(More customer reviews)Of the three newest Walt Disney Treasures DVD packages, this is perhaps the lesser known, but it is by no means the least important. It's what used to be known as "rip-roaring" great adventure, produced on a rich, grand scale unheard-of during the period in which it first appeared.
"Dr. Syn," which was based on British novels and legends explained on a fascinating documentary also included on disc one, is a Robin Hood or Zorro of sorts. But the difference is that Dr. Syn is a highly respected minister who completely fools the pompous bad guys. Yet, in this three-part series, the villains are fleshed out and not caricatured. The dignity and seriousness of the drama holds up beautifully today without the slightest sense of cliché.
In this 2-disc set, you get all three WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR hours with introductions by Walt himself, plus the edited feature-length version released theatrically in Europe in the 60's and then in the U.S. in the 1970's. But the aspect ratio of the original print has been restored for this release so you'll even see the television versions in more depth than before, with gorgeous restored prints and sound that especially brings out the lush musical score (I wish it was on a separate track!)
And speaking of music, you'll get to see who sings the haunting "Scarecrow" theme--Terry Gilkyson, who also wrote "The Bare Necessities," along with George Patterson and The Wellingtons. The only detail left out is that The Wellingtons are best known for singing the Gilligan's Island theme in its first season (there's more about them in "Mouse Tracks").
The other mini-documentary traces Walt Disney's long and fruitful live-action movie enterprises in the United Kingdom with comments by several of those involved including director Ken Annakin. It's great that the live-action part of Walt Disney's art is getting recognized and appreciated.
Most of all, if you are a fan of the TV classics The Prisoner or Secret Agent, you have to have this because Patrick McGoohan is in top form in this film, even to his remarkably varied speaking voice which transforms his character as much as his mask.

Disney's DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp Review

(More customer reviews)In 2006, Disney released DuckTales The Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp onto DVD for the first time in region 1 areas. However, instead of giving it a wide release, Disney decided to offer it exclusively through the Disney Movie Club. Later that same year, it also became a potential reward through their new Disney Movie Rewards program. Although some of Disney's DMC/DMR exclusives have since gotten wide releases, DuckTales The Movie has yet to do that.
The disc they've released is rather lightweight. Although it's still a steal for Movie Rewards members, the $19.99 it demands on the Movie Club seems about $5-$10 too high. (This isn't counting the prices poor suckers are paying for it on eBay or Amazon Marketplace, not knowing all that you need to do is join the Disney Movie Club to buy it.) The only bonus feature is a game that you won't play more than once. That's it. Not a trailer, not a featurette, not a cartoon featuring Huey, Dewey, and Louie - nada. It's not a matter of space - on a DVD-5 disc, you have room for at least 4.35 GB of data. This DVD only uses 3.31 GB. Disney, you COULD have put a little more on here.
However, the movie's transfer is very well done. There's occasional heavy grain, dirt, scratches, and the like, but for the most part, the transfer is nice and clean. And the 2.0 Dolby Digital Stereo track gets the job done.
All in all, I can't say that you shouldn't get this DVD if you have a chance. Just having the movie on DVD is worth the price you pay, but it would have been nice if Disney had treated us to a few more bonus materials on this DVD besides a game that's fun, but likely won't be played more than once.

