(More customer reviews)Is 'Kenny Vs. Spenny' the greatest television show in the history of television? Probably. Is Kenny Hotz one of the most interesting people in the world? Yep. Does Spencer Rice deserve the constant humiliation he is subject to? Absolutely.
The show's concept is basically this: two Canadian best friends challenge each other to various competitions. The winner of said competition gets to humilate the other. Its a fairly simple premise that allows the two friends to try and outdo one another in anyway they can think of. First, we have Kenny Hotz: deviant mastermind who loves video games, not bathing, and going to any lengths to destroy his best friend, Spenny. Secondly, we have Spencer 'Spenny' Rice: a neurotic, by-the-book goon who deserves to lose. And lose he does.
While all 24 episodes are hysterical, some of the highlights of season one are: 'Who Can Gain The Most Weight?', 'Who Is The Better Boxer?', 'Who Is Saner?', and 'Who Can Live In A Van The Longest?'.
This set contains 24 episdoes of the first season of the show. Watch as Kenny humiliates Spenny...you will love it. Guaranteed. 'Kenny Vs. Spenny' is probably the funniest television show in the history of the world.

Season 3

1.The Invasion - When Ray's house is tented for termites, he moves his entire family into his parent's house and gives Frank and Marie a taste of their own medicine.
2.Driving Frank - After Frank has one accident too many, Debra decides that the kids can't ride with him anymore, which makes Raymond realize that his dad is getting older.
3.The Sitter - Debra decides to hire a babysitter so she hires Lisa. When Marie finds out that she wasn't asked to baby-sit she feels insulted and Debra feels left out when the kids prefer Lisa to her.
4.Getting Even -After embarrassing Debra at an auction she vows to get even with Ray but doesn't tell him when. This drives him crazy and leads him to believe that everything she does is to get even at him.
5.The Visit - When Debra's mother comes to visit the family for a week, Debra finds herself shocked to discover that she wishes her mom were more like Marie.
6.Halloween Candy - After Debra suggests that she might be more consistently romantic if she weren't in charge of the birth control, Ray decides to make the drastic move of "cutting the wires."
7.Moving Out - Feeling pathetic because he lives with his parents, Robert finally musters up the courage to move out on his own.
8.The Article - Ray is jealous of Andy who's article is published by "Sports Illustrated".
9.The Lone Barone -When Robert and Amy break up Raymond is blamed by everyone because of some bad things he told Robert about marriage.
10. No Fat - When Marie and Frank get some test results back they find out that they're not as healthy as they thought. So Marie throws out all the unhealthy food and makes Frank go on a diet with her.
11. The Apartment - Ray feels jealous of Robert when he visits his new apartment and sees that it's filled with beautiful women.
12. The Toaster - Ray is overjoyed by the reaction he is getting from friends and family who received a personalized "Barone" toaster from him as a gift.
13. Ping Pong - When Ray finds out that his father let him win a game of ping pong when he was twelve he challenges him to a game.
14. Pants On Fire - Marie starts to favor Robert when Ray admits to having a party 20 years ago.
15. Robert's Date - Robert's entire demeanor changes when he starts clubbing with his patrol partner, Judy, and her friends.
16. Frank's Tribute - When Frank wins "Man of the Year" at his lodge Ray and Robert are asked to make a video tribute about Frank.
17. Cruising with Marie - Frank fakes an injury so he won't have to go on a cruise with Marie. Ray ends up going and gets mistaken for her lover.
18. Ray Home Alone - Debra brings the kids to her parent's house and Ray stays home alone.
19. Big Shots - Trying to impress Robert when they visit the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Ray uses his "weight" as a sports writer for Newsday to jump to the front of the line to meet the members of the 1969 New York Mets.
20. Move Over - When Ray confides to Debra that her constant need to cuddle is causing him too many sleepless nights, Debra is more than happy to comply with his request to give him his space in bed.
21. The Getaway - Debra and Ray feel tremendous pressure to show each other a good time on a romantic weekend getaway in Vermont.
22. Working Girl - When Debra gets a job Ray isn't too happy because it means he has to help around the house.
23. Be Nice - When Ray and Debra realize they're nicer to strangers than to each other they vow to change their ways.
24. Dancing with Debra - After Ray urges Debra to go swing dancing with Robert to let himself off the hook, he can't believe how infatuated the two become with their new hobby.
25. Robert Moves Back - When Robert and Amy get caught being intimate by some of Robert's fellow apartment tenants, they are desperate to find someplace, any place, where they can have some time to themselves.

