Dirty Sexy Money: The Complete and Final Second Season Review

Dirty Sexy Money: The Complete and Final Second Season

(More customer reviews)
The ABC drama series "Dirty Sex Money" created by Craig Wright ("Brothers and Sisters", "Lost" and "Six Feet Under") definitely made its impression when it took out an ad back in 2007 using Paris Hilton's jail sentence to promote its show. The series which was originally given 22-episodes for its first season and ran into bad luck (as with other shows) due to the WGA writer's strike. The first season only received 10 episodes and by the time the second season came back on air, it was ten months since the season finale.
Needless to say, the writer's strike definitely made "Dirty Sexy Money" a TV series casualty and unfortunately, the series was unable to get back on its feet. The remaining final episodes came back on by July 2009 but needless to say, with so many delays and its unpredictable schedule, many people were lost and eventually missed out on episodes. But fans who committed to the series will fortunately get a chance to see "Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season" released on DVD and give people a chance to catch up on the final season.
The main premise of "Dirty Sexy Money" revolves around a successful lawyer named Nick George (Peter Krause). VIDEO & AUDIO:
"Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season" is featured in widescreen with an aspect ratio of 1:78:1, enhanced for 16×9 television. For the most part, the picture quality of "Dirty Sexy Money" is good as expect from a drama series on DVD. But one of the positives of the series is that there is quite a bit of outdoor shots and definitely utilizes an elaborate set design to create the luxurious world of the Darlings.
As for the audio, the series is featured in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The series is primarily a dialogue driven series with front and center channels being the main source of audio distribution. Dialogue is clear and understandable. But for the most part, the audio is satisfactory for this drama series, this is not a series that doesn't feature any major scenes that involve surround sound usage.
Subtitles are presented in English SDH, French and Spanish.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season" includes the following special features:

* Deleted Scenes - Seven deleted scenes which include: A Darling Cover-up?, Letitia Romances Tripp, Unwanted Guest, Patrick's Politics, Stinking Up the Place, Brian's Complicated Life and Done!. The final deleted scene actually gives some insight of how the series could have ended.
JUDGMENT CALL:
"Dirty Sexy Money" was a series that I really enjoyed when it first aired on television. The first season showed promise but it was such a shame that the WGA Writer's Strike really put a damper on the series. Not only was the series cut short but its schedule was too erratic.
By the time it came back on television for season 2, it was already ten months later. Too much time had passed since the finale and to make things worse, when the second season did air, again the season was out of whack as the final five episodes took several months to air after it was reported that the series was canceled. Needless to say, the series did not have much of a chance to get back on its feet.
After watching "Dirty Sexy Money - The Complete and Final Second Season", not only did I enjoy it, it was bittersweet because the series ends with a major bombshell and you know there are no future episodes to continue the storyline.
Overall, I feel that fans of the series can find some closure with this final DVD set and find some satisfaction from the final 13 episodes. As mentioned, the final episode was quite intriguing and again, it's a shame that the series will not be continued.
As for the characters, I found them all quite intriguing and you eventually become drawn to that character's storyline. I was also drawn by the drama and the multiple infighting between the characters, and it's quite interesting because one can find similarities with this drama series to 80's drama series such as "Dallas" and "Dynasty" which involve corporate greed, families that were born with luxury and of course, those few characters on the outside who seem to despise that lifestyle.
I felt that the trimming of the first season down to 10 episodes possibly took away from much needed character development and for the second season, although I enjoyed the series, I did have some problems with seeing the disintegration of Nick and Lisa's marriage but also seeing this somewhat unlikely storyline involving Simon Elder and Nola Lyon. It was a bit farfetched and in someways, I just felt that the character of Simon seemed a bit too young to be the rival of Tripp Darling and therefore, for me, it hindered the storyline as these two rich corporate behemoths would go against each other. It just didn't seem right.
I did enjoy the part of Karen Darling because her character could have been handled as the typical socialite (ie. which fits...Read more›

Dirty Sexy Money: Season One Review

Dirty Sexy Money: Season One
Average Reviews:

