The Shield: Season Six Review

The Shield: Season Six
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sixth season of FX's The Shield can be considered the penultimate season of the gritty crime drama. Beginning with the aftermath of Lem's (Kenny Johnson) death, Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) swears vengeance, unbeknownst to him that his partner Shane (Walton Goggins) is responsible. In the meantime, Vic faces a forced retirement, more so when younger, possibly brasher detective Kevin Hiatt (Moonlight's Alex O'Loughlin) is brought onto the Strike Team as Vic's successor. With Kavanaugh (Forest Whitaker) still lurking in the shadows and still trying to bring Vic down once and for all, things reach a boiling point as Vic comes closer and closer to learning the truth, and the reprecussions that come and are going to come in the upcoming final season. Other plot developments of this season include Claudette (CCH Pounder) adjusting to an illness, Dutch (Jay Karnes) in developments that you won't see coming, Aceveda (Benito Martinez) once again forming an uneasy alliance with Vic, and Shane offering his services to the daughter of an Armenian mob boss (Franka Potente) which he comes to regret. While the sixth season of The Shield offers nothing that hasn't been done on the show before, it is still an ever-compelling television experience that you can't get on network TV. The main cast is still good, and while Forest Whitaker doesn't stick around nearly as long as he did on the previous season, both he and Franka Potente provide for wonderful guest stars. All in all, when watching this season of The Shield, one can tell that the end is indeed near, and what develops next may very well prove that this series will go out with quite a bang.

Continuing directly after season 5, Vic and the Strike Team are distraught over Lem's death. Shane has been overcome by guilt and becomes reckless and suicidal. Kavanaugh refuses to let the case die and resorts to planting evidence and coercing witnesses to lie about the Strike Team. Dutch and Claudette begin to suspect his integrity. Vic learns from Claudette that the Chief plans to force him into early retirement — and vows to wreak bloody vengeance on Lem's killer before losing his badge. Claudette learns that the Barn could be shut down if no improvements are made by the time quarterly crime statistics are released.

Cops 3-Pack (Bad Girls / Caught in the Act / Shots Fired) (1989) Review

Cops 3-Pack (Bad Girls / Caught in the Act / Shots Fired) (1989)
Average Reviews:

Each of the three DVDs in this set is made up of two parts.
The first is a "theme" episode, with various related clips. I believe these are the same that aired on Saturday nights, as part of the hour long specials. They are bleeped and blurred.
Each of the discs also contains a 15-20 minute "Too Hot For TV" segment. They are different on each disc, but very similar in content. They contain unblurred Mardi Gras footage and other unbleeped segments. Although some of it (like car crashes shown in montage) has already aired on TV, so nothing all that "Too Hot" about it. You've probably seen it before.
The discs don't make much sense though, in that they show blurred footage of one arrest on the Bad Girls DVD, yet on the "Too Hot" segment of one of the other DVDs they show the same arrest unblurred. They should have showed the whole thing unedited rather than repeating segments like that.
As it is, most COPS fans have probably seen these episodes already. If you are a fan, who can not get enough of the show, they are worth buying.

Police Woman - The Complete First Season (1974) Review

Police Woman - The Complete First Season (1974)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In 1975, this became the hottest show in the United States and many other countries, and ALSO became the first successful drama series in TV history to feature a woman in the title role.
And although this may sound like faint praise, in an era where Emma Peel had regrettably become a faded memory, if it hadn't been for "Police Woman", there literally would have been no (albeit more-fanciful) "Charlies Angels", "Wonder Woman", "Bionic Woman" or, a few years later, muscular "Cagney & Lacey".
But suffice it to say that Season 1 of "Police Woman" is easily its best year: the show was, for the period, edgy and focused, with Angie Dickinson (then) chewing the scenery with a mesmerizing blend of toughness and effervesence; and her chemistry with co-star and onscreen boss Earl Holliman is very good as well... In this freshman season, "Police Woman" often felt like a taut, foreboding movie, both dark and sun-streaked... No wonder it went to Number One for a few months.
Subsequent seasons weren't quite the same... There was pressure to tone down Miss Dickinson's almost effortless sex-appeal, and in so caving to pressure, the series wound-up squelching her personal power and strength as well, and so the show went off-track a bit: as a result, only about 50% of the episodes of seasons 2 and 3 are really up to par, and season 4 contained just a small handful of good installments.
Perhaps all that's why the show seems to have disappeared from view for quite a while...
Regardless, season 1 is an absolutely great '70s cop show classic-- funny, dramatic, a bit shocking for TV (at the time) in places, with a moody and often-cinematic '70s flavor--- and Angie Dickinson and Earl Holliman NEVER had such a good vehicle.
4/17/06: Unfortunately, no one seems to know it's on DVD, and the mediocre sales reflect that. Plus, it hasn't been available much for a while, so the kids haven't seen it.