I bought this DVD for my girl for Christmas and she could not have been any happier, she is absolutely in love with Bam. So it was a big hit with her which made me a big hit with her, nice. Any way I watched this with her that night which was ok because I am a fan of Bam and all them so it was cool. It has been a while since anything new has come out from these guys so I was excited to watch it, I knew it would good.
The movie is all about Bam and company taking a trip to the Arctic Circle some where in Finland trying to find the real Santa Claus. Apparently the only thing left for Bam to get his wife Missy since she has everything she could possibly want he decides that the real Santa is the only logical gift. Accompanying him on this trip is his brother Jess and Chad I. Ginsburg from CKY, Mark Hanna, Joe Frantz, and a personal favorite of mine Brandon Novak. Back at home Missy and Bam's parents have to put up with not only two members of The Bloodhound Gang [including the ever funny Jimmy Pop] but also S***Goose, and Mark the Bagger. One of the main driving points behind this film is the two bets that are going down with the Bagger, one with Novak and one with Bam. With Novak is a bet to see who can get the most girls, and with Bam it is whether or not the real Santa is in Finland. The prize for the Bagger against Novak is a sexy robot and with Bam it is none other then Bam's wife Missy, yes he bets her.
In Finland the boys harass each other and by that I mean mostly Bam messing with Novak pretty hard, I feel so bad for this guy all through the entire film. Also along the way they decide that they need a map so Hanna is volunteered to get a horrible map tattooed on his stomach. Of course it would not be a Bam related film if HIM is not involved some how, so while in Finland they stop of at HIM's rehearsal studio to get directions and advice and also film a performance. Also the 69 Eyes and a few other bands pop up every now and then, but it is the appearance of the Dudesons that excites me. These guys are crazy beyond words and I love that they do not just cameo they are threw out the entire film. These guys just add a whole new dimension to the movie and even are involved in one of the grossest parts of the movie. All I am going to say is it involves eye balls, Novak and a male's part [if you know what I mean] from a dead animal.
Back in the states Missy and Bam's parents are hard at work at working on a huge surprise party for Bam, while the B.H. Gang and the Bagger are out looking for girls. The girl hunting parts are hilarious, especially when Jimmy Pop dresses up as Bam and gives the Bagger the worst advice on getting girls ever. Of course when they finally get some girls to come back to castle Bam with them two very funny players from Bam's new movie "MINGHAGS" show up, classic moment. Mean while back in Finland all the guys have to hike, travel by dog sled, reindeer, and snow mobile to reach Santa's house only to find Santa is on vacation. Do they ever find him before they head home, you will have to watch and see but there is a nice party waiting for them when they return home and all ends well {sort of} for Novak eventually. He even gets one over on Bam; excellent moment indeed [well played sir, well played].
Bam as always is his usual jerk yet funny self all through out this entire movie, as is Jimmy Pop and the Bagger [the funny part not jerk]. Chad and Jess are great as well, great to see those guys in this [OVER HERE], you will get that once you watch it. Hanna and Frantz as expected are just as funny as the rest; still Hanna's best thing was his over the top laugh on "Haggard". Everyone else in the movie is great but the show stealer is definitely Novak {who is the star, and rightfully so} with out a doubt, he is this movie's Dico I guess you could say. And of course you know the Dudesons are hilarious only adding nothing but laughs, poor Novak he hates these guys. And yes people this is a movie, a thought out written down in screenplay format movie based in reality. Bam, Frantz, and Joe De Vito wrote a hilarious film and Bam and De Vito's direction is seamless, Bam also serves not only as a producer but as an Executive producer as well.
This movie is worth every penny in my opinion and is beyond a rental, I suggest you buy this because it truly is a funny movie. If you liked Jackass, Viva La Bam, CKY, and especially Haggard then you will love this. And sure Dico, Dunn, Rake, and Raab are nowhere to be found on this DVD, but those who are make this hilarious. And who knows maybe in the future all of them will eventually work together again, maybe a "Where the #### are those guys" will be in the works. Still you can catch all those guys plus all these guys in "Minghags".

