Woodstock, the 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition is an wonderful box but far from perfect. If you have the 1994 Director's Cut you already have the meat of this box set. The extra songs are great (really!) but only worth paying for if you're itching for any new footage. Of course, if you don't already have a version of the Woodstock concert on DVD, then by all means get this box. The extra DVD contains three songs from the Creedence Clearwater Revival set which is fantastic to finally see (along with extra songs from another dozen groups). And PLEASE buy if from Amazon as they include their own exclusive DVD with a few very rare songs (limited time). The Life magazine reprint is fun but I would have preferred they replaced most of the "stuff" with another DVD. My personal peeve is the absence of Melanie. Even it you get this box set, it will still be worth the money to buy the 2 DVD set of +Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock+ and (if you still have a VHS player that works) its also worth seeking out the VHS tape from 1991 titled, +Woodstock: The Lost Performances+ which contains a hour of songs that are not in the new box set. The extra songs in the new box set are not integrated into the Movie, so you will have to change DVD's to see all the songs of a particular group. Perhaps when the 50th Anniversary rolls around we will finally get a box that puts all the performance footage together as it ought to be. If not, maybe we can have our Cryogenically frozen heads defrosted in time for the 100th Anniversary (don't count on it). Oh, as to the complaints of others about the songs being "corrected", just ignore them, the sound is great.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon Review

The U.S. vs. John Lennon
Average Reviews:

THE US VS. JOHN LENNON is a riveting documentary that shows how the judicial and immigration system works in the United States. John Lennon was placed under the microscope by President Nixon and the US FBI during the early 1970s because he posed as a threat to Nixon's political campaign, and an intense influence on the youth of America as a result of his music and iconoclastic image. Bottom line, the film focuses on Lennon's activism as well as the controversial and gray aspects of the meaning of activism and dissent.
Director David Leaf interweaves Lennon's music within the documentary with a collage of images of the mop-top Beatle to the bearded-hippie shouting for world peace from an Amsterdam hotel room alongside the press and fellow peers. The core participants and leaders of the late 1960s and early 1970s are presented in the film, such as John Sinclair, Angela Davis, J. Edgar Hoover, President Richard M. Nixon, and various writers and journalists who reported about Lennon. The interesting aspect are the recent interviews of those political activists who attempted to make a mark on society. Within Leaf's documentary is the past, but the political atmosphere of the present appears to parallel or bear similarities to the past.
THE US VS. JOHN LENNON is entertaining. In light of serious events that occurred in Lennon's life, he tend to press on. There are funny moments in the film as well as serious ones. But the film also presents the chilling aspects of the system of government, and the powers that be. Lennon may have been one the last influential figures of the 1960s who spoke and sang a thousand words to a generation that just wanted to be listened and understood, and politics did not stop him from creating his love of music for all to hear.
This film is highly recommended for all Lennon fans as well as those who would like to understand the relationship between politics and music.

The compelling and provocative story of John Lennon's evolution from beloved Beatle to outspoken artist and activist to iconic inspiration for peace, and how, in the midst of one of the most tumultuous times in American history, Lennon stood his ground, refused to be silenced and courageously won his battle with the U.S. Government.

Finding Your life's Purpose (2008) Review

Finding Your life's Purpose (2008)

