(More customer reviews)This is one of the funniest shows around. I really love it. Chris Rock narrates, while actors act out the story of his childhood when he was 13 years old. It's about Chris and his family moving out of the projects and making a new start. Chris goes to school by himself to a good school in an Italian neighborhood (a real long haul) while his two siblings (younger brother Drew and younger sister Tonya go to their same school) so he has to learn to fight new battles as he tries to fit in. His first day there he faces a bully but also makes a new friend Greg (who couldn't win a fight if he tried). Back at home there is his dad Julius (played by the hilarious Terry Crews) and his take-no-nonsense mum Rochelle. His dad is really tight and tries to save money wherever he can and however he can.
All the episodes are called Everyone Hates The ... and each episode keeps getting better and better. To me, my favourite is episode 7 called Everyone Hates The Babysitter. Julius and Rochelle decide to have a date night and hire this girl to babysit the three kids. She always leaves the house to take care of her business. That in itself is funny but then Julius and Rochelle are at a restaurant that doesn't accept their coupon and the restaurant gets robbed.
It's such a great show and you will be in stitches watching it. Chris Rock narrates perfectly and you can see his life coming to life in each episode. I love it and hope you enjoy it and are as entertained by it as much as I am. I can't wait to get my copy.

Louis C.K.: Chewed Up (2008) Review

I love that no topic is off limits to him, and that he says things that we always think and feel but often don't have the guts to say. This ridiculously funny show is a perfect-follow up to his great "Shameless" special. If you're looking for big laughs while thinking "I can't believe he just said that--but it's so true" then look no further than Louis C.K.

Pootie Tang (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)Don't let the title lead you astray! This is NOT one of those gross-out sex movies that are all the rage at the metroplex. In fact, the title is the only offensive thing about the whole picture!
I went into this movie thinking it was going to be one of those "so bad it's good" movies. So you can imagine my surprise when I started laughing and couldn't stop until the final scene of the movie. It's nonsense. It's a joyful, daffy comedy. I mean, can you resist a movie with lines like, "Nobody could ever understand what Pootie was saying, but man, he sure was cool"? The characters and situations are over the top, but the actors are 100% committed to line after ridiculous line that it SOARS. It's one of those comedies that makes you think, "Why don't they make em like this anymore?"
The REAL star of this show, however, is Wanda Sykes who plays Pootie's gal Biggie Shorty, who "dresses up all nice and dances on the street next to a buncha ho's" (but that doesn't mean she's hookin'). She walks away with the whole picture. Chris Rock gives her some tough competition as a radio DJ and as Pootie's father, as does Jennifer Coolidge who plays the super-ho Ireenie, but in the end, Biggie Shorty is the star.
I'm speechless. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. And this coming from a guy whose favorite movies are CITIZEN KANE and CASABLANCA.

(More customer reviews)I have to admit I was underwhelmed by the ads for "Madagascar", it just didn't look that good. But my kids were anxious to see it so I dragged myself into the theater on Saturday ready to see another kiddie movie along the lines of "Shark Tale" or "Home on the Range". I did not expect to enjoy the movie as much as my seven year old....if not more. "Madagascar" is not only a great animated film and packs as many laughs into it's hour and half as either "Shrek" movie did, "Madagascar" is just a great comedy. There were several times in the movie that were just laugh out loud funny, the scene with the Penguins in Antarctica was worth the price of admission for me! There are plenty of jokes aimed at an older audience, like the reference to "The Twilight Zone" episode "How to Serve Man". The story is great and the characters are really fun. The visuals are stunning and the animation is top-notch. Add all that together with a great soundtrack, and I think "Madagascar" is a great way to kick off the summer movie season. This one ranks right up there with "The Incredibles" and "Shrek".

