The Burton Snowboards: For Right or Wrong (2007) Review

This was a very interesting DVD as it shows what it is like behind the scenes for these professional snowboarders. It gives you a personality to put with each of the riders. If you are expecting a more tradional snowboard video then this might not be what you're looking for. While it shows a good amount of riding it is not tradional in the sense of stock snowboarding clips set to a soundtrack. Overall a good DVD though.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) Review

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
Average Reviews:

Many kids
Enjoy Christmas
They like it a lot
And this film
Is about the Grinch
Who did not
The film gives the background, and fills in some blanks
The Grinch as a child was subjected to pranks
He fancied a Who, with the name Martha May
He tried to impress her and to his dismay
They laughed at his efforts, his gift and his face
So he destroyed the classroom and fled from that place
Then,
He moved to Mount Crumpet
And made him a home
While the green hairy creature seethed under the dome
Until one cold day at the town Christmas party
When young Cindy Lou showed him how to be hearty
Then Mayor May-Who went and spoiled all the fun
By taunting the Grinch 'til he came all undone
He went up his mountain, and he started scheming
And when he was through he was smiling and beaming
He'd ruin their Christmas; he knew what to do
Revenge is the sweetest when it's overdue
If you've read the story you know how it ends
How the Grinch stole that Christmas from his former friends
So what happened next?
I won't give it away
This Christmas this movie will show every day
So if you're a Grinch you can run, but not hide
As you try to stifle the feeling inside
Just gather the kids for a clean yuletide treat
Merry Christmas to all!

Joel Harper's Fit Pack - Nine Short Workouts Review

Joel Harper's Fit Pack - Nine Short Workouts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For every person of limited means, time and space who has had to listen to someone tell them that they won't be able to get in shape unless they spend hundreds of dollars on gym memberships and/or large (or small) home equipment as well as devote over an hour per day- this is for you.
Fit Pack has nine different workouts that clock in at 30 minutes or under- for the most part, under. Included are workouts for Chest, Back, Shoulders, Abs (two of them), Legs, Buns/Glutes, Cardio and a Combo workout that has a little bit of everything. The only "equipment" required is a mat (which you could get away with not using for most of them) and sneakers for the Cardio workout. I really, really like the workout choices Harper made. If you've got something of a gym mentality, you can work your body parts by day, starting with maybe Chest on Day 1, Back on Day 2, Shoulders on Day 3, etc. without overworking your muscles (and since you're using your gravity and your body weight only, that would be unlikely in any case). Or if you're looking for a total body workout, you can use the Combo workout or combine some of the other workouts if you want a longer workout. It's very flexible.
Harper clearly has a yoga practice of his own. Many of the exercises, particularly for the upper body, have recognizable yoga postures and movements- some Down Dog variations for the Chest, Cat extensions for the back, and some tough Side Planks for the Shoulders. In addition to integrating yoga into calisthenics, he also adds some twists I've never seen before (and I've been using "the latest and greatest" at home for quite some time). I found many of his Leg exercises to be very innovative, particularly his take on the One-Legged Deadlift. That move is always a killer, but he found a way to make it that much harder.
The Chest, Back, Legs and Advanced Abs had me near tears. I'm a proud, stubborn person, but I dropped some of the reps on the pushups and a whole bunch on the Advanced Abs. Even with that, I have to say that the Advanced Abs was the hardest abdominal workout I have ever done. I have not felt that worked over- for days afterwards- since my very first Pilates class. Tough, tough, tough.
The Abs, Buns and Cardio workouts are shorter than the others, between 17/18 (Abs) and 6 (Cardio). I would recommend using those in combination or adding them onto the other, longer workouts (or just doing them on their own- as I said, the Abs are tough). The Buns workout is also pretty difficult; I felt that for about two days as well. Actually, the Chest workout is about the same length as the Abs, but I'd recommend treating that as a standalone workout that complements the Back workout, since it works your Chest pretty hard.
Here's hoping that this isn't the last we see of Harper and his no-equipment, no-time workouts. If there is a volume 2, I'd love to see: longer, lower-impact cardio (this one has a lot of jogging and high impact, and sometimes my downstairs neighbors just aren't as accommodating as they could be); a Combo 2; and a stretch routine (which, given the yoga, shouldn't be too hard). But in the meantime, this release should keep me plenty busy.

