The Suite Life of Zack & Cody - Sweet Suite Victory (2005) Review

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody - Sweet Suite Victory (2005)
Average Reviews:

I am a parent who watches the Suite Life of Zack and Cody with my daughter occasionally. I have seen enough episodes to know that these are not the best picks that Disney could have released on DVD. The first episode has the boys at their youngest. The show is better in my opinion as the two boys get older. However, for a child, the battle of the bands idea is fun. London and Maddie are actually more intresting to watch in the earlier episodes, and it's always fun to see how London screws up even when she means well.
The second episode is when the boys run for class president. I liked the way Maddie and London get involved to help the boys. It was also nice to see Zack stand up for Cody at the end showing some family loyalty. I also liked the outrageous ideas that Zack and London came up with to get Zack elected. The pajama picture of Cody was a low blow but funny.
The last episode focuses on Maddie and London the most. Both girls throw sweet 16 parties for themselves on the same day. It forces the gang to pick which party to go to. As usual London over does it and makes a mess of things. The girls friendship gets strained, but ends up ok in the end.
Overall the episodes are just ok. I have seen better episodes on Disney channel. I also think Disney went cheap on this release. Three episodes is hardly worth the price of buying it. The extra features of the gag reel and Brenda Song doing the DVD game is ok. But personally I think Disney would have been better off putting a couple more episodes on the disc. After all thats why we really want to buy the DVD in the first place. Episodes that would have been better to add are the ones where the boys let the bugs loose in the tipton, or when Maddie and London have the fake baby for the weekend. Those stand out as funny episodes.
SO two stars is all I can give this release which skimped on the episodes and did'nt pick the best of the lot. If you really like Zack and Cody and want to get this release, try to by it online. Used and as cheap as possible. The taking over the Tipton release is better in my opinion and has more episodes.

Infamous Times - The Original 50 Cent Review

Infamous Times - The Original 50 Cent

INFAMOUS TIMES: THE ORIGINAL 50 CENT (2005)
directed by Froi Cuesta
approx. 1 hour 15 minutes
By now its old news that Queens rapper Curtis Jackson named himself after Brooklyn stick up kid "50 Cent" a.k.a. Kelvin Martin. This DVD tries to give some context for the crime ridden Fort Greene projects where Martin got his reputation. Brooklyn in the 1980s was a dangerous place and Mr. Martin provided some of that danger. We are told that this is a man who would rob drug dealers and pimps. A criminal even in the criminal underworld, Kelvin Martin alienated most of his friends by the end of his life and seems like an unlikely figure to admire.
Like other DVDs made for a rap audience, this movie romanticizes Kelvin Martin's violent exploits. This is a problem with America in general these days, that "underdogs" are expected to be lawless animals who don't know any other way. Martin's friends and family are interviewed throughout and others close to him provided personal letters and photos to piece together his story. His friends talk about his "career", from his early days stealing jewelry to his time in Riker's to his later stint in the military. His girlfriend talks about his "softer side" and says he didn't bring his criminal life to their relationship. We hear from his daughter who never got to know her father since he was gunned down. Some faces hip hop fans will recognize are DJ Scratch from EPMD and legendary producer Eric B. who both knew the young Martin. An interesting section of the movie is where people discuss why they think he got the name "50 Cent". Standing at just over 5 ft., its likely that he simply got the name because he was a short dude. One theory I hadn't heard is that while in jail he encountered the Five Percent Nation and later put a materialist spin on it.
The sections with rapper Curtis Jackson are thankfully short. They interview some of his former associates and Jackson himself. They discuss the controversy over Jackson's "Ghetto Qua'ran". Of course this is the track where he basically "names names" of all the major NYC criminals from his youth and led to a "renewed interest" in these men by the NYPD. One name mentioned was "Slim" a.k.a. Chaz Williams who was Jackon's manager and is interviewed on this DVD. Another name was "Supreme" a.k.a. Kenneth McGriff, supposedly the inspiration for the movie 'NEW JACK CITY' and "business associate" of the Murder Inc. label, who Jackson was feuding with. All of this is also covered in the book 'QUEENS REIGNS SUPREME'.
Kelvin Martin, despite being close to his family, was not a respectable person even by street criminal standards. At one point, one of Martin's friends tells the story of when he had to remind Kelvin that he was breaking the "codes of the streets". Martin responded "F%ck those codes". Maybe this is the message Curtis Jackson is trying to send by recording the type of music he does. Jackson says he named himself after the original 50 Cent because "he's the same type of person".
I will say that the production value of this DVD is much higher than most other rap-related DVDs. There are graphics and re-enactments and the sound levels are mostly listenable throughout. There is also a followable structure throughout and best of all, no yelling doofuses hogging for camera time. The DVD also includes brief segments on such glamorous topics as Brownsville Brooklyn's Blood street gang (which includes footage of a pitbull fight) and Vernon, NY strip club "Sue's Rendezvous" (which states that the lowest amount the dancers make is $50,000).
At the end of the movie, Curtis Jackson promises to keep Kelvin Martin's name alive. This movie is good for what it is, but why not a DVD on somebody like Frederic Morrow?

