Twin Sisters Review

Twin Sisters

Trying to catch up on some of the significant international cinema of the last few years, I stumbled across the Dutch epic "Twin Sisters." Based on an enormously popular bestseller, this is a much honored film that represented the Netherlands at the 2004 Academy Awards. While set largely during World War II, and having much to say about the subject, this is first and foremost a study of sisterly love and commitment. For even though the characters are separated through the bulk of the picture, the loss and the bond that these sisters have infuse every scene and every decision that they make.
The film starts with a brilliant setup. When two young girls are left orphans in Germany, they are wanted by two different sets of in-laws. The German in-laws are a poor farming family who need free labor, while the rich in-laws live in the Netherlands and want to bring the girls up properly. A concession is made that pleases neither, but eliminates further debate. Lotte, who has consumption, is given away to the Dutch family who can try to cure her and Anna, the healthy one, is kept on the German farm. It is that random--the course of your whole existence decided in a split second. It's an interesting and thought-provoking topic.
Lotte is cured and leads a life of privilege. Playing the piano, luxuriating on yachts, and finding romance and engagement with a family friend--you can't help but envy her lifestyle. Anna, meanwhile, is kept from school by being declared "retarded," worked, and brutalized on the farm. The two girls lose complete track of one another, their "parents" have each made independent decisions that it is best if they don't communicate. Eventually realizing they are each still alive, they reconnect--but much has changed, including the rise of Nazism. The film looks at Anna's life as a German, she is a maid and supports her country. And the film examines Lotte's life. While still a German, she sees things from the outside--and, in fact, her fiance is Jewish.
The beauty of "Twin Sisters" is that you see these girls evolve as products of their environments. Each has much to be admired, but each makes terrible mistakes. Your allegiance flip-flops back and forth as you inevitably get caught up in their stories. The cast is impeccable. Through different ages, and through a narrative flashback structure, there is a lot of story to be told here. Occasionally, I wished to be able to spend more time in a certain sequence--to really feel its import. But there is no question that the film packs an emotional wallop. I respected "Twin Sisters," it's a serious minded film for people who like adult entertainment. The ultimate moral dilemma is posed, what if things were different? What if the roles had been reversed, would the outcome have been the same? Good stuff. KGHarris, 01/07.

Brothers and Sisters - The Complete First Season (2006) Review

Brothers and Sisters - The Complete First Season (2006)

Somehow this show originally escaped my radar - then I was talking to a friend about a song from one of the "Ally McBeal" soundtracks and she said, "have you seen the new show with Calista? And Rachel Griffiths from 6 Feet Under? And Sally Field and Patricia Wettig?" I went home that night, set a TIVO season pass, and was relieved to find all the full-length, previously-aired episodes on ABC.com. Soapy? A bit. Addictive? Definitely!
Some actors and their stories, like the brother and his wife trying to conceive, aren't the most mesmerizing...but overall this is a show you can easily get addicted to. Just the right amount of drama and humor to keep it from being a one-note affair, and the parade of guest stars (Meredith Baxter, Marion Ross, Susan Sullivan and Rob Lowe, who's technically credited as Special Guest Star for this season) is icing on the cake. I'm anxious for the new season to begin...and I can't remember the last time I said that about a series that wasn't on HBO!

