The O.C.: The Complete Third Season (2003) Review

The O.C.: The Complete Third Season (2003)

December 1, 2006 Addition: I wanted to add a note responding to my own question in my original headline: Can it rebound in Season Four? The great news is: Yes! If there were an Emmy given for "The Comeback Show of the Year," THE O.C. after its first five episodes would have to be a leading candidate. I will be honest: I initially tuned in just to verify that THE O.C. in its 4th season was as bad as it was in its 3rd. I was going to watch two or three episodes and then give up on it. The great news is that it has completely returned to form and is now as good as it has been since it first started. This was not expected! The main reason is has been so good has been that it has gotten back to enjoying the characters, instead of introducing a string of unlikable ones that no one can stand. So far this season, not a single irritating new character! I was afraid that they would make Caitlin into the new Marissa, but so far she hasn't been too bad. The biggest surprise has to be Taylor. I assumed that she would no longer be a part of the show this season, but they not only have brought her back, they've made her vastly more intersting and sympathetic than I would ever have imagined. She is actually now a character I like. Who'd a thunk it? Right now the show is as strong as it was in Season One. One of the best turnarounds I've ever seen a show make.
The third season of THE OC was an almost unbelievable come down from the first two fun seasons. The things that made people enjoy the show the first two seasons were largely pushed to the side, while the more irritating features of the first two seasons were brought to the fore and made the center of the show. On several occasions both I and my good friend who also watches the show debated about whether we were going to stop watching it. There is a point where the displeasure is watching the show threatened to overwhelm any pleasures it brought. Then, after a season of one unpleasantness after another, the show ended on a shocker. Normally one would require a Spoiler warning for this, but unfortunately Mischa Barton herself spoiled the ending by announcing on national TV a few days before the season finale that her character was going to die on the show. Why she did this has been debated. Was she trying to hurt the show? Was she just being stupid? Whatever the reason, what would have been one of the most shocking endings in recent TV history was common knowledge even before it aired.
What went wrong in Season Three? Well, the same things that went wrong in Seasons 1 and 2 but that played a smaller role each year: the introduction of exceedingly unpleasant and irritating characters who dominate the course of the show's narrative. In Season One this was mainly restricted to Oliver, one of the worst characters I've ever seen in a TV show. My guess is that the show's creative team misinterpreted what made the show popular in Season One. Instead of the fun alchemy between the younger members of the cast along with the narratives centering on the adult cast members--which I think was about 99% of the reason people liked the show--they imagined that the chaos injected into the show by Oliver's character was what people loved about it. My own belief is that people liked the show DESPITE Oliver and the chaos he created, not because of him. I'm sure the show's producers imagined that Oliver was a character that viewers loved to hate, instead of merely hating him, which was the actual case. So, in Season Two, the show's producers and writers gave even more characters that we merely hated (instead of loved to hate), the unlikable Alex (who was unlikable not because she became Marissa's lover but because she was merely unlikable) and Trey, Ryan's older brother.
Because the producer's misunderstood what people were liking about the show--people liked the main characters, not the situations generated by the minor, intensely unlikable characters who upset the show's chemistry--they flooded the third season with terrible characters. It started early on in the rehab facility, where we were introduced to the duplicitous Charlotte, a role on which they wasted the wonderful Jeri Ryan. Luckily, Charlotte didn't stay on the show very long, though she was extremely unpleasant while she did. Also early in the season was the terrible Dean Jack Hess, another thoroughly unlikable and wildly implausible character who seemed to have a personal vendetta against Ryan and Marissa. He too disappeared fairly early on. But by then we had been introduced to Johnny, a semi-professional surfer at the public school Marissa was forced to attend after she was kicked out of her private school (her dismissal being merely one more of a host of unbelievable developments). Now, in Johnny's