Mr. Nice Guy (1998) Review

Mr. Nice Guy (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With nearly non-stop action and thrills Jackie Chan's "Mr. Nice Guy" is probably without a doubt one of Jackie Chan's BEST films ever, featuring Chan's trademarked ultra-choreographed but jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring just plain AWESOME action sequences (including the trademarked end-of-film outtakes).
THE MOVIE:
A TV cook Chan unwittingly stumbles into the middle of a drug-related murder between Australian mobsters and a street gang when he saves the life of a woman and unknowingly comes into possession of her incriminating tape. From the get-go it's an all-out adventure ride setting the standard for the amount of action per frame as Jackie battles the mob while trying to save his girlfriend and his other friends.
Notable Scenes:
1.The Horse and Carriage Battle Scene
2.The Warehouse With Many Doors Fight Scene
3.The Ending Battle Which Puts Rumble In The Bronx's Hovercraft scene to shame!!
THE DVD FEATURES:
The DVD is a little sparse on special features, but it does contain a few great extras including a pretty detailed bio (more so than the Rumble in the Bronx DVD) and filmography of Jackie Chan as well as the film's theatrical trailer. Also included are selected scenes from some of Jackie's other films (Rush Hour, Rumble In The Bronx, First Strike, and Police Story all on sale from New Line Cinema).
THE VERDICT:
Action movie/martial arts film fans will love this movie. Fans of Jackie Chan will probably rate this toward the top of his movies as the action standards this film set are just off the charts!!! The action, as well as the story, are solid. New fans of Chan will also love this film and its mind-boggling action sequences. The DVD features, while a bit sparse compared to more recent DVD releases, are alright and are in fact a little better than his other releases with New Line. Overall, whether you rent, borrow or purchase this DVD/movie, it is worth a watch.
Highest Recommendation.

Martial Arts 50 Movie Pack Collection Review

Martial Arts 50 Movie Pack Collection
Average Reviews:

Some of the titles in MARTIAL ARTS 50 MOVIE PACK are so obscure, very little information could be gotten about them. A couple of selections here are from a long-forgotten American TV series. There's even a few spaghetti-karate films thrown into the mix. The majority however originate in the Far East: Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.
Lots of choreography went into the making of these movies; undoubtedly, there were a few unintentional injuries along the way, too. The action and pratfalls are non-stop and the plots mere window dressing for the foot-to-head combat scenes. For all martial arts fans these cinematic slugfests are sure-to-please.
Overall rating was achieved by averaging out viewer polling on 42 of these titles. Based on a film resource website's 1 to 10 scoring system, the current rating for MARTIAL ARTS is: 4.8.

Kill Switch (2008) Review

Kill Switch (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The career of action film star Steven Seagal has had enough ups and downs to appear like a rollercoaster ride in one of any hundred theme parks across the country. Beginning in 1988 with ABOVE THE LAW, Seagal burst upon the scene as a martial arts master in a film that featured plot, good acting and enough action that involved non-hand to hand combat to keep audiences screaming for more.
With each new film, Seagal developed more mystery about his personal life, played roles that were a little deeper and eventually was able to parlay his clout to make films that followed items dear to his heart. Unfortunately the more he did so, the smaller the crowds to his films.
In recent years Seagal's films have taken on that dreaded identity of direct to DVD features, movies that play in either no theater or limited run. This doesn't mean that the quality is lacking all the time, just that the studio behind it has less faith in the films than Seagal does. So he has kept making them knowing fans would show.
Fans support him enough that a book has recently been released, SEAGALOGY: A STUDY OF THE A** KICKING FILMS OF STEVEN SEAGAL by Vern, a contributing writer for the ain't it cool news web site. The book covers Seagal's films from beginning to end. But I'm not sure that it included the newest release, KILL SWITCH.
Seagal plays Jacob King, a detective working in Memphis, TN, and hot on the trail of a serial killer. The film opens on a case where a psycho has implanted C4 explosives in a young woman's chest with a timer set to go off in minutes. Confronting the killer, King beats a confession out of him in time to save the girl while inflicting enough damage to require medical support for said killer.
The scene moves to another serial killer on the lose, this one having wracked up 4 bodies to date with one on the way. Using astrological signs and leaving clues to what he is up to, including a coded cipher, King attempts to figure out his prey and take him off the street.
Due to his handling of the last killer though, King now has an FBI agent hot on his tail, Agent Frankie Miller (Holly Dignard). Suspicious of King, raw to the ways of the street, she finds herself at odds with him non-stop. While commanded to co-operate, King does his best to find the killer at the cost of relations with the FBI.
The clues mount up as does the body count. And when the first killer is released due to the coercive tactics of King, he ends up dealing with both killers before the films end.
The movie offers a decent plotline, written by Seagal himself. The action sequences fluctuate between dynamic and lame. Seagal is best when he does all of the work himself, including stunts. Fight sequences where an obvious stand in takes his place seem weak while the scenes with Seagal facing the camera and doing the moves he's made famous bring a reality to it. One has to wonder why this is. With the abilities there, why resort to unfit replicas?
One of the bad things involving the fight sequences is the use of what seems to be hiccup cutting of scenes. The same shots pushed back to immediate back, fast cuts of repeated blows and a close up shooting of intimate fight scenes that were my biggest complaint in the mega hit BOURNE films. Back off and let us see the action!
Seagal's acting has been worse and better. He coasts along easily as King, using a Cajun style twang to make him seem different than usual. And King's secret past leads one to suspect that perhaps he isn't who he seems.
The other actors range from an even keel to some of the worst one line roles seen. Unconvincing would be the nicest way to put it. But all in all this movie is not the terrible film that some seem to think. And if you're a Seagal fan, you should be pleased.

