Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List - The Complete First Season Review

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List - The Complete First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Aside from being one of the great stand ups of our time, Kathy puts her money where her mouth is and invites a camera crew to spend some time filming her, her husband, her parents, her put upon assistant Jessica(?) and her dogs while she makes personal appearances and generally tries to score free stuff. Beloved by gays for demystifying the celebrity "gift bag" and the hefty portions of celebrity dish she serves up, Griffin shows that she does not need to be onstage to be funny. Her observations are razor sharp, but she also pokes fun at herself and her celebrity status as a D list celebrity. There are still some remains of a little greasy triangle on my TV screen from my nose pressed up against the picture tube (At least that is what I tell everyone it is)during what has to be the funniest 6 hours of television- rivaled only by the second season. Here is hoping for lots of extras. Kathy has something for everyone to laugh at...er with. I'm hoping for a big gift set with the 2 (so far) seasons and all her Bravo concerts. Griffin not only dishes the dirt- she makes it taste like a five star meal! Buy it Buy it buy it!

The Three Amigos - Outrageous (2003) Review

The Three Amigos - Outrageous (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Get three of the popular Latino comedians together and you get three stand-up routines to enjoy. This isn't like as they say "the white" Three Amigos film (Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Martin Short), which was a comedy, but this 2001 comedy concert film just borrows the "Three Amigos" title in a cute way.
The first comedian up is Freddy Soto who just recently died, July 10, 2005 of unknown causes. His routine in this film is 22 minutes.
You can also see him in Deadly Swarm (2003), Spanglish (2004).
Did you know Freddy Soto use to be a limousine driver for Richard Pryor?
Next up is Pablo Francisco. Pablo makes fun of bell-wearing on scrotum, Backstreet Boys,Ricky Martin, Jackie Chan, Arnold S. and movie trailer announcers. His routine in this film is 13 minutes long. You can also see Pablo Francisco in 1996-97 of Mad TV, Latino Laugh Festival: The Show (2004).
Third time is a charm and they save the best for laugh. We first saw Carlos Mencia on the January 15, 1994 live broadcast of Comic Relief 6. He currently has a limited comedy tv series, "Mind of Mencia", on the Comedy Central Channel.
Carlos Mencia was actually born in Honduras.
Mencia's routine in this film is 31 minutes.
No extras on this DVD, but you have the option of English captions, French, Spanish subtitles or just listen in English.
Okay, I'll shut up now.

Ellen DeGeneres - The Beginning (2000)
Average Reviews:

When this special was being advertised in HBO, I thought, okay, I will watch it. She is funny enough and there is nothing else on tv. I watched it and seriously laughed so hard that my side hurt the next morning. It was Ellen at her absolute funniest (and she is a pretty funny person). She tells a story in a totally casual way and, unlike most comedians, she realizes that the key to being funny is not to laugh at your own jokes, but to keep going like you have no idea that you just said something funny. She is a true artist. Foolishly, I didn't tape it and since then I have been scanning the tv guide for the next time that it would be on. Let me put it this way, I wouldn't be buying this on-line if it was not the funniest thing that I have ever seen and didn't want to watch it over and over again.

Blue Collar Comedy Tour - The Movie (2003) Review

Blue Collar Comedy Tour - The Movie (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Blue Collar Comedy Tour isn't just for rednecks or blue collar workers- this is fun and laughter for everyone. There are no cusswords or adult content to cut out so even teenagers can watch this. Funny comedian Ron White is like a 21st century country-style Dean Martin. The other 3 comedians ( Ron White included ) along with Jeff Foxworthy also serve up their fair share of comic lines and laughs. Most people have only heard of Jeff Foxworthy due to his name & longetivity( including me until this ) but once you've seen & heard this you will want to enjoy it over & over.Great that these four comedians decided to tour together, film it & release it on video & dvd for us to enjoy.
Even you are alone you may be laughing out loud. The Blue Collar Comedy Tour was recommended to me by an African-American so it wasn't offensive to him either as he thought it funny-This is definitely not just for rednecks but for everyone. This is not just southern humor-the comedy is universally appealing. Buy it,rent it,don't miss out.You don't have to have a job with a nametag on it to enjoy this one.It doesn't matter who you are- this one's funny. It't not covered in moles. No one will literally throw you out of a place. There's your sign-You might be a redneck but you don't have to be one to laugh at this comedy.

God, is this guy funny! I have been waiting for this DVD since I first saw it on HBO and I wanted to be the first to write in to let everyone know that they will not be disappointed! Lots more great bits as funny as his first DVD show, Louis C.K.: One Night Stand. Like the first, he is raunchy, hilarious, brilliant, and he has become commonly quoted among my friends and myself. You will NOT be dissapointed with this purchase--it can be watched over and over again and you still laugh every time!

