Species (1995) Review

Species (1995)

While the film itself is a love it or hate hit kind of thing (as far as the story and actors and whatnot), I would like to rate the actual quality of the disk and what separates it from the dvd version.
The Blu-ray version of this movie is much better than all the other version. Better quality images, better quality sound, and you even get a cool glimpse into Giger's creative process with a extra on the blu-ray that shows him creating the "evil train" sequence.
Personally, I liked the movie - but I think what most people want to know is, is it worth buying the blu-ray version vs. the dvd version and the answer to that question is DEFINATELY!

Uptown Kittens Review

Uptown Kittens

Peach and Red Dragon Releasing make excellent dvds and 'Uptown Kittens' is no exception. It's a very sexy dvd and I'm glad I picked it up. This is the most recent release from Peach that I've acquired, and right now, it's pretty cool. There are five models featured here this time: Jamie Lynn, Erin Avery, Heather Carolin, Lela Star and Kina Kai. I purchased this one specifically for Heather Carolin, who is a former 2002 Playboy Playmate and a red-head lover's dream come true. She's smokin' sexy to me and it's great to see her get the true, full erotic treatment she deserves here. Just under an hour runtime with basically a chic, uptown, luxury 'loft' living theme for ambiance. Good lighting, excellent camerawork and shots and the usual languid posing Peach connoisseurs have come to expect. Since only five models are featured here, four of the five appear in two vignettes (only Lela Star has just one scene), and the feature culminates with Jamie Lynn and Heather Carolin pairing up in the final vignette for a red-hot, ultra-sapphic, lesbian lickdown that's sure to send most red-blooded male viewers into meltdown! We never really get to see any real, actual depictions of cunnilingus and therefore it can't truly be categorized as XXX, but it comes close. A great Peach release with good replay value. Highly recommended.
Oh, and while I'm at it, two personal grievances I have with Peach's dvds in general I feel like I gotta address:
1) One common element present not just in 'Uptown Kittens' but almost all of the Peach dvd releases that annoys me to no end is the fact that in nearly all of the features, the models all strip fully naked but still insist upon wearing their high-heeled shoes. Why the hell do they so stubbornly insist upon constantly keeping their shoes on??!! Is it so their feet won't get cold???!!! Geez .... somebody help me out here! Is it too much to ask for them to shed their footwear, too??? The shoes are fine if you're making a video that has a high-heel fetish theme to it, but in EVERY release it kind of starts to get annoying.
2) And by the way (and this one is directed to Peach Studios and Red Dragon Releasing, specifically), on a personal note of constructive criticism, Peach definitely needs to, um, DIVERSIFY its pool of models. As any regular viewer of Peach videos has noticed, there's a conspicuous lack of women of color in the videos ------ specifically black women. Nearly all of Peach's mainstay models are almost exclusively white. Sure, there's a few Asian and Latina chicks here and there and even an occasional gal of mixed ethinicity, but I think I have yet to see an actual, real, 100% bonafide black model appear in a Peach release. Mostly the lineup is about as lilly white as it can be. As a man who appreciates the female form in ALL of its colors and shades, I think it's very important to have ALL of those colors represented in these otherwise great feature presentations. Let's celebrate sexiness in all its colorations. Note to Peach: I implore you to please come out with an exclusive, all-black model dvd release or at least start adding in black models along with the white ones in future releases, okay? Just sayin'.

