Woodstock, the 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition is an wonderful box but far from perfect. If you have the 1994 Director's Cut you already have the meat of this box set. The extra songs are great (really!) but only worth paying for if you're itching for any new footage. Of course, if you don't already have a version of the Woodstock concert on DVD, then by all means get this box. The extra DVD contains three songs from the Creedence Clearwater Revival set which is fantastic to finally see (along with extra songs from another dozen groups). And PLEASE buy if from Amazon as they include their own exclusive DVD with a few very rare songs (limited time). The Life magazine reprint is fun but I would have preferred they replaced most of the "stuff" with another DVD. My personal peeve is the absence of Melanie. Even it you get this box set, it will still be worth the money to buy the 2 DVD set of +Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock+ and (if you still have a VHS player that works) its also worth seeking out the VHS tape from 1991 titled, +Woodstock: The Lost Performances+ which contains a hour of songs that are not in the new box set. The extra songs in the new box set are not integrated into the Movie, so you will have to change DVD's to see all the songs of a particular group. Perhaps when the 50th Anniversary rolls around we will finally get a box that puts all the performance footage together as it ought to be. If not, maybe we can have our Cryogenically frozen heads defrosted in time for the 100th Anniversary (don't count on it). Oh, as to the complaints of others about the songs being "corrected", just ignore them, the sound is great.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve Review

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trans-Siberian Orchestra. One great band, one amazing concept. This DVD contains music taken from the bands first two albums. (Christmas Eve and Other Stories & The Christmas Attic.) The DVD contains a nice mix of the bands original music + a great little story intertwined to go along with it. The story is that of a run-away girl who, to escape the cold one night enters an abandoned theater. Inside she meets The Caretaker, played by Ossie Davis. While inside he introduces her to an amazing show only the likes of angels (actually the spirits and ghosts of the theater) could have performed. The show is that of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In the act they are joined by Jewel singing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," and by Michael Crawford singing "O Holy Night." The Caretaker uses the imagery of the show to help the girl to change her life. Such songs as "Good King Joy," "Music Box Blues," "This Christmas Day," and "Christmas Canon" are performed to wonderful amazement. As well, on some songs the band is joined by a beautiful children's choir. Hearing them alone will bring a tear to your eye. Some complain about the length of the DVD. Sure, it may only be 46 minutes long, but it is a 46 minute adventure that is well worth it. The disc lacks in the special feature area, but there is a complete discography and a bonus track; the `Timeless Version' of "Christmas In Sarajevo." I highly recommend this DVD. The T.S.O. have done an excellent job of telling a story while showing the kind of music they produce. The tale is heart-warming, the music is emotionally intense and this is one DVD that is good any time of the year. And the best part is that you can share with others besides the ghosts on Christmas Eve.

TOS's THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS EVE - now available for the first time on VHS and DVD - is a unique fantasy trip through the magic of Christmas. Narrated by award-winning actor Ossie Davis, the production takes us on a journey of a runaway little girl's decision to return to her family after she enters a rundown theater for shelter and encounters an old caretaker who guides her on her journey. This magical story - which features appearances from Atlantic recording artists Jewel and Michael Crawford - was filmed entirely on location at the newly refurbished and historic Loews Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, New Jersey, and includes performances of such tracks as "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Good King Joy," "Christmas Canon," "Music Box Blues," "Promises To Keep," and "This Christmas Day,". Track Listing: O' Come All Ye Faithful/O Holy Night Good King Joy Hark! The Herald Angels Sing -- Featuring Jewel Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24) Christmas Canon O Holy Night -- Featuring Michael Crawford Music Box Blues Promises To Keep This Christmas Day First Snow

Rush Chronicles - The DVD Collection (1984) Review

Rush Chronicles - The DVD Collection (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a MAJOR Rush fan, having seen them some dozen times over the years starting with twice in one year on their Farewell to Kings tour in 1977. That's the Rush I fell in love with -- the one that created side-long epics like 2112 and the classic Cygnus X-1 and its follow-up, Hemispheres.
Sadly, my interest began to wane after Signals and almost totally petered out by the Power Windows and Hold Your Fire era, which was in large part their entire '80s catalog.
I began to gain new respect for Rush when they released Roll the Bones, Counterparts and Test For Echo, however, and now eagerly await the new album they're allegedly working on.
Like previous reviewers, I own the videos Exit Stage Left and Grace Under Pressure Tour 1984 and have been waiting -- along with all other fans -- for their first-ever DVD release.
Well, Chronicles The DVD Collection is out. And I have it. And it's really nice to see these music videos again, but -- as I said at the beginning -- I'm a fan of the older material. I liked Geddy Lee's Rickenbacker bass and Alex's cream colored Gibson ES-355 used on the Farewell tour!
The sound and picture quality are just about right, given what this collection is. You won't get perfection and it won't do you any good to whine about pictures and sound that aren't pristine.
All the big hits are here. It's fun to watch vintage Rush. (Check out the hair styles slowly getting shorter with each video...along with the instruments changing from Gibsons and Rickenbackers to Fenders and Wals.)
I couldn't ask for more regarding this collection. It is what it is. It's great, in fact. If you ask me what I'd LIKE to see, however, it's entire concerts on DVD, some from as long ago as their Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres period right on up through to their Test For Echo tour. Music videos are fun and interesting, but it's the live performances that really brought out the best in Rush. So, please, let's see some Rush concert DVDs released in the next year or two!

