Species (1995) Review

Species (1995)

While the film itself is a love it or hate hit kind of thing (as far as the story and actors and whatnot), I would like to rate the actual quality of the disk and what separates it from the dvd version.
The Blu-ray version of this movie is much better than all the other version. Better quality images, better quality sound, and you even get a cool glimpse into Giger's creative process with a extra on the blu-ray that shows him creating the "evil train" sequence.
Personally, I liked the movie - but I think what most people want to know is, is it worth buying the blu-ray version vs. the dvd version and the answer to that question is DEFINATELY!

Personal Effects (2009) Review

Personal Effects (2009)
Average Reviews:

This plays more like an indie flick, and you wouldn't think so with a cast like Michelle Pfeiffer, Ashton Kutcher and Kathy Bates, but in order for this picture to be evaluated properly it needs to be understood that this isn't a fast paced Blockbuster movie, but rather a moody, slow character piece with an unraveling beautiful love story in the subtext. Ashton Kutcher plays a young man whose sister was brutally raped and murdered. He's a silent, but tough guy who has trouble with communicating what's really going on underneath. He's a man's man. He does an impeccable job at conveying what he's thinking just by watching his face and his eyes. I've never seen him do more honest acting work than in this film. Michelle Pfeiffer is a true gem in this, not just a stunning beauty, but she brings a great spirit to the screen and with her character, showing raw emotion to charismatic and charming humor. She plays a woman whose husband was killed by a friend with a gun. Ashton and Michelle's characters have that first common understanding between each other when they meet at a group therapy session for those that lost someone close to them. They slowly begin to develop a friendship that later grows more intimate, clinging onto one another in an underlying way to connect with someone they can relate to. Michelle's character has a deaf son who holds a lot of bottled up anger and rage over his father's death, but is befriended and helped by Ashton's character taking him out of pain and into new heights. Ashton has his Mother played brilliantly in a small, but significant supporting role by Kathy Bates who is raising her daughter's daughter. The love story aspect between the two leads is very real, honest and sexy, poignantly done. This is a sleeper, a slow methodical and feel good piece on loss, love, friendship and family. I don't consider my five star giving for this overly generous, it's five stars for the kind of movie that it is, for this kind of genre, a unique film about the human condition.
There's a scene between Michelle Pfeiffer and Ashton Kutcher that is so erotically charged, practically everything, but taking off their clothes that I'm surprised they didn't give this an NC-17 just for that. The three leads show some absolutely incredible dramatic realism. Kathy Bates should've got some kind of award acknowledge for this one, but if only someone could've put it out there and market it.

Beethoven's Big Break (2008) Review

Beethoven's Big Break (2008)
Average Reviews:

As a kid, I grew up with the first two Beethoven movies! In my opinion, they are the only worthwhile films in the 'series' I was confused as to what this is supposed to be. Is is the 6th film and a writer happens to guess everything that happened in the original classic, or is it a prequel that shows how the first was made. It does have some cute and funny moments, and I liked Cesar Millan's cameo. Eddie is an animal trainer, but he doesn't want anything to do with dogs. His son, Billy runs into Beethoven and he wants to keep him. Soon, Beethoven gets a part in a movie based on his life from the original. I'd probably recommend BEETHOVEN'S BIG BREAK!!!

Halloweentown High (2004) Review

Halloweentown High (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Halloweentown Trilogy is just as entertaining for adults as it is for children. I began to wonder if Disney would or could tie up the Halloween tales with a third and final installment. I can honestly say that once I got over the fact that the young cast had grown considerbly, I was happy to note that the storyline was just as entertaining as the others. Much praise goes to their writing team!! Disney has truly made modern classics out of these. The special affect of Grandma Aggie's bag turning into a crocodile is quite a computerized jump from the less sophisticated bag in the first movie. But all the movies seemed to have their own area of computerized magic.
It would be hard to choose favorites out of the three. They are all so wonderful, but if I had to: Halloweentown would be my favorite with Halloweentown High second and Kalabar's Revenge coming in a very close third. Nothing beats the excitement and sense of childhood adventure that could be experienced in the premier movie. But, Disney has out done themselves on giving each installment it's own unique storyline to capture the viewer's attention.
This is a nice clean trilogy with no gore or verbal language to worry about. I do not consider it one of those teeny bopper High School movies, since High School is just the setting not the true story line. I do wonder why Sophie's character was cut back more and not involved in the problem solving part of this movie as compared to others. (Maybe her schedule was not as open for her to come back?) The storyline did NOT suffer from this though. It was a joy to see the entire cast back together again. I am very happy to finally get a dvd set of these movies, since the only way I have watched them is taped off Disney. I will watch them a hundred more times!!!! I highly recommend this trilogy to families and school Halloween parties everywhere!