defense, he was not for the most part a terrible character. But his crush on Marissa and Marissa's ongoing inability to do the commonsense things to protect her relationship with Ryan was part and parcel of the stupidity on the part of all the major characters that almost caused the show to unravel. But even with all these irritating characters, the show's producers weren't done. Taylor Townshend was not really a character but a cartoon of a character, someone determined to take over as the school's social leader with the departure of Marissa and as Seth's girlfriend. Now, I will concede that she did become less unlikable as the season went on, and I liked that the show tried to turn her from a bad to a good character. But throughout she remained intensely annoying. There were numerous other unpleasant characters, but the crown for the title of King of the annoying characters of the third season clearly belongs to Vollchek, Johnny's surfing competitor, petty thug, briefly Marissa's lover, and all around annoying guy. He is also the guy who causes Marissa's death. While he doesn't come up to the annoying level of Oliver, he is close.
As a result of this endless parade of unlikable characters and stupid behavior on the part of the main characters (except Summer, who seems to be the only character immune to occasional idiocy--her aside, there were numerous occasions when you wanted to smack all of the major characters aside the head and yell, "Will you get a grip!"), fan discontent grew and grew and ratings of the show fell precipitously. After the end of the season there were rumors that FOX was so displeased with the show that they considered canceling it. In the end, they agreed to bring it back for 16 episodes, starting it much later in the season's schedule and running it without repeats, with the possibility of adding additional episodes if the ratings recover and if it turns out that people watch the show with Marissa off the show. It may well turn out, however, that the terrible Season Three was the beginning of the end for THE OC.
My central complaint with the show--even more than the parade of awful guest characters--is that the show more and more abandoned what made the show fun in the first two seasons: the interplay between the central characters. I hated Oliver and Trey and Alex and Vollchek and Johnny et al. but loved Sandy standing up for his principles, the wonderful interplay between Summer and Seth, Ryan and Marissa's mutual attraction despite their backgrounds. Everything else I put up with so I could enjoy that part of the show. But more and more this all retreated to the background. To be honest, pretty much the only reason I continued watching the show throughout Season Three was to enjoy the improbable relationship between Summer and Seth. As unhappy as I was with Season 3, I will probably at least start off watching the show in Season 4 just to see how they are doing. But my interest in the show is at this point on life support.
No question that the single biggest development in the entire run of the show was the death of Marissa. As much as some fans want her to come back, she is definitely dead and definitely won't be back. Mischa Barton's departure from the show seems to be a mutual decision. As the show's highest profile character (she has appeared on numerous magazine covers the past three years), she has undoubtedly been contemplating leaving TV for the movies for some time, a move accelerated by her well-publicized financial obligations owing to a break up. Even if she and the producers wanted her back, she is already tied to several movies projects and unable to do so. There are many fans who watched the show just to see if Ryan and Marissa would get back together. For them her departure could be fatal to their interest in the show. But the fact is that almost all of the horrible characters I noted earlier were connected to the show via Marissa. Almost all of the worst things in the show were narratively tied to Marissa. So, there is a real chance that the show could develop in different and better directions. But I am fearful that the writers and producers will continue in the direction the show has gone, bringing in one awful character after another, having the main characters engage in self-defeating or self-destructive behavior. When I first started watching the show, it was largely because of elements it shared with a show like THE GILMORE GIRL (on which Adam Brody was a character). I was hoping for a comedy with dramatic subplots, but instead the show has descended more and more into melodrama with less and less comedy. But I'm hoping that in Season 4 they can shift the focus more onto Summer and Seth and thereby emphasize the comedic elements that made the show so much fun in the first two seasons. But, I'm prepared to be disappointed.