Hopefully, you see this before paying the rip-off prices that third party sellers are posting. Yes, this DVD set is out of print, BUT Sony WILL BE RELEASING THEM IN THE FUTURE. I asked Rhino Video what happened through their Q&A person, Dr. Rhino. Here is the response:
A message from the Rhino Video Deptartment:
Rhino's deal with Sunbow, the licensor of Transformers, GI Joe and Jem, has expired. Sony Music has acquired them and will reissue these titles at some point.
Dr. Rhino
So, if you can wait then you will save yourself at least 50 bucks. I can't believe these sellers are trying to sell the items for more than they are worth.

The Secrets of Isis - The Complete Series Review

The Secrets of Isis - The Complete Series
Average Reviews:

There are specific wonderful, magical moments in most young boys' lives when they realize that they have an attraction to the opposite sex. Such was the case when hottie JoAnna Cameron donned her ancient Egyptian amulet and chanted toward the sky "Oh zephyr winds which blow high, lift me now so I can fly," and I was awakened to such childhood wonders! Isis was a generational inspiration in the pantheon of heroic 70's television babes that included Linda Carter's Wonder Woman, Lindsay Wagner as the Bionic Woman, Charlie's Angels and Erin Gray's Wilma from Buck Rogers.
As science teacher Andrea Thomas, she had found the ancient amulet of Hatshepsut during an archeological dig which endowed upon her the powers of the ancient Egyptian goddess with the gifts of flight, speed, strength and telekinesis which were summoned when she intoned the sacred chants and using her powers selflessly to help those in need. Her secret identity was concealed even from her closest friends Rick Mason, Renee Carol and Cindy Lee, but known only to her faithful feathered companion, a black crow named Tut.
The Secrets of Isis began as part of the Shazam!/Isis hour on CBS in 1975 consisting of 15 episodes and spun-off into her own series the following year but lasted only 7 episodes. Isis would also crossover and appear in 3 episodes of Shazam! and later she appeared in animation form as a character of the Freedom Force on Tarzan and the Super 7.

Demons (Special Edition) (1986)
Average Reviews:

What can be said about Demons ? The one thing that comes to mind is that it's stood the test of time after 16 years. I consider myself a huge movie buff and this is one of the films that scarred me as a child. I can reall watching this flick with my dorm buddies in both the Air Force and colleage and they were enterainted by it. What makes this film so scary is the gore and effects. When I was 4 my parents banned from me seeing this movie. My first time seeing it I know why the film isn't for those who can't handle gore or have weak stomach. The musical score and tense pacing are amazing and if you watch the film in pitch black with surround sound it'll give you a few scary moments. I give the fim *** out of four. I give this rating based on the camera work and score. The film's only bad point is the dubbing.

