(More customer reviews)This is my second hip-hop instructional video purchase, and the first that delivered what it promised. Rather than featuring stage dancers who tell you the most important thing is to feel the groove, it features club-going dancers who break down simple club moves (like grinding and side-stepping) into almost idiot-proof steps. They demonstrate these from multiple angles, speed them up, and then have ladies come out onto the dance floor to show what the interaction might be like when you are doing this move at the club. It would have been nice if some of the moves were even more idiot proof, but careful repeat viewings of instructions do the trick.
As a bonus, there are interview segments where "real girls" talk about what they are looking for in a guy at the club, along with do's and don'ts. The advice is generally good, and it is clear that these are women who spend a lot of time at clubs. I do feel that they could have found more attractive women to give this same advice.
The day I wanted to go out, I opened the video up, and watched and practiced a few moves, getting the basic feel for them. When I went to the club, I was stunned by how simply most people dance. Girls who I was afraid to dance with before were more approachable, because it was clear that they have pretty much no idea what they're doing! My rudimentary skills gotten from one hour of practice were enough to give me the confidence to go out there. I believe that whether or not that is true for you or your scene, this video has enough to make you comfortable provided you practice it.
Overall, if you're shy and avoiding the clubs because you feel like you can't dance, this video is exactly right for you.

Breakin' Collection (Breakin' / Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo / Beat Street) (1984) Review

(More customer reviews)It's time to put your headband and parachute pants on and break out those Grandmaster Flash records for the holy breakdancing trilogy of films. These movies were made pre-Gangsta rap when disputes were settled either on the dance floor or on the mic. Breakin', its sequel, Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, and Beat Street were all released in 1984 and are a fantastic time capsule of their times in all of their cheesy (and in one case not so cheesy) glory.
Looking at it now, Breakin', with its laughably cheesy dialogue ("Blond, brunette - if they're looking for hair why don't they look for gorillas?"), horribly dated `80s fashion (skinny ties! headbands! parachute pants!) and wooden acting, is a harmless, cartoony look at a more innocent time. And let's be honest, that is part of the film's charm.
After the surprise success of the first Breakin' movie a sequel was quickly rushed into production and the result is Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (great title, btw). Special K, Ozone and Turbo are back and this time out our heroes have come together to save an inner city community centre from a greedy developer who wants to knock it down and put up a shopping centre. They have 30 days to raise $200,000.
Beat Street is the East Coast answer to Breakin' that was grittier, edgier and therefore not as successful but definitely more authentic. Shot on the dirty, grungy, pre-Giuliani streets of New York City, it follows Kenny (Davis), an up-and-coming rapper/DJ who is buddies with Ramon (Chardiet), a gifted graffiti artist who uses the subways and sides of buildings as his canvas.
Unlike Breakin', this is how the hip hop scene really looked and sounded back in the day. Parties take place in the basements of burnt-out buildings in the slums of the city. These guys are all young, poor and hungry to make it out of the ghetto anyway they can. Beat Street also trumps Breakin' in the number of cameos by pioneers of the genre, featuring the likes of DJ Kool Herc, Kool Mo Dee, Doug E. Fresh, Afrika Bambaataa and Melle Mel. This also results in a great soundtrack that shows many of the influences on early hip hop: calypso, salsa, jazz-all thrown into the mix.
Beat Street is everything that the Breakin' films aren't: gritty, cold, gray with characters that swear and even die. It is a fascinating example of the polar ends of the spectrum and this box set collects all three movies for one to immerse themselves in early '80s culture.
MGM has basically repackaged these three movies and so we have Breakin' and Breakin' 2 presented in crappy pan and scan with nothing more than a trailer as an extra. Beat Street can be seen either, pan and scanned or widescreen with a trailer included.
Included exclusively with this box set is a DVD of extras. Sadly, they have almost nothing directly to do with the three films which is a big disappointment. Surely, they could have gotten Shabba Doo and Boogaloo Shrimp back for some new extras? What's Rae Dawn Chong done lately? And where's the deleted scene of Kadeem Hardison cut from Beat Street?
Instead, the focus is on the hip hop culture itself. First up, is "The Culture of Hip Hop" which traces the genre's origins. There is a surprising lack of commentary from celebrity pioneers like DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and others. Instead, more obscure (to those not in the know) people talk about the basic elements of hip hop and b-boy culture.
"The Elements of Hip Hop" breaks it down into four components: graffiti, DJing, breakin' and MCing. This is a pretty decent introduction to the basic components of the culture and a nice companion piece to the first featurette.
"Beat Street Battle: Rock Steady Crew vs. New York City Breakers" is the only extra that has anything to do with the films in the set and it is just a scene lifted from Beat Street.
"Shout Outs" is basically a montage of people who were interviewed in the first two featurettes giving thanks to all the people who inspired and supported them over the years.
Also included is a music video for "Will Not Be Destroyed" by the Living Legends with loads of nice breakdancing footage.
Finally, there are small galleries with stills from each of the three movies from the set.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Off the Map (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I wasn't sure what to expect from a RHCP's live performance with John Frusciante back in the lineup. By far my favorite guitar player they've had, I didn't know if he could still play after his drug abuse problems in the years away from the band. Their "Californication" did little to alleviate those fears, his playing and soloing being so sparse and sort of un-practiced sounding. Don't get me wrong. "Californication" is a great album but it's much different from the chops galore "Blood Sugar Sex Magic". (And I don't mean that as a slam-BSSM is a masterwork in no small part due to Frusciante's intricate, interweaving lines throughout).
"Off the Map" put all my doubts to bed. Frusciante plays his [behind] off. Just check out "If You Have to Ask". Shredding, but he's so much more than than just a shredder. Something magical happens when his Strat, through a Wah, hits a Marshall. It's the tone for sure and then his note selection and use of space that really sets him apart from "shredders". I had read recently in a guitar magazine interview that he's trying to change his style, henceforth the new, sparse approach he's used on the last two albums. It's pretty funny to watch actually. When they play the new songs his playing shifts dramatically to the new style he's developing.
And don't let me forget Chad Smith and Flea. They are powerhouses here. Flea's gone from slapmaster (oh, he can still slap!) to improvisor and it suits him well. Chad is like a rock holding John and Flea's improvisations together.
This is a fun and inspiring dvd. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star review is because it does falter here and there. But that's what you get when your live show isn't prerecorded canned [stuff] and you take musical risks. That where the fun happens with these guys.

