The Highwaymen - On the Road Again Review

The Highwaymen - On the Road Again
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"On the Road Again" is a good video portrait of the Highwaymen. This hour long DVD is as close as most will ever come to a Highwaymen show. The camaraderie and bond between Waylon, Willie, Johnny and Kris is as apparent here as it is invisible on the corresponding album. The sentiment that the group is made up of four ol' friends comes across strongly. Relevant interview fragments are sprinkled between and within songs. Regardless of who your favorite Highwayman may be, the song selection is good as the band plays most of the favorites that one would expect like the Dukes of Hazzard Theme, Folsom Prison Blues, Me and Bobby McGee and Riders in the Sky. The United Kingdom may seem like an odd place for a Highwaymen video concert, but the boys explain their connection with the land and people. While the video production is good, the sound could be better. At times, the audio sounds like an audience recording. "On the Road Again," may be the essential document to showcase the Highwaymen's power, talent and warmth.

Here's a novel idea, let's have a concert DVD that actually FEELS like a concert. Rare, I know. Difficult, not impossible. Keith Urban's "Livin Right Now" is reason enough to have faith in concert DVD's. This package is one of the best concert discs to date. Start to finish this is a fun party. As stated earlier, you will feel as if you are there. It's HDTV stunning and surround sound crisp. Hey Keith, spread the word, this is how concert DVD's are SUPPOSED to be. Thank you for this.
P.S. I bought this disc for my wife. She's the country fan. Alas, I am now a fan of Keith Urban's music.

Dixie Chicks: Shut Up & Sing (Full Screen Edition) (2006) Review

Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing (Full Screen Edition) (2006)
Average Reviews:

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the number-one selling gal group in history were to go to another country and say they were embarrassed that the leader of the free world was from Texas?
Well, you are in luck, because "Shut Up and Sing" is a documentary focusing on that very question.
It all began with a little zinger, a bit of nothing really, directed at some president or another. But... that zinger irritated me. You see, I like my music with soul, but hold the politics, thank you very much. When ensuing boycotts were bandied, I was amused. Turnabout is fair play. But then something spooked the herd and... good God, the entire genre of country music went stampeding off a cliff. I was not amused.
"Shut Up and Sing" makes us all Dixie Chicks. Through the camera's eye, we become one of the girls as they move from slinging free speech, to receiving free-flowing hatred, to shifting into (my favorite) a reasoned, measured fight mode. Along the way we discover that the Dixie Chicks are loved wives, loving moms, supportive friends, amazing artists and... the target of crackpot death threats. Who said that was okay?
America didn't. I didn't. And I bet you didn't either.
From this evolution of events, we witness the genesis of the next Dixie Chicks album "Taking the Long Way." With producer Rick Rubin, the Chicks put voice to their American experience. The top of the charts and five Grammy nominations followed.
Question: What do the Dixie Chicks, Abraham Lincoln, and a man standing in front of a line of Chinese tanks have in common?
Answer: They are all my heroes.

George Strait - For the Last Time (Live from the Astrodome) (2002) Review

George Strait - For the Last Time (Live from the Astrodome) (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
George Strait was given the honor of playing the final concert at the Houston Astrodome in 2002. He appeared frequently at the Astrodome in the past, so his concert was an emotional occasion for George and his fans. I've never had the chance to see George in concert, but I really love his music. Fortunately, this DVD captures him in nice form performing some of his greatest hits.
1) Write This Down
2) I Can Still Make Cheyenne
3) Heartland
4) Love Without End, Amen - a real highlight as George dedicates it to former President Bush.
5) Check Yes Or No
6) The Fireman
7) Run
8) Murder On Music Row - originally a duet with Alan Jackson, George ably handles it solo.
9) The Chair - the crowd really loved this song.
10) She'll Leave You With A Smile
11) Amarillo By Morning - my all-time favorite George Strait song, and an obvious crowd favorite as well.
12) Living and Living Well
13) Take Me Back To Tulsa - I wasn't previously familiar with this Texas swing song, which I think was originally recorded by Bob Wills.
14) Blue Clear Sky
15) The Cowboy Rides Away - a fitting concert end
During the concert, George mentions that he came down with laryngitis before the concert, and his vocals are sometimes a bit below his normal standard. However, the opportunity to see George in his only live DVD is well worth the patchy spots. Former President Bush even presents George with a special award, and George is clearly moved. Overall, this DVD presents a solid and sometimes emotional concert that is likely to please fans of great, traditional country music.