Ugly Betty: The Complete Second Season Review

All in all, Season Two of UGLY BETTY was, like Season One, an utter delight. It certainly was not timid in its story telling, trying to keep true to its roots in telemundo by pushing storylines that beggared credibility, sometimes perhaps crossing the lines of believability, but all in all having a lot of fun.
There were too many plotlines to attempt any summarization, but suffice it to say that if you didn't care for one - and there were some that I definitely didn't care for (primarily Wilhelmina's theft of Bradford Meade's sperm upon his death and then having Christina carry Bradford and Wilhelmina's baby, though secondarily the storyline of having Gene Simmons temporarily feature as Amanda's supposed biological father [like most people I've talked to, I just find anything having to do with Gene Simmons to be more than a little distasteful]) - just wait a week or two and you'd find others you might like instead. That said, the one arc that extended the length of the season was the two men in Betty's life: Henry, who she loves and with whom she continues a romance that is fated to end as soon as his ex-girlfriend Charlie gives birth to their child, and Gio, who is deeply attracted to Betty and tries to engage her interest even while she remains with Henry. Both Christopher Gorham who plays Henry (who I previously loved in JAKE 2.0) and Freddy Rodriguez (who I loved in SIX FEET UNDER) do a great job of making both of their characters really interesting. I found myself wanting Betty to be happy with both of them, though obviously she could only end up with one.
But to be honest, the real appeal of the show lies less in the story arcs, which while good are not particularly outstanding, than in the fine ensemble cast and the great collection of characters. I perpetually found myself less than riveted by what was happening than in whom it was happening to. Ultimately, I think that might be the show's weakness. With its roots in telemundo, the show has an indelible and inescapable frivolity. By its very nature, it lacks any potential to become much more than a nice way to pass time. That being said, it is time that I do enjoy passing.
I am extremely anxious, however, about the show's future. Season Three is going to feature some absolutely massive changes to the show. Shortly after filming concluded on Season Two it was announced that the production was going to relocate to New York City. At the same time it was leaked that Rebecca Romjin, who has been delightful as Daniel's sister/former brother Alexis/Alex, was going to have a greatly lessened involvement in the series in Season Three. To make matters worse, there were rumors that some actors were unwilling to move to New York full time and might have their character's become less central to the story. The most worrying of these is Eric Mabius, who has young children and a home in L.A. After Betty his Daniel Meade is easily one of the most important characters on the show. Having him on less than a full time basis could significantly change the entire texture of the show, and I suspect not for the better. Also, while I believe having the show filmed in the actual city where the action is supposed to take place (though I suspect that the neighborhood in which Betty's house is supposed to be located will continue to be CGI) will be a great boon for the show, I fear that the changes could give it a very different feel from the first two seasons. This could very easily cease to be the show that we've all known and loved.
Fearful or not, I will try to be optimistic. Hopefully the cast will remain more or less intact with the move to New York. I will also hope that the producers reconsider the lessened role for Rebecca Romjin and that Eric Mabius stays with the show fulltime. And I hope that having the possibility of on location shots in New York outweighs any disruption leaving L.A. creates. Season Two ended, as with Season One, with some major cliffhangers, but this year not all of the anticipation was created by the story. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the show remains as much fun as it has been in the past.

The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus Collector's Edition Megaset Review

(More customer reviews)I just couldn't bring myself to give this set 5 stars. I wish it were possible to give it 4 1/2 stars.
First of all, it's true, the episodes are not 100% complete, however, many people, in my opinion, have been over-reacting about the cuts. Actually, the A&E DVD #1 has a sketch in the 2nd episode called 'The Wacky Queen', which was edited out of the show after the first broadcast & was never shown again on TV in the UK or abroad, as far as I know. Seasons 1 & 2 have no cuts, at least none that I spotted when comparing the DVDs to the synopsis in the Monty Python books by Jim Yoakum & Kim "Howard" Johnson. There is a slight edit of one word in the 5th episode of the 3rd season during the 'Summarize Proust Competition' which the BBC made to the episode before broadcast. Broadcasts outside of the UK had the uncensored version of the sketch. Unfortunately, A&E got a censored master. In the 7th episode of the same season during the 'Biggles Dictates a Letter' sketch, there is a slight glitch which can be blamed on slopply mastering on A&E's part. It doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the sketch very much. The episode that appears to be worst hit is the 12th episode of season 3. A&E goofed when they included 'Party Political Broadcast' on the box to this episode. The sketch was edited from the master tape and hasn't been seen since the original broadcast in 1973. This material is very probably lost forever. The very end of this episode, which has a trailer for Dad's Doctors & Dad's Pooves, is also missing from the episode. This was probably sloppy editing on the part of A&E video as the episode does a fade to black with the BBC TV logo then fades up again with the BBC TV logo again and the 'Dad's...' trailer. The person transfering the episode, who probably had no familiarity with Python thought that it wasn't part of the episode or something. A&E should have hired one of the US Python experts like Kim 'Howard' Johnson, Jim Yoakum, or David Morgan to oversee the A&E transfers so these mistakes might have been prevented. As far as I know, the cuts I just mentioned are the only ones that have been made to these DVDs. Not that much, in my opinion. Certainly not enough to bring this set all the way down to one star. Some have also complained that this set didn't include the German episodes 'Monty Python's Fliegender Zirkus'. These episodes were produced for German TV & not for BBC TV. In fact, the 1st one, which was done in German, was never shown on British TV. This set does contain all 45 episodes that were produced for BBC television. A&E has released the 2 German episodes. The first one, in German with English subtitles, is in the set 'Monty Python Live' and the second one, shot in and in English, is in the 'Life of Python' set.
Yes, yes, the quality of the picture and sound is not perfect, but still better than any TV broadcast that I've seen. I suspect that the quality of the shows as broadcast wasn't terribly impressive. BBC Television only started broadcasting in color in 1969 (the year Python started) and it was still new technology to them. The sound is Mono. The BBC didn't go to Stereo until 1988! To do some kind of stereo remaster, one would need access to seperate dialogue, sound effect, and music tracks, which I'm sure don't exist with the Pythons or the BBC. Such a thing did exist for Holy Grail, which is why Columbia was able to do a remastered Stereo soundtrack. Furthermore, each show had a budget of $6000. These shows were done on a shoestring and the BBC probably didn't have state of the art equipment, being a Government funded broadcaster.
I love Monty Python, and these 45 shows changed the face of comedy. There are a few, very few, bits missing.
If you love Python, you should buy it. Some fans have over-reacted way too much about the missing material. If something like the Lumberjack Song, or Parrot sketch, or Cheese Shop, or Nudge Nudge were cut, that would be reason for outrage. Not for the few fairly minor missing bits. Over 24 hours of pure fun.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Volume One (2000) Review

