Riki-Oh - The Story of Ricky (1993)

You MUST buy/rent/steal the video "the story of Ricki Oh"....An instant classic and quite possibly the most violent, gory, and graphic film ever made. Multiple gorings, eye gougings, stabbings, impalings, and dismemberments. Dudes get buried alive, encased in concrete, flayed, their tongues cut out, crushed under presses, and run through meat grinders. Guys are chopped in the face with swords, boards studded with nails, and have wood planes run up their face. Did I menntion that the prison warden in this movie shoots prisoners with exploding bullets that make them expand like balloons beforee they burst like road kill underneath a car tire?
The hero ricki punched through dudes, decapitates his enemies with oopen fist blows, crushes guys heads like he's popping a zit. There's even a scene where a guy, who is about to die in a fight with Ricki, grabs a knife and stabs himself in the stomach...then he pulls out his intestines and tries to strangle ricki with them....
With memorable lines like:
"They gave me 30 pounds of rice to cut you up, turn you into mince meat, and put you in a pie..."
"Oscar has shown his tatoos...now he must kill!!!!"
"Ricki, I am your uncle. I have known you since your were 7 or 8 years old, when you possessed suoperjuman strength. Do you still possess your super human strength?"
"Chi Cong feeds on strength!!!!!"
"I have hit you in your death spot..soon you will die"
"His style of Kung Fu is unorthodox...I do not think I can defeat him..."

again, for those who don't get it, this is meant to be a comedy. yet it's still smart and i would argue, well acted. the lip syncing is flawless and just adds to the humor. coming from a non-R. Kelly fan, trust me, it's good stuff.

Pee-wee's Playhouse #1 - Seasons 1 and 2 (1986) Review

Pee-wee's Playhouse #1 - Seasons 1 and 2 (1986)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Has there ever been a more surreal and bizarre opening sequence to any show ever made in America than that of PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE? The Surrealists felt that one of the keys of art lay in our dreams, and the intro to this show seems like a happy nightmare of sorts. The music, Pee Wee's odd vocal interjections, the variety of visual images, the introduction of the strange group of inhabitants living in the playhouse, all combine to announce to the would-be viewer that his was a show that wasn't going to go down any path that had been traveled by any previous show.
For five seasons beginning in 1986, this was simply one of the most amazing shows TV has ever produced. Paul Reubens was amazing as Pee Wee Herman, literally a child with the appearance of an adult, who was a veritable encyclopedia of irritating habits that kids can assume, with every annoying verbal come a kid has ever used. Armed with a great group of writers, a stellar cast, and some remarkable set and character designers, this show did things that no kid's show had ever done before or has done sense, though the influence on the more anarchistic line of kid's cartoons can still be detected. I would be willing to be that the makers of shows like SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS are fans of Pee Wee.
Unfortunately, this all came crashing to an end when a sex scandal caused CBS to pull the show off TV. In fact, before the scandal they had already ceased making new episodes of the show. But the incident did two things: 1) it caused CBS to cease showing the show in reruns and 2) killed off any future use of the Pee Wee character by Reubens. The series has been re-released on video, though it has been out of print for a number of years, and because of the sexual nature of Reubens demise, few networks have been willing to rebroadcast the show. Until this DVD release, PEE WEE has been more or less unavailable to the public.
Although Paul Reubens dominated the show as Pee Wee, the show is amazing today for the remarkable amount of talent on the show. Over the years I have been amazed at how many people remember Cowboy Curtis from the show, but are unaware that Laurence Fishburne portrayed him. Captain Carl was played by Phil Hartman before he went on to star on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE for years. The second actor to play the King of Cartoons was William Marshall, star Blaxploitation cult classic vampire film BLACULA. Natasha Lyonne, who played Opal, went on to additional success as a child actress and as a young adult, including THE SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS and BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER. S. Epatha Merkerson, who played Reba the letter carrier, has gone on to a long career on LAW AND ORDER. And of course the woman who made Pee Wee's heart skip a beat, the beautiful Miss Yvonne, was played by Lynne Marie Stewart, who has gone on to plays a host of supporting roles on TV and in film. All in all, you have to acknowledge that this was far from a normal children's cast.
But it wasn't merely the human cast that made this show so remarkable. Inhabiting Pee Wee's playhouse were an extraordinarily odd group of denizens, from Pterri the Pterodactyl to Mr. Kite to Mr. Windows to Cool Cat and talking chairs, flowers, and fish. Conky the Robot would each week dispense that show's secret word, a stunt seemed designed to irritate parents' as much as possible. One of my favorite recurring characters was the Salesman, whose appearance at Pee Wee's door would cause panic and disconcerted screaming each week. And how could you describe Jambi to someone who hadn't seen the show before? A disembodied genie's head who each week could solve whatever problems facing either Pee Wee or his friends with those amazing words, "Mekka Lekka Hi-Mekka Hiney Ho!"
I'm delighted that these are available now on DVD. A whole generation of kids has passed not knowing what a great thing they missed. Kids who are in high school today have only a vague idea about Pee Wee, though they might know his two movies. For many he was someone whose career ended because he did something very, very bad, though not many seem to know what that was. Now we get to see all of these great shows again, and they get to discover him for the first time.