I am a die-hard S&TC fan. I absolutely LOVE the show - and will definitely buy the 6th season disks - but COME ON!!! Haven't we (S&TC fans) shelled out enough dough for this show. Not only do we have to pay just to watch the show, but we buy the merchandise as well. The fifth season was ok - but full price for an 8 episode season? And now they're breaking the 6th season in 2 releases and charging full price for both? HBO - thy greed runneth over - WAY over!

Midsomer Murders: Set 14 Review

Midsomer Murders: Set 14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(if you are shopping for season 14, then I assume you know the basics already; still I am including the show outline in the PS paragraph; hope this helps)
This is such a LOOOOOONG wait, but...I thought I would share a few thoughts on the upcoming episodes: Death and Dust, A Picture of Innocence, They Seek Him Here, and Death in a Chocolate Box (eps 56 thru 59). All four were originally aired on British TV from May 2007 to May 2008. The US Feb 2010 DVD release date means we are more then two years behind. Ghrrrrr.... Still, I believe these episodes are well worth the wait: Barnaby himself becomes a murder suspect (!), MM's trademark inventive murder tools make an appearance (including a guillotine!), and we see the return of Simon, Cully's (Barnaby's daughter's) intended. Alas, Cully's wedding (episode 60) is still a long time coming (according to Acorn, set 15 has a tentative release date of June 2010, and set 16 of Oct 2010; we will have THREE sets, rather then the usual two in 2010!!!).
As excited as I am for season 14, according to Brian Tru-May, the show's executive producer, there are many well known actors interested in guest starring in future episodes, including Michael Caine, Roger Moore, and Johnny Depp (!!!). I hope this great show goes on forever! ;o) Still, no word on who is taking over for John Nettles when he retires...
UPDATE (Feb 10, 2010): Nettles' replacement has been revelaed. I have included the details in Set 16 review.
PS: For those new to this British masterpiece, Midsomer Murders is a long running "who done it", based on the novels of Caroline Graham, starring John Nettles (of the Bergerac fame) as the unflappable Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby. The series is set in the fictional Misomer County, which comprises of many cosy, rural villages, where wealthy and poor alike seem to do each other in at an average rate of three to four bodies per episode. The series has a worldwide following, not in the least due to the creative and macabre ways in which the MM victims are typically dispatched.

WHAT EVIL LURKS BEYOND THE WELL-TRIMMED HEDGES OF MIDSOMER…
The cozy villages of Midsomer County reveal their most sinister secrets in these contemporary British television mysteries. Inspired by the novels of Caroline Graham, modern master of the English village mystery, the series stars John Nettles (Bergerac) as the unflappable Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, with Jason Hughes (This Life) as his earnest, efficient protégé, Detective Sergeant Ben Jones. Guest stars include Stephanie Cole, Gareth Thomas, Christopher Fairbank, Richard Hope, Peter Eyre, Chris Barrie, Matthew Marsh, and Clare Higgins.
THE MYSTERIES Death and Dust--The impending marriage of a widowed doctor and a well-to-do divorcée motivates a murder of mistaken identity. Picture of Innocence--In the midst of a “shooting war” between rival camera clubs, someone tries to frame Barnaby--and definitely not for a portrait. They Seek Him Here--Heads roll, quite literally, when a movie crew begins filming an adventure classic set during the French Revolution. Death in a Chocolate Box--A long-buried scandal reemerges to haunt two of Barnaby’s former colleagues, now the managers of a halfway house.