It's so absurd a premise and so beyond the pale of most cartoon series out there these days, that it has infinite appeal to both my sixteen year old son and to me. Our dynamic trio and their next door Jersey neighbor, the tank top wearing Carl, are the funniest toon characters in Television land. That's saying a lot as television is currently witnessing a true renaissance of cartoon humor.
The creators are the same crew that brought us the equally silly, but cutting edge SPACEGHOST COAST TO COAST. The same sort of hip, off colour humor that informed that show is at play here, only more so. My favorite segment involves a manic depressive, deadbeat, suicidal doll who has a negative, lifeforce-draining impact on all who come in contact with him. Other highlights include a pair of aliens who look as if they've escaped from some crude '70s Atari game. The punk talking little alien, err, is particularly amusing.
Of the three main characters, my favorite is Meatwad, the mush mouthed, single toothed meatball, whose speech is almost unintelligble, but who is delightfully, stupidly impressionable.
If you're in the mood for some absolutely mindless, but hysterically hip comic relief, give this DVD set a try. The extras aren't that much to write home about, but no contemporary toon buff should be without this two disc set in his/her collection.
If you have a sensibilty that is as warped as mine is, and you enjoy The Simpsons, South Park, Beavis and Butthead, The Family Guy, etc., I'm certain that you will enjoy this anti-superhero trio.