Danny Bhoy: Subject to Change Review

Danny Bhoy: Subject to Change

My friends and I get together once a month for a "Comedy Night" potluck ... everyone brings a covered dish and we take turns bringing a new comedy DVD. I'm so glad I bought this one! Not only did everyone love it, but to a person each has now borrowed it to watch a second time at home.
Pretty unique POV, and unlike some stand-up comics he's funny as hell without having to resort to the gutter. I'm not saying he doesn't swear occasionally - he does - but he doesn't base his entire flipping act on it.
Having grown up in Scotland, bits of this tickled me a little deeper - like the Scots response to being told it's last call in a pub, or the fact that the Scottish National Anthem is the only one in the world that makes provision for those with Tourette's - LOL! His really-bad French and American accents are hilarious, and I have to say I love it when a comic cracks HIMSELF up ;-)
There are two bonus features on this DVD as well - a guide to American sports, and a visitors guide to Scotland - both as funny as anything in his stand-up routine. Spend the money, you won't be disappointed.

South Park - The Complete Ninth Season (1997) Review

South Park - The Complete Ninth Season (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the last few seasons, each new season of South Park became my favorite. The trend almost continued with Season 9 but I don't think it is quite as solid as Season 8, but close. Still there are several slam-dunk episodes in this set: "Mr. Garrison's Fancy New V---," "The Losing Edge," "The Death of Eric Cartman," "Follow That Egg," and "Bloody Mary." Either "Mr. Garrison's...," "Follow That Egg," or "Bloody Mary" is my favorite, it's difficult to choose. There are other excellent eps as well like "Best Friends Forever" (which won an Emmy), "Erection Day," "Two Days Before...," and "Marjorine." This set also has the controversial episode "Trapped in the Closet" about Tom Cruise and Scientology that caused the "Chef" Isaac Hayes falling out. Jam-packed with quality SP humor taking current events and issues waaaay over-the-top, here's what you get:
Disc 1:
"Mr. Garrison's Fancy New V..." Kyle is depressed that Jew's can't play basketball. Inspired by Mr. Garrison's recent sex change, Kyle undergoes a "Negroplasty" (opposite of the "Caucasianplasty that Michael Jackson had). What he does not realize is that the procedure is only for cosmetic purposes.
"Die Hippie, Die": This is one of my least favorites of this season. Cartman detects signs of a Hippie Music Jam Festival forming in South Park, but is put in jail for locking them in the basement. When the town sees the hippies taking over, they seek Cartman's help. Cartman's plan: take out the hippies with Slayer.
"Wing": After Token wins a singing contest, the boys start a talent agency to try to cash in on Token's potential royalties. When another agent steals him away, the boys sign a new talent: The City Wok guy's wife who has a penchant for singing ABBA songs and has ties with the Asian Mafia.
"Best Friends Forever": Emmy award-winner. Did any fan of the early days of South Park see that coming? Kenny is so good at playing "Heaven v. Hell" on PSP that heaven has him killed so he can leave earth and command their armies. Before the big showdown, doctors on earth revive him to a "tomato" state where the big debate ensues. Interesting take on the "pull the plug" issue.
"The Losing Edge": The boys hate Little League and try to lose to end their season and Stan's dad's dreams...of beating up a father of the opposing team during the state championships. The Bat Dad: "You're about to be bat dadded!" Hilarious!
Disc 2:
"The Death of Eric Cartman": Cartman has done many bad things, but eating the skin off the Colonel's chicken is the last straw. His friends all ignore him to the point where Cartman believes he is dead. He recruits the help of an ignorant Butters to try to give his soul peace to reach the other side.
"Erection Day": Jimmy is psyched to win the school's talent show but is having puberty issues. He goes on a quest to relieve his problem before his act, meeting Nut Gobbler. The Goth kids at the talent show play an anti-talent show song and then one of them says, "I hope we win."
"Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow": Stan and Cartman drive a boat into a giant beaver dam flooding the nearby town of Beaverton. While Stan is burdened down by guilt about the Beaverton residents stranded on their rooftops, the folks of South Park blame the event on global warming and barricade themselves from impending doom.
"Marjorine": Cartman convinces Butters to fake his own death and come back as the new girl in town so as to get invited to the girls' slumber party and steal their mysterious fortune-telling device.
"Follow That Egg": Excellent episode addressing the gay marriage issue as only SP can. "Mrs." Garrison's class is paired up with eggs to learn about parenting (Token's team is given a brown egg). After Mr. Slave gets engaged to Big Gay Al, Mrs. Garrison goes on a campaign against gay marriage and conducts an experiment in his class.
Disc 3:
"Ginger Kids": Cartman starts vicious rumors about kids with red hair and freckles and they begin to be discriminated against. To teach Cartman a lesson, Stan, Kyle and Kenny sneak into Cartman's room, knock him out, and give him a ginger makeover. Cartman then starts the Ginger Separatist Movement. Cartman sees no irony in this.
"Trapped in the Closet": The Church of Scientology believes Stan is the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard. When Stan doesn't praise his acting skills, Hubbard-worshipper Tom Cruise hides away in Stan's closet. Meanwhile, Stan learns some disturbing things about scientology. Isaac Hayes fall-out episode.
"Free Willzyx": A performing Orca whale at the sea park can communicate with the boys who believe he must return to his native planet, the moon, or he will die. That composite sketch of the kids is great (especially Cartman and Kyle--although Kyle's mother doesn't think it is a good likeness).
"Bloody Mary": Stan's dad is busted for DUI and believes he has no power over his alcoholism disease. He needs a miracle. Good news! A statue of the Virgin Mary is bleeding out her...uh...posterior. Too funny!!!

