I have to admit, I am the type of homeschool mother who reads reviews before purchasing what I use in training my children. Most of the reviews I read on the Leap Frog Learning DVD'S were positive and BOY were they ever right!! I have a 5 year old (almost 6) daughter who STRUGGLED learning alpha letters and sounds. She had her favorite letters, but I had to sit with her and go over and over and over the others....this was completely frustrating to her and I. That is until we received Leap Frog Learning DVD's 5 pack. These dvd's are educationally and musically stimulating. My daughter learned all of the alphabet sounds in less than a week, FOR REAL! She has taken to singing the songs and sounding out the letters so much that she is driving her brother crazy. She sounds her letters to sleep. She writes the alphabet on everything, upper and lower case. She tells us what a period, exclamation point and a comma is. And of course sings like mad! She has starting reading and LOVES it. This is by far the best money ever spent on teaching materials ~

Leap Frog - Talking Words Factory 2 - Code Word Caper Review

Leap Frog - Talking Words Factory 2 - Code Word Caper

The other reviews are right. If you like the Talking Words Factory, you should like this follow-on video.
In this episode, children are taught about long vowel sounds, 'silent E", blended letters (such as sh and th), as well as blended vowels (the old when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking).
In addition, children are shown how vowels are forced to say their names when E's are added to their ends. Fat becomes long-A fate, for example.
Worth the money, for sure. [Certainly my 2.5 year-old would not know his letters and their sounds without these videos.]

LeapFrog: Letter Factory (2003) Review

This is one of the best learning DVD's I have seen. It will be a great watch for the Pre-k to first grade classrooms. The DVD teaches the letter names. Most importantly, it teaches the letter sounds in a creative way. Viewers see the letters, hear the letter names, they see a picture/video that represents the sound each letter makes, and the viewer hears a catchy tune to match the letter sound. For instance, the letter C is shown in a cold environment with ice hanging from it. The letter comes to life by shivering and stating that it is /c/ /c/ /c/.... old. Then the characters in the story sing the catchy Leapfrog song; "The C says/c/, the C says /c/, every letter makes a sound. The C says /c/. This DVD/VHS is marketed towards parents to use with their PreK to First grader, but all teachers need to know about this video and share it with their class. It would be a great review or introduction to letter sounds. Teachers could also use the catchy phrases and visual representation of the letter sounds in their lessons by creating activities or visuals based on the video. Students will see the sounds letters make, hear the sounds, and sing the sounds. This video combined with strong phonics based classroom instruction will help reach a variety of learning styles and lead your students on the path to becoming strong readers.

LeapFrog: Talking Words Factory (2003) Review

LeapFrog: Talking Words Factory (2003)

My son was diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified when he was 3. PDD-NOS is on the Autism spectrum, and children with this diagnosis often have developmental delays.
My son had a speech delay and other developmental delays. His speech is great now...no one can detect that he has this diagnosis. However, the delays have, understandably, affected his learning in some areas.
While his spatial skills have been way above average--as has his grasp of science (such as planets and their attributes)--he has resisted reading. He gets tired and frustrated.
Well, trying many approaches for helping him, I thought I'd take a chance and get the Talking Words Factory from Amazon.com, especially since the reviews were so good.
I am very, very pleased with this DVD! My son watches it quite often, and he's now reading books on his own. I can see a marked difference in a matter of WEEKS. Before, he had to think about how some of the letters sounded. Now, he rattles them off like a pro--as well as 3-letter words!
This DVD also teaches about vowels and consonants, so he's learning how the vowels are sticky like glue, holding words together (thanks to Professor Quigley's Sticky-Ick-O-Rama machine!). The Word Whammer machine shows children how to put the consonants and vowels together, and how they sound. I like the fact that they'll switch around the vowels with the same beginning and ending consonants, to highlight how a vowel sounds within a word.
Talking Words Factory also teaches rhyming, which is a bonus.
Highly recommended!

The Complete Beginner's Guide to Knitting Review

The Complete Beginner's Guide to Knitting

I LOVE this DVD! I've looked at books, online instruction, and even had a family member try to teach me. None of those methods worked for me. The way Nici goes about teaching is like having a friend come over to give instructions. She is very clear and goes slowly. The DVD pauses in places so you can go ahead and then press play when you are ready. She teaches two methods, English and Continental. We chose Continental. I found out why my family member could not teach me.......she does English, and I'm all thumbs that way. So having both shown gives you the ability to select which works best for you. The only thing for a beginner that I found difficult was casting on. The DVD shows 3 ways of slip knotting to start, but does not show where the tail should go....front or back? My mom came over to show us - after casting on the tail goes in the front. This is where you will be using the yarn from the cast on your first 10 loops.....when you turn the needle around as you switch hands, your tail will be in the back where it needs to be. I know that sounds simple, but for a beginner it was a conundrum!! If the tail is in the front, you run out of yarn! Other than that tiny detail....every detail for knitting and purling is covered well!! There are close up angles and it is show "over the shoulder" so you are not watching her knit and then try to reverse it. If you want to learn to knit......buy this DVD...within a short while you'll be knitting away!
Nici covers the following:
Casting on - how to get started
the knit stitch - continental or english
The purl stitch - continental or english
add yarn - if you run out or want to add a color etc..
binding off - how to end
ribbing - how to knit and purl on the same row
increasing - adding stitches
decreasing - taking away stitches
gauge - how many stitches per inch to get the right size
finishing - sewing pieces together
first aid kit - HELP for mistakes
tips and advice - tips and advice :)
She also has a website, [....]. And there are other DVDs only I've not found them on Amazon??