Black Adder: The Complete Collector's Set Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a big fan of British comedy and consider Black Adder to be the greatest of them all, and that's saying something. The British have produced some great ones: Benny Hill, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf, Ab Fab - and those are just the most famous titles. There are numerous other great shows out there, yet Black Adder is a cut above them all. It's very witty, hilarious, and expects the viewer to have knowledge of British history.
This set includes just about everything (there are bits and pieces not on the five discs). Let's review all of them.
Black Adder I is set at the end of the 15th Century and is based on the premise that Henry Tudor was a liar, that Richard III was a good King and was succeeded by his nephew, who became Richard IV. The first series is the weakest of the lot, though it is still quite good and contains two of the entire series best shows. The first two episodes (The Foretelling and Born to be King) are funny, but do not contain the side-splitting laughs common to the series. The show really hits its stride in the third episode, The Archbishop, one of the funniest episodes of the entire series. The success continues through the fourth and fifth episodes (The Queen of Spain's Beard and Witchsmeller Pursuivant), though the show dips in the final episode a bit. Brian Blessed is terrific, though can be a bit much at times. Tim McInnerny and Tony Robinson do great jobs, as they would throughout the series.
Black Adder II is set in Elizabethan times. Many would claim it to be the funniest of the four series, and that argument can most definitely be made. I, however, think that each successive series gets better. Every episode in the second series is a winner; every single episode is a stand out. Miranda Richardson is terrific as Queenie and Stephen Fry is smashing as Melchett. I honestly can't pick any favorites the rest of the way through. The second disc also contains Black Adder: The Cavalier Years which is also excellent, though short. It was done for Comic Relief and is set in the last days of Charles I (Stephen Fry was excellent in this role).
Black Adder the Third improves upon its predecessor. Hugh Laurie takes up permanent residence in the cast (he guest starred in the final episode of series 2) and does a brilliant job - better than McInnery did as the dimwitted Percy. Laurie plays the Prince of Wales, George - son of the infamous Mad King George. This Black Adder is no longer a Lord or Prince of the realm like his ancestors, he is now a servant. Once again, each episode is a gem. We also see McInnerny and Fry in guest appearances (Fry shines as the Duke of Wellington in the final episode), as well as Robbie Coltrane (now of Harry Potter fame as Hagrid). This disc also features Black Adder's Christmas Carol. Though funny, it jumps around quite a bit. the twist is that it features the lone good Black Adder. Don't want to give away too much here. It's funny but not as focused as the whole series.
Black Adder Goes Forth is the final entry. It is the most crass of all the series and the darkest. I find it to be the funniest as well. There's a lot more toilet humor and Baldrick, who has gotten progressively stupider as the series has gone on, is hilarious. Tim McInnerny is back, though not as Percy but as Darling. The Darling jokes do get a bit old, but Stephen Fry as Melchett is excellent.
The fifth disc contains Black Adder Back and Forth. This suffers from the same problem as Christmas Carol, it's unfocused and not as sharp as the series shows. It does have its moments, but Black Adder functions best when it remains in one period and established the characters.
Throughout the whole series, Rowan Atkinson is superb. He is the greatest comedic actor in Britain at the moment and hysterical to watch. Each Black Adder is a bit different, beginning with the whimpering Edmund Blackadder in series one to the very sharp and intelligent Edmund of the last series. Edmund gets sharper as the series gets on -and the character get more bitter as well.
These DVDs also have some helpers for those not familiar with the history of the time periods depicted. I would, however, advise those unfamiliar with the periods to do some research into the history of the time so they can get a better understanding of many of the jokes.
All in all, a great package of one of the greatest comedies every produced. Hours of enjoyment can be found here with plenty of replay value.

(More customer reviews)Let me first state that I love, worship, and adore Weird Al. I went through a great deal of trouble to get VHS copies of this show off the internet, and remember being simultaneously joyous and disappointed by the incredibly uneven show that resulted. While on the one hand, hey, it's Weird Al, on the other, it was painfully obvious where the hand of the network was tooling our friend around. I noticed that the wonderful person I knew was, in the show, an unlovable jerk who constantly screwed over his friends who strangely kept coming over anyway. I noticed the lessons were often weak, contradictory, or a lie. And yet, there were the shining spots - the rare Fatman cartoons, the home movies, the riotously funny phony educational films, Fred Huggins, the brief song parodies sprinkled in. Basically, any moment where Al wasn't getting stomped on by a network censor and allowed to just be himself is pure gold.
Then a funny thing happened - this DVD came out and every episode had a commentary track from the director, the head writer, and oh yea, Weird Al. And I learned that not only were they aware of every single thing I noticed that was wrong with this show, they hated it as much as I did. They mercilessly assault their own program and take no prisoners. The network censors, the educational mandates, the lost sketches, the ridiculous changes...they list them and lambast them all. It proves that Al's excellent UHF commentary was not a fluke - he's very good at keeping these amusing. There's a few guest stars from his close personal friends, but the real highlight is how savagely Al attacks his own program and the difficult working environment that his show was filmed in. And ss one last snub, material such as bloopers and cut scenes are not included because Dick Clark Productions threw out everything except for the master tapes themselves.
This show belongs on every Weird Al fan's shelf - for the commentary, and to remember the few sparkling moments when this show shined inspite of the network's desperate attempts to snuff it out.

(More customer reviews)If you enjoy 2 hours of Kevin Costner acting like a slob and 2 minutes (at the very end) of his heroic customary speeches in which his voice cracks down while defending his less fortunate fellow men, well, this is the movie for you. Personally I found this very similar to ARTHUR in which the prospect of watching the part of a stupid drunk for a long time gets more and more annoying. I also had a hard time buying his wholesome daughter and after watching her Mom and Dad it becomes impossible to understand how she could turn out that wonderful. The movie itself is all one clever idea with very mediocre dialogue, flat jokes and lacking any surprises.