Star Trek The Next Generation - Jean-Luc Picard Collection (1987) Review

Star Trek The Next Generation - Jean-Luc Picard Collection (1987)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I remember when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first premiered and "TV Guide" dismissed it as a show "that baldly goes" where one show, the original "Star Trek," had gone before. They even cracked a joke about the show needing "Spock plugs." Several years later "TV Guide" named Patrick Stewart as its television actor of the decade of the 1990s. So it is not surprising that there would be a "Star Trek: The New Generation - Jean-Luc Picard Collection." The question is whether they picked the right seven episodes for this DVD set. Clearly the only caveat is that two-part episodes are not in the running, which eliminates the two parts of "The Best of Both Worlds," "Chain of Command," and "All Good Things." The answer to the question is, yes, they did an excellent job of selecting these seven episodes:

"The Big Goodbye" (Written by Tracy Torme, Season 1: Episode 11) is the comic relief episode of the set, albeit by default. Captain Picard takes a break from the difficult preparations to give a proper greeting to the Jarada by doing a Dixon Hill holodeck adventure. Picard is joined by Data, Dr. Crusher, and the ship's historian, Whalen in the scenario set in 1941 San Francisco when the holodeck malfunctions trapping the quartet with the safety parameters off. Whalen is killed and Picard has to play the Dixon Hill role for real.

"Sarek" (Story by Marc Cushman and Jake Jacobs, Teleplay by Peter S. Beagle, Season 3: Episode 23) has the Vulcan ambassador on a mission to establish relations between the Federation and the Legaran. However, Spock's father is suffering from Bendii Syndrome, a rare condition among Vulcans that is characterized by a loss of emotional control. To allow Sarek to fulfill his mission, Picard agrees to a mind-meld that will link their minds. While Sarek is able to use the captain's strength to successfully complete the negotiations, Picard endures a storm of emotions from Sarek as Stewart turns in a memorable performance.

"Family" (Written by Ronald D. Moore, Season 4: Episode 2) is the coda to "Best of Both Worlds, Part 2." All of the plot lines have to do with the title, with Worf's adoptive human parents visiting the "Enterprise" and Beverly Crusher finding a message from her dead husband for Wesley. But the key storyline is Picard visiting the family vineyard in France and encountering his older brother, Robert. Seriously considering a job offer on Earth, the brothers end up fighting and Picard finally breaks down over the guilt he feels for not being able to stop the Borg from controlling him.

"The Drumhead" (Written by Jeri Taylor, Season 4: Episode 21) is the weakest of the episodes selected although it does offer Stewart going up against guest star Jean Simmons as Admiral Satie, who is engaging in a witch hunt looking for a traitor. This is essentially a courtroom drama where Satie finally crosses the line and accuses Picard of being the traitor. A solid episode, but nothing special, especially compared to the next two episodes in the collection.

"Darmok" (Story by Philip Lazebnik and Joe Menosky, Teleplay by Menosky, Season 5: Episode 2) is a personal favorite. The "Enterprise" encounters the Children of Tama, a race whose language is considered incomprehensible. Dathon (Paul Winfield), the captain of the Tamarians beams down himself and Picard to the planet below. There the two learn to communicate and fight a monster together. It turns out the Tamarian language is based on metaphor, communicating by example, and the final two scenes of the episode provide emotional examples of how well Picard has learned this language.

"The Inner Light" (Story by Morgan Gendel, Teleplay by Gendel and Peter Allan Fields, Season 5: Episode 25) is the center square on this bingo card, considered by most fans to be Stewart's finest episode. An alien probe knocks Picard unconscious and he awakens on a strange world named Kataan where a beautiful woman tells him his name is Kamin, her husband of three years, and that he is suffering from memory problems. In what is only 25 minutes aboard the "Enterprise" Picard lives an entire lifetime on the planet Kataan, eventually accepting the life he has no choice but to lead. A powerful episode that gives Picard the chance to live the life he will never have as a Starfleet captain.