In Plain Sight: Season One (2008) Review

In Plain Sight: Season One (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hopefully, Mary McCormack reads her Amazon.com reviews. IN PLAIN SIGHT is the kind of intelligent comedy-drama that commercial TV should be producing, but can't or won't.
The life story of U.S. Marshal Mary Shannon who works for the U.S. Witness Protection Program (WITSEC), as told through her encounters with her colleagues and various "clients," IN PLAIN SIGHT's storylines are multidimensional and complex. So are the characters.
Mary is a tough, competent, and sharp-witted woman with ice in her professional veins. She's also nostalgic, emotional and warm, dedicated to friernds, family and the witnesses under her charge, and is committment-phobic. She drives a junkbox. She has a non-boyfriend who loves her. She may or may not love him, but she sleeps with him. She has a brilliant partner named Marshall Mann who loves her. She clearly loves him. They'd each take a bullet for the other. She doesn't sleep with him, but she's apparently jealous of his involvements with other women.
Mary has a mother (named Jinx) and a sister (named Brandi) with a combined bimbo quotient of over 250 and revolving doors on their bedrooms, who are both likeable and surprisingly innocent, and deeply wounded, and love her very much. They live with her. They don't work. She supports them. For their protection she has a cover as a low-level courier. They can't understand why she's wasting her life, and criticize her for not meeting a man as they leaf through this month's issue of Cosmo.
At work she's barbed and her emotions and moods change faster than the tides. She has a boss. He respects her. Despite titles, she's very definitely in charge. She argues vociferously with the law and order ADA who can't stand the fact that her witnesses are often career criminals with a lifetime pardon. His name is Bob Dershowitz. He's African-American. Nobody can figure that out, even Dershowitz.
Mary's private life isn't exactly a mess, but its far less clear-cut than her professional life, or would be, if she'd stop caring about her charges so much. But, as she says in so many words, she's one part secret agent, one part mother, one part confessor, one part friend, one part cop. A woman of many parts.
Mary McCormack was made for this role. "Not exactly petite" (as Mary Shannon is described), Ms. McCormack exudes a sense of self-confidence and solidity on camera, and imbues her character with layer upon layer of personality. This is a great acting job, because Mary McCormack brings Mary Shannon to life in full-color, sometimes conflicted and contradictory. She's also incredibly sexy, which doesn't seem to fit, but it does. Thank God. A competent professional, a warm caring person, and a sexual human being. Television has finally discovered a real woman.
YES!!!

Steven Seagal Lawman: The Complete Season One (2009) Review

Steven Seagal Lawman: The Complete Season One (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tonight I watched my first two episodes of Steven Seagal Lawman and I am hooked. Let me tell you what first grabbed me: Seagal is a REAL person. He has no fluff, no (apparent) plastic surgery, no entourage, and no arrogance. He's a real man, doing a tough job with a fair amount of (well-deserved) celebrity attached to his name. Watching Seagal go through the paces with his deputies is fulfilling and enjoyable, and you feel like you can connect with him.
The second fun part of the show for me is when the suspects recognize him. In one traffic stop in tonight's episode, the two suspects are drunk. The driver says to Steven as he is questioning him, "YOu remind me of Steven Seagal." Steven keeps talking, and the the driver says to his friend, "Doesn't he look just like Steven Seagal?" And then Steven says, "Yeah, I get that a lot." Then he goes back into explaining why they shouldn't drink and drive and what they need to do next. It just adds a little fun to your regular 'COPs' Type program.
And thirdly, Seagal is working in Jefferson Parrish, New Orleans so they cover a lot of ground devastated by Katrina. Seagal and his men were there during the clean-up and have first-hand knowledge to the rebuilding of the areas affected. And they care -- they really care. No fake speeches, just real caring.
Seagal has been a cop for 20 years, and only now is he making it public. He has the skills and his notoriety can be used to bring attention to this area that needs a helping hand and your prayers.
I recommend this program whole-heartedly.