All of these posts have NOTHING to do with this DVD, The product on this page is the ULTIMATE 100 GREATEST FIGHTS... Not UFC 100 which all of you are ranting and raving about... UFC 100 would never sell for $90... you are all tools.... this is a recap of the top 100 fights in the UFC, Fans voted for their favorite fights of all time, they had a series on Spike that lasted about 5 episodes briefly covering all 100 bouts, this DVD *probably* has the entire length of the 100 fights on it, instead of just the Highlights like the show. Ha, even the front of this DVD has Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva on it, which was one of the most exciting fights of all time at UFC 79:Nemesis... Far from UFC 100, Next time you write a review and start telling everyone how great it is, make sure your writing a review on the correct product, in this case, the correct DVD. I do not own this DVD, and Im not saying what this DVD is or is not, but it is obviously not what the other posts are referring to. So Buyers beware, this product is not even for sale until November 2009, and the people below that are "Reviewing" this product, are sadly mistaken.

One Tree Hill - The Complete Third Season (2006) Review

One Tree Hill - The Complete Third Season (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my junior year of high school ONE TREE HILL premiered after the cancellation of DAWSON'S CREEK and ever since the very first episode I tuned into the series trying to fill the void that DAWSON left. Yet despite the fact that every Thursday morning in Spanish class me and my fellow classmates would spend more time discussing the latest episodes than the verbs we where suppose to be congegating, the series was never really appointment television for me. Although towards the middle of the first season the writers changed part of their staff and the WB put more umpth behind the show and slowly the quality kept building until it reached its penicale in the third season - when ONE TREE HILL became my favorite television on the air (and this being said by a male college sophomore).
Starting in this, the third year, we find the characters very much established as well as their relationships to one another, their histories, and the place in the series as a whole. So right from the beginning of the season everything starts to click together, and once the action starts going and the momentium starts building (around episode four) the season doesn't take a breath.. even in the final moments of the season (literally).
After spending two season's depicted the gang's junior year of High School, Season Three starts out at the beginning of senior year for the gang and everyone is in a different place, trying to live their own lives: Peyton is dealing with loosing Jake, yet again, and to add to her problems her birth mother has come to town with a heartbreaking secret. Brooke returns to tree hill after moving to Los Angeles with her parents, still heartbroken over Lucas, but looking to move on and enjoy her senior year. Nathan and Hailey arn't speaking much, and are living in different homes basically just trying to get through the day without having to deal with one another. Lucas is trying to wrap his head around what happend with Dan in the dealership, and his newly discovered heart problem.
That just adds a summary to the very first couple of episodes and latter on in the season everything is turned upside-down by the untimely death of a major cast member in the mists of a local school shooting (a repercussion from last season's time-capsols), and from their everything starts to escalade into chaos leading up to the can't-take-a-breath seaosn finale (that came really close to being the series finale).
While season three doesn't deal with any of the major things about being a senior (prom, senior trip, college applicatons/exceptances, graduation, and moving on - that is all to be the focus of season four, currently airing on the CW), it is still the strongest season to date and a reason to stay tune for season four!
Season Three Episodes include:

The O.C.: The Complete Second Season (2003) Review

The O.C.: The Complete Second Season (2003)
Average Reviews:

The O.C. Season 2 is just as good as the first season. I like the fact that the show is not just about kids in high school, but also their parents and family and how they all interact. The cast is really good and believable enough to either make you love them or hate them. The show is very emotional at times and it is very addicting. I think what scared me away before I ever saw an episode was that I figured The O.C. was just another show about rich kids in California like Beverly Hills 90210 and/or Melrose place. The show is so much more than those other shows and has just the right amount of drama mixed in with just the right amount of heart. I highly recommend The O.C. for anyone who likes must see TV. This Complete Second season of The O.C. will be released on August 23rd, 2005 just in time for the premiere of season 3 in the Fall. This 7-DVD set will contain all 24 episodes from the second season, and a disc full of bonus material, too. The great news is that unlike season 1 season 2 will be in Widescreen. There will be an English Dolby Surround audio track, along with English, French and Spanish subtitles.
Here's a list of the bonus material you'll find on this:
The Wet and Wilde Kisses - outtakes from the "Rainy Day Women" episode
Beachy Couture: How O.C. Fashion Is Made
The O.C.: Obsessed Completely Retrospective TV Special
Gag and Goofs from Seasons 1 and 2
Extended cut of "The Rainy Day Women"