"Tapestry" (Written by Ronald D. Moore, Season 6: Episode 15) is a Q episode. Picard is critically wounded in an attack and wakes up in a white light where Q tells him he is dead. Picard's artifical heart has cost him his life and the captain gets the chance to see what would have happened if he had not had that fight with the Nausicaan when he was at Starfleet Academy. The result was that everything that made him a great leader would have been lost and he ends up on the "Enterprise" as a lowly astrophysics officer. This is certainly a nice final episode for this set since it puts Picard's life in perspective.

For me, this scores six out of seven. I would have ditched "The Drumhead" and substituted "Lessons" (Season 6: Episode 19), where Picard shares his music on the Kataan flute with Lieutenant Commander Nella Daren, and receives another lesson in the loneliness of command. It is interesting to note that the UK version of this set has a different lineup consisting of "Allegiance," "Captain's Holiday," "Darmok," "The Inner Light," "Starship Mine," "Lessons" and "Bloodlines." Intersting choices, but clearly on balance the US version has a better lineup.

This colletion certainly does well enought to justify rounding up, especially once you throw in "From Here to Infinity," a documentary of space exploration hosted by Stewart. I was not interested in picking up all season by season "Star Trek: The Next Generation" sets and I cannot imagine a set focusing on any of the other characters being as strong as this collection (Data and Worf will vie for second, obviously, unless they do a Lwaxana Troi set), so the "Jean-Luc Picard Collection" suits me just fine.

The Jetsons: Season Two, Vol. 1 (2009) Review

The Jetsons: Season Two, Vol. 1 (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fans of all ages need no introduction to Hanna-Barbera's Classic TV series `The Jetsons,' but may be confused by the origin date of this fabulous DVD release: 1985!
That's because the "original" Jetsons, which debuted Sept. 23, 1962, lasted for only one season on ABC, but became much more successful when it eventually ended up in syndication. (Those episodes have already been released on DVD. The Jetsons - The Complete First Season)
That successful syndication led to a brief revival in 1985 with all-new episodes. The new series, referred to as `Season Two,' boasted more advanced animation, which had richer color, along with attempts to add content to make it seem even more futuristic than its parent show.
The first 21 Episodes from 1985's `Season Two,' have been collected here for the time in this three-disc boxed set from Warner Home Video. Jetsons-Season 2 V01
In addition, a special featurette, `Jetsons: Return to the Future,' is also included that focuses on the evolution of the series. Among those interviewed is animation expert Mark Evanier.
`The Jetsons' was originally conceived following the iconic success of Hanna-Barbera's `The Flintstones,' which featured a `modern' Stone Age family. Hanna-Barbera decided to turn their Bedrock success on its ear, creating a similar family cartoon, but changed the setting to their vision of the Space Age - the 21st century!
The Jetsons originally lived Orbit City, a city where the houses were literally way, way up in the air, like Space Age needles. The family included George, his wife, Jane, and their children Judy and Elroy, along with their beloved dog, Astro. A very sweet robot housekeeper, Rosie, equipped with an unexpected personality, soon joined the family.
So, the Jetsons lived the `average' life in Hanna-Barbera's future, which incorporated flying space cars, instant transport tubes, various robots and a host of other bizarre gadgets to make their lives a breeze. But, the wonderful thing about The Jetsons was that, regardless of the technology, their problems were the same ones faced by families of all ages.
In the original `Season One,' George worked at Spacely Space Sprockets, run by his pint-sized, ill-tempered boss, Cosmo S. Spacely. In `Season Two,' new characters were introduced, including a a second pet for the Jetsons named Orbitty, whose spring-like legs and suction cup feet enabled him to suspend himself on anything and in any direction. Orbitty is also able to change color to reflect his emotions.
The `Season Two' episodes collected here, along with the second-half of the 1985 episodes yet to be released, also aired in syndication, and generated the same level of success as the original episodes had. As a result, a second revival occurred, leading to 10 more episodes, referred to as `Season Three,' finalizing the episode series in 1987!
In addition, `The Jetsons' prompted two TV movies: The music-themed `Rockin' with Judy Jetson,' and then a true Hanna-Barbera crossover, `The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones.'
In 1989, `The Jetsons: the Movie' hit the big screen with its only film, which depicted the finale of the entire series. An important note, this movie is being released on DVD for the first time from Universal Studios. The Jetsons: The Movie It's being dedicated to the memories of George O'Hanlon, the voice of George Jetston, and Mel Blanc, THE master voice animator, who was also the voice of Mr. Spacely. Ironically, this movie was the final voice project for both men.
The 21 episodes in this DVD boxed set from `Season Two' are: Elroy Meets Orbitty; Rosie Come Home; Solar Snoops; Judy's Birthday Surprise; Super George; Family Fallout; S.M.A.S.H.; The Mirrormorph; Mother's Day for Rosie; Jetsons' Millions; Fugitive Fleas; Rip-Off Rosie; Far-Out Father; Astro's Big Moment; The Cosmic Courtship of George and Jane; Fantasy Planet; S'no Relative; Instant Replay; Haunted Halloween; Future Tense; and The Wrong Stuff.
We fans can only hope that after all of this time, the remainder of `Season Two,' and the 10 episodes comprising the final `Season Three,' will be released onto DVD very, very soon!