This is a surprising show. Based on the title and subject matter, it may seem like a superficial love letter to the culture of the rich, the shallow and people famous for being famous, but it is so much more. I haven't seen the 1st season DVD yet, so this review is based on the 1st season episodes aired on ABC. Hopefully there will be DVD extras that add to the enjoyment of this set, though details haven't been provided yet.
In Dirty Sexy Money, the writers explore the meaning of extraordinary wealth and power, how those things can support an individual and give freedom, but also how they can distract people from their own true selves, their purpose and from what is really important. What does it mean to grow up in an environment with limitless resources? To live in an environment where anything, or anyone, you want can be bought? How does an individual in that environment find purpose or meaning in his/her life and relate to others? Is it a given that people in that situation will be corrupt or shallow? Or do we, as the public, just expect them to be, and so they seem to live up (and down) to our expectations? And what if you or I had the opportunity to join them, would we? And at what cost?
Those are the kinds of questions Dirty Sexy Money asks. Along the way there is a fun, rollicking soap opera-ish ride, with scheming characters, luxurious sets, beautiful people, gorgeous New York City scenery (in the pilot anyway) and amazing, amazing acting.
Sure, in this first season, there are uneven moments as the show finds its tone and its footing, but the characters and the situations will draw you in and entertain you nonetheless.
If you want, come for the flash, the beautiful people/clothes and the humor (there will be plenty), but stay for the writing and the performances (pretty much everyone in the cast delivers, and there are moments with Donald Sutherland, Peter Krause, Jill Clayburgh, Glenn Fitzgerald, Seth Gabel and others that are breathtaking) , and the commentary the series makes about how morality, balance, and humanity might even survive in our world, a world which often seems to only value superficial beauty, power and wealth.

The absurdly wealthy Darlings of New York have asked him to take over his father s job as their personal lawyer, but the money that will allow him the freedom to be an altruistic do-gooder is only part of the picture. JFK - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition) (1991) Review

JFK - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition) (1991)
Average Reviews:

Oliver Stone's "JFK" is a monstrous epic that revolves around the whole mystery around President Kennedy's assassination. While it is a dramatic picture and Stone most likely twisted a few things to make this a more relevant and better movie, it is still an undeniable powerhouse that has you go through a whole set of emotions, ranging from fear, anger, paranoia and sadness. There's no question that the majority of the country believes that there is more to the assassination than we were lead to believe. I don't think it's exactly how it is in the movie, but that's not important. What is important is that the film works for many reasons.
President Kennedy has been assassinated. Lee Harvey Oswald is the suspect and gets shot shortly after. There is a secretive and brief hearing on the whole assassination, and it is in stone that Oswald was a lone gunman and nobody else was involved. Seems like an open-and-shut-case, but District Attorney Jim Garrison isn't willing to buy it. With his staff, they decide to work on the case, until they are shut down by the government. Three years later, Garrison isn't willing to stand by in silence anymore and decides to go ahead with the case. The further he digs, the more horrible truths he uncovers. Not only that, but people high up in the ranks are willing to do anything to make sure that the American Public will never find out about them.
As I said, this isn't meant to be an entirely accurate portrayal of how everything happened. It suggests to you that it could've been this way, and it even does a good job of presenting its case to you. What I think Stone was trying to achieve was to create his own commentary on how people feel about the handling of the whole assassination and how sloppily the case was handled. The film wasn't made to merely exploit the death of Kennedy, but what it does exploit is the fact that we're willing to believe anything they tell us in the media. It's a hard concept to grasp, because it's not too far from the truth. The movie is brilliantly directed and well-acted. Kevin Costner gives one of the best performances of his career. The film has a whole list of famous actors in it, like Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Tommy Lee Jones, Joe Pesci, Sissy Spacek and a whole bunch more. They are all fantastic in their roles.
A word of warning; this is a VERY LONG movie. It is about 3 and a half hours long in running time. If you want to watch this, then you have to really commit to it. If you're not in the mood for a very lengthy movie, then you will not be able to enjoy this. The new 2-Disc Special Edition offers a remastered director's cut that looks and sounds great. Another interesting feature is the documentary, "Beyond JFK: The Question of Conspiracy." Extras included are deleted/extended scenes, commentary from the director, theatrical trailer, essays and DVD-ROM features. A very nice package that does the film justice.
JFK" is an amazing picture that did not bore me for a single second. Not only does it work as a powerful drama, but it also works as an intense thriller. Did everything happen the way the movie proposes? Maybe, maybe not. What the film does is make you think about everything that happened around the assassination. Any film that can get the brain thinking is more than okay in my book. A very character-driven and passionate epic that is perfectly executed by Oliver Stone.