(More customer reviews)In retrospect, the 2006-2007 television season debuted an unusually large number of first rate new series: HEROES, MEN IN TREES, 30 ROCK, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, DEXTER, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, and UGLY BETTY. That is a remarkably strong group of new shows. UGLY BETTY occupied a unique niche among them. The new show it most resembled was MEN IN TREES. Both were light fare, intended to entertain and charm rather than challenge and rattle. It was unorthodox, but in comforting ways. It was, basically, a very nice show. One never came away from any episode shocked or dismayed as with the best episodes of DEXTER or FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, but to tell the truth, after a week of watching my favorite shows on TV--BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, LOST, DEXTER, and others that were sometimes exceedingly emotional affairs to watch, I found it a refreshing change of pace, never shocking, never emotionally taxing, never intellectually demanding. It managed always to be smart while also very easy to absorb. Most of all, it was great fun.
The plot was simple. Betty Suarez desires a job in publishing. After she applies at MODE magazine, where she has a disastrous interview, she finds herself mysterious hired as assistant to editor Daniel Meade, playboy son of Meade Publishing owner Bradford Meade. It turns out that Bradford had seen her leaving the building and ordered her hired for his son simply because she is as far from a fashion model in appearance as can be imagined. She has terrible hair, dresses horridly, has garish braces, thick glasses (and eyebrows), and carries more weight than your standard attractive woman. Father makes her employment mandatory for his rare-do-well son. Very quickly, however, she proves herself not merely necessary for Daniel's professional life, but a good friend as well. One of the most attractive aspects of the show is, in fact, their genuinely caring, completely platonic, friendship. Working at MODE pulls Betty into a world of interoffice intrigue and political infighting. To be honest, I could have lived without any of the stories. The appeal was just about 100% based on a large number of likable and adorable characters popping up each week.
America Ferrera, who had previously been amazingly effective in the cult-hit film REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES and the teen chick flick THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (a sequel to the latter is due in 2008), simply steals this show as Betty. Though not a slender actress, America in fact has a beautiful face. They do a great make up job on her, however, putting a terrible wig on her each week (with very stressed looking hair), gluing thick, fake eyebrows on her, giving her thick-framed, brightly colored glasses, fake braces, make up to give her an unpleasant complexion, and an incredibly unflattering set of clothes. Despite this dramatic transformation each week, Betty manages to be utterly charming and adorable. A couple of people I've talked to feel it is a bit of a cheat to have an attractive woman play someone who is supposed to be "ugly," but I think it would be a bit cruel to take an unattractive person and have them play such a role. I would be surprised if she does not get an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy. Lauren Graham deserves to win in this category (as she does every year) for her genius work in THE GILMORE GIRLS, but since the Emmys year after year have ignored Graham (her show is on the wrong network), I will probably be pulling for America to win.
Ferrera is supported by an amazingly strong cast. Eric Mabius is wonderful as Daniel, consistently showing himself to be a decent guy despite his efforts to transform himself into a waste of humanity. I think there is a secret contract someone dictating that Alan Dale appear in every other show on TV in some capacity or other. He is his usual stern self as Bradford Meade (he also has a very occasional but ongoing role in LOST, the only show I've seen him on where he gets to use something like is native Kiwi accent). Vanessa Williams is a lot of fun as the scheming and unscrupulous Wilhelmina Slater, the fashion editor at MODE who would love to be the editor in chief. Ashley Jensen, who really is Scottish, plays the head of wardrobe at MODE and one of Betty's few friends at the magazine. But the people at MODE who make the show worth watching are Michael Urie and Becki Newton, who play Marc and Amanda, Wilhelmina's gay assistant and the mildly sluttish receptionist, both of them for most of the season Betty's mortal enemies (though by end of season she was making headway with both of them as friends, in particular Marc, inspiring him to come out to his mother). There is also Henry, winningly played by Christopher Gorham. He had previously played the title role in JAKE 2.0, on which UGLY BETTY executive producer Silvio Horta also worked. I suspect his appearing on UGLY BETTY has something to do with that connection. Gorham is a very good-looking guy who is somehow able to pull off completely nerdy guys, in this show an accountant.
But there is more than just the office. There is Betty's home life. Veteran character actor Tony Plana plays Betty's illegal immigrant father (one of the subplots deals with his attempt to get a green card). He is one of these actors who has appeared in literally hundreds of TV shows and movies, but has rarely had an especially prominent role. You love to see fine actors who have paid their dues get a great role like this one. Ana Ortiz is hysterical as Betty's garish sister Hilda, but the person who steals nearly every scene in the Suarez household is twelve-year old Mark Indelicato, who plays Betty's nephew Justin. We don't know that Justin is gay, but his effeminate swagger, his deep love of stage musicals, and his encyclopedic knowledge of fashion marks him with all of the stereotypes.
This show is too smart to be a guilty pleasure, but it is just as much fun as one. It doesn't go on my list of my absolute favorite shows. It isn't as sophisticated or as intelligent as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, as engrossing as LOST, a fist-in-the-gut like DEXTER or THE WIRE, or as original or jaw-droppingly brilliant as BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, but sometimes you just aren't in the mood for something as heavy as these shows. Sometimes you just want to have a good time and relax. I promise there are few shows on television more perfect for that than this.

Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set Review

Basically, they have taken an all-time favorite anime .. given it a digital remastering, along with Dolby 5.1 Japanese tracks (subtitled wonderfully I might add), along with a great job on the English dubbing, all 13 OVA Episodes, an interactive encyclopedia for Tenchi Fanatics and an unbeatable price. The animation is beautiful in the DVD format and extremely clear, which brings vibrant new life into this anime classic. Pretty much I would recommend this to any anime fan who hasn't seen the series yet (you really have no idea what you're missing out on!) or any Tenchi fan who would like to see this series in its ideal format. If you are new to the anime DVD scene like I am, make sure you put this set on your list of "to buy" collections ^_^ You won't be disapointed!

Shaolin Soccer Review

(More customer reviews)I had heard about Shaolin Soccer (2001) a couple of years ago from a friend, as he had recommended it to me, knowing the particular way some of my tastes ran, and I am glad he did, as it's a heady mix of the wacky, the absurd, and the just plain fun. The movie starts off with a flashback, showing an extremely popular Chinese soccer player named Golden Leg Fung accepting money to throw a game from a lackey, and the consequences of his actions, including a severely crippling beating by the crowd after purposely missing a rather easy goal scoring opportunity. Now, it's many years later, and Fung now works for the gangster organization that had originally paid him off, in a completely demeaning position. He dreams of coaching, but the once lackey who owns the current champion soccer team and is also chairman of the league, finds this notion completely humorous, and heap further degradations upon Fung. Despondent, Fung ends up meeting a vagabond/shaolin follower called Steel Leg, and formulates a plan to build a new soccer team around this exceptional martial artist. Fung also finds out Steel Leg has enough brothers, all once trained in martial arts, to make up a team. Each brother has their own, unique ability, and soon they begin to practice. During their first practice, the men suffer a fairly brutal beating (this whole pain, beating, and humiliation factor seems to be a constant theme throughout), but soon find their shaolin training coming back to them, and turn the tables on their opponents. They enter the tournament, sweeping through the ranks, until finally the meet with the current champions, the Evil Team (I'm not kidding, that's their name), and meet the ultimate challenge, as the chairman gives his team a decidedly unfair advantage. Will the shaolin players be victorious, or will they suffer the crushing defeat at the hands of the chairman and his evil team?
The special effects here are truly amazing and inventive, making for the most insane soccer playing I've ever seen. Imagine someone being able to kick a soccer ball with the same force of shooting it out of a cannon, and with pinpoint accuracy. There is not really a lot of actual soccer playing, in the traditional sense, as with the abilities of the players, the ball mainly zooms around in a very cartoonish manner. Mixing kung fu and soccer is certainly and interesting concept, and provides some really spectacular visuals. The English captioning is really bad, but certainly gave me much to laugh about, along with the seriously outlandish overacting.
Special features include an option to watch the film with the deleted scenes, the deleted scenes by themselves, a trailer, biographies, a featurette on the making of the film, a photo gallery, and behind the scenes featurette on how the special effects were made. All in all, Shaolin Soccer is an unsane, over the top comedy steeped in outrageous action and definitely worth a look if you care to expand your horizons.

American Hustle is a meshing of a cinematic intro with the side-splitting comedy of Katt Williams and company. The feature starts with Katt getting ready for a important Hollywood meeting to discuss movie possibilities starring the up-and-coming superstar. He ultimately passes on the ridiculous movie pitches and ventures out back on the road with fellow comics Red, Luenell, and Melanie Camacho. The four comics and Katt's dog hit the road for 20-city, 40-show tour that eventually culminates to the final show in Chicago. And it is at this point that viewers are treated to the feature-length concert footage of Katt Williams. The DVD closes with Katt Williams sharing the stage and the mic with Chi-Town's own Da Brat and everybody's favorite honorary pimp Snoop Dogg.
Packaged as a theatrical comedy, American Hustle evolves mostly around Katt's stand-up, a routine that can basically be deemed Pimp Chronicles 2. The material is original and will have you laughing out loud. Although we are treated to a handful of stand-up scenes from Red, Luenell, and Melanie, it would have been nice to actually see more of their routine, if not their entire sets. But the material that we are treated to is nothing short of hilarious, with Luenell giving the funniest anecdotes of the three. And of course Katt's spin on life, love, and relationships is on par with everything else that the budding star has showcased, including its predecessor The Pimp Chronicles Part 1. With extended footage of the skit 'Brokebeak Penguins', and his spoof on the movie 300, and about a dozen outtakes, this DVD is unique in its presentation and captures the ingenious comedic styling of Katt Williams. Any fan of Katt Williams will not be disappointed with American Hustle.