Beethoven's Big Break (2008)

As a kid, I grew up with the first two Beethoven movies! In my opinion, they are the only worthwhile films in the 'series' I was confused as to what this is supposed to be. Is is the 6th film and a writer happens to guess everything that happened in the original classic, or is it a prequel that shows how the first was made. It does have some cute and funny moments, and I liked Cesar Millan's cameo. Eddie is an animal trainer, but he doesn't want anything to do with dogs. His son, Billy runs into Beethoven and he wants to keep him. Soon, Beethoven gets a part in a movie based on his life from the original. I'd probably recommend BEETHOVEN'S BIG BREAK!!!

Filmation's Ghostbusters - The Animated Series, Vol. 1 (1986) Review

Filmation's Ghostbusters - The Animated Series, Vol. 1 (1986)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not to be confused with "The Real Ghostbusters," the animated series based on the 1984 hit film, Filmation's "Ghostbusters" was actually based on the 1975 live action Saturday morning series "The Ghost Busters" starring Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch [of "F Troop" fame] as ghost busters Jake Kong and Eddie Spenser respectively. Along with Tracy, their gorilla played by Bob Burns, Jake and Eddie fought the ghosts of historical villains. Both versions of the show were produced by Filmation.
Filmation's 1986 animated Ghostbusters series featured Jake Kong Jr. and Eddie Spenser Jr., the sons of Jake and Eddie assisted by Tracy the gorilla, Jessica the reporter, Belfry the bat, and Futura the sorceress. From their Ghost Command headquarters, they battled ghosts and phantoms from fairy tales, present-day and future. Whether traveling through time and space in their transforming Ghost Buggy, or battling the evil spooks of Prime Evil at his Haunt-Quarters, the Ghostbusters would always answer the call to action with their battlecry "Let's Go Ghostbusters!" The battlecry much like He-Man's transformation scene, albeit to a lesser extent, was that scene in the show I always looked forward to, and never got tired of.
I almost didn't bother to watch Filmation's Ghostbusters back in first-run because [at the time] I felt it was trying to steal The Real Ghostbusters' thunder--which it was, sort of. It's all relative however as neither animated series would've been produced if it weren't for the success of 1984's "Ghostbusters" film. Columbia Pictures (who owned the film and spin-off cartoon) settled a lawsuit with Filmation for an undisclosed sum in order to use the title in the film, but that didn't preclude Filmation's own animated attempt to capitalize on poltergeist popularity. With all of that in mind, I did watch both shows in first-run and had found there to be plenty of ghostbusting fun to be had from both shows.
Hopefully, the folks at Sony who produced those infuriating Real Ghostbusters 4-episode volumes will take notes from BCI's Ink & Paint, and sometime soon package The Real Ghostbusters into a set as bountiful in episodes and extras as this Filmation Ghostbusters set.
Filmation's Ghostbusters - Volume One is a 6-disc set featuring the show's first 32 [of 65] episodes in Full-Frame (1.33:1) video, plus the following Special Features:

* Bonus episode: "The Ghost Busters" live action series episode #1 - "The Maltese Monkey" featuring ghost busting trio Forrest Tucker, Larry Storch and Bob Burns"Yeah!"