Beyoncé - B'Day Anthology Video Album (2007) Review

Beyoncé - B'Day Anthology Video Album (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As many of you readers already know, B'Day is my favorite album. I love it dearly. So when news came of a deluxe edition and a DVD with a video for each song, I was ecstatic. On the release date, I went straight to the store, bright and early, and bought both. So early, in fact, that they weren't on display yet. I had to get one of the less-than-thrilled workers to get them out of the shipping boxes for me. But hey, if you have a store that's open 24 hours a day, I don't think it's too much to ask to have new releases out by noon. (This DVD was exclusively available at Wal-Mart stores from April 3 to today. It is now available at all stores).
Anyways, the hassle was worth it. I went straight home and watched this "anthology video album" straight through. The tracklisting for it is as follows:
01.Beautiful Liar (feat. Shakira)
02.Irreplaceable
03.Kitty Kat
04.Green Light
05.Upgrade U (feat. Jay-Z)
06.Flaws and All
07.Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix)
08.Freakum Dress
09.Suga Mama
10.Deja Vu (feat. Jay-Z)
11.Ring the Alarm
12.Listen
In "Beautiful Liar," we find Shakira and Beyoncé playing a look-alike contest and belly dancing together. In "Irreplaceable," Bey kisses off her replaceable man. For the "Kitty Kat" video, we find her in leopard print and matching make-up while riding on top of a huge black cat; they also play with a large ball of yarn, which alsmot smooshes Bey in the end. Beyoncé takes on an overwhelming amount of identities in "Green Light." She even smashes a guitar! "Upgrade U" shows her swimming with an alligator, dancing, imitating Jay-Z and showing off her lavish cars, clothes and golden rings. (No need to worry, though. Jay does make an appearance). In the minimalist, yet entertaining video for "Flaws and All," the singer makes funny faces, giggles, and fools around. In "Get Me Bodied," we join Beyoncé, sister, Solange; and Destiny's Child members, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams; in a seven-minute dance fest! It is definitely the best video of the set. Beyoncé and a few of her lady friends show the definition of a "Freakum Dress" as they dance and prance around in fluorescent, skimpy attire. The "Suga Mama" video shows the star dancing around a pole, riding a mechanical bull and sitting on top of a giant, luminous sugar cube. "Deja Vu" is an energetic, couture mini-fashion show. In "Ring the Alarm," we see Beyoncé get quite angry and emotional. `Nuff said. She delivers a powerful performance of the ballad, "Listen."
Also included on this DVD as an extra is a fifteen minute behind-the-scenes featurette. It shows how the project came to fruition and all the work that went into it. It was very fascinating, especially as a fan, but I just wish it were longer. There's also an "ultimate performer" feauture and a free poster of Beyonce.
Wow! What an amazing accomplishment Bey has pulled off! I have even more respect for her after seeing this. (By the way, the videos are much better than how they sound on paper). That's not to say this set is without flaws. Some of the videos look just a little bit cheap. If a few more dollars were splurged, they could've been much better. I also would've liked to have the "Kitty Kat" video to be longer than a minute. Parts of the videos seem a little cheesy at times, also. The sound on "Get Me Bodied" is a little distorted and part of the final chorus is cut off on "Freakum Dress." Also, the claim that there is a video for each song is false. (A "Resentment" video is not present).
But hey... these are very small faults. It is amazing that she pulled this off, especially in the time she did. Overall, it is a very enjoyable DVD with entertaining and fun videos. I recommend this to anyone, but especially to lovers of Beyoncé and her B'Day album. This video album takes the songs to another whole level and makes me love them even more.

One Tree Hill: The Complete Second Season (2003) Review

One Tree Hill: The Complete Second Season (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The second season of One Tree Hill was fantastic. Although not up to par with the first season quality wise, the second season is still ten times better than the other shows on television today. The season starts off a tad bit on the slow side, but no need to worry, because things get heated up real fast.
Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) announced in the season one finale that they got married, so now, the second season has them starting to deal with their marriage. Things don't exactly go as smoothly as they had planned. There are temptations along the line, as well as their dreams for the future which start to bring them apart from one another. Haley starts a musical career with Chris Keller (Tyler Hilton), a new guy in Tree Hill, and eventually, she leaves Tree Hill and Nathan to go on a concert tour across the US, leaving Nathan devistated.
The love triangle drama from last season between Lucas (Chad Michael Murray), Peyton (Hilarie Burton), and Brooke (Sophia Bush) has been solved, and all three are friends with one another. Brooke finds herself attracted to her new neighbor, Felix (Michael Copon), as the two eventually hook up. Felix's younger sister, Anna (Daniella Alonso) finds herself attracted to Lucas, but she has some secrets of her own to hide. Felix brings much of the drama to Tree Hill between the teens in the second season, by intimidating most people, and of course, the classic 'Dare Night' he arranges.
Peyton finds herself lonely, because last season, she felt herself romantically attracted to Jake (Bryan Greenberg), but problems with custody of his 6 month old daughter, Jenny, caused him to leave Tree Hill. Peyton finds herself in a dark place, but Jake returns with Jenny, as Jake and Peyton become romantically involved, only for Jake's ex, Nikki (Emanuelle Vaugier) to return, wanting Jenny for herself. Eventually, Jake is arrested for not giving custody, as Nikki kidnaps Jenny, leaving Tree Hill.
The adults of Tree Hill also deal with drama themselves this season. After Dan (Paul Johanssen) found his wife Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods) and his older brother Keith (Craig Scheffer) sleeping together, he was about to sign the divorce papers when he has a heart attack. He recovers, but Deb still remains with Dan, feeling sorry for him. To get back at Keith for sleeping with Deb, Dan hires Jules (Mia Menopolous) to make Keith fall in love with her, and then break his heart, just as Dan's had been when Keith slept with Deb. All happens, except Jules falls in love with Keith, as the revelations are brought forth, leaving both Keith and Jules heartbroken, and alone.
Karen (Moira Kelly) has gone back to college, enrolled in a business class, but finds herself falling in love with her professor, Andy. The two secretly date, but eventually Dan reveals their relationship to the class, leaving Karen extremely angry.
Deb has become addicted to painkillers this season, and is starting to spiral out of control with her life. Eventually she goes to rehab, and plans on leaving Tree Hill with Nathan.
But by the time the finale has come around, most of the characters have become infuriated with Dan for one reason or another, leading up to the explosive last five minutes, resulting in an attempted murder of Dan. Does he live? Or die? It's unknown at this point, or who even tried to kill him.
The second season of One Tree Hill is a must have for any fans, because the second season started to explore more into the characters, their relationships with one another, as well as their hopes and dreams. Much better than "just a teen soap", One Tree Hill is just so much better. It's for anyone, I'm a guy, which shows guys can like it too. It's not a girly soap opera, it's a show for everyone, even adults.
I highly recommend this, but be aware, it's highly addictive.

Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season (2004) Review

Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Desperate Housewives" is an absolute phenomenon! I remember I saw an advert on Channel 4 over here in England advertising this new show and just from the advert I knew I'd love it. So did 5 million other Brits who tuned in when the first episode premiered on January 5th 2005. Since that first episode the nation has been hooked. This is easily the most popular US-import show in the country and literally everyone at my college talks about it on a Thursday morning after the previous night's episode. I must confess, I watch it religiously on my own in our conservatory every Wednesday night and if anyone dare disturb me I will be seriously p***ed off!
In a world saturated with reality TV and bad talk shows, Desperate Housewives is a breath of fresh air. Creator Marc Cherry is a Godsend to women all over the world, and it was clear from the beginning that this show was going to become totally global. I mean I've heard stories about this show getting upwards of 30 million viewers in America! That's absolutely incredible, and this DVD will sell millions upon its release, trust me.
So what makes Desperate Housewives so addictive? For me, there are a number of things. Firstly, the cast is impeccable. The four main stars of the show are Teri Hatcher (who plays Susan Mayer), Marcia Cross (who plays Bree Van De Kamp), Felicity Huffman (who plays Lynette Scarvo) and the sensational Eva Longoria (who plays Gabrielle Solis). My personal favourite is Marcia Cross, because she is just so amazing. She is a gorgeous, fabulous gay icon and she is a true star! Her character is so particular. To begin with, we hate her, but over time she grows on you.
Secondly, I would say the blend of genres make this show effortlessly appealing. The mix of comedy and drama is achieved within a degree of perfection, tossing the viewer from laugh-out-loud moments to those moments of tension. It is a credit to the writers that they have sustained this throughout the entire first season. If we are to look at other successful shows such as Buffy, The X-Files, Friends, Will & Grace and Sex And The City, the pinnacle of excellence usually peaks after the first season, so for Desperate Housewives to hit the mark straight away sets the bar very high. I'm confident that they can improve the formula in the second season.
The imagery of the first season is just beautiful, too. The white picket fences, show home houses and lush green lawns define the show, and Wisteria Lane in general. However, they also serve as a major juxtaposition to the sensational storylines that bubble away under the surface. The murders, the affairs, the breakdowns and the shameful secrets are what keep us hanging on like vultures indeed, desperate, for more. Speaking of the storylines, they may not be the most original or inventive, but its with the amazing cast of actors that these storylines become something on their own entirely. So much happens in one episode that you may totally forget about it in the next! There is a small army of co-stars who decorate the sidewalks of the show as the spotlight falls on our four main characters and the troubles that revolve around them.
The season's main draw is the death of Mary Alice Young, and why she chose to kill herself with a revolver. This question is carried throughout the whole season, from the very first few minutes of the pilot episode where we see her kill herself. Details are gradually revealed throughout the season as the plot thickens. I'm not going to go into much detail about this storyline, or indeed the many others that make this season so jam-packed, because I'm sure you know it all yourself, but what I will say is that I love the way the characters are portrayed. There's a sense of fantasy about the whole neighborhood, in that everyone is a nosey beggar and wants to know everyone else's business. One such example is Mrs. Huber. The way death doesn't seem to affect many of the show's characters is also part of its appeal, as the show adopts an almost retro look at classic comedies with nifty stories and camp backdrops.
OVERALL GRADE: 10/10
After so many of my favourite TV shows ended in 2003 and 2004, I was looking for something new to watch, but I never thought I'd find something as brilliant as Desperate Housewives. I say find, when really I should say 'realise' because this show has hit like a tidal wave. I sure will be buying the first season on DVD when it is finally released over here in the UK, and I'm sure you need no motivation from me to buy it as well! This review merely serves as a culmination of TV's biggest phenomenon. Here's to many more great years to come!

