Undisputed III: Redemption Review

Undisputed III: Redemption

Isaac Florentine's Undisputed 3: Redemption is, in my opinion, the best of the Undisputed series may be meaningful to those who know the earlier films. Scott Adkins reprises his role as Russian inmate Boyka, now severely hobbled by the knee injury suffered at the end of Undisputed 2. No longer the feared prison fighter he was, he has declined so far that he is now good only for cleaning toilets. But when a new prison fight tournament begins - an international affair, matching the best fighters from prisons around the globe, enticing them with the promise of freedom for the winner - Boyka must reclaim his dignity and fight for his position in the tournament.
He succeeds, of course, and is packed off to Georgia where he meets his opponents. The brash American. The Brazilian capoeira expert. The North Korean tae kwon do expert. A Greek. A Croat. And, most to be feared, the Colombian(Mark Zaror).
The fix is in, of course. While all of the other fighters are forced to do hard labor, the Colombian - the fighter backed by the host prison - is left to live in relative luxury. While the others are denied basic food, the Colombian has drugs hand delivered by the warden.
ScottAdkins plays Boyka - the villain of the last installment - here as a gruff antihero looking for personal redemption. All the story stuff works as it should.

The prize: freedom for the champion... and a payday of millions to the organizers. District B13 (2004) Review

District B13 (2004)

Set in the year of 2010, `Dictrict B13' features two no-nonsense fighters Damian and Leito in the titular crime-infested area near the city of Paris. They fight the drug-addicted kingpin and his thugs before finally saving the world too. The story of French action film `District B13' (written by Luc Besson) needs lots of suspense of disbelief even though in reality we recently witnessed the outbreak of riots in this country. Still the actions of are all first-rate, and the two leads of the film Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle are more impressive than any other famous names from the Hollywood products.
Part buddy-buddy movie features crime-fighting Damian (stunt-turned actor Cyril Raffaelli, `Kiss of the Dragon') and ex-thug Leito (David Belle), both of whom have to join forces to accomplish the missions of their own. Not much is original, I admit, as far as the script by Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri (the latter also appears as the mobster) is concerned, but we are not watching this film for the story, and you should know it.
[EYE-POPPING STUNTS] The film will grab your attention from the opening section, where Leito runs away from the thugs sent from the gangster. For incredibly agile David Belle, jumping on the rooftops from one building to the other (like Jackie Chan in `Rumbles in Bronx') is not enough. Before doing these breath-taking stunts, he actually climbs down on the wall of the building, jumping from a balcony to the one below. And that's only the beginning of the eye-popping action sequences, in which like Buster Keaton he keeps running inside and outside of the buildings, and his rhythmical movements are often so beautiful that you might forget that he is really doing a death-defying actions.
[NO WIRE, NO CGI] Cyril Raffaelli is also great, showing the martial arts skills only the real stunt persons can reveal. You just have to see their stunts that are done by the actors themselves without using any wire and special effects (that's why it was shot in Romania, where the regulations are less strict). Their stunts remind the film fans of one Thai movie `Ong-Bak,' but the stunts in this French actioner are done in a different style with more vertical movements and less bone-crunching fighting. And they are both fantastic.
This is a non-stop French action hugely entertaining with incredible actions. You may not like the preposterous story, but once these actions start, you just cannot blink a second.

Damage (2009) (2009) Review

Steve Austin plays John Brickner, an ex-convict who was serving time for murder. John was able to be released thanks to a letter sent in by the wife of the man he killed, Veronica, only to find out that she had an alterior motive...for him to get money need for a heart transplant for her daughter. Unfortunally with John not being able to get the money with the two jobs he currently has, he meets up with his a co-worker Frankie & her friend Reno to go into the world of "no holds barred" underground fighting. John must keep fighting & winning in order to keep making the money while dealing with the pressure being put on him by Veronica & her personal problems, Reno oweing money to everyone they seem to do business with, and everything taking it's physical & emotional toll on him.
This was wasn't your basic one dimentional action movie as they were able to tell more than one story as each of the main characters did have an issue to overcome. The acting was good & Steve Austin did his role well. The action here was completely based on mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting with a hardcore element at times with weapons being occassionally used but for just straight fistfights...they come off very brutal & realistic.
In the end, if your a fan of heavy fight scenes that rely on "street fighting" over other ways of film action (explosions, gunfire, heavily chorographed fight scenes) then this is definately a movie worth checking out.

Fighting (2009) Review

This is generally not my kind of movie, but I did like it as it had kind of a Rocky element going. I also thought the actors gave sincere performances and the story was gritty enough to keep your attention - I get bored easily. As I watched it, I really felt this movie had a lot of potential to be great but because it was kind of rushed, it couldn't quite get there. If it could have taken a little more time to develop the characters and their relationships, it might have gotten there. I know that Channing Tatum is always criticized for his non acting ability, but if you really watch this movie, you can sense his potential, there were several times that you got a sincere sense from him that his character really wanted to do the right thing and Tatum does this more with expression than words. The only other thing that I feel could have been better was the connection between Shawn and Zulay, I just didn't get a sense of actual attraction, it really seemed kind of forced, like there was no choice. Obviously not one of the best movies of 2009 but certainly one of the better ones. I hope you enjoy it.