Rad (1986) Review

Rad (1986)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
RAD is the ultimate BMX movie. It is a movie about the underdog struggling to get to the top, or in Cru Jones case, the ability to prove himself. The action on bicycles in this movie started a freestyle frenzy all over the world. Guy's like Eddie Fiola and Martin Aparijo played a significant part in the film. When I first saw this movie I begged my parents to buy me a freestyle bike to do the tricks I saw in the film, that was in 86 and I still consider BMX to be an important part of my life, thanks to this film. Bmx did not fade out, look at DAve Mirra, if anything it has certainly grew. This movie is hard to find and it is something I treasure very much. I strongly encourage you to express your interest in this film and the release of it on DVD.

Dungeons & Dragons - The Complete Animated Series (1983) Review

Dungeons and Dragons - The Complete Animated Series (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was my #1 favorite cartoon series when I was eleven years old in 1983. I watched it religiously on TV back then, and when we got our first VCR, I recorded every re-run and watched those videotapes until I wore them out. Naturally, I was excited to hear this show was finally coming out on DVD. I bought the complete series box set released by BCI right away. All the episodes look great in terms of picture quality. Not to mention, the special features are surprisingly plentiful for an old, mostly-forgotten Saturday morning cartoon, and it really brought back some great memories.
Then I discovered a very disappointing problem. And I'm going to sound like a real nit-picker here - but I gotta state my case...
Any dedicated fan of this show is familiar with the episode "The Dragon's Graveyard" - generally considered to be the best episode of the entire series. That's the one where the kids decide to destroy Venger (the ultimate, evil bad guy) once and for all. They plan to do this by convincing Tiamat (the ultimate, evil 5-headed Dragon) to help them. It's a very cool story, because the good guys basically team up with one arch villain in order to settle their grudge match with another arch villain. As a kid in the 80's, I videotaped this series and "The Dragon's Graveyard" was one episode that I went back and watched repeatedly. So, I know that episode almost by heart. One of the things I always loved about that episode, and which I still remember clearly, was its powerful musical score. Especially during the scene where Venger throws fireballs at Uni, the baby Unicorn, nearly killing her, and the scene at the end, where the kids have their final, climactic battle with Venger, pin him against a rock, and lead hero Hank has to make the ultimate decision whether to kill Venger, or let him go. From watching and re-watching this particular episode to death on videotape, I remember very clearly that during these scenes the music had a fast, chaotic, rushing quality - a theme not heard frequently in other episodes - which racheted up the energy and took the drama way beyond typical Saturday morning cartoon fare.
And yet, while watching this same classic episode on the BCI-released Dungeons and Dragons DVD set, I noticed that this music had been completely replaced with slower, formulaic sections of music that can be regularly heard elsewhere in the series. This change in the music made the scenes described above considerably less effective, severely weakening the emotional impact of this episode.
Allright, now - yes - I realize how trite and ridiculous it must sound for a 30+ year old man to be nit picking the DVD quality of one single episode of a Saturday Morning cartoon show he loved when he was eleven. But the whole reason I bought this DVD set in the first place was to re-experience the innocent fun of those childhood memories, and instead I got a diluted version of that experience.
As a matter of fact, in the "Episode Trivia" section, it even mentions that another version of "The Dragon's Graveyard" episode exists, with a completely different musical score... and when I read that, all I could think was, "Yeah, no kidding, and you bozos put the weaker of the two versions on the DVD set. Thanks a lot!"
So... that's my one huge disappointment with the BCI set, and I'm guessing other fans who are total geeks for this show, will notice and be bothered by it, too.
NOW HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS... In 2009, Dungeons and Dragons was RE-RELEASED in a new DVD set, by a company called Mill Creek Entertainment. I had heard rumors that this new release RESTORED ALL of the ORIGINAL MUSIC used on the show, thus presenting every episode AS IT APPEARED, WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY SHOWN on TV in the early 1980's. At first I wasn't sure if I should believe the rumors... Then I saw that the Mill Creek release was selling for a surprisingly lower price than the BCI set... Low enough that I decided it was worth giving it another shot.
So, I ordered it, and let me tell you as a knowledgeable fan, that yes - the Mill Creek Entertainment release DOES include all the episodes with their original music. THIS is "The Dragon's Graveyard" as I remember and love it. Be advised, the Mill Creek release contains no Special Features, which is unfortunate, but I find myself not caring about that. The important thing is to have all the original episodes in their original form. And again, the price on the Mill Creek set is also a lot cheaper than the price on the BCI set, so it's hard to complain about the lack of "extras".
Bottom line - this is a great cartoon series. But if you want to experience this show in its original form - do yourself a favor: Snub the BCI set, and buy the Mill Creek Entertainment set. Take if from a long time fan of this show. I was deeply disappointed with the BCI set, and very, very happy with the Mill Creek set.