(More customer reviews)He skillfully tricks you into believing he's just your average comedian whose performance is ridden with cliche narratives of the American cultural landscape. But you'll soon find you've been fooled. I find the more aware a comedian, the better he is. He must take risks with the audience. Sometimes he must trust that his audience is not vanilla but again we're not sick pervs either. With awareness of this, Giraldo is able to become several great comedians at once with material that is crude (Stanhope) and political (Maher, Stewart). He also does numerous pieces that make fun of our use of language, reminiscent of the late Carlin. Nevertheless Giraldo is not just a mish-mesh of other comedians, he masterly weaves everything in a special way. Each joke is not random, he's telling a story that hopefully should vibrate with the younger generations.

Psych: The Complete Second Season Review

(More customer reviews)Without a doubt, Shawn Spencer is the public's favorite fake fictional psychic detective. Of course as far as I know, he's also the only one.
But that doesn't stop the second season of "Psych" from being a rollicking good time, full of crazy schemes and baffling murder mysteries. James Roday and Dulé Hill actually become even more entertaining, with less slapstick and more of a reliance on eccentric plot twists, pop culture references, and crimes that get ever weirder.
Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Hill) get swamped by reality pop culture when American Duos comes to Santa Barbara. The cruel British judge Nigel St. Nigel (Tim Curry) hires them to protect him, because he thinks that someone is trying to kill him.
A live wire and a poisoned sandwich later, Shawn agrees -- especially when a drugged-out female judge almost dies. But out of all the people who loathe Nigel, which one tried to kill him? Then the police suspect that Shawn has lost his touch when he announces that someone was killed by a dinosaur, and is confronted by a sexy FTD psychic.
But that isn't the last or least of Sean and Gus's problems -- a chop shop with secrets, bounty hunters, Gus's parents accused of Yuletide murder, jockey deaths and fixed races, nanny-related robberies, electrocutions on the catwalk, and going undercover at a telenovela, a school for the gifted, and a retirement community. They even have a run-in with a wealthy, crazy woman that Gus drunkenly married on spring break years ago... and it turns out her new fiancee is a bit shady.
Finally, Shawn and Gus are pursuing one of their weirdest cases ever. First a security guard is suspected of stealing a 3000-year-old mummy -- but then it appears that the mummy actually murdered the guard. Can Shawn figure out what is going on -- with the mummy murder, the police chief, and his oddly-behaving father?
Although it didn't break much new ground, the first season of "Psych" was very fresh and entertaining TV. Fortunately creator Steve Franks is sticking to the old adage: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and the second season doesn't deviate from what works -- there's still lots of comedy, spoofery, silly dialogue ("It's spontaneous psychic krav maga!") and enjoyable mysteries.
The first episode kicks things off a bit weakly, since the "American Idol" joke gets stretched out too far. Fortunately the mysteries after that get much more solid, deftly juggling even the funny-sounding plot twists (strangulation by mummy bandage? Refrigeration trucks?). You even get an endless parade of pop culture references, from Michael Jackson to "Shaun of the Dead," James Bond to wikipedia.com. Gotta love that.
But the best aspect of "Psych" continues to be its kooky dialogue. Usually Shawn provides it ("I hunger for the meatballs the way a jackal salivates for an injured possum"), but other characters get to as well ("Hola. Me llamo Inspector Carlton Lassiter. Me gusta queso").
Shawn and Gus remain an entertaining pair of twentysomething everymen, with Roday continuing to be eccentric, lovably charming and kooky -- although Shawn gets quite a shock in the cliffhanger ending. And Hill gets more attention, with Gus pursuing models and faking psychic powers. We even discover a secret past involving sweater vests, spring break, and a drunken wedding -- lots of fun.
And the supporting cast remains solid -- Corbin Bernsen gets to participate in a couple of the cases as Shawn's hard-nosed dad, sometimes in loud tropical shirts. Timothy Omundson continues to be entertaining as harder-nosed cop Lassiter. And Maggie Lawson rounds off the cast as the "enigma wrapped in a little blonde riddle" who is Shawn's love interest, as well as a counterpoint to Lassiter.
The second season of "Psych" continues the eccentric crimes and equally odd crimesolvers, mingling comedy and mystery with only a couple weak spots. Sweet black licorice!