Patti Labelle - Live One Night Only (2000) Review

Patti Labelle - Live One Night Only (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Where Live In New York was funky, get-down Patti, Live! One Night Only is classy, elegant Patti. That is not to say the Diva is not as high energy as always, but that you can see her true beauty and grace in this tape filmed at the beautiful Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. If you've never seen Patti, she's a rare performer who takes you to the clouds with her first note, and doesn't let you back down until two days after the show is over. Patti starts the show in the back of the house, belting out the classic I Believe. Act I concludes with a performance of You Are My Friend/Lord's Side that'll make you swear you see Jesus clappin' his hands. Act II is Patti at her best! Backed by a full orchestra, Patti covers songs from Edith Piaf, Dionne Warwick, Ashford & Simpson and others. She closes out with a powerhouse performance of Over the Rainbow/I Believe I Can Fly. Even superstars Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey join in the fun. You'll laugh, you'll cry and then you'll start the show all over again just to experience it one more time. My only concern. . .can your soul and your speakers handle the performance?

Bon Jovi: Live at Madison Square Garden (2010) Review

Bon Jovi: Live at Madison Square Garden (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is simply Bon Jovi at their best. The Label on the plastic cover states "A Concert 25 years in the making." This is a "mature" Bon Jovi performing at their best. This includes some songs from their recent album "Lost Highway", plus their classics. This was filmed during 2008, and has a running time of 2 hours & 23 minutes, approximately. This is a fantastic lengthy concert. You certainly get your money's worth with this one.
The songs include:
1.Lost Highway (This is not the Hank Williams song, it's an original Bon Jovi song.)
2.Born to Be My Baby.
3.Blaze of Glory.
4.It's my Life.
5.Keep the Faith.
6.Raise Your Hands.
7.Living in Sin.
8.Chapel of Love.
9.Always.
10.Whole Lot of Leavin'.
11.In These Arms.
12.We Got it Going On.
13.I'll be There for You.
14.(You Want to) Make a Memory.
15.Blood on Blood.
16.Dry County.
17.Have a Nice Day.
18.Who Says You Can't Go Home.
19.Hallelujah.
20.Wanted Dead or Alive.
21.Livin' On a Prayer.
22.Bad Medicine (This is played during the credits portion.)
Bonus Songs:
23.You Give Love a Bad Name.
24.Runaway.
25.Bed of Roses.
This is one fatastic concert, and I highly recommend it. Thanks!!!!

Metallica - Some Kind of Monster (2004) Review

Metallica - Some Kind of Monster (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went with four people to see this film. Two (myself included) were Metallica fans and the other two were not. The film opens like some sort of MTV expo piece with James Hetfield riding in his tricked out vintage roadster and Lars Ulrich laying on his couch with his Basquiat hanging on the wall. Not even five minutes go by and it shows the group, minus recently departed Jason Newsted, in therapy discussing their concern that they have about embarking on recording their first album in five years. Little did they know that it would take two years to make. What you get is a riveting, profound and at often times very funny documentary.
What I really applaud the band for is this: They bought the rights to the documentary so that they could have a say in the final cut. Instead of glossing over scenes that aired the dirty laundry of the band, which is what you would think they would do in a case like this, they let it all out.
And not in a counter-culture, rebellious, grandstanding kind of way either. It's sincere and thats what makes the film work.
James Hetfields door slamming, Lars' watery-eyed confrontations and Kirk unable to make declarative sentences does not put them in the best light, but it makes them real.
They confront their demons head-on with therapist Phil Towle and producer Bob Rock tow. Die hard fans might roll their eyes and laugh at prospect of the band in need of a shrink. Trust me, stick with it and don't let it scare you away from the theatre. Most of the time it is hilarious and at the bands expense. Lars Ulrichs father is a scream and when one of the toughest metal bands try to communicate with one another in their new found "therapy lingo" it comes across as comical and awkward as you might think. And yes, they talk about Cliff's death and the Napster ordeal as well. They also visit Jason Newsted and (bonus for fans) Dave Mustaine. My friend and I could pick out the Metallica fans from the documentary fans in the theatre when Dave popped up.
This movie is not solely for fans should not be missed no matter what your preference in music or your opinion of the band. Non-fans, as my other friends will attest, will enjoy this as well.
This year there has been great year for documentaries and this is one that should not be overlooked in the mix.