American Dad, Vol. 4 Review

American Dad, Vol. 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The following 14 episodes will be on this set:
Tearjerker
Oedipal Panties
Widowmaker
Red October Sky
Office Spaceman
Stanny Slickers
Spring Break-Up
1600 Candles
The One That Got Away
One Little Word
Choosy Wives Choose Smith
Escape From Pearl Bailey
Pulling Double Booty
The Most Adequate Christmas Ever
What this means is that there will be 14 episodes left unreleased from the current(4th) season. Hopefully they will release those after the season and then maybe they can just release full seasons instead of these partial season "volumes" we have been getting(at full season prices , might I add). As far as the show itself.......well , my title says it best! In it's 4th season , the show continues to get better and better every week. The episode "Tearjerker" is probably the best one on this set. It is the one parodying the James Bond Movies. As much as I loved the Family Guy Star Wars Parody , in my humble opinion , this is far superior. My only bone to pick with the writers is that Klaus seems to be used a little less than in the early episodes. This set will also contain the usual bonus features ( Deleted Scenes , Commentary , Unrated/Uncensored Episodes , etc.)
BTW To those wondering about the future of the show , FOX has extended this show for a 5th season!
UPDATE: I picked up my copy today and one little note for the few that might care. The packaging is different from the first 3 Volumes. The case is smaller , the size of a single dvd case with three slots inside for the discs.

The Blair Witch Project (1999) Review

The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems like everyone now enjoy's ripping on "The Blair Witch Project", and I don't get it?! It's almost like when you scare the hell out of that kid when you are in 6th grade, and he might have been screaming wide-eyed with fright, only to tell you a couple minutes later "Hey, You Didn't Scare Me", just to repair his pride or ego. When I first saw "Blair Witch", it did scare me, and left me a little rattled at the end.....why? Because when I went to see it in the theater, there was still a strong buzz about the movie that it was either really an aborted documentary, or was a film based on true events...we were supposedly seeing the genuine article. Sure, I may have been duped by a clever marketing campaign that involved TV mocumentaries, internet gossip and radio buzz.....and looking back I think that was great. "Blair Witch" if nothing else, is a wonderful homage to William Castle, who back in the day of "The Tingler" would wire theater seats to shock select members of the audience to induce a well timed scream, or his film "The House on Haunted Hill", where skeletons would buzz the audience, or his movie "Straight Jacket" in which he offered the audience a chance to buy life insurance in case the film scared them to death. That is great stuff that put butts in the theater seats, and with the advances in technology, and modern communication, "Blair Witch" and it's marketing campaign did the same thing, only the updated version. It worked, the movie made a ton of dough and was the water-cooler talk around theoffice for weeks. Did I feel let down when I learned "Blair Witch" was just a movie? No. I applauded the idea behind the movie, and only wish more films would do the same. As far as the actual movie goes when I watch it on dvd....well it doesn't pack the same punch as when you might think these were actual events, but I still get a kick out of it. And it's obvious this film hit's a nerve with quite a few people, I mean at this time there are over 1700 reviews posted here at Amazon about this movie...most are ripping the film apart....but there just seems to be a hint of that 6th grader saying "Yeah....you didn't scare me" as they rush over to turn on the lights after the movie ends.

Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Third Season (2006) Review

Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Third Season (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm disturbed to see how negative people are giving the reviews of season 3. Granted, they could have done more in depth with the relationships, but I think they have a purpose. I think they want the show to last as long as the contract they have with ABC and then some, but if everything were to go perfect, the show would get dull. I believe this season, the theme was that fairytales don't always have a happy-ending. That life isn't going to be perfect and things aren't going to work out just because you hope it does. There was a lot of miscommunication or not at all. Perhaps Season 4 will change things up a bit.
Don't look too much in the reviews, I love watching the show, whether if it's not to my wanting meredith/derek together. I love the chemistry between them, the storylines, and the cases they have. If you love the show, don't dismiss this just because of the negative reviews.