(More customer reviews)Paramount and MTV have released Save The Last Dance 2. The direct to DVD release arrives in stores October 10th. Izabella Miko stars in the film as Chicago native Sarah. She arrives in New York to attend Julliard with a firm love of hip-hop and a love of ballet. Shortly after arriving at Julliard she meets Miles. Miles is all about hip-hop and he takes an interest in Sarah and provides her with creative stimulation both inside and outside of the classroom. He is a Julliard drop out who now teaches at the school. Sarah isn't the greatest dancer in the world, but her mixture of classic ballet moves and modern hip-hop dance bring her fans, especially at the club when she wins a dance off up against the clubs hottest female dancer. Nightlife aside, Sarah has to keep up with a demanding ballet program all in efforts to become a prima ballerina. On top of that, her ballet teacher has a strong dislike of hip-hop culture. The "poignant, heart wrenching" aspect of the film comes with Sarah on a mission to find out why Miles dropped out of Julliard. She just can't understand why someone would give up on a Julliard education.
Save The Last Dance 2 is an entertaining film, although the storyline isn't as poignant or well written as the original film. Certain elements of the film will remind a true film buff of the 80's dance film Girls Just Want To Have Fun The Movie. Take Save The Last Dance 2 for what it's worth, 82 minutes of home entertainment. The film includes a hip-hop flavored soundtrack and a guest appearance from R&B sensation Ne-Yo. One thing I noticed is several times the actresses native accent slips through in a few scenes. Izabella Miko is a Polish native who moved to the United States to pursue a ballet career, so she is no stranger to the ballet world.
Save The Last Dance 2 is rated PG-13. As for the rating, there isn't much harsh language but there is a rather intimate bedroom love scene between the two lead characters which was pretty unnecessary.

The salsa steps are covered too briefly and only from the man point of view (so ladies can't learn their steps), but at the other side the steps you need to learn are too complex for a workout.
If you want to learn salsa get The complete salsa mastery from SalsaCrazy. For effective workout, get something else.

