known for her thick hair, eyebrows and big glasses and braces.

"UGLY BETTY" is presented in Widescreen (1:78:1) and is enhanced for 16×9 televisions. Production for "UGLY BETY" is quite slick and for a drama series, picture quality is along the same lines as abc studio's other DVD releases. Which is pretty good and compression artifacts and low light noise is not as visible.
As for audio, "UGLY BETTY" is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The series is front and center channel driven. Dialogue is clear, music is clear and overall, not a series to expect a lot of sound effects on your surround channels but for the most part, dialogue is understandable.
Subtitles are in English SDH, French and Spanish.

JUDGMENT CALL:
"UGLY BETTY" continues to have another solid, stellar year with season 3. If there is one thing that is consistent with the series is that the writing has always been top notched since the very first episode and most importantly, the cast has been quite awesome for the series. The series has been nothing but a pleasure to watch and see Betty's journey as a professional but also in her personal life. Everything seems to come together and work.
With this third season, there is quite a bit of laughter, typical backstabbing but even more emotional, dramatic scenes. The season finale for this third season of "UGLY BETTY" was very well done and the best so far.
Of course, this season had a lot of hype with what went on behind-the-scenes between Lindsay Lohan and the cast and crew. Whether or not the gossip surrounding what took place behind-the-scenes were true or not, the gossip definitely made people want to turn in to see this rivalry between Betty and Kimmie. Another actor who brought some interest in the show was "Karate Kid" actor Ralph Macchio who played the city councilman that Hilda was interested in. Pretty interesting role and hopefully we see more of him.

Oprah's mother was an eighteen-year-old housemaid named Vernita Lee. Her father was a twenty-year-old doing duty in the armed forces: his name - Vernon Winfrey.
For the first six years of her life, Oprah was raised on a Mississippi farm by her grandmother. Perhaps the first stroke of good luck for the young child. Oprah credits living with her grandmother probably saved her life.
At the age of six, her mother, Vernita Lee, decided that she could care for her young daughter and Oprah was sent to live with her in Milwaukee. From ages six to thirteen, Oprah stayed with her mother. She was raped by a cousin when she was nine years old and later molested by a male friend of her mother's and by an uncle. The young girl never told anyone about the abuse. Instead, she held her anger and pain inside and she rebelled. She repeatedly ran away and got into trouble.

Her mother decided to put her into a detention home. Fortunately for Oprah, she was denied admission to the home because there were no openings. So, in what may have been her second major stroke of good luck, she was sent to live with her father Vernon Winfrey in Nashville. Before she ceased her promiscuous and wild behavior, she became pregnant and gave birth to a stillborn baby boy when she was fourteen. The death of her baby devastated her and she vowed to turn her life around.
Oprah Winfrey began her career in 1973 in Nashville, Tennessee, as WTVF's youngest -- and first-ever African-American -- news anchor, before moving in 1976 to Baltimore's WJZ, where she took over the chat-fest People Are Talking in 1978.

In 1983, Winfrey moved to Chicago to host AM Chicago, which within three years would become The Oprah Winfrey Show, roll out nationally via syndication, to become what it is today.
On learning from life-- "And what I found is that every time you have to repeat the lesson, it gets worse. I call it God trying to get your attention. The universe trying to get your attention. "Sooo we didn't get your attention the first time. We are going to have to hit you a little harder this time." So I'm still doing it. I'm still learning.
And it seems worse because it gets worse. I say, the universe is always trying to get your attention. Sometimes it starts out -- any major problem you encounter -- as a whisper. By the time it gets to be a storm, you've had a pebble knock you upside the head; you've had a brick; you've had a brick wall; you've had a house fall down. And before you know it, you are in the eye of the storm.
But long before you are in the eye of the storm, you've had many warnings, like little clues. So now my goal in life is not to have to hit the eye of the storm, but to catch it in the whisper. To get it the first time. I think the thing, the one thing that has allowed me to certainly achieve both material success and spiritual success, is the ability to listen to my instinct. I call it my inner voice. It doesn't matter what you call it -- nature, instinct, higher power. It's the ability to understand the difference between what your heart is saying and what your head is saying. I now always go with the heart. Even when my head is saying, 'Oh, but this is the rational thing; this is really what you should do.' I always go with that little... feeling. The feeling. I am where I am today because I have allowed myself to listen to my feelings.