Was told about this show by a work collegue who said he nearly wet himself with laughter watching the show. Once my wife and i started watching we were hooked!!
As soon as the fourth season had finished we came on here and bought all the dvd's as you cannot get them in England as it is only shown on sky tv channel paramount. Then paramount repeated all 4 series again and we were hooked every night. It has just finished showing again and we are having withdrawl symptoms!! Our dvd's should be here soon and the sooner the better!! The best episodes were 'mans gotta eat' where randy returns to the streets as smokey to fund his cheeseburger habit, and 'propane, propane' where Mr. Layhey looses it and tries to kill ricky. Everybody should watch trailer park boys as it is so funny but it does take a few episodes to really get into it. We are busy converting everybody we know into TPB addicts and as soon as our dvd's get here we are locking all our friends in our front room and watching all of them on our 42' wide screen tv. No one is leaving until they are hooked too!!! BUY THEM ALL!!!

...something very important, and that is THE THIRD DISC.
I am not going to review the movie, but the DVD itself. The extra material is superb. It is fantastic actually, and these are for the true admirers of fashion and VOGUE. Could there be even more? Yeah, sure... They could have included the basic bios of the subjects, more pictures, VOGUE through ages, pivotal photos from the magazine archives, even more footage with the fashion designers and models etc. Still, over 90 minutes of extra material is just great.
But you know what is even greater than this version?
The THREE DISC VERSION that Barnes&Noble has to offer.
This elusive third disc in question includes a 25 minutes of footage from the preparation of the legendary Costume Institute Gala. It is just amazing. You get a lot of Anna here, and no Grace actually, however, you get to witness the MET event preparation including the decor, some peacocks, even Naomi Campbell, Cate Blanchett and Michael Bloomberg, and more of Anna being fashion's true 'Eminence Grise'. Her influence is immense, but this third disc truly proves how prominent she is, outside the high walls of VOGUE or the intimidating fashion shows. amazon.com version of the DVD doesn't include this third disc. I suppose the moviemakers and studio did cut a deal with B&N, for an even more special and exclusive release just for them.
I have learned about this edition and got excited. And I went to B&N today, and picked up my copy. It is more expensive than the 2 disc amazon edition -understandably- but so worth it, in my opinion.Disc I:

Man on Wire (2008) Review

Man on Wire (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was lured into seeing this film by my teenage son, who is a circus acrobat by genetic conviction as surely as Philippe Petit was a high-wire walker and as I am a musician. I would never have entered the theater if I'd known what I'd be seeing. I have a pathologically empathetic response to films. When I was a little kid, I used to shout out warnings to Tweetie Bird when the cat got near. During fight scenes, my whole body twitches and my wife gets nervous for the safety of the unsuspecting head in front of me. I'm a climber in real life. I've been to the summit of Annapurna. But my blood pressure rises and I tremble with acrophobia at Hollywood simulations of climbing. This film Man on Wire took two years off my life, I'm sure. It's that intense, with its coy intersplicing of still photos and super-eight footage of Petit in mid-air and lovely slow talking-head interviews of Petit and his accomplices, years later, clearly establishing that they all survived to tell the tale.
Those interviews of middle-aged daredevils, reminiscing about their greatest caper, were as intense for me as the dodgy accomplishment of the adventure. It was literally the end of a love affair with life for all of them, something "too hot not to cool down," an overture too overwhelming to be followed by a mere opera. When Petit's boyhood friend broke down in tears at the waning of their friendship, when Petit's wife-the-love-of-his-life felt the reality that his life no longer needed hers, the whole social cost of Petit's obsession moved me also almost to tears. Hey, I might have cried if my heart had slowed down to twice normal. I felt an urge to grab my son and hug or shake him, saying "don't let your art be more to you than your life."
There's more to this film than a mere victimless heist thriller.

On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire and illegally rigged between the New York's twin towers. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released. This documentary complies Petit s footage to show the numerous extraordinary challenges he faced in completing the artistic crime of the century.