Small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Public Enemies) knows firsthand that every day in New York City is a struggle to survive. So when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard, Iron Man, Hustle and Flow) gives him a chance to be something more in the brutal underground world of bare-knuckle street-fighting, Shawn decides that he has something worth fighting for and puts everything on the line to win. Every knockout brings him closer to the life he’s always wanted, but also traps him in a dangerous web he can’t escape.

Bloodsport (1988) Review

Bloodsport (1988)

You all know the storyline. It's kinda cheesy and cliche by today's standards, but still... I've been watching this movie since I was a little boy and to this day I never get tired of it! Like someone else said... if this movie is on TV, there is NO WAY I'm not going to finish watching it. The whole thing just never gets old! Wow... for a movie made in 1988, it's still shown over and over again on cable television. That says something about how popular this movie is. It's by far the best Van Damme movie there is. And as a young impressionable boy, this movie is what got me interested in martial arts. I would stand in front of the TV watching this movie while trying to imitate all the moves I saw. Needless to say, I was the best fighter in first grade and performed many punches to kids' groins and spinning kicks to their faces while also breaking necks Chong Li style (ok im just kidding... but it does raise the issue of TV violence and its influence on children, doesn't it?) Anyways, good classic fight scenes that are also realistic (i.e. no wires, just man-to-man fighting). While in a real fight you would never perform the flying spin kicks nor would you take your sweet time walking up to your opponent and kicking him in the face as if he was too slow to react, the fight scenes are definitely entertaining and will put you into a hypnotic trance that will render you speechless and cause drool to drip out of your mouth (ok maybe not). Another thing I like about the movie is the movie soundtrack, i.e. the background music that's playing whenever there's a fight. Gets me pumped up and ready to go spin-kick someone at a gas station... then we start our own kumite in the back alley! Anyways, hope you enjoyed reading my review, because I enjoyed rambling during my review :D

Jet Li's Fearless (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (2006) Review

Jet Li's Fearless (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[The following review refers to the 104 minute version of `Fearless' released in Japan in March, 2006, starring Jet Li.]
`Fearless" is inspired by the life of Huo Yuan Jia, real-life Chinese martial arts master. Jet Li plays this legendary figure, whose martial arts style and fearless fight helped the people in China regain their pride in the early 20th century when China was intimidated and humiliated by the growing Western and Japanese powers.
Well, so much for the history. Now, let's talk about actions. In `Fearless' Jet Li has shown his best performance since the days he did `Once Upon A Time In China' playing the role of Wong Fei Hung, another legendary hero in China, and the fight scenes (choreographed by Yuen Woo Ping) are all fantastic, sometimes visceral, and sometimes graceful, and always powerful. Good and smooth editing and gorgeous production designs also help greatly to create the background.
[JET LI'S PHILOSOPHY] After the opening martial arts competition sequences in Shanghai, 1910, the film begins to follow the life of Huo Yuan Jia from the days he was a boy in a flashback section. Jet Li and director Ronny Yu (yes, the guy who did `Bride of Chucky' and `Freddy vs. Jason') made a wise decision in showing Collin Chou as Father of young Huo Yuan Jia because the image of charismatic Chou (previously seen in two `Matrix' sequels as body guard Seraph) as the stern father who forbids his son to fight well-represents Li's philosophy about martial arts.
Yes, `Fearless' is a first-rate martial arts action film, but the film is more than that. The film, which was released under the title of `Spirit' in Japan, has Li's message about martial arts, which impresses without being obtrusive.
Besides splendid Collin Chou, the film has assembled interesting names from in and outside of Asia: Nathan Jones as `Hercules' one of Huo Yuan Jia's opponents: Anthony De Longis as Spanish fighter: Brandon Rhea as German fighter: Masato Harada (seen in `The Last Samurai') as Mr. Mita. Debuting actress Sun Li (Betty Li) is impressive as a blind girl, and so is Dong Yong who steals the show as Huo Yuan Jia's old friend. But probably to the Western viewers the real find is the Japanese rising star Shidou Nakamura as Anno Tanaka samurai fighter. Nakamura, who will be seen Clint Eastwood's `Red Sun, Black Sand,' is already known as a talented actor in Japan, and he shows it with the brilliant fight scenes.
But the film is of course a Jet Li film, with the genuine actions that no one but he can do, and Li also succeeds in bringing life and dignity into the character of Huo Yuan Jia. As you know, it is said that `Fearless' will be the last martial arts film for Jet Li. I don't know if it is really true, but I know this is his best film in years.