9 to 5: Days in Porn (2010) Review

9 to 5: Days in Porn (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This film turned out to be quite a bit better than I expected. It was well put together in terms of editing and was shot very well. The shots within the film did a great job of illuminating the explicit physicality behind porn shoots without actually showing so much that it felt like I was watching a porn video (not that there's anything wrong with that!!). I suppose my initial concern was that this film would come across as a "dirty" little glimpse into the world of pornography, but it was actually a detailed account from various perspectives of very different individuals that are all involved in the same business, and it is just that, a BIG business. The description and visual representation of the performers were interesting to see because this film does a good job of painting a a detailed picture in which every star is so very different. Some of them are exactly what someone might expect; damaged, bizarre, and lonely, while others live pretty normal lives and possess all the coping skills to separate work from home life.
The depiction of the directors was pretty cool too, because you would expect that they are all a little on the weird side, and they pretty much are, but on very different level. Seeing an insider look at Jim Powers was really cool because that guy gets such a bad rep and then you see what he has to work with, and the fact that he's just an old school punk that wants to do his own thing. I guess my only complaint with the film is that there wasn't a focus on more controversial directors, yet, I suppose that would be for a different type of porn doc film all together.
Portions of this film are a little sad, and I expected them to be so, but it is all just a picture of the lives that these people have chosen to live. I will say in closing though, that the footage of Bella Donna and Sasha Grey was great. I find these two women to be inspiring in what they do, and the way they conduct themselves and their business while doing so. These women have come to understand that the world of porn will chew them up and spit them out unless they take it all into their own hands and do with it as they please. Taking complete creative control of their careers and the products that they turn out. The world of business is still a male dominated world, and the business of porn is certainly no exception. The women are the selling point and the product, but the guys make all the decisions and really, make all the money as well. These two women are fantastic exceptions to the rule and set an example of how any actress involved in porn should conduct themselves.

Kathy Smith's Kickboxing Workout (1999) Review

Kathy Smith's Kickboxing Workout (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WOW! I love this tape. I usually don't do a review after one workout, but I really enjoyed this. It went by so fast too. This is probably the best retail tape you can find and I am usually not a Kathy Smith fan (although I like her book) at all (Aerobox is the only tape I like and she doesn't lead it). Also surprisingly Keli Roberts, who recently released a kickboxing video, is in the tape with Keli and actual leads a little segment (as well as her co-star Keith Cooke). First there is an instructional section that explains the different kicks and punches, but if you've kickboxed before there are also pointers in windows throughout the video by the Kickbox expert she got, Keith Cooke, who is kinda like a Keanu Reeves looking guy. Then you have a ten minute warm-up/stretch (yes Billy Blanks could take a few lessons here). The warm up does the punches and knees in mini combos with a pretty good stretch. She also includes elbows up over the head which is one of my favorite upper body moves. You then have a 25 minute aerobic section with lots of simple, but fun combos. Keli and Keith each teach a little segment. There are jabs, crosses, elbows, hooks, front kicks, side kicks, roundhouse AND back kicks in various combinations. She also does boxer's weaves and shuffles. Then there is a brief cooldown and onto drills. The drill section utilizes a straight back chair and you do a lunge front kick combo on each side. These are controlled and more for flexibility and strength. Then a back kick. Switch legs and do the same thing. Onto side kicks and round house, and then other side. She then does a pretty thorough stretch utilizing the chair. Now I have only done the tape once but it seems she forgot to stretch one hip flexor, but I could be wrong (like I said only done it once). Then she has a "bonus" five minute segment of back/ab stabilization strengthening. Very much like Abs and More by Keli Roberts and similar to the plank in Power Kicks. Then it's onto your hip and you do these side kick crunch things on each side, and it gets tougher when you extend your arm. The music is pretty good. The set is a boxing ring with the ropes missing, but not dark like in Aerobox or Kick Butt with Kristoff St. John. I think this video is great for beginner through intermediate, advanced would probably need to do more power or tack this onto another tape. For the low-cost this is a great intro to kickboxing or a great addition to any collection IMO.