Good Hair (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Comedian Chris Rock takes a look at the lengths some people in the African-American community, especially women, go to for "good hair". Near the beginning and end of the movie Rock visits the Bronner Hair Show in Atlanta, Georgia, a huge trade convention for the manufacturers of black hair products. Here he highlights four stylists competing for the title of champion platform performer, an elaborate stage show featuring music, dance, costumes and, of course, hairstyling. In between Rock discusses all the time and money spent using relaxer and getting weaves as well as the possible psychological and cultural reasons behind this obsession with hair.
Rock's take on the subject seems to be that it is more important what's in your head than on your head. But it also recognizes the pressures placed on black women to fit in with society's beauty standards and understands why these women forsake their natural hair for perms and extensions. The film delves into serious subjects but maintains a funny and playful tone throughout. I certainly found myself laughing more than I did at the usual Hollywood comedy. And I even left the theater feeling a little smarter about a topic I knew almost nothing about. One of the better documentaries of the year.

Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)Chris Rock is not just a comedian. He doesn't just tell jokes (anymore). He's a truly smart guy that sees the world for what it is...and then shares his view of it with you. And the world is clearly a very very funny place.
Political views. Racial views. Religious views. Social views. His views on plain old common sense....Whether you agree with his views or not, he'll make you laugh. He might even make you mad with some of his views...but that's the point. Oh, you mean the stuff you agree with is funny, but the stuff that you don't agree with isn't??? C'mon!
Rock's 2008 HBO special Kill the Messenger is Chris Rock at his best. Some of the act does seem familiar just because (most of us?) now know his routine so well after so many fine years. You have his previous HBO specials: from "Big *** Jokes" 14 years ago when he used to simply "tell jokes", to his breakthrough specials starting in 1996 that established Rock for the unique style and delivery that he is now famous for {Bring The Pain (1996), Bigger and Blacker (1999), and Never Scared (2004)}. And of course you also have years and years of TV and movies to go with his signature HBO persona.
So, while some of the act may seem a bit familiar, rest assured that the subject matter is fresh. The only annoyance (albeit a slight annoyance) with the Kill the Messenger performance is the 3-venue video splicing presentation. In other words, you'll see Rock start a joke in New York, but then finish it in London or South Africa (not necessarily in that order); this splicing effect was distracting for me, but may not bother you.
So do go ahead and hit the buy button for a night of laughs if you didn't have the good fortune to catch this on HBO. One other word of caution is that the material is very timely. When the DVD is finally released in early 2009, some of it will actually be dated...mostly the pre-election stuff.

Death at a Funeral (2010) Review

(More customer reviews)WHY? A gag filled story filled with humor in a situation that's not supposed to be funny. You have to like this type of off-the-wall comedy drama. It is quirky humor. You have to decide if you like this US version or stick with the UK original of 3 years earlier. Both have great, top stars, doing awesomely in the roles of unusual characters through a bazaar affair.
Chris York is the deceased man's son in America. Well done. Or do you prefer a British Matthew MacFadyen taking a giant leap from Mr. Darcy in "Pride & Prejudice" for his work as the same character in the British film? Both top actors, both convincing, and creating laughs, although playing a solemn role. Directors have both done well with the same script. Even the blackmail amount of 15,000 pounds was accurately converted to 30,000 US dollars. Neil LeBute (US film) gets the most out of an American cast, Frank OZ (actually British born) puts together his cast and the story, which is as imaginary as OZ-the-Wizard's tale. Both the US & UK versions come with a munchkin-size star, Peter Dinklage (Frank in US; Peter in UK) who is fantastic in a difficult role, made only more difficult and strange in the US version due to skin tone significance. Dinklage is the only cast member to do the same role in both films.
The question is "Why?" first and then "Which?" for the viewers. Which may be best decided by buying both and making your own comparison. If you are one of the public that likes viewing the same movie multiple times, this story will give you some diversification in repetition, WITHOUT LOSS OF QUALITY.
You'll laugh till the film's end, when the bereaved son, after a day of mishaps, delivers a touching, philosophical ending that seems alien to all that happened beginning with the delivery of the wrong body to the family home on the morning of this "Death at a Funeral."
So do you want American scenery or British? American accents or British? English subtitles or ENGLISH??? This remake of a British hit for the American public reminds me somewhat of a British TV series "Life on Mars: UK Series" that was redone for American TV. Why? But both versions have their fans. There I preferred the UK.
Bottom line. If your not looking for depth in a movie, just weird stuff, this will fill your basket, US or UK. It's like picking your favorite chocolate variety--it all tastes like chocolate, and it's good.