Pink Floyd - Pulse Review

Pink Floyd - Pulse
Average Reviews:

It's hard to find words for what I experience when viewing this video. My husband and I watched it for the first time together and afterwords we agreed we'd have to watch it again to be sure that what we saw was real. This may be a BIT exagerated - but not much! The visuals on this film are extaordinary! The light show is amazing and so well choreographed! The sound is SO good and the musical quality SO superb that I have actually begun to PREFER many of the cuts to the studio versions! I've fallen in love with David Gilmore whose smile makes him look little boyish and sweet. The newly added Floyd musicians look like they cannot BELIEVE who they are on stage with and are having the time of their lives. 145 minutes of SHEER bliss from the first note to the very last! THREE SONGS for an encore - you cannot believe it when it happens! You imagine what you would have thought being at this concert and even getting ONE encore song - when they come out with THREE you are blown away - and they are lavishly done! I don't understand some of the reviewers saying that Gilmore seemed bored and unhappy to be there - seems to me that he is either concentrating on the current guitar lick or smiling at one of the other band members -trust me - he smiles a LOT in this video. I could go on and on but I won't. Let me just say that having already purchased this video I will be one of the first to put out more money the DAY this one comes out on DVD - as soon as we heard that it was scheduled for release on DVD in early 2000 we went out and bought a DVD player - THAT'S how much we loved this concert! My ONLY regret is that I missed it live and it was only 2 hours away from where I live! SIGH... well THAT won't happen again. For someone who wasn't sure she would like the Floyd without Roger - I have become one of their biggest fans! It also renewed my interest in the Division Bell which I had previously not given much time to. Now I am a devotee of that CD as well. Ok - now buy it! OR wait for the DVD! Enjoy.

The Best Of Soul Train (3 DVD) (2010) Review

The Best Of Soul Train (3 DVD) (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Soooooouuuuuullllll Train! I'm as white as they come, but I loved this show in its heyday. I was 12 when it premiered in 1970. It was a window into a culture as smooth and brash in its musicality and vernacular as it was in its dyn-o-mite dancing and day-glo fashion. Don Cornelius was the serene ruler of this kingdom, speaking in a voice both sonorous and mellifluous, wearing royal silk shirts and maroon velveteen suits, not a hair out of place in his afro crown. I tuned in both to groove to the great songs and to make myself just a bit hipper, and my own record collection, bellbottoms, wide lapels, and platform shoes were evidence of my devotion to the music and the people who produced it.
There is no way this 3-DVD set, with its wide array of stars and 50 great songs spread over five hours, could deserve less than the highest rating, even if the mastering were second rate. But the audio and video reproduction are excellent; Time-Life knows its stuff. And there are more than three hours of extras consisting primarily of lengthy retrospctive interviews with such figures as the imperturbable Don Cornelius and the voluble Smokey Robinson.
This wonderful compilation is a priceless sampler of the 1970s and a who's who of classic soul, from the Queen to the Godfather. Among others, you'll find represented Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, The Isley Brothers, The O'Jays, The Commodores, Sly Stone, Barry White, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Curtis Mayfield, and Jaaaaaaaaaames Brown! "The Best of Soul Train" needs a star in its rating for every star on the DVDs!
Two cautions: The Spinners, The Chi-Lites, The Temptations, The Four Tops, and The Stylistics do not appear on this set, despite what the product description claims, and some of the performers lip-sync. A complete list of the contents:
DVD 1
The Isley Brothers - "That Lady" / "Live It Up" / "Summer Breeze"
Barry White - "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe" / "What Am I Gonna Do with You" / "You're the First, the Last, My Everything"

Sly & The Family Stone - "I Want to Take You Higher" / "Dance to the Music"

The O'Jays - "Backstabbers"
Aretha Franklin - "Rock Steady"

Elton John: Elton 60 - Live at Madison Square Garden (2007)
Average Reviews:

I was there the night of March 25th 2007 and what an evening it was. I know that's cliche but of the 9 times I have seen him, this was the absolute best show I have seen yet. Not only did he play for 3 1/2 hours, but he rocked it out like only the greatest of all time can. To hear his voice now performing 60 Years On to open his 60th birthday was beautiful, and that was just the first of 33 songs! He played for the die hard fans Where to Now St Peter, Ballad of a Well Known Gun, All the Young Girls Love Alice, and many others we haven't heard live in well over 20 years at least. If you're an Elton fan, you most defiantely have to get this. You'll fall in love all over again. If you are just a casual Elton listener, this will make you really understand how wonderful he truly is, and hopefully get you to dig deeper into the archive that is Reg Dwight's music. I will never forget that night forever. It was simply amazing and now everyone will get to experience just how magical the evening was.
