Poetic Justice (1993) Review

Originally , I wasn't going to write an online review about this film. Mainly because it came out , over a decade ago. However , I feel the need to defend it , from most of these other reviews. Therefore , I will explain two important points. 1) Alot of people dislike this film for the dialog. The film is based on people who are frustrated with the directions of their lives and the deterioration of their envioronment ( aka:hood ). The profanity might be abundant in the script , but it was coming from characters who vented their frustrations, that way.Not everyone in the hood cusses. But John Singleton's characters, do. Nobody protested Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas. I'm sure not every Italian cusses. 2) Alot of people say that there's too many things going on , in the movie. John Singleton said , in the commentary , that he deliberately , filmed that way. He was trying to cappture the realism of everyday life and exemplify the fact that things are still happening , irregardless of the problems of our central characters. Personally , I think John Singleton, did a phenominal job of juggling other delimas, from the side characters, without sacrificing the importance, of the dynamics between Justice and Lucky. Another director would've totally blown the task , altogether. As for the dvd , it offers a director's commentary ( which some reviewers , obviously didn't watch ) and previews of other Singleton, films. The film's theme is simple : Love can conquer all. All acting performances are excellent and the soundtrack is good ( old and new school , atleast in '93 ). * The featured cameo appearances, of Mayu Angelo, The Last Poets, and the dedicated acting from Tupac Shakur and Regina King, cement "Poetic Justice",into a significant and unforgettable film.

B.A.P.S. (1997) Review

I thought that Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle were delightfully funny in this film. 2 girls from Georgia go to California chasing a dream, get a little side-tracked, but achieve their dream anyway, meeting some wonderful people along the way. The characters played by Martin Landau and Ian Richardson were SOOO funny - especially when Mr. Manley goes to the record store, looking for "The RRRRRRRap section." I thought that the actors playing the girls' boyfriends were good too - a little kooky, but genuinely good people. Nisi and Micky may appear to be gold diggers, but it turns out they have hearts of gold, and for this, they are rewarded. Who says good girls finish last?

In other words, don't start getting ridiculous, going crazy and all, like Tupac's best character ever, the one he came to maybe live out, some would say. Pac's performance is truly amazing, let's not forget, he was a trained actor before he even got into hip hop, so this maybe shouldn't be SO surprising, but for the fact that he hits it so well because, well, it's him. This is Omar Epps first movie (I think) as well, and he was excellent, as was the guys who played Rahim and Steel. The movie is great and well shot, with excellent music throughout. It's primarily the story of a dj (Epps), really, just trying to get on, and his friends, and the possibilities that can erupt in every man's struggle for respect. Never mind the critics, they seem to critique all black movies the same. This film is unique. It's NOT that violent, especially in the day of Quentin Tarantino or even Menace II Society. There's cameos by tons of rappers, including Special Ed, EPMD, Latifah, Naughty by Nature, and others. But they're small and inconsequential roles for the most part (as they should be). Don't watch this movie as any commentary on Harlem or on black youths or any of that trash. Only racists try to generalize and make every movie that a black person makes into an all-encompassing Statement of Reality. It's overall a somewhat fun movie with a strong bite to it. And it's got a classic soundtrack, the first of the many rap soundtracks that would come out with every movie after this. It's perfect, not too ambitious, doesn't try too hard, isn't a real "tear jerker" though it can be touching. Overall, I'd say its a classic and ten years later, its still as enjoyable.

This film was really good. By the end of the movie, I did not condone what was done, but I understood. How many of us know people who came back after fighting for their country, and they are working jobs that suck, and living a tough life. That's pretty much the message I got from the film. I watch this movie about once a month, I like it that much. Chris Tucker had a role in this film that makes you stand up and take notice. I would love to see him in more dramas in the future. He could do the roles.