Rita's Playdates - Female masturbation - Girls Night Out Review

Rita's Playdates - Female masturbation - Girls Night Out

First off, none of these women will be considered nines or tens by soft porn aficionados--more like sixes to eights, depending. Any perfectionist or retentive viewer will find imperfections in the models' bodies that would disqualify them from the virtual or real pages of PB/PH, etc. Perhaps one of these babes would even be described by this group using the dreaded term skanky--& that may be enough for them to pass this up. If so, they'll miss out on QUITE a show.
For those able to let go of the need to see nines/tens, I think you'll find a nice variety--both in looks & sexual personas--of sizzling gals who all do their very best to please.
(For the record, four of the six have implants, two have tattoos, & two have pierced tongues. Five use dildos in their sessions.)
Tara is the only model who's forty-something, but she's very hot, & is obviously a body builder who knew just when to stop.
It's the overall drop-dead sexiness of their performances that make this a standout: the show-us-everything attitudes; the willingness to draw us in with lots of eye contact (& with one, some dirty talk); & the no-holds-barred intention of inviting us to share their ever-so-personal autoerotic joyrides into exhibitionistic pleasure.
Another word on variety: We're treated to a pleasing array of different attitudinal flavors, if you will, from session to session. I would name them sassy, wild (two of them), intense, demure & sultry. If this diversity was intended, I'm impressed; if not, we got lucky--it adds to the overall enjoyment.
For those who feel like the segments in other productions are too short, you'll be thrilled to find that this disc offers a very generous 15-20 minutes for each woman---& I'd be willing to bet that the slo-mo & pause buttons will get much more use than the fast-forward for the average viewer.
This one's a keeper for sure.

Swimming Pool (Unrated Version) Review

Swimming Pool (Unrated Version)
Average Reviews:

This film creeps up on you and is absolutely spellbinding. It's the simple story of an aging mass-market crime-fiction writer called Sarah Morton (Charlotte Rampling) who rambles off to the French countryside to find relaxation and hopefully inspiration for her next-in-the-series mystery book. While staying at her publisher's luxurious yet quaint summer retreat, she is confronted by his young daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). Subsequently, all sorts of wild, unpredictable mischief ensues as the prim and proper Englishwoman clashes with the sexually carefree vixen, who evolves into an unexpected muse to the older woman.
My pal Oscar and I have spent the summer watching a number of French films, and one thing we both have learned and agree on is that for the most part, unlike most mainstream American films, they are mostly unpredictable. SWIMMING POOL is no different. Just when I thought I had it figured out, a number of odd plot twists move the narrative down an unsettling and unforgiving path until a sensitive and poignant ending reveals tragic truths about life, getting old, and the whimsy of youth that can be difficult for the young to face but which in many ways are empowering to those getting on in the years. If the film instructs anywhere, it is in the wisdom that we are only as old as we feel.
Expect tantalizingly erotic moments, mostly surrounding Ms. Sagnier's natural sensuality. There's plenty of eye-candy here, and in the viewing, one cannot help but feel strangely connected to the voyeuristic tendencies exhibited by Sarah as her dismal stoicism slowly disintegrates. Indeed, much of the film's tension and eroticism is experienced through the characters' eyes.
Ernest Hemingway said, "I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen." Surely the realm of the author is also to look, and more importantly, to see, as sharply illustrated by Sarah Morton's experience. In the end, her book may be the better for it -- to the possible chagrin of her publisher. Thus in some way, the film has much to say about the way literature is produced (through a "sexual" creative act) and how authors are oft times stripped of soul, reduced to rote formula, marketed, sold and neglected in pursuit of the next best selling author down the pike. In the film, Sarah attempts to transcend this trend through her collision with the young Julie (and in her fictional portrayal in the book she is writing).
Expect to be somewhat dismayed by the ending, but give it a moment, put the pieces together and it will all make sense. It's shear pleasure to enjoy a film these days that doesn't fill in the blanks for the audience, and this little gem is a clear winner. The fine acting betrays the taint of sentimentality. The sublime beauty and vivid verisimilitude of the setting and cinematography enhance the overall cinematic experience, and in more than one instance will leave the viewer breathless.
Some might complain that the film seems to meander, but this is true of many French films I've seen. This one is no different. Rather than commit to a rigid narrative form, the film appears more like a painting, with rich textures and colors folded onto the canvas in layers. Each scene builds on the last, every moment touches the next. The film is an experience as much as it is a story.