Easy Freestyle Swimming by Terry Laughlin (2008) Review

Easy Freestyle Swimming by Terry Laughlin (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few weeks ago, a friend convinced me to do a sprint triathlon with him in a few months. Soon thereafter, I decided to go to my gym's pool to see how far I could swim, just to gauge how much work lay ahead. I already knew *how* to swim (via years of lessons at the Y) but figured I needed to work on my fitness level. To my shock, at the end of maybe 75 yds, I had to stop. I was exhuasted, gasping, and had a heart rate through the roof. Even though I'm in decent shape, i figured I must be out of shape for swimming. So to the gym I went, faithfully churning out lap after exhausting lap, trying to kick and splash my way to fitness. But part of me knew there was something wrong. I would see the 65 year old guys doing lap after effortless lap and thought there must be a better way. Well, THIS is that better way. The TI system was recommended in Joe Friel's "Your first Triathlon" and his highly regarded "The Triathlete's Trainig Bible" as well as in "Chi Running".
Now there's nothing magical or mysterious about the TI system. Some of it is just sound swimming technique known by others for a long time (eg looking down, body rotation, streamlining, etc). But there are other aspects that seem to be unique to TI. Where the system really shines is in the step-wise approach and skill-specific drills to building a smoother and more efficient stroke. It's broken down so logically and systematically that one can't help but to improve one's freestyle stroke by simply trying to execute its lessons.
The DVD itself is of decent quality, more than adequate to accomplish its goal. While a couple of the video sequences look as though the camera operator was drunk, it is mostly well-filmed and it is easy to see the details of the drill that is being explained. They are shot both above and below the water and from multiple angles, sometimes even using split screens to enhance understanding. The music and graphics are a little cheap but who really cares. Before a pool session, I usually watch a chapter while taking notes. Then I bring my notes with me to the pool (in a ziplock bag) to jog my memory of the important points I need to keep in mind. This really works but it's not magic. You'll have to drill, be patient, and get to the pool regularly.
While the DVD itself will be sure to improve your stroke, I think the weekend TI workshop is extremely helpful in making sure you're doing the drills properly. Until you see underwater video of yourself, it's really hard to get an accurate sense of how efficient your stroke really is.
All in all, an extremely useful DVD for anyone (especially triathletes) who wants to improve their freestyle. Highly recommended!

Freestyle: Made Easy Review

Freestyle: Made Easy
Average Reviews:

The book (Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier) and DVD aren't completely aligned, but do supplement each other well. Actually, I probably wouldn't recommend the DVD without the book.
There are two extremes of swimmers that would likely be interested in this swim method: complete beginners looking to start swimming and experienced swimmers looking to examine this method. Like most, I was somewhere in the middle (after being told by a swim coach that I looked like I was being electrocuted in the water, I thought that this relaxed style of swimming would be a good remedy).
Beginners will instantly see the value; it starts at the very beginning with active floating. Experienced swimmers will need to be prepared to start at the very beginning as well, as Terry Laughlin (correctly) sees a need to break down established patterns of movement in order to build new muscle memory.
My freestyle has become significantly more relaxed. Of course, I still have a long way to go to becoming a proficient distance swimmer (practice, practice, practice), but this video has helped eliminate a lot of bad habits so that the practice is actually beneficial.
One criticism (aside from the somewhat cheesy production): proper flutter kick is nearly ignored. Although it's not the primary source of propulsion for efficient swimmers (e.g., Terry only kicks once per stroke), it's still a significant supplement when wanting to swim fast. It would have been nice to see it addressed more in the video.

Andy Goldsworthy's Rivers & Tides Review

Andy Goldsworthy's Rivers and Tides
Average Reviews:

For those who are not familiar with Andy Goldsworthy's work, he creates sculptures from nature, using rocks and tree branches and grass and anything else around the location he has chosen. He has decided specifically to create scultpures that will only stand temporarily, as he searches for a better understanding of life, death, and the passage of time. This film does a fantastic job of exploring the creative process and amazing things that can happen when an artist continues to experiment and look for new opportunities. Through this discovery, Goldsworthy passes on to us his philosophy and unique perspective on the world. It is truly a visually beautiful film and worth watching on that merit alone. For those of us who are artists, it is a must-see, both to learn and identify with someone who has a beautiful understanding of the world.