(More customer reviews)From the writer and producer who has worked on popular animated titles such as "The Fairly Odd Parents", "Danny Phantom" and "Family Guy" comes the Disney Channel series "Sonny with a Chance" starring pop star Demi Lovato.
The series started airing on February 2009 and I have to admit that among the Disney Channel shows that I have watched with my son, "Sonny with a Chance" is actually quite enjoyable and highly entertaining.
The series revolves around an Internet star named Sonny Munroe (Demi Lovato) who is from Wisconsin. She and her mother Connie (Nancy McKeon, "Facts of Life") move to Hollywood for Sonny's first major television role, to be part of the popular sketch comedy show "So Random!". Joining her on the show is the diva Tawni Hart (Tiffany Thornton), the comedic best friends Nico (Brandon Smith) and Grady (Doug Brochu) and the youngest member of the group, and also quite odd at times, Zora (Alllisyn Ashley Arm). Along with the show's producer Marshall Pike (Michael Kostroff), the group comes up ideas for their sketch show for the week and trying to maintain their grades in school.
But all is not easy for Sonny, which she soon discovers. Her castmate Tawni who likes all the attention to her self is not so thrilled she has to share the show with another girl and also, the cast of the teen drama "Mackenzie Falls" led by actor and teen hearthtrob Chad Dylan Cooper (Sterling Knight) have been at war with the cast of "So Random!". Testing Sonny's allegiance since she is a big fan of Chad but now part of a show despised by him and his castmates.
For "Sonny with a Chance: Sonny's Big Break Vol. 1', the series comes with the following episodes which are not in broadcast or production order. Here are spoiler-less summaries:
* EPISODE 1 - SKETCHY BEGINNINGS - Sonny joins the cast of "So Random!" and meets her castmates for the first time.
* EPISODE 2 - WEST COAST STORY - Sonny meets actor Chad Dylan Cooper (who she admires) of the teenage drama "MacKenzie Falls" but quickly learns of the rivalry between the cast of "So Random!" and "MacKenzie Falls".
* EPISODE 5 - CHEATER GIRLS - Sonny and Tawni have a great idea for a sketch for "So Random!" but because of Sonny's bad grade in a class, she is pulled off the show unless she shows improvement.
* EPISODE 3 - SONNY AT THE FALLS - Chad Dylan Cooper and the cast of "MacKenzie Falls" come up with an idea to get back at "So Random!" by causing friction with Sonny and her castmates.
"Sonny's Big Break Vol. 1' also comes with a bonus episode:
* UNAIRED EPISODE - SONNY IN THE MIDDLE - Sonny buys Nico and Grady a video game chair as a present for their birthday but the guys get into an argument over who will play in the chair that their friendship becomes torn and each of them look towards Sonny to be their new best friend. As of this time, this episode is only on this DVD and has only been shown on Delta flights and has not aired on television yet.

"Sonny with a Chance: Sonny's Big Break Vol. 1' is presented in full screen (1:33:1) and audio is presented in Dolby Digital Stereo Sound (and also includes the Spanish language track). Subtitles are in Spanish.
It's important to note that "Sonny with a Chance" is the first Disney Channel Original Series to be shot and aired in High Definition. It would be great to see Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment possibly release the whole series on Blu-ray in the near future.

JUDGMENT CALL:
When I first watched "Sonny with a Chance", I was actually quite impressed. Personally, the whole show based around a sketch comedy was quite intriguing, especially since I grew up watching shows like "You Can't Do that on Television" and it helps that one of the executive producer's for the show also was involved with a real sketch comedy show "All That". The characters are fun and wacky and the rivalry with another teen show also makes up for interesting storylines for the show.
So, as an adult watching this comedy series, I was highly entertained. As for children, my son absolutely loves the show and the fact that the cast has many hilarious moments definitely keeps the series fun and entertaining from beginning to end.
For the most part, I think fans of "Sonny with a Chance" or the stars of the show will enjoy the DVD. If I had one thing to nitpick, its the fact that other DVD releases include two bonus episodes, for this release, you only get one.
But other than that, I really enjoyed the series and of the majority of the teen or children comedy shows that I have watched and reviewed, "Sonny with a Chance" is high on my list for recommendation!
Parents looking for a safe and hilarious show for their children or fans of Demi Lovato or the cast members of the show, "Sonny with a Chance: Sonny's Big Break Vol. 1' is highly recommended!