Shawn Trautman is the best dance instructor yet! A great teacher in addition to dancer. I've tried several dance instruction VHS and DVD's (9 in all from Christy Lane, Diane Horner, Teresa Mason, Wiley Hicks, and Cal Pozo), but I didn't stick with them, because they would move so fast that you'd get lost. I would get tired of starting them over and over just trying to pick up the steps. But Shawn makes it so simple to learn, keeping it at a slower pace for the beginner. He also throws in some variations for more challenge. They're so good, I have added 4 of his DVD's to my collection. But his aren't collecting dust like the others.

Green Acres - The Complete First Season (1965-66) (1965) Review

Green Acres - The Complete First Season (1965-66) (1965)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well... I've been waiting for this First Season DVD set ever since I ordered the Columbia House video releases of Green Acres (late 1999-2001). Columbia House chose to release the "best" of Green Acres in no particular order, which was disconcerting to a fan. BUT, this new DVD set is released in broadcast order! It's great to see the development of the characters and it's quite satisfying to see that by the 14th episode ("What Happened in Scranton") all the characters have found their niche.
Some of the episodes have a few film scratches, but they are really minor. The sound is brilliant (no scratches there!) and the color VERY vibrant! I remember watching Green Acres re-runs as a kid, and didn't realize that the hay shoveled by Eddie Albert in the beginning credits was a green color.
Another reviewer mentioned the chemistry between Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor and I must also mention it. Interestingly, upon seeing the two actors names, one would think that Albert and Gabor would have nothing in common and be a disaster, but... something "clicks" between them just right. As the episodes move along, one can see that Eddie and Eva clearly TOTALLY ENJOYED each other and played off each other wonderfully. In fact, watch closely at the conclusion of one of the episodes (I kick myself for not remembering which one), where Eddie and Eva are in bed and Eddie goes to turn off the light (and theoretically conclude the episode). Eva leans over and TICKLES Eddie and he knocks the lamp off the table and he and Eva both laugh in an "out of character" way, all while the scene fades out and the end credits role. You can just see that they had FUN while making these episodes.
The surreal comedy starts to "creep in" to these first season episodes, although it wouldn't be fully explored until later seasons. By "surreal" I mean where the characters "poke fun" at their own show or others similar. One episode starts with Eb milking Eleanor the cow while humming the theme song to the show! Then at the conclusion he "sings" in Eva's voice, "Dahling, I love you but give me Park Avenue!" It's in the later seasons that things like the names of the director and producers appear in the opening credits on Eddie's towel (as he exits the shower), or appear in the darkness in Eddie and Eva's bedroom where she asks him who the names are, etc.
So, watch these episodes... enjoy them. And notice that they are really sophisticated "pokes" at society as we know it. Finally... these episodes (well, the ones halfway through the first season and onward) are REALLY FUNNY! Don't be ashamed to LAUGH OUT LOUD!
Let's hope MGM releases all the other five seasons!