The O.C.: The Complete First Season (2003) Review

The O.C.: The Complete First Season (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first season of "The O.C." was the guilty pleasure of the 2003-2004 television series, although when it popped up in the summer of 2003 that really was more the end of the 2002-2003 television series. After CBS had its great success with the original "Survivor" as a summer series, it took a while for somebody to take the next step, which was what FOX did when they offered up this new soap opera into the wasteland of summer reruns. Actually, the first seven episodes that aired in August and September constituted a test run for "The O.C.," which came back with another twenty episodes starting at the end of October.
The appeal of the show based on the early buzz and media attention was supposed to be on the relationship between Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), the boy from the wrong side of the track who is given a second chance by a compassionate lawyer, and Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton), the spoiled little rich girl who lives next door. Basically the selling point was that he looked like a young Russell Crowe and she looked like a young Twiggy. But star-crossed lovers have been down to death, especially with the entire bad boy meets good girl angle, and the real reason we got hooked on this show was the Cohens, Sandy (Peter Gallagher) and Seth (Adam Brody).
Clearly the sarcasm gene is dominant on the male side of the Cohen family. When Seth is once again the target of golden boy Luke Ward (Chris Carmack), he goes down with his mouth flapping, noting that at least he does not shave his chest. As Sandy says where he accuses Seth of being sarcastic and his son denies the charge, "Well, it's hard to tell sometimes." Actually it is just safer to assume the Cohens are being sarcastic. As the only female Cohen points out about her strange little home, "It's just a laugh riot around here." She, of course, is being ironic (rather than sarcastic), because as Sandy tells Seth, "I love your mother more than words, but not funny." But she's cynical and he's self-righteous, and it appears to be working out fine as long as her father stays out of the picture.
This is not to say that the others do not have their moments. After all, Marissa does listen to the Cramps and Stiff Little Fingers instead of Avril Lavigne, but none of the others are in Sandy and Seth's league. As for Ryan, as Seth points out he is now a Cohen, which means he has entered "a world of insecurity and paralyzing self-doubt." The problem is that with Ryan around to protect him, Seth fears that he might be getting soft, but he obviously does not need to worry about forgoing the "Seth Cohen retaliatory zinger."
Plus, Seth's love life is much more interesting than what Ryan is going through, where he and Luke just keep punching each other out over Marissa (pay attention and you will notice that only one of the first seven episodes does NOT have a punch thrown in it). Seth, on the other hand(s), is trying to juggle both Anna (Samaire Armstrong) and Summer (Rachel Bilson). Of course he makes the wrong choice. Anna already has a fine appreciation of graphic novels, whereas Summer has to be schooled in the basics of comic books. Seth still wants Summer because he has been the girl of his dreams (if you know what I mean), and having her fall for him provides a level of validation that Anna can never hope to match, even with her Jenga skills. She tries hard, but Summer is just not good enough for Seth.
I think the standout episode of the first season is "The Heartbreak," where Seth loses his virginity to Summer only to discover that the experience was not all that he thought it would be. Not only does Seth get a hearty pat on the back from Sandy, but his father also brings up the idea of foreplay, which compels Seth to try, try again. Yes, there is the joke about Summer declaring they are not having sex again and Seth agreeing that they have had "enough pain and suffering," but the idea that first love could be so disastrous is rather appealing. If there is a lesson here regarding teenage sex it would be that you should know what you are doing. None of these kids do and see what happens to them.
By the time we get to the first season's cliffhangers the only one I really cared about was Seth heading out to sea. The relationship between Ryan and Luke ends up being more interesting than the one between Ryan and Marissa, who find a new reason not to have sex pretty much every single week. Jimmy Cooper (Tate Donovan), Marissa's father, rips off everybody in town and still comes across better than his wife, Julie (Melinda Clarke), who goes after Kirsten's father, Caleb Nichol (Alan Dale) and ends up marrying him in the season finale. We dislike him the most because Sandy dislikes him the most. I do not care if Jimmy and Hailey (Amanda Righetti), Kirsten's sister, end up together because I am depressed over what happened with the restaurant and the competing meatloaf recipes.
Trash television is an important part of a balanced television diet. You can watch literate shows like "The Gilmore Girls," enjoy the take of "The West Wing" on important political topics, debate the wrong moves of the castaways on "Survivor," wrestle with God's will during "Joan of Arcadia," and enjoy the delightful wickedness of "Desperate Housewives." But sometimes you just need to wallow in a prime time soap opera, and with "The O.C." we have one that has the constant collision of characters and plot lines with the sort of wit we usually find only on Tina Fey's half of "Weekend Update."

