One Piece: Season One, Third Voyage Review

One Piece: Season One, Third Voyage

Kudos to Funimation for releasing the uncut series of One Piece DVDs! Gone are the crappy voices and lollipops from the US TV release. If you want to go authentic, by all means the Japanese audio track is great. But the English dub is done really well, too. This is just anime done right.
I've already read the manga series in Shonen Jump, so I knew what to expect, but the performances in this Third Voyage DVD set are just amazing. Sanji is way cooler than I had given him credit for. And during some of the Nami backstory sequences I even cried a bit. ^_^
There are some very emotionally powerful moments in this series, and the animation, story, and voice acting dos a fantastic job drawing it out. I'm so glad that this has been right for the English speaking anime viewing audience, and eagerly look forward to the next volume.
BTW, in terms of extra features, Funimation includes the marathon mode that I believe they started with Dragonball Z. Basically, if you pick this mode it skips playing the intro, ending, previews, and last episode recaps, essentially streaming all the episodes together into one big show. It's a cool feature, but I really enjoy the intro and ending songs, so I generally watch the normal mode. Also included are textless intros and endings (so you can fully view the animation without text blocking the view).

Everybody Hates Chris - The First Season (2005) Review

Everybody Hates Chris - The First Season (2005)

This is one of the funniest shows around. I really love it. Chris Rock narrates, while actors act out the story of his childhood when he was 13 years old. It's about Chris and his family moving out of the projects and making a new start. Chris goes to school by himself to a good school in an Italian neighborhood (a real long haul) while his two siblings (younger brother Drew and younger sister Tonya go to their same school) so he has to learn to fight new battles as he tries to fit in. His first day there he faces a bully but also makes a new friend Greg (who couldn't win a fight if he tried). Back at home there is his dad Julius (played by the hilarious Terry Crews) and his take-no-nonsense mum Rochelle. His dad is really tight and tries to save money wherever he can and however he can.
All the episodes are called Everyone Hates The ... and each episode keeps getting better and better. To me, my favourite is episode 7 called Everyone Hates The Babysitter. Julius and Rochelle decide to have a date night and hire this girl to babysit the three kids. She always leaves the house to take care of her business. That in itself is funny but then Julius and Rochelle are at a restaurant that doesn't accept their coupon and the restaurant gets robbed.
It's such a great show and you will be in stitches watching it. Chris Rock narrates perfectly and you can see his life coming to life in each episode. I love it and hope you enjoy it and are as entertained by it as much as I am. I can't wait to get my copy.

The Bionic Woman: Season One Review

The Bionic Woman: Season One
Average Reviews:

Ever since the advent of digital video discs consumers and fans of classic television shows have been hoping and demanding to see "The Bionic Woman" on DVD. The series that starred Lindsay Wagner and made her into a household name was released in Europe on Region 2 dics, but the North American marketplace was virtually ignored due to ownership issues. Now, this wonderful and innovative series about a woman who possesses bionics and works undercover for the OSI while being a school teacher by day, comes to DVD on October 19, 2010. I for one am a very happy boy! I grew up watching Lindsay Wagner fight the bad guys and would watch with anxiety week after week to see what adventures the bionic woman would get herself embroiled in.
"The Bionic Woman" got her start on a two-part "Six Million Dollar Man". At the end of the second episode Jamie Sommers actually died. Overnight ABC was inundated with letters demanding Jamie live and be given her own series. Fred Silverman, president of the network and keen on seeing potential Nielsen ratings, especially those of a young demographic, caved in and Jamie Sommers was brought back to life and given her own weekly show, sometimes garnering higher ratings than that of Lee Major's series ("The Bionic Woman" finished at #5 in the 1975-1976 Nielsen Ratings).
"The Bionic Woman" was pure comic book fluff with a strong, intelligent woman as the lead, but the series would have been a bomb if not for the excellent acting chomps of Lindsay Wagner. Wagner was very likeable in her portrayal which explains why any girl watching "The Bionic Woman" during its original run wanted to be her and the boys wanted to marry her. Lindsay Wagner even won an Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1977. This was no small feat as Lindsay's competition that year was Angie Dickinson for "Police Woman", Kate Jackson ("Charlie's Angels"), Sada Thompson ("Family"), and Michael Learned for "The Waltons".
This oustanding four disc DVD box set will feature all 13 season one episodes that began airing in January, 1976 (the show was a midseason replacement) along with a slew of bonus features. The bonuses include a brand new featurette with Lindsay Wagner being interviewed called "Bionic Beginnings", audio commentary from Kenneth Johnson who created and directed the series, a gag reel (this is not to be missed as the bloopers are hilarious and Lindsay proves she has a tongue like a sailor!), and photo gallery. To make things even more appealing this set will feature two crossover episodes from "The Six Million Dollar Man" that showed how Jamie Sommers came to be. These episodes are entitled "The Bionic Woman-Part 1" (aired March 16, 1975) and "Part 2" (March 23, 1975), "The Return of The Bionic Woman-Part 1" (September 14, 1975) and "Part 2" (September 21, 1975)".
Important to note too is that it has been long thought by fans and critics of "The Bionic Woman" that the episode entitled "Welcome Home Jamie Part 1" was first aired on ABC as a "Six Million Dollar Man" episode. The truth is that is not the case. Recently in October, 2010 research consultants from Timelife who are bringing the entire "Six Million Dollar Man" series to DVD have discovered that "Welcome Home Jamie Part 1" was indeed the first ever "Bionic Woman" episode to be telecast on network television. It was long thought that particular episode was telecast as a "Six Million Dollar Man".
UPDATE: "THE BIONIC WOMAN-SEASON 2" COMES TO DVD ON MAY 17, 2011!!!
Here is a list of "The Bionic Woman-Season 1" episodes along with their airdates:
1. "Welcome Home Jamie-Part 1", January 11, 1976
2. "Welcome Home Jamie-Part 2", January 21, 1976
3. "Angel of Mercy", January 28, 1976
4. "A Thing of the Past", February 18, 1976
5. "Claws", February 25, 1976
6. "The Deadly Missiles", March 3, 1976
7. "Bionic Beauty", March 17, 1976
8. "Jamie's Mother, March 24, 1976
9. "Winning Is Everything", April 7, 1976
10. "Canyon of Death, April 14, 1976
11. "Fly Jamie", May 5, 1976
12. "The Jailing of Jamie", May 12, 1976

Transformers: The Complete First Season (25th Anniversary Edition) (1984) Review

Transformers: The Complete First Season (25th Anniversary Edition) (1984)

A lot of us grew up on the Generation One or G1 Transformer's long before a live action film about giant transforming robots could have been thought possible. Now to tie in with this summer's live action sequel, Transformer's 2: Revenge Of The Fallen, comes this 3-Disc DVD set containing all sixteen episodes of the first season of this beloved eighties classic. Those sixteen episodes, originally airing September 17th to December 29th 1984, are:
1: More Than Meets the Eye (1)
2: More Than Meets the Eye (2)
3: More Than Meets the Eye (3)
4: Transport to Oblivion
5: Roll for It
6: Divide and Conquer
7: S.O.S. Dinobots
8: The Ultimate Doom: Brainwash (1)
9: The Ultimate Doom: Search (2)
10: The Ultimate Doom: Revival (3)
11: War of the Dinobots
12: Countdown to Extinction
13: Fire in the Sky
14: Heavy Metal War
15: Fire on the Mountain
16: A Plague of Insecticons
Special Features Are So Far Said To Include:
Original Concept Artwork
Archival Hasbro Toy Commercials
Rare Public Service Announcements
"Triplechanger: From Toy To Comic To Screen: The Origins Of The Transformers" Featurette
A Printable Script For The Episode "Transport To Oblivion"
& A Limited Edition Autobot Magnet
The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it's all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are still classics to those who remember them and will be more enjoyable for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really just a half hour commercial became common knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe just because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it's niche.
Fans should be very excited to own these episodes in a new more affordable set. The set is being put out by Shout! Factory and they have always done an excellent job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This set was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I'm very glad to see the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn't buy the more expensive original sets are going to be excited at the chance to get this one and I know that I can't wait. I originally gave this set 5 stars just for the opportunity to own these classic episodes in a proper DVD set, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to original broadcast versions with a new stereo soundtrack created from the original audio I'm more excited than ever.
Some may say that this series was just the next step in a great advertising campaign for children's toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the eye. Thanks For Your Time.
*Rather than clutter up the review page I have posted a list of episode descriptions in my comments section for those who are curious.
*It now appears that Shout! will also be releasing Transformer's G1 in a complete series set this summer. While I think this first season set is still great for some I personally am more excited for the complete series.