This DVD is very clear and practical. If you only watch or listen to one program by Eckhart Tolle, this is the one to get. Most human beings live in a virtual reality world of mental constructs, and they rarely experience the richness of this moment. They are continually looking for a purpose in the future, while missing their primary purpose: to fully experience What Is, in this moment. On this DVD, Eckhart discusses:
* The concept of Time. I've never heard it explained so clearly. There is no past and no future. All that we call "time" is a mental abstraction. We rush around wishing we had more time, and all we have is this moment. His discussion on Time brings the topic back to your purpose: to live your life in this moment (rather than wasting it living in mental abstraction).
* Achievement vs. Purpose. Eckhart travels the world speaking and teaching, and has certainly achieved far more than most people. His achievements and efforts have arisen out of the present moment awareness that he lives in. When your focus is on the end result, and in the process of achieving that result, you miss your real purpose (finding your sense of home, self and completeness in this moment), your achievements take on far less meaning. Let your motivation for achievement arise out of the completeness of being IN your purpose (as opposed to trying to complete yourself by achieving some purpose you made up in your head).
----
Contrary to the one-star reviewer of this DVD's opinion, Eckhart is not suggesting finding your purpose in sitting on the couch, eating & watching Oprah all day. But of course, Jesus never advocated many of the things that have been said and done in the name of Christianity either. Those who have ears to hear tend to hear, and the rest walk away with more mental constructs to add to their virtual selves.
This DVD isn't just for people looking for their first Eckhart Tolle experience. If you have been reading, listening to and watching Eckhart for years this DVD is well worth the investment.
Most people want to find their purpose because they are looking for completion, for fulfillment, and to be all they can be. This DVD will show you where to find that purpose. As to what you do, what you accomplish, what you achieve, etc... that's something else.
So here's the big question: If you are completely fulfilled, will you be motivated to do anything, or will you just sit around, eat and watch Oprah? Some people think you have to be unfulfilled in order to accomplish anything. They seem to think that all achievement arises out of unfulfillment. This philosophy turns you into a Human Doing; looking for that next achievement to complete your self. But you never get there. Human Beings find their purpose in Being. Out of that place of completion and fulfillment they achieve great things.
I wouldn't have taken the time to write this review, but I initially saw the one-star review and didn't want people to miss a great DVD for the wrong reasons.

If you ve been searching in vain to find your true purpose in life, Echkhart Tolle has some straightforward advice: stop struggling. For the primary purpose of every human being is simply to be-fully engaged in this moment, aligned with the natural flow of reality itself. On Finding Your Life Purpose, the bestselling author of A New Earth invites viewers to discover the twofold intention of our human incarnation: first, to free yourself from thought-based reality and its inherent dissatisfaction; and, second, to express in your own way the grand vision that universal consciousness has for your life.

Instinct (1999) Review

Instinct (1999)

I was prepared to not like this movie. There were so many negative and lukewarm reviews. I'm glad I watched it in spite of those reviews.
This is a deeply moving story about an anthropologist who leaves everything behind and lives with a group of gorillas - we get glimpses of that life later in movie. The beginning of the movie is a portrait of him as a madman, who doesn't speak, and has killed two park rangers. He is transported to the U.S. and awaits trial in a prison for the criminally insane. Cuba Gooding Jr. is a psychiatrist who is trying to get him to come out of his shell and speak. Cuba Gooding Jr's performance is the stand out in this awe inspring movie.
For fear of giving too much away, I won't say much more. I will say, however, that this movie is not so much about the crime itself. It is more about the transforming nature of love and respect and, ultimately, the meaning of freedom.
Unlike some other reviewers, I would heartily recommend this film. It is a movie that makes you think. It is a movie that will be on your mind for days and days. It just may transform the way you think.

Don't miss Academy Award(R)-winners Anthony Hopkins (Best Actor, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE INNOCENT) and Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Best Supporting Actor, JERRY MAGUIRE, PEARL HARBOR) in this highly provocative psychological thriller from the hit-making director of PHENOMENON and WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING! In a prison for the criminally insane, deranged anthropologist Ethan Powell (Hopkins) is set to be examined by a bright young psychiatrist, Theo Caulder (Gooding). Driven by ambition and a hunger for the truth, Caulder will eventually risk everything -- even put his very life on the line -- in a harrowing attempt to understand the bizarre actions of this madman! Also starring Donald Sutherland (A TIME TO KILL, DISCLOSURE) and Maura Tierney (FORCES OF NATURE, LIAR LIAR) in a first-rate cast -- Powell and Caulder's adventure of the mind is a riveting journey of discovery ... no matter what the cost!