Charmed - The Complete First Season (1998) Review

Charmed - The Complete First Season (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When Charmed debuted back in 1998, it was a show that many people were excited, yet hesitant to see. It was the first series for Shannen Doherty since her 90210 days and she would once again be teaming up with TV legend Aaron Spelling whom she was speculated having difficulties with on many occasions. It was also the career come back for Alyssa Milano who's only highlight since Who's The Boss was playing opposite Heather Locklear on Melrose Place. And Holly Marie Combs, the lesser known star then, had just come from CBS' family drama Picket Fences. All three actresses would be working together to pull off a drama about witchcraft. A taboo subject that many people wanted to avoid if it didn't have anything to do with comedy (Sabrina, Bewitched, etc.) and an idea that people in showbiz wanted to exploit after the success of 1996's The Craft. Alot was riding on this tv show that was placed on Thursday nights opposite Seinfield on a little known network called The WB. It wasn't just the talent everyone on the show had that made it a hit. Nor was it the original stories, likable and down to earth characters, the dazzling charm the three stars naturally exuded or the chemistry they created together on screen. It was all of the above and more. It was magic. Think Sex And The City on Wicca. It's all about the girls doing it for themselves and learning how to balance life and cope with eachother. Often amusing, sometimes scary and deeply touching. The show quickly became one of The WB's biggest hits and since has run for 5 seasons. We have seen characters come and go and we have laughed and cried with the show, but the heart of the story lies within the Halliwell family and how they stick together through thick and thin. And that is utterly charming. Now since the first season is ours to own, here is a listing for all 22 Episodes:
1. Something Wicca This Way Comes
2. I've Got You Under My Skin
3. Thank You For Not Morphing
4. Dead Man Dating
5. Dream Sorcerer
6. Wedding From Hell
7. The Fourth Sister
8. The Truth is Out There... And It Hurts
9. The Witch Is Back
10. Wicca Envy
11. Feats of Clay
12. The Wendigo
13. From Fear To Eternity
14. Secrets and Guys
15. Is There a Woogy in the House?
16. Which Prue Is It, Anyway?
17. That 70's Episode
18. When Bad Warlocks Go Good
19. Blind Sided
20. The Power of Two
21. Love Hurts
22. Deja Vu All Over Again
Enjoy this show and relive the magic all over again!

Charmed - The Final Season (2005) Review

Charmed - The Final Season (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, this here is the final season of CHARMED. The Charmed Ones, PIPER HALLIWELL (played by Holly Marie Combs, for the final time), PHOEBE HALLIWELL (played by Alyssa Milano, for the final time), & PAIGE MATTHEWS (played by Rose McGowan, for the final time) return for the final time, with LEO WYATT (played by the outstanding Brian Krause, for the final time), to battle demons & warlocks before they go on to the next phase in their lives, where they would leave a legacy to the future Halliwell witches, who are soon to come.
"Still Charmed & Kicking"
Presumed dead, the Charmed sisters start their demon-free existence with new identities brought about by a spell that altered their appearances to the outside world, but not to those closest to them.

"Malice in Wonderland"
Hoping to lure the Charmed Ones out of hiding, Haas, a young demon wanting to take over the Underworld, uses the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland fairy tale to prey on young victims.

"Run Piper, Run"
Looking for a new career path, Piper goes on an interview with a corporate recruiter, but is soon arrested when a background check reveals that the physical appearance she adopted was that of a woman wanted for murder.

"Desperate Housewitches"
Wyatt's impending school play brings out the competitive nature in Piper when her hand-sewn costume for Wyatt and her parenting ability are attacked by Mandi, the perfect Stepford-like mother.

"Rewitched"
Unaware that she is being watched, Billie jeopardizes the Charmed Ones' new lives when she uses her powers to save an innocent and is caught by Agent Murphy of Homeland Security, who has suspected all along that she and the "cousins" are involved in supernatural activities and that the Halliwell sisters are not dead.

"Kill Billie Vol. 1"
Armed and ready to vanquish, Billie inexplicably freezes and is flooded with childhood flashbacks when she sees her latest demon target, the Dogan. Wanting to prove to the sisters that she is an asset, Billie casts a spell to erase her fears and goes after the demon.

"The Lost Picture Show"
Wanting to get her old job back as a social worker, Paige's plan changes when her Whitelighter father, Sam, asks for her help with his charge, J.D., a future Whitelighter, who recently reappeared after fifty years.

"Battle of the Hexes"
The Charmed Ones are given their first Homeland Security case by Agent Murphy going through cold case files. Billie discovers a belt in one of the boxes and can't help but put it on.

"Hulkus Pocus"
Phoebe has decided to take a hiatus from men. Piper seems to think Murphy and the government is hiding something from the sisters.

"Vaya Con Leos"
Piper notices that the Angel of Death is watching over them, but what she doesn't know is that he is actually there for Leo.

"Mr. and Mrs. Witch"
Billie's parents are in town and have supper with their daughter and the Halliwells.

"Payback's a Witch"
With the intention of helping his parolee get a loan, Henry, along with Paige, go to a bank but instead the parolee decides to take everyone at the bank hostage. Meanwhile, Phoebe and Piper have their hands full when, during his third birthday party, Wyatt turns three of his toys into real people.

"Repo Manor"
Phoebe, in an attempt to move on with her own life, signs a lease for a new apartment, much to the worry of Piper, while Paige considers telling Henry she's a witch.

"12 Angry Zen"
In searching for information about Leo, Piper discovers a message from Lo-Pan, a monk and keeper of a sacred Buddhist staff containing the power of influence.

