The Highwaymen - On the Road Again Review

The Highwaymen - On the Road Again

"On the Road Again" is a good video portrait of the Highwaymen. This hour long DVD is as close as most will ever come to a Highwaymen show. The camaraderie and bond between Waylon, Willie, Johnny and Kris is as apparent here as it is invisible on the corresponding album. The sentiment that the group is made up of four ol' friends comes across strongly. Relevant interview fragments are sprinkled between and within songs. Regardless of who your favorite Highwayman may be, the song selection is good as the band plays most of the favorites that one would expect like the Dukes of Hazzard Theme, Folsom Prison Blues, Me and Bobby McGee and Riders in the Sky. The United Kingdom may seem like an odd place for a Highwaymen video concert, but the boys explain their connection with the land and people. While the video production is good, the sound could be better. At times, the audio sounds like an audience recording. "On the Road Again," may be the essential document to showcase the Highwaymen's power, talent and warmth.

Stagecoach (1986) Review

Stagecoach (1986)

Great little gem of a movie starring the outlaws of country music. A lot of people are comparing this tv movie to that of the original starring John Wayne, there is no comparison. The original will always be a classic, and teamed legendary director John Wayne with The Duke.
But, for me it is hard not to like a film that stars Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson. They all do a great job with their roles, and are backed up by a fine supporting cast which includes John Schneider and Elizabeth Ashley.
The film follows the same storyline as the original. Will the stagecoach make it safely to it's destination without meeting its demise at the hands of Geronimo? Will The Ringo Kid get his revenge against the Plummers? How can I find out what will happen? The simple answer is, pick up Stagecoach, and take a trip to the west with The Highwaymen.

Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose (1980) Review

Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose (1980)

My family and I love Pure Country. It is a simple and pleasurable movie with a predictable but delightful ending. While George Strait is not an A-List actor, he gives a solid performance. Besides, his list of lifetime accomplishments far outweigh most actors 10 fold.
Honeysuckle Rose is just packed with Willie Nelson tunes. While Nelson is also not an A-List actor, Amy Irving and Dyan Cannon certainly fit the bill. I'm partial to "Song For You", a tune Willie sings at the end of the movie. And, practically stealing the show is veteran character actor Slim Pickens, who comically swears with flair making "Honeysuckle" a "sweet" affair.

They're singing the songs...and living them. George Strait already had 25 chart-topping hits when he made his film debut in Pure Country (Side A). He plays Dusty, who ditches his superstar C&W career to rediscover his simple roots...and finds that the simple life can be complex when his manager (Lesley Ann Warren) retaliates. Next, in another savvy, song-filled slice of the performing life, Willie Nelson is On the Road Again for a film that's not autobiographical yet knows its highways and byways well. Dyan Cannon, Amy Irving and Slim Pickens join Nelson in a film that has the knack for providing the right song at the right time. Get on the bus. With Honeysuckle Rose (Side B) marking its DVD Debut, you can't help but go places.