Katt Williams: American Hustle The Movie Review

Katt Williams: American Hustle The Movie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you watch American Hustle, get ready for an experience like now other. American Hustle is a meshing of a cinematic intro with the side-splitting comedy of Katt Williams and company. The feature starts with Katt getting ready for a important Hollywood meeting to discuss movie possibilities starring the up-and-coming superstar. He ultimately passes on the ridiculous movie pitches and ventures out back on the road with fellow comics Red, Luenell, and Melanie Camacho. The four comics and Katt's dog hit the road for 20-city, 40-show tour that eventually culminates to the final show in Chicago. And it is at this point that viewers are treated to the feature-length concert footage of Katt Williams. The DVD closes with Katt Williams sharing the stage and the mic with Chi-Town's own Da Brat and everybody's favorite honorary pimp Snoop Dogg.
Packaged as a theatrical comedy, American Hustle evolves mostly around Katt's stand-up, a routine that can basically be deemed Pimp Chronicles 2. The material is original and will have you laughing out loud. Although we are treated to a handful of stand-up scenes from Red, Luenell, and Melanie, it would have been nice to actually see more of their routine, if not their entire sets. But the material that we are treated to is nothing short of hilarious, with Luenell giving the funniest anecdotes of the three. And of course Katt's spin on life, love, and relationships is on par with everything else that the budding star has showcased, including its predecessor The Pimp Chronicles Part 1. With extended footage of the skit 'Brokebeak Penguins', and his spoof on the movie 300, and about a dozen outtakes, this DVD is unique in its presentation and captures the ingenious comedic styling of Katt Williams. Any fan of Katt Williams will not be disappointed with American Hustle.

Greg Giraldo: Midlife Vices (2009) Review

Greg Giraldo: Midlife Vices (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
He skillfully tricks you into believing he's just your average comedian whose performance is ridden with cliche narratives of the American cultural landscape. But you'll soon find you've been fooled. I find the more aware a comedian, the better he is. He must take risks with the audience. Sometimes he must trust that his audience is not vanilla but again we're not sick pervs either. With awareness of this, Giraldo is able to become several great comedians at once with material that is crude (Stanhope) and political (Maher, Stewart). He also does numerous pieces that make fun of our use of language, reminiscent of the late Carlin. Nevertheless Giraldo is not just a mish-mesh of other comedians, he masterly weaves everything in a special way. Each joke is not random, he's telling a story that hopefully should vibrate with the younger generations.

I saw this on comedy central several months ago and resigned to the fact that it wasn't going to be released on DVD, but here it is. Mike Birbiglia is a pure talent and this DVD shows off his comedic skills. His humor is not offensive and in your face, but talks about everyday things and stuff that he loves like pizza. He humor is self depreciating, but not in a "woe is me" kind of way, but in a way that anyone can relate to. If he ever came to Minneapolis, which he needs to already, I would not mind taking my kid to his show. My kid wouldn't understand all of the jokes, but Birbigs is clean enough that I wouldn't have to cover his ears throughout.

Bill Hicks Live - Satirist, Social Critic, Stand-Up Comedian Review

Bill Hicks Live - Satirist, Social Critic, Stand-Up Comedian
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As one who worked in comedy clubs for years and saw hundreds and hundreds of so-called comedians, I can assert that only a handful of comics make a lasting impression.
Hicks was one of those. Though I only got to see him onstage for one week's worth of shows in 1987, his body of work thankfully became more commercially available over the next decade.
Hicks is one of the rare comics with a point of view that both skewers and embraces Mankind. He loved his country and his fellow man, and that gave him license to stab and poke at their flaws. He championed THOUGHT as the means to combat Mediocrity and the Sheep Mentality.
This DVD is a sufficient look into his mastery of his craft and his unflinching control over his audience. Sometimes his control of the audience was mixed with disdain towards them, too. But it was closer to "tough love" than animosity or condescension.
Not everyone will recognize Bill's brilliance and not everyone will "get" the humor. Actually, the brighter you are the more likely you will appreciate Bill Hicks.
Buy this DVD and be elevated to a higher understanding of how the interactive medium of stand-up can be used as a persuasive pulpit not for bullying or mass entertainment but for communal introspection and self-examination.