Balto (1995) Review

Balto (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Balto is one of the most amazing animated features of all time, easily ranking with the best of Disney's efforts such as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King." However, this 1995 animated classic from Universal was buried like a dog bone at the box office, and hasn't achieved the popularity it deserves even in the home entertainment market. Perhaps this is the reason that Universal decided to create a remarkably underwhelming DVD version. This is quite possibly the worst DVD I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of DVDs in the two years I've owned a player.
The biggest problem with this release is the movie-to-DVD transfer: not only is it poorly done and grainy, but the DVD executives at Universal decided to release it exclusively in fullscreen pan and scan format with a 1:33:1 aspect ratio which never even comes close to doing the stunning visuals justice. The greatest asset of DVD, even greater than all of the room on each disc for extra features, is the widescreen capability, allowing the film to be experienced at home as it was in theaters, with up to 30% more picture presented to the left and right of the screen. Fullscreen reformats the film for 1:33:1 televisions and in doing so cops out up to one third of the original widescreen picture, thus diminishing the epic splendor of many shots. As do many animated features, "Balto" offers many stunning visual effects that would look absolutely amazing in widescreen, and yet Universal refuses to release the film as it was meant to be seen. I love this movie, and it pains me very greatly to say that as it is, this DVD isn't any better than the original 1996 VHS version I have.
The extra features here include a very unthoughtful, low-tech game clearly designed for the youngest children (although I can't imagine that anyone old enough to comprehend the movie would be interested in such a dry, boring game.) The production notes and cast and crew bios are nothing much either. The only true plus in this area is the theatrical trailer.
As if this was not enough, Universal attached a forced-view preview for "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial" to the beginning of the DVD, and it must be viewed every time you start the movie. There is no way to skip it, and although "E.T." is one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time, it starts to get on your nerves having to watch the preview EVERY TIME you want to watch Balto.
DVD is the home entertainment medium of the future, and is important on several levels. When a DVD disc is made well, it does a number of things: a) presents the film in question in the best possible picture and sound available, b) gives the viewer interesting information regarding the film, such as how it was made, c) entertains the viewer with its extras and d) does all of this in an easy-to-use, easy-to-navigate, enjoyable system. This DVD is certainly easy to use, but it fails to deliver on all other fronts.
With this release, Universal is telling people that the film does not deserve a disc equal to even any decent one on the market today, let alone the best of the best. I have been a loyal fan of this film ever since I first saw it in summer 1995, and find this highly insulting. They will be receiving a nasty letter from me shortly for this underwhelming disc, and my only hope is that Universal will correct these mistakes in the future with an anamorphic widescreen edition featuring thoughtful, interesting bonuses such as "The Making of Balto" and audio commentary. Until then, don't let the utter horridness of this release stop you from seeing this underrated gem of a movie, which I recommend very highly. The film itself is an amazing five-star work of art in every sense, but sadly its digital debut is dreadfully disappointing.

Legally Blondes (2008) Review

Legally Blondes (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Legally Blondes is a really good movie. Granted it's not as good as the original Legally Blonde movie but hey it's still really good.
This movie is about Elle Woods twin cousins (Annabelle and Isabelle Woods) who come to town from the UK. Their father just got a teaching job in California. Elle Woods does NOT make an appearance in the film BUT she is talked about a lot in the film. In fact the twins and their dad stay in Elle Woods house and there are a lot of paintings of Elle Woods and Bruiser displayed in the house. The girls go to the same Prep school as Elle so they are well known by the principal and not well liked by her and some of their classmates. One of the girls gets accused of cheating (I think it is Isabelle) so Annabelle and their friends have to present a case and evidence to prove that Isabelle is innocent. Watch the movie to see if the girls and their friends can save the day.
There are some similarities about the Legally Blonde movies and the Legally Blondes movie. Elle, Annabelle, and Isabelle all love pink, they all have chihuahua's as pets (in fact Elle buys her cousins the dogs), and all three movies involve law type cases.
Legally Blondes is aimed towards kids and teens but I am a young adult and I found it to be a really good movie. It had a really good storyline and the acting was good as well.

In Treatment: Season Two Review

In Treatment: Season Two
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'In Treatment: Season Two', is as riveting as season one. Gabriel Byrne, as Paul, continues as the impassioned psychologist, dealing with a new set of patients. He sees a female college student with lymphoma, a boy whose parents are divorcing, a female attorney who he was his patient twenty years prior, and an aging company CEO . Meanwhile, he continues to have both clinical supervision and personal counseling with Gina, Diane Wiest.

Paul struggles with many of the same issues that were difficult for him in season one - - boundaries with patients, his marriage, his relationships with his children and anger and dissatisfaction with his personal and professional life. On top of that, he is being sued by the father of a patient from Season 1.
TV series do not get any better than this. As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I can vouch for the authenticity of the sessions. Therapists are human beings and 'In Treatment: Season Two' reminds the viewer of this with every episode.