Dane Cook - Vicious Circle (2006) Review

Dane Cook - Vicious Circle (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There's probably not a lot I can say about "Vicious Circle," Dane Cook's Boston performance in the round filmed for HBO. Whether or not you enjoy a one-man comedy concert largely depends on how much you enjoy the particular comedian. Dane Cook has obviously become huge in the last few years, and this concert showcase is very likely to please his fans.

Dane Cook is not the most cutting-edge comic, his material will never be construed as dark or dangerous. But what he has going for him is a real likability factor. He is a gifted storyteller assuming different voices and really throwing his whole body into the routine. In a goofy, non-threatening way--he's the guy you want to be your best friend, the class clown and the genial fratboy all rolled up into one.

The success of his comedy lies in the fact that he spins instantly recognizable scenarios. It is very easy to identify with him as a person, and it's easy to relate to his jokes. There is just something universal and true in most of his performance, so you can appreciate it and see yourself in his observations. Very watchable and entertaining, I enjoyed this concert. I think Dane is a great talent and my hope is for him to someday parlay his gift into making movies more worthy of his appeal (yes, I'm talking "Employee of the Month")! KGHarris, 10/06.

Family Guy, Vol. 5 (Season 5, Part 1) (1999)
Average Reviews:

This review wil not be helpful to other readers, but I just wanted to voice my displeasure with the repeated release of half seasons. This is an unacceptable format and is just one little screw you that the target audience of the show (college age - 35 year old males) will put up with for awhile. This will and has inspired resentment in friends of mine and has caused them to view recent seasons more harshly. This is still a great show, but when half a season costs $39.99, the listed price, that means the price of a full season would be 80$. With other shows, such as the simpsons, selling COMPLETE seasons for 20$ it makes it dificult to shell out cash for another half season of Family Guy. The goodwill the show has built up with its hilarity won't last much longer when it continually screws its fans. Either release full seasons or sell the half seasons at $20 or less.In summary buy this DVD if you love Family Guy, which I do, but beware that your only getting half a season. You may want to buy some Simpsons seasons instead and get twice the length of entertainment.

Mad Men: Season Three Review

Mad Men: Season Three
Average Reviews:

From day one, this show has not disappointed. It has some of the best writing and acting that Hollywood has produced for a television show in a long time and it has the awards to prove it. It's a highly stylized look at a Madison Avenue advertising agency and the people who work there and has been extremely enjoyable. Season 3 has had the best writing and acting and the last 3 episodes have been the best out of all 39 episodes produced to date. You cannot truly appreciate season 3 without watching seasons 1 and 2 so if you are new to the series, please do yourself a favor and watch them before consuming season 3, you will not be disappointed.

Baby Einstein - Baby MacDonald - A Day on the Farm (2004) Review

Baby Einstein - Baby MacDonald - A Day on the Farm (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Baby MacDonald: A Day on the Farm is a multiple award-winning DVD that's a fun-filled introduction to the sights and sounds of a farm. Featuring live-action images of farms and farm animals interspersed with engaging visuals of puppets, children, toys, and real-world objects, it combines traditional nursery rhymes with the classical music of Schubert, Schumann and Strauss. This DVD has a calming effect on your baby while stimulating their early verbal skills. It's appropriate for introduction to baby around the age of 9 months but will continue to entertain through their second year. Most of the videos in the Baby Einstein series are designed as `video board books' for your baby and offer you the opportunity to interact with your child in the same way you do with books as well as act as a distraction for that deeply needed parental bathroom break. Most of the DVDs have the option to "play" or "repeat play" and are about 20-30 minutes in length -- the repetition being very stimulating and comforting to the younger set.
While I don't think viewing Baby Einstein DVDs will make my infant "smarter" she sure does enjoy them! They give me a great way to interact with her as well as a few minutes here and there to get a few things done around the house. Their ability to calm her when she's fussy is already legendary in our household.
Here is information on all the current 21 Baby Einstein DVDs including suggested times to introduce them to your little one. This information IS NOT available with the DVD sets but I gleaned it from several sources for my own use. You may like to print this out for future reference.
