Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell (2003) Review

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell (2003)

This DVD is great, but could've been much better. At only 75 minutes, SNL/NBC are giving a [weak] product. Of course Will Ferrell doesn't disappoint at all on this though. Skits include:
-Behind the Music: Blue Oyster Cult ("more cowbell")
-Spartan Cheerleaders @ a chess match
-"Dissing Your Dog" commercial
-Harry Carey show
-the annoying lovers (with Rachel Dratch)
-the pretentious NYC store clerks (with Jimmy Falon & Sean Hayes)
-the bum as the nude art school model (can't remember his name)
-fishing with Bush Jr & Sr
-Jeopardy with "Burt Reynolds" "French Stewart" and "Sean Connery"
-Robert Goulet does gangsta rap
-Bobby & Marty Culp at the Drug Awareness seminar
-Inside the Actors Studio w/Charles Nelson Riley
-Roxbury guys with Jim Carrey
the extras are pretty cool..especially the deleted skit with the "old prospector." I think that's the funniest thing on the whole DVD. It also has Will's "tryout" with SNL, and 2 Conan O'Brien appearances.
But what is missing is the Neil Diamond Storytellers. I can't believe they left that off. SNL/NBC really could have given everyone a quality product but they just phoned it in.

Will Ferrell may look like the guy next door but there\'s nothing ordinary about his comic creations. From 1995ito 2002 he dominated Saturday Night Live with characters as different as Craig the Cheerleader and President George W. Bush. See the best of Celebrity Jeopardy and Bobbi and Marty Culp along with plenty of yelling near-nudity and more cowbell. Plus there\'s extra material including Will\'s favorite scenes that were cut after Dress Rehearsal and never seen until now.System Requirements: Runnig Time 72 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre:COMEDY Rating:NR UPC:031398841920 Manufacturer No:71092

The Mel Brooks Collection (Blazing Saddles / Young Frankenstein / Silent Movie / Robin Hood: Men in Tights / To Be or Not to Be / History of the World, Part 1 / The Twelve Chairs / High Anxiety) (1974) Review

Most of the movies here are classics which makes it a problem if you don't want all the movies. The version of "Blazing Saddles" is the earlier release from Warner which doesn't look as good as the 30th Anniversary re-release and the extras aren't any great shakes. The transfer looks so-so and lacks the sharper look of the later 30th Anniversary Edition. "Young Frankenstein" resembles the first DVD release of the film from Fox with the same extras. Reportedly "Young Frankenstein" was supposed to be remastered in anamorphic widescreen but the wrong master used or the wrong discs shipped with this set. For those that care it's not anamorphic. The film looks extremely good but if you already have these classic films, I'd suggest waiting for these to be released individually.
Fans of Brooks will be buying this for the previously unreleased films "Silent Movie", "Robin Hood:Men in Tights", "To Be or Not to Be" (which Brooks didn't direct but stars in) and "High Anxiety". All these films look pretty good here (although "The Twelve Chairs" is probably going to be of the least interest to fans that grew up on Brooks other classic films). "Robin Hood" comes with an featurette produced for HBO on the film. Most of the others come only with theatrical trailer(s). "To Be or Not To Be" comes with a short featurette and some profiles of Brooks, the late Anne Bancroft and Charles Durning. Clearly they weren't produced for the DVD but must be some sort of promotional bits for another format (you're guess is as good as mine)possibly for an Electtronic Press Book.
If you have problems with any of the discs you can contact Fox at their customer service phone number 1-888-223-2FOX.

The Complete James Dean Collection (East of Eden / Giant / Rebel Without a Cause Special Edition) (1955) Review

The Complete James Dean Collection (East of Eden / Giant / Rebel Without a Cause Special Edition) (1955)

I've anxiously anticipated this collection of James Dean's films, together in a complete set. Each of the films is presented in a two-disc package, with extras.
"East of Eden" is, for me, the most welcome film in this set, simply because it has been so difficult to obtain a copy of it in recent years. The anamorphic transfer here is stunning, with crisp color and detail. The stereo soundtrack is fine. There is an audio commentary, as well as a wealth of bonus materials. Some of the material here includes screen tests, and wardrobe tests, although strangely some footage included briefly in the included documentaries (Dean's test with Paul Newman, the playful "pinching" footage of Dean and Julie Harris) is not included here.
"Rebel Without a Cause", like "Eden" offers a stunning anamorphic transfer with strong surround sound. The extras include a commentary, deleted scenes for the film (both in the original black and white, and the final color version), and screen tests. There is a very funny and insightful screen test here with Dean, Mineo and Wood. The previous DVD release of this film had only shown portions of this clip, but this release offers the full (some may say 'uncensored') version. There is also a documentary reflecting on Dean's spectacular, but brief career.
Dean's final film, "Giant" is featured here in a very clean, but oddly NOT-anamorphic transfer. This would not be an issue, if the film was not presented in a letterbox transfer. I would imagine this is the same transfer that was done several years back. However, I don't think it's acceptable that any recent widescreen DVD release not be presented in an anamorphic transfer. Additionally, the film's soundtrack has been remastered in a 5.1 mix, that sounds weak at best. I would have preferred to have seen this film released in it's original full-frame image, with a clean mono soundtrack. That aside, there is a wealth of extras here.
All in all, a very nice set, not totally perfect, but the best to date, by far.

Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose (1980) Review

Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose (1980)

My family and I love Pure Country. It is a simple and pleasurable movie with a predictable but delightful ending. While George Strait is not an A-List actor, he gives a solid performance. Besides, his list of lifetime accomplishments far outweigh most actors 10 fold.
Honeysuckle Rose is just packed with Willie Nelson tunes. While Nelson is also not an A-List actor, Amy Irving and Dyan Cannon certainly fit the bill. I'm partial to "Song For You", a tune Willie sings at the end of the movie. And, practically stealing the show is veteran character actor Slim Pickens, who comically swears with flair making "Honeysuckle" a "sweet" affair.

They're singing the songs...and living them. George Strait already had 25 chart-topping hits when he made his film debut in Pure Country (Side A). He plays Dusty, who ditches his superstar C&W career to rediscover his simple roots...and finds that the simple life can be complex when his manager (Lesley Ann Warren) retaliates. Next, in another savvy, song-filled slice of the performing life, Willie Nelson is On the Road Again for a film that's not autobiographical yet knows its highways and byways well. Dyan Cannon, Amy Irving and Slim Pickens join Nelson in a film that has the knack for providing the right song at the right time. Get on the bus. With Honeysuckle Rose (Side B) marking its DVD Debut, you can't help but go places.