As a bonus, the documentary "Just A Ride" surveys Bill’s remarkable career with insights from his peers; including Brett Butler, Eddie Izzard, Richard Jeni, Jay Leno, David Letterman and Thea Vidale. Comedian (2002) Review

Comedian (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Comedian" chronicles Jerry Seinfeld's return to the comedy club circuit after dismantling his sitcom in 1998 and retiring his well-honed live routines in the HBO special "I'm Telling You For The Last Time."
And though the documentary has lots of stand-up comedy, as well as appearances by comics such as Chris Rock, Jay Leno, Garry Shandling, Robert Klein and Bill Cosby, this is not really a concert movie. It's actually a glimpse into the business of entertaining and the process behind making an audience laugh. "Comedian" is a funny movie, but it's really more about the humor of anxiety and self-doubt than punch lines.

Shot on digital video by Christian Charles (who directed Seinfeld's snappy American Express commercials) and crammed with excellent jazz and pop music, the movie follows Seinfeld and a young comic named Orny Adams as they hit the road, work on new material and perform on "Late Night With David Letterman." Adams -- keyed-up and hypersensitive -- doesn't fare as well as Jerry but given that he's sharing space in a movie with one of the most popular television personalities in history, he kind of has the deck stacked against him.
And yes, Seinfeld, after being out of the spotlight for a while, does remain an interesting personality, even more so when caught on a relatively candid camera (Jerry curses?). His backstage conversations with Leno, Cosby, Rock and Colin Quinn reveal a guarded camaraderie, and fans who spent a significant chunk of the '90s chuckling at the misadventures of Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine will probably find it amusing that Seinfeld still actively worries he'll bomb in front of a crowd.
But for all Seinfeld's agonized fretting over writing jokes and winning the audience's approval, anybody who puts in 40-plus hours a week at an office probably won't find much sympathy for a guy who has been given hundreds of millions of dollars doing the very thing he loves to do.
Nevertheless, "Comedian" is a sharp, insightful, wry and occasionally stinging piece of business.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Comedian (2002)

Jerry Seinfeld is a working stand-up comic again. COMEDIAN is a candidly revealing, intimately observed, and often very funny look at what it takes to be a comedian. On-stage, Jerry delivers his hilarious brand of observational humor. Off-stage, he struggles with difficult material, confronts self-doubt, revels in small successes, and accepts help and support from friends and colleagues, including Colin Quinn, Ray Romano, Chris Rock, Garry Shandling, Jay Leno, and Bill Cosby. COMEDIAN also discovers the sharp wit of rising young comic Orny Adams -- outspoken, insecure, and fanatical about becoming the "next big thing." What emerge are two fascinating journeys by two contrasting personalities who have some surprising parallels.

Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again (2004)
Average Reviews:

The Four Knuckleheads Ride Again! If you enjoyed the first Blue Collar Comedy Tour, you will enjoy this one, too! If anything, the audience (Denver, CO) was more jazzed up for this show which added something to the production. At one point, Bill Engvall begins to crack himself up while improvising, which was funny.
Bill Engvall's - (Here's your sign!) Ironic wit is easy to enjoy and very funny. Among his bits are: DorkFish, Deerhunting with your Wife, Men are Simple Creatures, Pillow Talk
Ron White - (sober or soused?) Ron is dark, sarcastic, and mean. Among his funny bits are: Waiting for the In-Laws to die, Garth Brooks and Camping, and Trolling for a new father-in-law in the retirement home.
Jeff Foxworthy - I find Jeff the funniest of the bunch with a fresh-faced, wide-eyed, good-natured view of the absurd. His material was all new and fresh. His act included some hilarious pieces: Hoo-Hoos are Poisonous, Hunting at Home, Oreo Generation
Larry-The-Cable Guy - Git R Done! I don't care who you are, this is funny. Rude, crude, and socially unacceptable, Larry is the most juvenile of the group. His stories mostly involve his inbred, wild family: his sister, aunt, Grandma, and all the other zanies from double-wide heaven provide ample anecdotes with one-liners cascading one after another.
A lot of fun. Hope you enjoy this performance!

Average Reviews:

This isn't something to watch with your family, but if you have a strong stomach for explicit sexuality at some parts, then it's impossible not to appreciate Jamie and end up in tears. I personally liked this much more than his other stand-up DVD, "Lost, Stolen, and Leaked." He talks a lot about his career as an actor, but it's not just the words but the physicality of his performance that makes him so hilarious and inimitable. I've tried to use his jokes myself, but his facial expressions and the way he says things are impossible to duplicate. In this way, Jamie definitely emotes much more on stage than, say, Jerry Seinfeld, whom I also like. But "I Might Need Security" is my favorite stand-up show yet.