Rascal Flatts Live (DVD & Audio CD) Review

Rascal Flatts Live (DVD and Audio CD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After always having skipped Rascal Flatts for fear of another boy-group in country disguise I recently had the pleasure to see them open for Kenny Chesney and to mildly put it: I was more than impressed!!! I think they almost stole the show with a tight set, that had everything from their hits to ballads to jamming instrumentals to punchy rock'n'noll!
So I decided to get a shot at this CD, which I then found out it is actually a DVD with a full concert ("Melt on the Beach") and an accompanying CD. This is a Live-DVD like no other in country music; matter of fact I guess there is only a hand full of big production concert DVDs (if any at all) available. "Melt on the Beach" has great camera shots, even better music and a wonderful live feel to it. It makes you want to go out and go to their next concert right away.
The CD (although short) holds an excellent live version of "One Good Love" that drags out with playful instrumentals which you rarely get to hear in country music plus the audio version of some tracks from the DVD.
A one-of-a-kind great package that will get you dancing!
P.S.1: I don't understand why there are no other country DVD offerings available like that, when they are all over the place in pop music. Just thinking that none of the great Garth Brooks concerts or videos is available on DVD makes me wonder. Making a concert special definitely is expensive, but packaging existing videos shouldnt be that much of a deal (not one of the great Reba videos is available on DVD to my knowledge)!?
P.S.2: Fortunately this DVD is NOT region code 1, as indicated by Amazon, which being from Europe allows me to watch it too. This brings me to another questionable business aspect: coding Music DVDs with region code 1 means, that only North America (or whatever the detailled region is) is able to play that DVD. And since country music DVDs (such as the Greatest Video Hits by Travis Tritt for instance) are not issued outside of the US mostly, they will forever remain a well hidden secret for the rest of the world (unless you make an illegal copy to strap the region code, which is the only way to watch it all - can we call that promoting illegal copying by record companies!?).

Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose (1980) Review

Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose (1980)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My family and I love Pure Country. It is a simple and pleasurable movie with a predictable but delightful ending. While George Strait is not an A-List actor, he gives a solid performance. Besides, his list of lifetime accomplishments far outweigh most actors 10 fold.
Honeysuckle Rose is just packed with Willie Nelson tunes. While Nelson is also not an A-List actor, Amy Irving and Dyan Cannon certainly fit the bill. I'm partial to "Song For You", a tune Willie sings at the end of the movie. And, practically stealing the show is veteran character actor Slim Pickens, who comically swears with flair making "Honeysuckle" a "sweet" affair.

They're singing the songs...and living them. George Strait already had 25 chart-topping hits when he made his film debut in Pure Country (Side A). He plays Dusty, who ditches his superstar C&W career to rediscover his simple roots...and finds that the simple life can be complex when his manager (Lesley Ann Warren) retaliates. Next, in another savvy, song-filled slice of the performing life, Willie Nelson is On the Road Again for a film that's not autobiographical yet knows its highways and byways well. Dyan Cannon, Amy Irving and Slim Pickens join Nelson in a film that has the knack for providing the right song at the right time. Get on the bus. With Honeysuckle Rose (Side B) marking its DVD Debut, you can't help but go places.