Detective Jacob Stillwell (Steven Seagal) is one of the most celebrated homicide detectives in the country. His brutal delivery of street justice is legendary among the men and women of law enforcement. But on this latest case, he may have finally met his match Lazerus, a cunning and perversely violent killer who is on the loose and terrorizing the inner city. Stillwell s desperate pursuit of Lazerus takes him into the dark, depraved Memphis underworld of street sex and senseless violence.

Unstoppable Review

Snipes plays an ex spec ops officer trying to cope with the loss of one of his men (who happens to have been his best friend). They were captured and Snipes was forced to make the ultimate decision - either let his friend die by being burned alive, or give him the order to step off a stool and hang himself. Snipes was forced to give the order to step forward and has never forgiven himself since.
His love interest, his friend's sister, doesn't know the circumstances behind her brother's death, but insists that Snipes visit a focus group to try and deal with the loss. Snipes tries, but he ends up calling her and asking her to meet him at a diner so he can finally tell her what really happened to her brother.
Snipes shows up at the restaurant early and is mistaken for another man. CIA operatives shoot him up with an experimental hallucinogenic drug that kills the victim in 6 hours, but makes them highly succeptible to suggestion.
As it turns out the CIA made a big mistake and Snipes escapes from the facility. The rest is a cat/mouse chase and a race to find the antidote before it's too late.
By today's standards this is a tame movie, but if you're a fan of Wesley Snipes you'll enjoy this film. It's low budget, but it's a lot better than other offerings I've seen. It's popcorn entertainment, but don't expect any big fights or a lot of action---something they could've elaborated on a bit. The title "Unstoppable" doesn't really match the movie.

Blood & Bone (2009) Review

Blood and Bone (2009)

This movie is by far one the best martial arts choreographed straight to dvd movies i've ever seen. Michael Jai White if you didn't know is a professional martial artist and in my opinion one of the best "natural" american action stars in the business and believe me he shows all his skills in this movie. (It's about time a directer revealed what Michael is capable of).
Not only does it have a great story line but it mixes action and charisma into such a well balanced storyline that you'll be asking for part two once it's over. Also if you're an MMA fan there are a few appearance by some of your favorite fighters. I gotta admit this movie hit me like one of Michael's round house kicks...straight outta no where, and you too will be very suprised by thinking this is a B movie when really it's a A+ action packed film, better than most in theaters right now.
Also, with work such as this film we need to see more black actors and writers in Hollywood, this movie should have been in theaters, and I believe you'll agree with me once you check it out. So once again, go out and purchase this movie, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Okay...this is an improvement over the previous box set...as the films feature a greatly improved picture and sound options..BUT..the foreign sets available though amazon.co.uk have great packaging...very cool book and documentaries NOT included in this set...heck there are NONE on this set. I also note that while the menus look identical to the foreign set (I guess you can tell I own both?)...to watch it with the original language and English subtitles...on the foreign set they are below the picture on these...ON THE PICTURE? ..why? when you have a widescreen do you need to put the subtitles on the images? They didn't on my import...
this is a pretty half a...ed effort on 20th Century Fox. and I agree the last movie in particular is a joke and insult to Mr Lee. It doesn't need inclusion.
I notice some folks take issue with "Imports" ..there is a difference between official licensed DVDs and "bootlegs" the items I am discussing are the DVDs available through Amazon.co.uk and are legit and its NOT just that there are extra DVDs for every movie but the picture is alarmingly BETTER (think BLURAY to VHS better) ...the US set is worth the 10bucks you pay for it but if you are a real fan of Mr Lee and this series of movies you can own versions which run circles around what we are offered in the USA. This is not the only series of films which find better and more restored or better quality outside of the US...and this isn't opinion but fact.