When it first came out on TV on January 23rd, 1983, THE-A-TEAM ranked 10th on the Nielsen rating (The Percent of all TV-equipped homes tuned to the program on an average night, as measured by Nielsen Media Research). Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer (1985) Review

Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer (1985)

My Goodness! Just when I thought that this movie was out of print I come across this wonderful link at Amazon.com! Oh, how I could kiss them!
If you are looking for an 80s cartoon to bring back the good ol' days in animation you can stop here and click the "Add to Shopping Cart" button, because you have found THE most perfect 80s cartoon of all time. People of all ages, male or female will love this movie! Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer is full of colorful animation (excuse the pun) and great songs that just make you want to get up and dance like it's the 80s all over again.
Rainbow Brite must deal with her greatest adversary yet: an evil Princess who wants to take the greatest light in the world and keep it to herself, thus causing all of the color to disappear from the world. (no light = no colors!) This is an even bigger job than trying to fight Murky or Lurky! Along the way, Rainbow Brite meets a new friend and she learns that working together really does help. Only friendship and unselfishness can save the day!
This is a rare treat to find on the web, so if you really must have an 80s cartoon to keep you going, THIS IS A MUST HAVE! It definitely made my day (as it will over and over on my television set for years to come ^_~)!!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - Season One, Vol. 1 (1983) Review

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - Season One, Vol. 1 (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season 1 - Volume 1: He-man & the Masters of the Universe! The classic 80s cartoon FINALLY arrives with all its memorable characters, stories & fantasy, digitally remastered with extras! This fall - mark the date! October 18th! Part 1 of 2, Season 1, this set is chock-a-block with amazing extras. The hit cartoon adventure series brought to life the adventures of Prince Adam & his alter-ego, the mighty He-Man battling the evil Skeletor to protect the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Son of King Randor and Queen Marlena of Eternia, his faithful sidekick was the cowardly green & orange pet tiger, Cringer. "By the power of Grayskull!" Adam's cry in times of danger, together with his magical 'Sword Of Power' transformed them into the mighty He-Man and the ferocious tiger, Battle Cat. Aided by Man-At-Arms, Duncan (the slightly older scientist and Adam's mentor), his adopted daughter Teela (Captain of the Guards and Prince Adam's aide), the quirky & comic Orko (the little floating magician) & Ram Man (kind hearted, but slow "human battering ram") with his winged ally Stratos, the team faced the forces of evil. The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull entrusted Prince Adam with the Sword of Power to defend the magnificent kingdom of Eternia and Grayskull - said to hold the powers to rule the entire universe.
Heading the forces of darkness was Skeletor, the evil hooded skull face, residing on the dark side of the planet in his powerful fortress, Snake Mountain. While the savage, dim-witted Beast Man, who possessed telepathic control over many animals was his right hand; it was Evil-Lyn, the incredibly shrewd witch who played on Skeletor's troop for sheer convenience, only to assume power for herself at the right moment. The cyborg-like Trap Jaw, aquatic warlord Mer-Man, and the three-eyed, pan-visioned Tri-Klops completed Skeletors army.
The show ran for two seasons, of 65 episodes each - hence the DVD release of each season has been split into 2 Volumes each, over the next 2 years. Initially, many of the stories put our heroes against Skeletor, revolving around Castle Grayskull. As the series grew the adventures took them to many different locations and foes, often putting characters on both sides of the battle. Sometimes criticized for being too dark & violent for its time, this claim seems a little redundant in today's age of children's graphic animation. Particularly note-worthy is that each episode ended with one or two of the characters presenting a moral from that episode's tale - the consequences of thoughts & actions, which makes the series particularly relevant given the times we live in. For fans of the show - its a great chance to relive those golden moments of childhood, & hopefully it will open the door to a whole new generation of fans, adults & kids. Get ready to feel the power of Grayskull!