Pure Country (1992) Review

Pure Country (1992)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the video to Pure Country after listening to the soundtrack album. The movie is well-done. George Strait plays Dusty Chandler, a country music superstar who gets tired of the loud sound and overhyped special effects(smoke and strobe lights) in his shows. After an argument with his manager, Lula Rogers(played by Lesley Ann Warren), Dusty says to his best friend, Earl(John Doe), "I'm just gonna take me a little walk," and he does that. He returns to his old hometown, cuts off his beard and ponytail, and tries to get back to his down-home country roots, going first to his Grandma Ivy's house and then to the bar where he once played. After Dusty leaves town, Lula tries to keep his show going at all costs. With some important concert dates coming up, including one in Las Vegas, she hires Buddy(Kyle Chandler), a member of Dusty's road crew, to lip-synch his songs. Most of the band members have doubts, but Lula goes ahead with the plan. The first concert date goes smoothly, and Lula justifies what she does by blaming Dusty for walking out. Lula also hires a private detective and goes off herself to find Dusty.
Meanwhile, Dusty goes to a night club, where he meets the young rancher Harley, the other principal character(played by Isabel Glasser). Harley's boyfriend gets jealous upon seeing her with another guy, and a fight starts. After breaking his rival's nose, Dusty is knocked out in the parking lot and wakes up the next morning. He accepts Harley's offer of breakfast and later finds himself taking roping lessons. Before too long, with the help of Harley and her brothers, he becomes a good roper, and it turns out that his skills are needed. Harley's dad, Ernest(Rory Calhoun), is in danger of losing the ranch, and he is depending on Harley's winning her event at a big rodeo in Las Vegas to stay afloat.
I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but it turns out to be a fairy tale in which things eventually work out well for everyone. Harley wins at the rodeo, saving her ranch. Dusty comes back, patches things up with everybody(except Buddy, whom he gets rid of after learning how much publicity Buddy's lip-synching act has gotten) and puts on a great show in Vegas--minus the ponytail, beard and fancy costume. Lula at long last gives Dusty an emotional apology. And despite Lula's efforts to break up his romance, Dusty gets his girl(Harley) in the end.
Though George is the movie's star, Lesley Ann Warren, in my opinion, steals the show as the crafty Lula. Lula professes to be concerned about Dusty and his band members, but everything she does(using Buddy as a stand-in, hiring a private detective, and following Dusty) shows me that she's really in it for the money. It is only after watching Buddy's TV interview and seeing Harley, who turns out to be Dusty's true love, that Lula breaks down. We're not told much about Dusty and Lula's non-business relationship, although those who saw the movie(including myself) will see, from the barroom photo Dusty looks at, that she played in his band before he got popular and that she was his old girlfriend. John Doe's character, Earl, also plays an important role, though it's a minor one. He reminisces with Dusty about the old days(when they went to the carnival and watched the "dancing chicken"). He defends Dusty against Lula's accusations that he(Dusty) walked out, and, being the loyal friend that he is, he walks out himself and follows Dusty to Harley's ranch.
Director Chris Cain and writer Rex McGee did a very good job on this film. Their failure to develop Dusty and Lula's relationship further is the only flaw in an otherwise fine movie. The acting, though there aren't many well-known actors, is first-rate, and George sings a lot of great tunes, including the hit "I Cross My Heart", on an awesome soundtrack. I think, too, that George, who had never acted before except in TV commercials, does a very convincing job as Dusty. I became a George Strait fan after watching this movie. I think that even those who aren't music fans will like it. It's a great portrayal of country music, and it also is a good slice-of-life movie.

After 25 chart-topping hits, the singing star becomes a movie star!George Strait makes his film debut in an entertaining look into the heart and soul of country music from Young Guns director Christopher Cain.Superstar Dusty Chandler (Strait) is tired of the smoke, the strobe lights and the overmiked sound of his arena spectaculars. One night, something snaps."I'm just going to take a little walk," Dusty says as he walks out of the empty hall, ditching his beard, ponytail - and temporarily, his career - to reclaim his down-home country roots. But his manager (Leslie Ann Warren) retaliates:a stand-in (Kyle Chandler) lip-synchs his songs in concert. And a romance with a lovely rancher (Isabel Glasser) is on again, off again like a rodeo cowboy. The simple life can be complex, but it's nothing a revitalized country boy can't handle!

Urban Cowboy (1980) Review

Urban Cowboy (1980)
Average Reviews:

I played the role of Marshallene in "Urban Cowboy" and so to answer one of your reviewers, what was Sissy's last name? well here is the way it was. We didn't have last names; at least not assigned to us when we got our scripts. I actually made mine up when I needed one quickly in the Dolly Parton Look-a-like contest. You might recall that Marshallene was caught in the trailer with Wes, the convict. This film is such a "cult favorite" that it plays every day somewhere;my residuals attest to the fact that this film is loved by many. It made a fashion statement, (people went out and bought jeans and hats and boot and belts) it gave a boost to the Club business - where more and more C/W clubs sprang up all over the country and Canada. I had a motor coach bus and opened shows for Mickey Gilley and Johnny Lee and others for about 8 years - well into the late 80's. It was a magical time for all of us! It was a fun time for me and for fans. This movie is legendary and will last well beyond. Hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I enjoyed playing in it.By the way, there are a lot of versions of it. The edited for TV version actually is so different - (I have several more scenes in it) - and it shows Sissy and Bud actually"dating" before they got married. The scenes were shot on location on the grass of Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas. I actually like that version because the original had them meeting one night at Gilley's and getting married the next afternoon!!!Connie Hanson