Bloodsport (1988) Review

Bloodsport (1988)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You all know the storyline. It's kinda cheesy and cliche by today's standards, but still... I've been watching this movie since I was a little boy and to this day I never get tired of it! Like someone else said... if this movie is on TV, there is NO WAY I'm not going to finish watching it. The whole thing just never gets old! Wow... for a movie made in 1988, it's still shown over and over again on cable television. That says something about how popular this movie is. It's by far the best Van Damme movie there is. And as a young impressionable boy, this movie is what got me interested in martial arts. I would stand in front of the TV watching this movie while trying to imitate all the moves I saw. Needless to say, I was the best fighter in first grade and performed many punches to kids' groins and spinning kicks to their faces while also breaking necks Chong Li style (ok im just kidding... but it does raise the issue of TV violence and its influence on children, doesn't it?) Anyways, good classic fight scenes that are also realistic (i.e. no wires, just man-to-man fighting). While in a real fight you would never perform the flying spin kicks nor would you take your sweet time walking up to your opponent and kicking him in the face as if he was too slow to react, the fight scenes are definitely entertaining and will put you into a hypnotic trance that will render you speechless and cause drool to drip out of your mouth (ok maybe not). Another thing I like about the movie is the movie soundtrack, i.e. the background music that's playing whenever there's a fight. Gets me pumped up and ready to go spin-kick someone at a gas station... then we start our own kumite in the back alley! Anyways, hope you enjoyed reading my review, because I enjoyed rambling during my review :D

Maya Lin - A Strong Clear Vision (1995) Review

Maya Lin - A Strong Clear Vision (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This documentary film is a unique experience for which it is difficult to find a comparison. On a basic level, the film discusses several projects of artist/architect Maya Lin, a young Chinese-American woman who unexpectedly won the design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial while a Yale student. Her design, a departure from conventional expectations, is now famous, and is the most visited memorial in Washington D.C. Some of the strong feelings that the Vietnam War elicits in people, especially its veterans, is touched upon in moving live scenes at the Memorial and in the controversial hearings that were held in the wake of the design's selection. The experience put Maya Lin in a national spotlight and forced the student to mature very quickly addressing the grievances of veterans and others. In the end, with some minor site additions, the Memorial stood as designed, with the names of all the soldiers who gave their lives in Vietnam etched in its simple, polished, reflective granite. Other works of Maya Lin, including the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama; the Yale Women's Table; and others demonstrate a similar simplicity and poetry that is both moving and powerful. There are moments in the film, as simple as when the artist is working at her drafting table, that suggest something both beautiful and spiritual, providing a deep insight into the creative process of this noted public artist.

Out for Justice (1991) Review

Out for Justice (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Director John Flynn followed up Stallone's "Lock Up" with "Out for Justice", Steven Seagal's 4th film. This is another in a succession of guilty pleasure ass kicking films that Seagal started with his debut, '88's Above the Law. You either appreciate this kind of movie or you don't. Anyone expecting Eastwood acting out of Seagal at this point, hasn't been watching his movies. Now, if you know what you're in for: A real psycho is on the loose and Seagal goes after him, kicking the crap out of anyone in his way, then you won't be disappointed. I consider this to be one of Seagal's most entertaining. Plenty of wonderful violence abound, not to mention plenty of outrageously articulated fight scenes (in butcher shops & pool halls!)where Seagal gains little more than a scratch, if that. The plot! - Seagal is cop (surprise!) Gino Felino who "investigates" (aka violently kicks the butts of) all the slime balls who may know the where abouts of Richie Madano (William Forsythe looking fat and sloppy), the fat crack head who killed his childhood friend. Bottom line: Richie is out of control and on that stuff, going around shooting people willy nilly so Seagal sets out to stop him. Does he? What do you think, cool breeze? You'll love that classic intro where Seagal throws a violent pimp through a windshield. What a way to display the film title huh? Besides, any movie where Seagal confronts an animal abuser, kicks him between the legs, then lets his dog pee on him, can't be that bad right?!
*Look for Jerry Orbach, Gina Gershon, Julianna Margulies, Shannon Whirry, & John Leguizamo in small roles.
Also recommended with Seagal:
Above the Law
Under Siege
and for some real fun...
On Deadly Ground
Fire Down Below
Ticker
(these three are priceless in humor alone!)