The Soloist (2009) Review

The Soloist (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie is primarily about the relationship between the weary journalist and the homeless artist, and Downey and Foxx give great performances. It sensitively deals with issues of charity and friendship in ways that challenge conventional ideals, and I liked the fact that in the end, Downey's character seems content to stop playing the role of "rescuer" and instead lets events play out to their natural conclusion. In fact, Foxx's character, for all the mental distress he faces, seems more grounded at times than Downey's character, and you might wonder whether the soloist refers to the cello virtuoso or the journalist who seems to learn what it means to be a friend rather than going solo through life. In that respect, it's a show that operates effectively on more than a superficial level.
Now if they could just have spent a little more time coaching Foxx on his fake cello-playing skills...alas.

Milk (2008) Review

Milk (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gus Van Sant has always been an excellent if somewhat eclectic director. Although I have enjoyed his previous efforts, I was somewhat apprehensive when I heard he was undertaking a film biography of Harvey Milk. A gay figure of this importance, I thought, should be handled by someone a little more mainstream. Like many gay people, I am weary of gay-themed films that reach no one beyond a gay audience, and the message I would want to emerge from a film about Harvey Milk should be heard by everyone.
As if reading my mind, Mr. Van Sant has fashioned a film that is accessible to all, while approaching his subject with sharp focus and a singleness of purpose that is at once definitive and topical. A stunning achievement, MILK manages to make its point without ever being preachy or trite, while remaining as true to the facts as any film bio could ever hope to be.
The film opens with snippets of gay history that many young gay people, let alone a straight audience, may be shocked to discover. During the opening credits, a barrage of vintage film clips remind us that a scant 50 years ago, gay men, lesbians and transsexuals were subjected to violence, harassment, physical abuse, arrest and humiliation by the very people that most citizens look to for protection; i.e. the police and judicial authorities. The newsreel images of gay bar raids that open MILK project a surreal yet somehow eerily familiar atmosphere that seems to alternate between the bizarre and the barbaric. Many people today are not aware that, in the 1940's and 1950's, right here in the USA, gay people were arrested for simply patronizing a gay bar (newspaper headline: "Den of Perverts Busted"). Many of those arrested had their names and employers published in the morning paper (!), and often found themselves unemployed and unemployable, branded with the label of "deviate". It is this chilling fact of social injustice that clears the way for the film's swing into a very important piece of gay history.
Skillfully telling us the story of Milk's rise as a leader in the Castro Gay Community of San Francisco, Harvey Milk is seen throughout the film as a living, breathing flesh and blood person. Van Sant adroitly propels Sean Penn through a warts-and-all portrayal of a frail human being with an idealistic bent and a politician's savvy. As with any good film, it is difficult, if not impossible, to discern which is more impressive - the balance of a perfect cast and lovingly detailed direction weave their way through a seamless portrait of an important historical figure, yet we are somberly reminded that many people remember Harvey Milk solely for the "Twinkie" defense of his star-crossed killer. The end result is that gay audiences emerge from seeing this film with a sense of pride and purpose, while straight audiences leave with a better knowledge of who we (gay people) are, what we want, and what we are struggling for. By word of mouth I expected a thrilling cinematic experience; what I got was a surprisingly near-perfect motion picture and some of the best acting I've ever seen. I heartily recommend MILK to any straight person who wants to get a grasp on what the last 30 years of gay history were really all about, and any gay person who wants to feel good about themselves. MILK is a triumph. See it.

Meet the Parents (2000) Review

Meet the Parents (2000)
Average Reviews:

I wasn't really sure what to expect with Robert De Niro in a more comedic role and the so-so reviews of Meet the Parents. Well, let me be the first to tell you that all theses reviews were wrong and De Niro shined in his role as the father. The toilet humor of There's Something About Mary is still present in Meet the Parents--I won't give any of it away since the shock factor is what makes these scenes so hilarious. Ben Stiller is wonderful as Gregory, the misguided yet well-intentioned boyfriend of Jack's daughter. This movie had so many well placed comic moments that I never really stopped laughing. Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller make such a great pair because of the fact that they are such polar opposites. De Niro's paranoia feeds Stiller's own paranoia and makes for a lot of awkward but humorous confrontations. Their misunderstandings range from the hidden meaning of "Puff the Magic Dragon" to premarital relations. Mixed in somewhere within the gags and the shock humor is a nice romance story that is somewhat generic but never overshadows Stiller and De Niro's relationship. Meet the Parents is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time and I implore you to see it.