-33 digitally remastered episodes

Sixteen Candles (1984) Review

Sixteen Candles (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to agree with the reviewer who complained about the "butchered" soundtrack. I grew up with "Sixteen Candles" -- I've seen it so many times I practically know it by heart -- and the songs are as much a part of the movie as the dialogue. I wonder if someone forgot to get permission to use some of the songs when the original movie was released -- but that wouldn't explain the cheezed-up "muzak" version of the opening credit music. And why substitute "Strangers in the Night" for "New York, New York" as background music for the post-party conversation between Jake and The Geek? The replacement music, as a whole, seems thrown together -- the songs are obviously meant to sound "almost like" the originals but for anyone who really knows the movie "almost like" just doesn't cut it. The most awkward moment is when the family is leaving the house the morning of Ginny's wedding. In the original version of the film, David Bowie's "Young American" is playing in the background as the family piles into two cars. In this version, there is NO music playing -- the family enters the cars in silence. What used to be a funny, quick scene now seems agonizingly drawn out.
"Sixteen Candles" is still a great movie, of course, and I'm glad that I have it in my DVD collection. But I found myself cringing every time a song was changed -- I could barely concentrate on the diaglogue at times. (I don't know what I would have done if the Thompson Twins' "If you were here" was replaced at the end of the movie; thankfully, it wasn't.)

I love Chuckie! He's such a great character that I never get tired of watching! This is a great collection with 3 great movies. In order from the best to worst: Child's Play 2, Bride of Chuckie, Child's Play 3. If a movie had a horrible plot, if you put Chuckie in it, I would be willing to watch it... Chuckie just adds this sort of funny yet scary and evil combination that adds humor and greatness to any movie. Whatever you do, just don't .... with the Chuck!

Disney's DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp Review

Disney's DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In 2006, Disney released DuckTales The Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp onto DVD for the first time in region 1 areas. However, instead of giving it a wide release, Disney decided to offer it exclusively through the Disney Movie Club. Later that same year, it also became a potential reward through their new Disney Movie Rewards program. Although some of Disney's DMC/DMR exclusives have since gotten wide releases, DuckTales The Movie has yet to do that.
The disc they've released is rather lightweight. Although it's still a steal for Movie Rewards members, the $19.99 it demands on the Movie Club seems about $5-$10 too high. (This isn't counting the prices poor suckers are paying for it on eBay or Amazon Marketplace, not knowing all that you need to do is join the Disney Movie Club to buy it.) The only bonus feature is a game that you won't play more than once. That's it. Not a trailer, not a featurette, not a cartoon featuring Huey, Dewey, and Louie - nada. It's not a matter of space - on a DVD-5 disc, you have room for at least 4.35 GB of data. This DVD only uses 3.31 GB. Disney, you COULD have put a little more on here.
However, the movie's transfer is very well done. There's occasional heavy grain, dirt, scratches, and the like, but for the most part, the transfer is nice and clean. And the 2.0 Dolby Digital Stereo track gets the job done.
All in all, I can't say that you shouldn't get this DVD if you have a chance. Just having the movie on DVD is worth the price you pay, but it would have been nice if Disney had treated us to a few more bonus materials on this DVD besides a game that's fun, but likely won't be played more than once.