Trailer Park Boys: Season 1-2 (2004)

Was told about this show by a work collegue who said he nearly wet himself with laughter watching the show. Once my wife and i started watching we were hooked!!
As soon as the fourth season had finished we came on here and bought all the dvd's as you cannot get them in England as it is only shown on sky tv channel paramount. Then paramount repeated all 4 series again and we were hooked every night. It has just finished showing again and we are having withdrawl symptoms!! Our dvd's should be here soon and the sooner the better!! The best episodes were 'mans gotta eat' where randy returns to the streets as smokey to fund his cheeseburger habit, and 'propane, propane' where Mr. Layhey looses it and tries to kill ricky. Everybody should watch trailer park boys as it is so funny but it does take a few episodes to really get into it. We are busy converting everybody we know into TPB addicts and as soon as our dvd's get here we are locking all our friends in our front room and watching all of them on our 42' wide screen tv. No one is leaving until they are hooked too!!! BUY THEM ALL!!!

A Man Apart (2003) Review

A Man Apart (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rating System:
1 star = abysmal; some books deserve to be forgotten
2 star = poor; a total waste of time
3 star = good; worth the effort
4 star = very good; what writing should be
5 star = fantastic; must own it and share it with others
STORY: DEA agent is out to take revenge on the drug dealers that killed his wife.
MY FEEDBACK:
1) Forget XXX or Fast & Furious, this is a much better Vin Diesle movie (Pitch Black is still his best though). Vin does some decent acting and his general charisma carry a large portion of the movie.
2) Good attempt at developing the relationship of Vin's character with other characters in the movie
3) Not a huge action flick but enough guns to keep this drama moving
4) Some suspension of belief is needed in this movie
5) Seemed the editing didn't explain a plot twist or two but cut things out leaving gaps in the story.
OVERALL: We enjoyed the movie and didn't feel like we wasted out time with it.

Brooklyn's Finest (2010) Review

Brooklyn's Finest (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Brooklyn's Finest" is a remarkably entertaining and well-acted police drama from director Antoine Fuqua, who also directed the also outstanding police drama, "Training Day."
The film focuses on three very different Brooklyn cops over the course of a week. Richard Gere plays Eddie, a hardened veteran just a week away from retirement. He has nightmares, he's separated from his wife, and he's just biding his time until his retirement. Ethan Hawke, the hero of "Training Day, plays a narcotics detective desperate to finance a new home to give a better life to his wife, children, and twins on the way. Don Cheadle plays Tango, an undercover cop, who is so deep undercover that he forgets who he really is, and to make matters worse, he now has to setup a high-level drug dealer who saved his life while he was undercover in prison.
These examples of Brooklyn's Finest are all living on the edge, and they all go over the edge one way or another. The acting from these three is superb. Their performances along with Wesley Snipes as the drug dealer, Brian F. O'Byrne as Hawkes' best friend and partner, Shannon Kane as Eddie's hooker with a heart of gold, and a number of others, make this a very enjoyable, but powerfully sad and tragic film.

Something of a genre homecoming, Antoine Fuqua's latest film once again finds him delving into the gritty, brutal realm of cops and crooks—as he did in Training Day. Tango is an undercover officer on a narcotics detail that forces him to choose between duty and friendship. Having been to hell and back, he wants out, but the powers that be won't let him quit. Family-man Sal is a detective tempted by greed and corruption. He can barely make ends meet, and now his wife has an illness that threatens the life of their unborn twins. Eddie is nearing retirement age and has long since lost his dedication to his job as a cop. He wakes up every morning trying to come up with a reason to go on living...and he can't think of one. Fate brings the three men to the same Brooklyn housing project as each takes the law into his own hands. Crosscutting between multiple subplots, Brooklyn's Finest unfolds violently and passionately as coiled, constantly roving cinematography contributes a measure of unease to the underworld action.