Fallen (Snap Case) (1998) Review

Fallen (Snap Case) (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fallen is underrated, as I felt it wasn't nowhere near as bad as some critics said it to be. It's a very interesting mix of The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs and Seven. The result is one of the best thrillers of the decade. It's not quite up there with Lambs or Seven but it's as good as Arlington Road and is significantly superior to The Bone Collector and Kiss the Girls.
The plot is about Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington), who has just captured serial killer Edgar Reese (Elias Koteas). Before Reese is executed, he speaks to Hobbes in a strange language and tells him a riddle, asking him why there's a space between Lyons and Spakowsky. Hobbes doesn't think much of this and watches silently as Reese is executed in the gas chamber.
The next day, another murder occurs, and Hobbes and his partner Jonesy (John Goodman) check it out. To his shock, Hobbes finds the same riddle Reese told him scrawled on the wall of the victim's apartment. Unraveling the clue and with the help of an intelligent woman named Gretta Milano (Embeth Davidtz), he discovers that a demon called Azazel had inhibited the body of Reese and can switch from one human host another with a simple touch.
The premise itself is chilling, yet I was a bit hesitant to watch this film. The critics' reviews were mixed but all of them seemed to agree that the film was a bit slow moving. The truth is, Fallen is a bit slow for the first forty or so minutes, but the last eighty minutes are full of intriguing ideas that are well explored along with plenty of extremely suspenseful scenes, especially the ending, which, by the way, has a great twist.
Regarding the suspenseful moments of the film, they can truly be described as edge of your seat. One of the most harrowing sequences in this film is an original chase scene that involves the domino effect, where the demon chases after Davidtz by passing from one human host to another. There's also the chilling scenes where Washington has to try and keep up with who Azazel has just possessed.
Fallen's greatest aspect, despite all those truly thrilling and very suspenseful scenes, is its ending. It first involves a very clever plan being unfolded by one of the characters and ends with a great and unpredictable plot twist. This is truly one of the most unpredictable endings I have seen. It might not have as much of the shock power as the edgy (and twisty) climaxes of Seven and Arlington Road (or for that matter, The Sixth Sense), but it's just as surprising if not more.
The performances in this film are solid. Denzel Washington is fine as the detective who is much more clever than Azazel thinks. John Goodman is his usual solid self as Hobbes' partner, and he excels in this role, proving he has a lot of range ever since his show Roseanne was cancelled. Embeth Davidtz's performance is okay though her character is slightly underwritten. The real scene stealer, though, is Elias Koteas. Though he's in the film for five minutes his Edgar Reese character is scary and actually a bit fun to watch. Most of the characters are well-developed and this helps us care for Hobbes and his family.
The script by Nicholas Kazan is well-written and the twist in the end makes it better to appreciate and Gregory Hoblit's use of a dark, edgy atmosphere and mood is undeniably effective.

The Eagle Has Landed (1976) Review

The Eagle Has Landed (1976)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At long last, one of my favourite "fictional" World War II films is finally out on DVD and the transfer is excellent all round. And even better, there is now a "Special Edition" Region 2 release available on the Amazon UK website with an additional 17 minutes of footage, interviews with Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland & Donald Pleasance, theatrical trailers, biographies on cast & crew plus interviews from British news programs !
The 1970's was a decade when war movies were filled with mercenaries, commando's and full guns blazing action....and "The Eagle has Landed" is no exception, but a better told tale than many others !
Director John Sturges ( "The Great Escape", "The Magnificent Seven", "Ice Station Zebra" ) in his final directorial role shows once again why he was one sharpest action / suspense film directors of the 1960/70's with this exciting filming of the best selling Jack Higgins novel. What makes this film so enjoyable, and able to withstand repeated viewings is the talented cast at the centre of this twisting tale of spies and espionage. German officer Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine) is the disgraced leader of a group of crack German paratroopers that have been exiled to operate an MTB boat in the English Channel. Opportuntity comes their way in the form of Colonel Radl (Robert Duvall), with an incredible plot to secretly parachute into England and kidnap Winston Churchill from a country retreat. Donald Pleasance turns in a chilling performance as SS leader, Heinrich Himmler...Donald Sutherland in fine form as the IRA ally, Liam Devlin...Larry Hagman is the pompous and foolhardy Colonel Pitts and Treat Willians (in his first movie role) as the wiser and more wary American Ranger, Captain Clark. Attractive Jenny Agutter contributes the love interest as Molly Prior, and icy Jean Marsh puts in a cold blooded display as the Nazi sympathasier, Joanna Grey.
"The Eagle has Landed" has some great twists and turns and never lets the viewer relax as the story holds a keen balance between action, suspense, romance and tragedy. Highly recommended for those who like intrigue and adventure in their WWII movies !!
A highly entertaining and different WWII film that stands out from the rest.