Wildly praised by the nation's top critics, the smash theatrical hit RIVERS AND TIDES is a mesmerizing, poetic and curiously contemplative portrait of revered Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, whose long-winding rock walls, icicle assemblages and other intricate, druidic masterpieces are made entirely of materials found in the wild.Gorgeously shot and edited by director Thomas Riedelsheimer, RIVERS AND TIDES is an intoxicating study of the fragile relationship between man, art and nature.

The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns (1990) Review

The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There aren't too many productions from television that one can call "noble," but Ken Burns' The Civil War qualifies. Burns uses photographs, music, speech, maps and historical context to tell the story of the second most formative event in the nation's history. And since in those days people wrote...diaries, letters, journals...there is the written record not just of the great leaders, the politicians and generals, but of the wives and sweethearts, the nurses and doctors, newspaper editors and farmers. Most of all there are the words of the soldiers. Burns shows the importance and the sweep of the war, but in part he does it through the lives of average people caught up in events they may not have completely comprehended, but which they believed in.
If the words themselves have power, so do the voices. Burns recruited great voices, some actors, some not, to speak the words, distinctive voices that give great resonance to what we see. Julie Harris as Mary Chestnut, Charlie McDowell, a Virginia reporter, as Sam Watkins, Arthur Miller as William Sherman, Jason Robards as Grant, Studs Terkel as Benjamin Butler, Sam Waterston as Lincoln, and many others. He has David McCullough as the narrator. McCullough, an outstanding historian and writer, does a wonderful job. Burns also uses a number of historians to underline key points. Foremost, in my view, is Shelby Foote. Foote is the author of the epic three-volume Civil War. With his Southern accent, common sense and soft irony, he's a fascinating raconteur.
The program is never dry or dull. It is gripping and emotional. Both sides felt they were fighting for a pure cause. What is particularly touching is that, as a people, we had not yet lost much of the capacity for simple, unadorned, unembarrassed feelings, whether it be patriotism for one's country or love for one's wife. I challenge anyone to read this letter from Sullivan Ballou, a 32-year-old soldier in the Union Army, to his 24-year-old wife, and not sit stunned with emotion. Ballou was killed in the first battle of Bull Run a week later.
July 14, 1861
Camp Clark, Washington
My very dear Sarah:
The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days-perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more . . .
I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing-perfectly willing-to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt . . .
Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.
The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me-perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness . . .
But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again . . .
--------------
The program flows over 11 hours on five discs. In addition to the documentary, the discs are stuffed with background information...maps, documents, biographies and additional interviews. This is a superb production and is worth every penny.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey: Season One

I promised I would not buy this because I have seen it a million times on Bravo but of all the "Housewives" franchises, New Jersey is my favorite! Atlanta used to be but there is something more genuine and organic about the drama between this particular group of ladies. I'm anxiously waiting for Season 2 to begin next month for even more table flipping!
I love the relationship between the sisters Caroline and Dina. With their sister-in-law Jacqueline and close friend Theresa, the odd "woman" out is Danielle. You really want to root for her but there's something about her that makes that a little difficult. I don't know if her past has hardened her (which it more than likely did), but her caustic and biting tongue are a little hard to take at times.
If you haven't checked out this series, indulge just once...you may also love love love it!

Pilates - Beginning Mat Workout (2005)
Average Reviews:

I've kicked my rating up one additional star for this one reason: I have been doing this tape everyday for 2 weeks and I can truly see and feel the difference. My stomach, waist, and hips are getting stronger by the day and are visibly more slim. My pants are definitely baggier in these areas and I can see definition in my stomach, and this is after only 2 weeks. Also, I feel stronger in these areas as well as my thighs. Much less joint pain and creaking going on down there, as well. The most signifigant aspect of this rapid improvement is that *you do not break a sweat when you do this workout*. Additionally, it's short, approx. 20 minutes, so I don't feel as though I'm wasting any part of my schedule by doing it. Another bonus is that you don't need any special workout gear, clothes, shoes, scary contraptions, etc. It's just you, the mat, and Ana.
I do have one recommendation for new users: get yourself one of those sticky mats that we use for yoga. The Living Arts company, the very same group that puts out this video, has one. Also, be certain to get Brooke Siler's book in order to understand the poses to their fullest.
That's all I have to say. I just love this workout.