9 to 5: Days in Porn (2010) Review

9 to 5: Days in Porn (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This film turned out to be quite a bit better than I expected. It was well put together in terms of editing and was shot very well. The shots within the film did a great job of illuminating the explicit physicality behind porn shoots without actually showing so much that it felt like I was watching a porn video (not that there's anything wrong with that!!). I suppose my initial concern was that this film would come across as a "dirty" little glimpse into the world of pornography, but it was actually a detailed account from various perspectives of very different individuals that are all involved in the same business, and it is just that, a BIG business. The description and visual representation of the performers were interesting to see because this film does a good job of painting a a detailed picture in which every star is so very different. Some of them are exactly what someone might expect; damaged, bizarre, and lonely, while others live pretty normal lives and possess all the coping skills to separate work from home life.
The depiction of the directors was pretty cool too, because you would expect that they are all a little on the weird side, and they pretty much are, but on very different level. Seeing an insider look at Jim Powers was really cool because that guy gets such a bad rep and then you see what he has to work with, and the fact that he's just an old school punk that wants to do his own thing. I guess my only complaint with the film is that there wasn't a focus on more controversial directors, yet, I suppose that would be for a different type of porn doc film all together.
Portions of this film are a little sad, and I expected them to be so, but it is all just a picture of the lives that these people have chosen to live. I will say in closing though, that the footage of Bella Donna and Sasha Grey was great. I find these two women to be inspiring in what they do, and the way they conduct themselves and their business while doing so. These women have come to understand that the world of porn will chew them up and spit them out unless they take it all into their own hands and do with it as they please. Taking complete creative control of their careers and the products that they turn out. The world of business is still a male dominated world, and the business of porn is certainly no exception. The women are the selling point and the product, but the guys make all the decisions and really, make all the money as well. These two women are fantastic exceptions to the rule and set an example of how any actress involved in porn should conduct themselves.

The Blue Lagoon (Special Edition) (1980) Review

The Blue Lagoon (Special Edition) (1980)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In 1980, when this film was released, there was quite a bit of controversy, most of it ill-founded. There were complaints about incest, but the two children are not brother and sister: Emmeline clearly addresses Arthur Lestrange as Uncle, while Richard calls him Father, so the closest they could be is cousins, and the use of Uncle may have been conventional (indicating guardianship) rather than literal. There were complaints about showing a 14-year-old actress nude, but they used body doubles for all of the nude scenes (Brooke Shields spends some of the commentary pointing which body double was used for which scene).
I'd guess that opinion about this film polarises into about three camps. There are those who are shocked / scandalised (let's hope they don't buy the DVD and be shocked and scandalised all over again). There are those who are titillated by the nudity (such a shock for them to learn that they are looking at a 30-year-old woman, rather than a 14-year-old!). And then there are those who can see past all that to the sweet, innocent love story that the film is really all about.
The plot is fairly straightforward. A man, Arthur Lestrange (William Daniels), is taking two children, Emmeline (Elva Josephson) and Richard (Glenn Kohan), from Boston to San Francisco by sailing ship around the turn of the century (the date is not specified). Because the Panama Canal doesn't exist yet, they must travel right down to the bottom of South America to get around. After rounding the bottom, there's a fire aboard - something that is a serious concern, but in this case it is worse, because it is in a hold containing blasting powder, so the passengers are rowed away from the ship. In the confusion, the children are separated from Arthur Lestrange; they end up in a boat with Paddy, the ship's cook (Leo McKern). To make things worse, a heavy fog rolls in, the ship blows up, and they are adrift by themselves.
Luck (and the scriptwriter) is with them, and they awaken within sight of an island. They are very fortunate to discover that this island has fresh water, ample fruit (bananas, papayas, and coconuts, amongst others), and is generally a tropical paradise. Paddy shows them various useful skills, including the construction of a hut, and collection of food, before dying. Now two fairly young children (I'm guessing they are under ten years) are alone. Years pass, and Richard (now Christopher Atkins) and Emmeline (now Brooke Shields) are coping fairly well with the basics of feeding themselves, but they are going through a variety of traumas as their bodies change. Matters like Emmeline's first period are not glossed over - it's easy to see how terrifying that could be for a young girl with no idea of what is happening to her. Emotionally, the pair are still children, and they squabble and tease one another just as children do. There are a series of events (nope, I'm not saying what) that split them apart, then bring them back together. Yes, they do learn about sex, and that is also handled sensitively - it could have come across as pornographic, but it doesn't, it comes across as tender and caring. The consequences are handled well, too. Bear in mind that these children, back on the ship, were still at the "cabbage patch" stage of sex education...
Providing you have a broad enough mind not to be scandalised by the nudity (which is utterly appropriate to the setting), this is a sweet love story set in a tropical paradise, a study of innocence, with enough drama to add seasoning. Recommended.