HIP HOP ABS DVD Set - 6 Workouts Set Review

HIP HOP ABS DVD Set - 6 Workouts Set
Average Reviews:

I used to exercise regularly, about 30-60 minutes a day five times a week. However, when I graduated from college and lost my free gym membership, I fell out of the habit of exercising. What's more, I tore an oblique muscle a couple years ago that still acts up when I try to do crunches on the floor, and I can't run anymore due to an old knee injury. I had been looking for a good at-home workout that would not strain my knees or my side, but I figured that'd be impossible to find. I had seen Hip Hop Abs advertised last spring, but like many people, I was skeptical of any infomercial workout that looked like so much fun. Still, after months of feeling desperate to get into shape again, I read up on Hip Hop Abs on a variety of online product review sites. After seeing that the majority of the reviews were overwhelmingly positive, I threw caution to the wind and purchased the first Hip Hop Abs package: Secret to Flat Abs, Fat Burning Cardio, Total Body Burn, Ab Sculpt, plus Last Minute Abs and Hips, Buns, and Thighs.
I have to say, this is one of the best investments I've ever made -- what a great program! The workouts are strenuous enough that you work up a good sweat but not so exhausting that you can't move the next day (though you totally "feel the burn"). Even better, my knees are fine with this program, and amazingly, my oblique has not acted up either. Shaun-T has absolutely infectious energy and is a great motivator -- he makes the workouts fly by (seriously, 30 minutes feels more like 10), and he's really funny to boot. I started to see results after the first week: my legs, stomach, and shoulders were much firmer, and my jeans fit noticeably better.
UPDATE: I've now been on the program for about two and a half months, and I still love it just as much as when I first bought it.
Fat-Burning Cardio (30 minutes): This workout is really fun and the perfect length to get your heart going without totally wearing you out. The more I do FBC the more I learn how to make the movements work best for me, and despite having done this workout three or four times a week for the past two months, I still find myself smiling and feeling like I'm working my muscles anew every time.
Total Body Burn (45 minutes): This workout lives up to its name; it is absolutely exhausting, but it's the one to go for when you really want to work up a sweat. This longest workout in the package keeps you moving for the whole 45 minutes by incorporating cardio with weights and working every part of your body (abs, arms, legs, back, buns). I consistently "feel" this workout the day after.
Hips Buns & Thighs (25 minutes): This has a lot of movement to it and will definitely get your lower body burning, especially your inner thighs and glutes. There's a lot of arm movement in this as well, so your whole body gets a workout. Warning: the mat exercises will likely make your thighs feel like they're on fire by the time you finish, but it's worth it.
Ab Sculpt (25 minutes): This definitely works your abdomen (lots of standing crunches), but the moves also give your thighs and arms a workout as well. There's not as much outright cardio involved in this as in the other workouts, but it's good for muscle-building (I like using it as a compliment to Hips Buns & Thighs).
Last Minute Abs (5 minutes): If you are looking for a quick way to get your heart pumping that will consequently make you feel like you're doing to drop dead, look no further than here. This workout is only five minutes, but each one of those minutes is DIRE. I could not even finish this one the first time I tried it, but I've since been able to make it through (though I usually still feel like I'm going to drop afterward!).
Though all of these workouts are challenging in different ways and will definitely work your body, the best part of them all is Shaun-T. He keeps cheering you on every step of the way and inspires you to keep going even when you don't feel like you have any steam left. Sticking with Hip Hop Abs has been the easiest workout commitment I've ever made.

Open Season 2 Review

Open Season 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had high hopes for this one as animation can look so pristine in BD, but I was in for a shock. Sony Animation was behind this, but it had the whole Cartoon Network look to it instead. The main voice talents from the first film did not come over, nor did any of the writing/production staff (and it shows).
The story is just ok, entailing friends helping and rescuing each other with plenty of adventure and rabbit abuse. One of the main characters is a dachshund so apparently the "wiener" humor is what passes for hilarity these days. While it has been playing in the store kids of all ages are entranced by it but the parents haven't been thrilled with the parts they have seen. The "..that lady pulled my wiener.." and "..my beautiful rack.." lines raise a few parent's eyebrows so it hasn't exactly been a hit like I had hoped.
The BD supplements are painful, including "deleted scenes" which were hand sketched and not worth the time. The "Weenie Arcade" has a horribly spliced "Who Let the Dogs Out" video by the Baha Men, a how to draw the animals tutorial, and a featurette about the faces behind the voices.
I loved Hoodwinked, even with that style of animation, and OS2 looks similar in nature (no pun meant) but is much less of a quality film. I have read where people say this an ideal family film, which nothing really offends me so I would watch it with my kids, but needless to say I lost a few rentals playing it in the store. And for a BD, not one of the memorable ones.