(More customer reviews)Shawn Trautman is the best dance instructor yet! A great teacher in addition to dancer. I've tried several dance instruction VHS and DVD's (9 in all from Christy Lane, Diane Horner, Teresa Mason, Wiley Hicks, and Cal Pozo), but I didn't stick with them, because they would move so fast that you'd get lost. I would get tired of starting them over and over just trying to pick up the steps. But Shawn makes it so simple to learn, keeping it at a slower pace for the beginner. He also throws in some variations for more challenge. They're so good, I have added 4 of his DVD's to my collection. But his aren't collecting dust like the others.

Center Stage: Turn It Up (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I enjoy dance movies and have the first "Center Stage" on dvd. I wasn't sure what to expect from the sequel but decided to check it out when it premiered in Oxygen channel. I found myself hooked within the first 10 minutes. Kenny Wormald and Rachele Brooke Smith are attractive and talented young actors who do a great job of carrying this movie. Both actors are clearly cast for their dancing and athletic abilities, as well as their good looks, and for novice actors, they do a creditable job.
The story centers around Kate Parker (Smith) and Tommy Anderson (Wormald). Kate dreams of attending the American Ballet School in NYC but unfortunately doesn't make the cut at audition. Tommy - a former hockey player turned ballet dancer - gets in. When Tommy spots Kate at the audition, sparks fly. Dejected Kate takes a job at a bar/dance club that is owned by Tommy's friend and Tommy falls for Kate. Tommy offers to help Kate improve her ballet skills, while Kate helps Tommy improve his "hip/hop-street dance" skills. They hit it off and fall in love. Conflicts arise when Tommy's wealthy classmate Suzanne (Sarah Jensen) gets in the way and Kate is torn between her fear of rejection (as she plans to re-audition for ABS) and her dreams of being a ballerina.
If you love dance movies like "Center Stage," "Step Up" and "Save the Last Dance," then this movie is for you. The dancing is more of a blend of the first "Center Stage" and "Step Up" with ballet moves mixed in with hip-hop/street dance. Both leads are very talented and live up to the demands of the complex dance routines. Smith started out as a gymnast and it shows. She is also charming and lights up the screen with her big smile and gorgeous eyes. Wormald was a back-up dancer for Justin Timberlake and was in the reality series "Dancelife." With his brown eyes and intense stare, he is definitely swoon-worthy.
Back from the first "Center Stage" are Peter Gallagher (in the same role) and Ethan Stieffel (Cooper Nelson - now an instructor), but don't expect Amanda Schull and Sasha Radensky from the first film. In all honesty, the new leads are interesting enough to hold the story so I spent little time regretting their absence. The music blends well with the storyline and the dancing is superb.
If you're going in expecting to see a good made-for-tv movie with great dancing, attractive and talented leads and an engaging storyline, then you won't be disappointed. Think of it as "Center Stage" meets "Step Up" with a bit of "Flashdance" sprinkled in and you're all set. For my part, I enjoyed it and certainly plan to purchase the dvd when it comes out. And if they ever do release the soundtrack, then I'll be in line to buy that, too.

Ballet Shoes Review

(More customer reviews)BALLET SHOES (starring Emma Watson... celebrated for her lead roles in the Harry Potter films...along with an all-star acclaimed ensemble cast) is absolutely wonderful. I personally am in love it. Targeting a very large and underserved audience which is best defined as "moms and their daughters", Ballet Shoes is a film about realizing ambitions; a film where its tag line `dreams do come true' is really the `spot on' underlying message of the film... and the storyline. I believe it is destined to be a huge success for it is a tale of inspiration indeed.
A big-budget Granada film production, originally for the BBC, Ballet Shoes is based on the literary classic penned by Noel Streatfeild that women especially are very familiar with as key reading material from their childhood. A costume drama with absolutely stunning cinematography, the film portrays 1930's London with a sense of dreamy realism. For those who recall the box office smash "You've Got Mail", the book is the one being sought after that Meg Ryan launches into a verbal expose about. Ms. Ryan was right on the money, as is this adaptation of the tale.
Ballet Shoes is the story of three orphan girls; Petrova, Posie and Pauline (Emma Watson) who are raised as sisters after being brought together by a rich, world traveler as babies. As they grow up, each girl develops a dream of their own. Pauline wants to be an actress; Petrova longs to be an aviator; Posie wishes to dance. Circumstances bring them together, and together they vow to go down in the history books. "We three Fossils vow...". This vow launches the three Fossil sisters on their voyage, a journey that they travel individually as well as together, one that can only serve to inspire any young girl who watches the film.
On a personal note, I watched this film with my 8 year old daughter and 6 year old son. While my son fought to pay attention (not surprising), my daughter was riveted throughout the film. The appearance of `Hermoine' as a teen brought her into focus early on, and then the tale itself kept her eyes and ears wide open. She's asked repeatedly to watch Ballet Shoes again, which of course she has. My son, of course, is back to watching `his thing', Spiderman, Superman and The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers...
Ballet Shoes, in a certain sense, is a long form faerie tale, and I recommend it with no reservations whatsoever as superb family viewing.

Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)A nice return to good Barbie movies. This is (loosely) based on the fairy tale of the 12 dancing princesses. Rewritten and remodelled for a Barbie-style ballet movie.
Genivieve is the 7th of 12 princesses. Her father calls for the Duchess Rowena to look after them as his wife is dead. The duchess has plans of her own, and with her strong-man servant and her monkey, she works to take over the kingdom and get rid of the 12 daughters. She starts by taking all the fun and colour out of their lives, trying to quash their spirit.
Genivieve, however, discovers a secret magical kingdom below the floor of their bedroom where the princesses can escape at night and dance the night away until morning. They have their dancing shoes from Eric, the Cobbler who also happens to be extremely gorgeous and nice - and not a little in love with Genivieve. When Rowena discovers the secret stairwell she seeks to trap the princesses down there forever. But toghether they escape, and rush to save their father who Rowena is attempting to kill.
It is a lovely movie, there is lots of dancing which is beautifully done given there are twelve characters it is easy to form nice chorus lines etc. 3 are little Kelly sized girls, there are 2 teenagers and the other 7 are adult sized. There could be some confusion, luckily they are named alphabetically from A to L according to age - unfortunately many have very un=princessy names like Lacey, Hadley and Courtenay.
The animation is lovely although there is an odd piece of oddity in the filming. For some reason near the end when Genivieve is luring Desmond away from his post she seems to go out of focus slightly, it might be my particular player.
There are some nice extra features, the making of the movie is excellent and my children were fascinated by it.
I really like the toning down of colours. The castle and environs looked colourful without the overwhelming brightness of some of the earlier movies.
Overall this is a great fun movie which my children have enjoyed a number of times and I also enjoyed. It can be watched many times and still find something new. I just hope that the Barbie makers will be working on another singing movie. the Princess and the Pauper still rates as the top Barbie movie ever - the songs were inspired and fun. My only real gripe on this movie is the enormous number of merchandise from this - 12 characters!

(More customer reviews)These areas are what I really wanted to work on, so I couldn't wait until the 4-week chart got to this one. I love this one the most. This is the most hip hop dancing, with a little bit of stank on it and a whole lot of popping. After this video and the "Total Body Burn," I am an even bigger expert in popping. Some of these moves are things I'd do in a club regardless and never really regarded them as exercise. Tanya was getting it on the "sexy" roll body exercises and, besides Shaun, the African American lady on the left-hand side was putting in enough extra energy to keep me hype. Now the mat part at the end was suicidal. The first time I did it, I wanted that to be over as soon as it started and couldn't wait for the cool down. But after the first time when my legs weren't sore, it was fun to do. I believe this DVD workout will do what it promises, and as he said via message, "make you look cuter in your jeans."

(More customer reviews)What's up with all the flack this movie's been getting from critics? It's absolutely dazzling! This has to be one of the best musicals of the past decade. The musical numbers are phenomenal, the costumes are fabulous, and Christina is just marvelous. I've always known she was a great talent but I think this movie is just what she needed to showcase that talent. Her acting was good, her dancing was on point and what can I say about that voice? I'm not a fan of Cher but I really enjoyed her in this movie. Christina and her have great chemistry. The love story was also really cute. I'm salivating for this to come out on DVD/blu-ray so I can watch it over and over again!