"The Last Temptation of Christy"
Paige begins to realize the difficulty in dating a mortal when Henry tries to immerse himself in her magical world. She finds herself even more conflicted when a suitor, Sir Simon Marks, arrives hoping to convince her to marry him so they can become the ultimate magical couple.

"Engaged and Confused"
Piper organizes an engagement party for Paige and Henry, but the wedding is put in jeopardy when the couple begins to get cold feet. Phoebe notices a strange man following her, and soon discovers that he is a Cupid.

"Generation Hex"
Two former students of Leo's from Magic School turn up at the manor to inform the Charmed Ones that demons Leo had imprisoned in the Magic School dungeons have escaped and are seeking revenge.

"The Torn Identity"
Christy becomes a powerful force in the Underworld as the demon Creo tries to convince her that she needs to get Billie away from the Charmed Ones so she and her sister can fulfill their dark destiny.

"The Jung and the Restless"
The Charmed Ones are put into a dream-like state by Christy so that Billie can learn something about each of them.

"Gone with the Witches"
Convinced that The Charmed Ones are too self-involved to protect the "greater good," Billie and Christy team up to destroy their reputations in the magical community.

"Kill Billie Vol. 2"
Billie and Christy have managed to turn everything around: while the two of them are now at the Manor and demons are at Magic School, the Charmed Ones are forced to hide in the Underworld.

"Forever Charmed"
After the death of their respective sisters, Piper and Billie go their separate ways, both determined to get their families back together.
What an excellent season to close out the series. The series finale was absolutely incredible, especially the ending, with the sisters writing down everything they had experienced in the last eight years (eight years for Piper and Phoebe, five years for Paige), where it then shows an elderly Piper reading their legacy to her young granddaughter, who is named PRUDENCE (after Prue). As an elderly Piper and an elderly Leo ascend the long staircase in the old Halliwell Manor, they pass many photographs taken of the Halliwell family, including Penny Halliwell (good ole Grams), Patty Halliwell, Paige, Leo, Piper, Phoebe, Wyatt, & Chris. This show was, in so many ways, very amazing, and I still find myself heartbroken that it is now all over. I do wish the entire cast (SHANNEN DOHERTY, HOLLY MARIE COMBS, ALYSSA MILANO, ROSE McGOWAN, BRIAN KRAUSE, & KALEY CUOCO) nothing but the very best in their careers.

Ballet Shoes Review

Ballet Shoes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
BALLET SHOES (starring Emma Watson... celebrated for her lead roles in the Harry Potter films...along with an all-star acclaimed ensemble cast) is absolutely wonderful. I personally am in love it. Targeting a very large and underserved audience which is best defined as "moms and their daughters", Ballet Shoes is a film about realizing ambitions; a film where its tag line `dreams do come true' is really the `spot on' underlying message of the film... and the storyline. I believe it is destined to be a huge success for it is a tale of inspiration indeed.
A big-budget Granada film production, originally for the BBC, Ballet Shoes is based on the literary classic penned by Noel Streatfeild that women especially are very familiar with as key reading material from their childhood. A costume drama with absolutely stunning cinematography, the film portrays 1930's London with a sense of dreamy realism. For those who recall the box office smash "You've Got Mail", the book is the one being sought after that Meg Ryan launches into a verbal expose about. Ms. Ryan was right on the money, as is this adaptation of the tale.
Ballet Shoes is the story of three orphan girls; Petrova, Posie and Pauline (Emma Watson) who are raised as sisters after being brought together by a rich, world traveler as babies. As they grow up, each girl develops a dream of their own. Pauline wants to be an actress; Petrova longs to be an aviator; Posie wishes to dance. Circumstances bring them together, and together they vow to go down in the history books. "We three Fossils vow...". This vow launches the three Fossil sisters on their voyage, a journey that they travel individually as well as together, one that can only serve to inspire any young girl who watches the film.
On a personal note, I watched this film with my 8 year old daughter and 6 year old son. While my son fought to pay attention (not surprising), my daughter was riveted throughout the film. The appearance of `Hermoine' as a teen brought her into focus early on, and then the tale itself kept her eyes and ears wide open. She's asked repeatedly to watch Ballet Shoes again, which of course she has. My son, of course, is back to watching `his thing', Spiderman, Superman and The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers...
Ballet Shoes, in a certain sense, is a long form faerie tale, and I recommend it with no reservations whatsoever as superb family viewing.
