Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown, and don't come back (1980) Review

Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown, and don't come back (1980)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Followed by Race for your Life, Charlie Brown (1977), this heavily critisized, classic 1980 Peanuts full length adventure is probably the best of the lot. Perhaps some of the critizism is true, but still, the film is tons of fun. The story is endearing, memorable, the music is cool, the characters are classic and adorable and the feel is creepy, yet absolutely wonderful. This is darker than all previous Peanuts films, but not as depressing as A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969) or Snoopy Come Home (1972).
The story begins when a little French girl named Violet sends Charlie Brown a letter inviting him to come visit her old chateau in the French countryside. Coincidentally, that's when both Charlie Brown and Linus are invited to be part of a student exchange program that will take them over to Europe, Snoopy and Woodstock come along as well. At another school nearby, Peppermint Patty and Marcie are also taking part in the same student exchange program, so the group of six travels together. Once there, Peppermint Patty and Marcie are welcomed in the home of a little farm boy named Pierre, while Linus and Charlie Brown are surprised to find that when they arrived at the Chateau of the Mal Voisin, there's nobody there to greet them and they soon enroll in a mystery in which some history of the Brown family will be revealed!
What made this film so much fun was the whole atmosphere of it, it wasn't at all like previous Peanuts films, this one was much gloomier and slower, but super fun. A lof of scenes are plain hilarious, such as a scene which has Peppermint Patty attend school at the French schoolhouse and Snoopy's visits to an old tavern. The whole journey to Europe is wonderful, I love every second of it, it brings me a lot of memories of when I first watched the film, the nicest part here being the soft and sweet song "I Want to Remember This." This film was quite creepy and gloomy, I thought, and it did break a lof of classic Peanuts themes such as adults actually speaking and Marcie's calling Charlie Brown "Chuck" instead of "Charles," not to mention Charlie Brown actually receiving a letter.
Both A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969) and Snoopy Come Home (1972) have greenlit DVD releases coming up soon, so why aren't Race for your life, Charlie Brown (1977) and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and don't come back!) (1980) seeing a DVD edition soon as well?

Doug's 1st Movie (1999) Review

Doug's 1st Movie (1999)
Average Reviews:

I used to watch the show Doug on Nickelodeon religiously as a little kid. At the time I was entertained by its charm and honest humor, but later on in life I realized some thing truly special about the show: all the things Doug went through as a teenager, I went through too. The show really did showcase a lot of real life situations through its characters. That was probably what the real joy of the show was.
Then things went wrong. Disney bought it.
What got changed? Patty gets a lesbian hair-do (I seriously thought at first she had suffered from leukemia and was regrowing her hair). Roger is rich (why?!?!? why make the school bully rich?). Skeeter gets cheeky (literally). Smash Adams is a clown. The Beets leave. Their grade jumps around from what it originally was in the TV show. Finally...there is no longer that honesty that I saw in the original show. There is no great metaphor for life, just the typical whacky adventures that have become so redundant. In the end all we get is a dried-up moral we've seen before. If I want that, I'll catch an after-school special. Or any thing else the Disney company has done.
I realize there was a reason Nickelodeon never made a Doug movie. It just wouldn't work. It was fine as a TV series back on Nickelodeon, then it was nabbed and butchered, and now we have this horrid hour and a half travesty on its name. This is truly a sad day for animation...

Dr. Seuss: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) Review

Dr. Seuss: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

I recently purchased this DVD and was immensely disapointed with the quality of the transfer. The colors were all over he place with the Grinch appearing as a yellow, then brown and finally slightly green creature. The transfer is terrible. I would not recommend it to anyone based upon this poor quality.

The Little Mermaid (A Walt Disney Classic) Review

The Little Mermaid (A Walt Disney Classic)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While "Beauty and the Beast" may have nominated for BEST Picture, "The Lion King" may have captured the world's attention, and "Aladdin" may have soared with a Robin Williams-voiced genie, "The Little Mermaid" still stands as the landmark film that brought Disney animation to the forefront.
The first of the studio's modern-day musicals, "The Little Mermaid" has it all: a feisty heroine, a faithful mentor/protector, a slightly off-center sidekick, a hunky leading man, a Godlike father, and a villain at the peak of wickedness.
The vocal performances by Jodi Benson ("Ariel"), Kenneth Mars ("King Triton"), Samuel E. Wright ("Sebastian"), Buddy Hackett ("Scuttle") and Pat Carroll ("Ursula") are, without a doubt, the best ever heard in a Disney film. Able-bodied vocal support is given by the always-dependable Rene Auberjoinois as a set-upon French chef.
The songs ("Under the Sea", "Part of Your World", "Poor Unfortunate Soul", "Kiss the Girl") are Broadway-worthy.
It's a shame that the film is not in circulation at the moment. It is truly one in need of remastering and "special edition" status with extras.

I saw this in the movie theater in 1964 and it still puts a smile on my face. It is funny and fun to watch with Yogi, Boo Boo, Cindy and Mister Ranger. Grab a pic-a-nic basket and sit down and enjoy a great movie.