With the Christmas holiday season around the corner, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is releasing "Phineas and Ferb: A Very Perry Christmas" featuring six episodes and plenty of special features.
"Phineas and Ferb: A Very Perry Christmas" comes with the following episodes. Included are:

If anything, the series is known for its unique character design and for the most part, the animation is quite enjoyable to watch because it's quite different with the characters and their geometric shaped heads.
Dialogue and music are clear and are heard clearly through the front and center channels. Subtitles are in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

JUDGMENT CALL:
At our home, somehow "Phineas and Ferb" has become my 7-year-old son's favorite animated series. Every day he watches the show and interesting enough, I can hear both he and my wife singing the show's theme song and even my wife has talked about how she enjoys watching "Phines and Ferb" alongside with him.
As for me, I knew nothing about the show and I felt like a kid asking my son many questions of who is that character and that character and what is the plot of the series? So, this DVD was actually my first foray into the world of "Phineas & Ferb" and for my son, this DVD was in his words..."Awesome!".
Because truthfully, I just thought it was a special Christmas episode and then when that episode was done, there were five more episodes to watch. And then you get to the main menu and there are Easter Eggs hidden throughout the menu, special features and you get another bonus episode of "Phineas and Ferb", how cool is that?
Although, I may not have grasped the concept of why Phineas and Ferb's older sister Candace is trying to bust her little brothers or why there is a secret agent platypus, I realize that this series is beloved by many, and my young son and my wife are among that demographic who love this series so much that I hear them singing the theme song nearly daily.
The episodes I did watch were fun but of course, my son can probably give the best description of this DVD and he just had one word to describe this DVD and that was "awesome"!
As a parent, the episodes were safe and fun to watch and I have to admit, for a children's DVD, Disney has definitely released an impressive package with six episodes of "Phineas & Ferb" and many special features to go along with this entire DVD. I was very impressed by this DVD and I can definitely recommend this to parents or grandparents who want to keep their children entertained during the holiday season or a DVD for them to watch during those long holiday commutes.
Overall, this is a solid release of "Phineas and Ferb" which fans of the series can't go wrong with it and really, there is nothing I can even fault or say anything negative about because you get so much in this DVD release. For fans of "Phineas and Ferb", "Phineas and Ferb: A Very Perry Christmas", my son gives this DVD five stars and a very big "AWESOME!".

The Black Hole (1979) Review

(More customer reviews)People would kill me if they read what I'm writing about "The Black Hole". However that's the way I feel about it. This movie was a flop at the box office and most critics weren't so gentle with it. But I really enjoyed this campy sci-fi flick from the Walt Disney Studios for many reasons:
1. I was overwhelmed by the teaser trailer (too bad it's not included on this DVD) where the green grid is moving all over the screen, ending with the Black Hole logo swifting and twisting in black. Awesome!!
2. The black and yellow logo in some of the posters, the one shown on the DVD case.
3. The U.S.S. Cygnus. WOW!!! What a beautiful ship.
4. The robots. Maximillian truly looks menacing. And V.I.N.CENT and Old B.O.B.; the cutest robots since "Star Wars"'s R2-D2.
5. The cast of outstanding performers: Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, and Roddy McDowell as the voice of V.I.N.CENT.
6. John Barry's majestic score.
7. The final scene, inside the black hole. Those images. Those visual effects. John Barry's music.
This movie might have had some flaws at describing a space version of "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea", but this is my most cherished guilty pleasure of all time.

Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Review

(More customer reviews)For those of you who may be reading through the other reviews here on Amazon, and being turned off of this product due to all of the complaints of so-called "censorship", I feel the need to set things straight. You are not being told the whole story by the angry one-star reviews.
First of all, the missing (approximately) 15 seconds from the film has been missing since 1969. Most of us probably weren't even born at that time. So it's not like this isn't the Fantasia that we grew up with. Besides, Fantasia has undergone many edits over the years. The original theatrical version was only 81 minutes long (and included the 15 seconds of racism), the version on this new blu-ray/DVD release is 125 minutes (and does not include the 15 seconds of racism, but has 44 minutes of footage that has been restored since the original release). There have been almost a dozen re-edits of Fantasia since it's release in 1940, most of them to restore and repair lost or damaged footage, so making a big deal out of losing 15 seconds is redundant.
More importantly, if you actually saw the 15 seconds of edited film that has caused such a stir, you'd understand the need to remove it (by the way, if you're curious enough you can find the missing scenes on youtube, or do a google image search for "Fantasia Sunflower" to see the black centaur). This is no small offense. The Pastoral Symphony scene is packed with beautiful skinny centaur girls of many different vibrant colors, all with perfect bodies (at least the non-horse part) and long flowing hair. Of the many colors of centaur there is only on black one, and this one black centaur also happens to be short and goofy looking with crooked teeth, big hips, messy matted hair, and huge pail lips. To top it all off, she's clearly the servant to the other female centaurs, we first see her giving a pedicure to another centaur and then happily breathing on her hoof to polish it off like a good slave. She decorates her master centaur's flowing tail with flowers only to get comically slapped in the face by it when the master runs off to see the male centaurs coming. The last we see of her she is dutifully walking behind her master carrying a string of flowers worn like a gown. There's no doubt about it, this is racist as hell. The argument over this content is not whether or not the content is racist. We know, with absolute certainty, that it's racist. The argument is whether or not it's okay to excise it from the film.
Now I understand the need to preserve even the worst things in history, in fact, it drives me absolutely insane how many people completely disregard the fact that the founding fathers of this country were slave-owners. Just because this is a dark and abhorrent side of our history does not mean it should be ignored and that it shouldn't be in our children's school textbooks, this is stuff they shouldn't have hidden from them. I also don't think it would be okay to ban any re-release of the classic silent film "Birth of a Nation" even though it contains some of the most atrocious racism ever depicted on camera (and in a positive light, no less), it's still an important piece of cinema history and the controversy only makes it more interesting. And I even find it completely ridiculous that Disney has not yet released "Song of the South" on any recent home video format, albeit with an introduction/disclaimer to remind people that it's a product of a different time.
Be all that as it may, Fantasia is a different story, unlike the stuff mentioned above, Fantasia is not to be remembered as nothing more than a historical relic, Fantasia is still a culturally relevant movie with fans spanning many generations. It's not "Song of the South". If Disney was to release a remastered and unedited "Song of the South" on blu-ray next week, the only people to buy it would be fans of film history, it's not the kind of thing parents are going to give to their kids to watch, in fact, it would be seriously irresponsible of any parent to let their kid watch a movie that reinforces negative racial stereotypes as much as that one does. The same could be said of "Birth of a Nation" (though I doubt many kids are interested in that anyway). Fantasia is a movie that kids still love, it's timeless, it's perfect, and it would be a shame to lose it all because of 15 seconds.
What prompted me to write this review was one single review on amazon among all the negative reviews. There was one that stuck out to me, because this guy said that he would have loved to show Fantasia to his daughters, but he didn't want to show them the edited version, so he was boycotting this release. Think about that, this guy was basically saying 'I won't show this movie to my children unless it includes offensive racist material!' That's stupid. This is my point, Fantasia is a movie for children, and to include that 15 seconds of racism and market it to children would be a bad idea, even if they got Whoopi Goldberg to give an introduction to the film and forgive the racism (as many reviewers here have suggested they do) the point would still be lost on the kids, all they would see is an ugly black centaur acting as a servant to the others. Fantasia is a movie of a different time, we accept that either way, but there's two ways to deal with that, either we could preserve the racism and let Fantasia become nothing more than a relic that needs to be justified by Whoopi Goldberg before every viewing, or we can lose 15 seconds and let Fantasia remain relevant and thrive throughout the ages as a gorgeous and unspoiled piece of art.
This is one hell of a blu-ray, I can't think of any movie that can show off the technical splendor of blu-ray more than this one, the perfect combination of stunning visuals and magnificent music. I recommend this product to everyone, with a reminder that the missing 15 seconds does not diminish the enjoyment of this classic one bit.

(More customer reviews)I watched "A Goofy Movie" tonight when I was babysitting. The kids loved it and I enjoyed it too. This movie contains enough of the little things to be appealing to children of all ages...including teens...like me. I don't think I've seen a better Disney movie. This one has to be my faveorite. The music was good for people of all ages and I have been searching the internet for the soundtrack. It's not every day that you see a teenager rave about PG movie. Excellent Job Disney!