America's Funniest Home Videos Volume 1 (1990) Review

(More customer reviews)I definitely am always in the mood for something incredibly funny at times. That has been the case with the ABC show America's Funniest Home Videos. Since its debut in 1989 with Bob Saget, the show has been a constant in our lives and television. Yet, the show has really been a real status for laughter. While the show has constantly changed with the times, so have the hosts as well from Bob Saget who played Danny Tanner from Full House, the odd short-lived duo of Daisy Fuentes and John Fugelsang, and our current master of ceremonies Tom Bergeron who has done well as the recent host of Hollywood Squares. The question for Beregeron is could he deliver as the host, the answer is yes.
America's Funniest Home Videos, Volume 1 is a look at the first season through Tom Bergeron as the host. His delivery is a real return to the hilariousness that has made the show a absolute legend for ABC. The DVD set includes several episodes from his first year the host, including side-spliting video clips that just are incredibly funny in some cases and other unfortunately aren't. The collection also includes celebrated episodes like the 300th total series episode, and of course the usual $100,000 grand prize show.
All in all, I personally haven't seen all of the first year Tom Bergeron has hosted with America's Funniest Home Videos, but I definitely know that he feelings of funniness are there. I can't wait to see this year in full on DVD, and laugh out loud like everyone else. This is a great buy for fans of AFV, or anybody who hasn't seen the series at all.

Behind the veneer of an arrogant celebrity, who seems to have let dozens of best sellers and world acclaim go to his head, Castle is truly a kind-hearted man and a compassionate father. Besides writing, his favorite hobby seems to be irritating Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), the NYPD detective who was in charge of a investigating a string of copy-cat murders modeled after Castle's own murder mystery books. Since he's killed off the main character of his last series, Castle needs new inspiration for his next set of novels, and he finds his muse with the charming but difficult-to-crack detective. The chemistry between Fillion and Katic is astounding, leaving the audience with more to follow than just the murder cases. Unlike most criminal investigation shows, Castle has a heavy focus on humor and the strong development of its characters and their relationships. Not quite a drama and not quite a comedy, this primetime series has elements that appeal to any sensibility. The twisted murder storylines will keep you guessing for the full hour until the conclusion you never expected.
Bonus material for the DVD includes behind the scenes interviews with the stars, out takes, deleted scenes, and more. Strong first season. I'm greatly looking forward to watching this show thrive and burgeon into big-name status.

(More customer reviews)I never have before bought or even wanted to buy a DVD series of a television show, but this show is so funny and each week, I can't wait to see what's in store for the next upcoming episode. Season 1 is not even through it's airing at this time, but each weekly episode is strong and not one has never left me not laughing into hysterics. What a great cast! I'm so glad ABC signed on for a 2nd season. I've been saving each show on my TiVo (and how long can that last before you need to free up space)and later just love to playback an episode to watch...I'm always guaranteed a good laugh, no matter how many times watched. When this becomes a DVD set, I'm going to be one of the first in line to purchase it! I can't wait for its release!

(More customer reviews)Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman The First Season is a FIVE STAR show if I ever saw one.
This show has a completely new take on the beginnings of the Characters. It is creative in a way that I believe would make Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster proud. I believe this because I have the distinction of having Parents that not only went to School with both of the creators, but were their friends and were there when Joe and Jerry first came up with the idea of Superman. I have grown up with all sorts of stories of how Superman came to be in the first place. My Father's brother was in Art class with Joe and Jerry and witnessed the very first sketches of the man of steel. Therefore my feelings of this new and innovative creation are very personal.
Given this information, I must say that Lois and Clark are absolutely fabulous. The set designs and costuming ring very true to the original as well as adding it's own mark. It is done in a way that will sustain a certain timelessness. The use of the 1940's and the current times combined together are ingenious. This was a very clever way of giving the show a look and feel that will last forever.
The stories may not follow the exact history of the original Superman, but nonetheless are so very creative that they make you want to watch every episode because of it's freshness. They are exciting, humorous, and romantic making the show enjoyable to watch. The sexual tension between Lois and Clark not only makes one root for them to get together, but also encourages us to not to miss a single episode.
Dean Cain is the perfect Clark Kent/Superman and adds a down to earth quality that everyone can relate to. He is not only very handsome and charming, but extremely talented and adds an innocence to the character that has not been seen before.
Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane adds a completely new spin to the character. She is not only talented in her own right, but is classy, sassy, sexy, intelligent and very much her own woman. She adds all these qualities to Lois and still has the ability to show a certain underlined vulnerability at the same time.
The qualities in both of these people make them the perfect match. There in lies the magic and success. The secret to any good show is not only the strength of the story telling but the main characters as well. They must be solid not only as individuals but have chemistry between them. Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman has it all.
When one adds up all these factors, it gives the show a freshness that doesn't take anything away from the original. On the contrary it adds a uniqueness that makes the show a classic in it's own right that will definitely stand the test of time.
In conclusion, I not only recommend you buying this season but suggest that you get the other three for it only gets better each year. My only regret is that the show didn't last longer than four years.
