(More customer reviews)I have been very impressed with Paranormal State for many reasons. They do more than go into a situation and find evidence of spirits, a haunting, etc., they then try to solve the problem. They don't just say - "yeah, you've got a ghost, bye now." They help the family understand what is happening and why, they help the spirit move on (or not, if the family decides letting it remain is the right thing to do). It is all handled with sincerity and professionalism and great decorum. When they do "dead time" and ask questions (hoping to get answers on the EVP recorder), they don't bombard the entity with questions, they ask a question, then give it an opportunity to respond. They don't joke around when on site. They don't yak to each other. They focus totally on what they are doing. They are so polite and caring. Chip Coffey, the medium they bring in on some of the cases, is wonderful. He is very talented and I like him a lot. Although I do enjoy Ghost Hunters, too, the two series are as different as night and day. I look forward to Paranormal State II coming out on DVD as well when the new season ends.

Paranormal State is the very first series that explores paranormal investigations through the eyes and minds of college students. This series follows the dramatic life of Penn State University college student Ryan Buell and the other student members of one of the first university sanctioned Paranormal Research Society (PRS) as they seek to find the truth behind terrifying real life mysteries. Although the members of PRS are your basic college kids - dealing with the problems of school, dating, and finding their way in the world - they are definitely looking into other worlds as well, working on cases that include poltergeists, haunting and the darkest areas of the unknown. Each week they are contacted for help by outside parties ranging from The Catholic Church to ordinary families who are terrified by something supernatural happening in their lives.

The Soloist (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie is primarily about the relationship between the weary journalist and the homeless artist, and Downey and Foxx give great performances. It sensitively deals with issues of charity and friendship in ways that challenge conventional ideals, and I liked the fact that in the end, Downey's character seems content to stop playing the role of "rescuer" and instead lets events play out to their natural conclusion. In fact, Foxx's character, for all the mental distress he faces, seems more grounded at times than Downey's character, and you might wonder whether the soloist refers to the cello virtuoso or the journalist who seems to learn what it means to be a friend rather than going solo through life. In that respect, it's a show that operates effectively on more than a superficial level.
Now if they could just have spent a little more time coaching Foxx on his fake cello-playing skills...alas.

Girl, Interrupted (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Winona Ryder is back from several years of lull in any highly memorable roles in major movies, and she is right on form with possibly her best performance yet. But that is certainly not all this movie has to offer. She plays Susannah Kaysen, an inpatient for a year at a mental hospital, who wrote the book about her real life story on which this is based. Not only Susannah but several of the other inpatients are most memorable characters. Angelina Jolie won Best Supporting Actress for playing Lisa, a sometimes menacing and always interesting patient there because of her anti-social personality. Other quite meomrable characters include a pathological liar who is Susannah's usually sweet roommate, played by Clea DuVall, and the Sullen and obsessed Daisy, who will eat nothing but chicken from her father's rotisserie, played by Brittany Murphy. Through her own struggles and interactions with the others, Susannah confronts in a memorable way some of the hot issues of the late 1960's, making this almost a nostalgia trip as well as a riveting human drama.

ABC News 20/20 Schizophrenia Review

recommended this 16 minute segment from a 20/20 television show as a good way to try and understand how the mind of a mentally ill person perceives things.
A group of scientists at Yale University developed a visual reality device that one puts on their head to see and hear as if you have schizophrenia. It is an intense video showing a very extreme case of delusional processing. There are schizophrenic persons explaining their form of this illness.
This CD is informative and worth viewing. It, in itself, is not enough of an education if one is seeking answers about this terrible disease. It does, however, add a greater clarity to what it does to a person.
