Defendor Review

Defendor

While marketed as a comedy, Defendor is actually a dark and touching crime drama. But while you can't expect Woody's comedy antics a la Zombieland, expect one of the best performances of his career.
By day, Arthur Poppington is a construction worker with a below-average IQ. By night, he's Defendor, dishing out justice with makeshift weapons (reminding us in his gruff Batman voice that "guns are for cowards"). But while the movie starts out light and funny, it evolves into something both dark and sad. With the flood of recent superhero movies, Defendor reminds us that reality isn't always so super.
The real story here is the unlikely friendship between Defendor and a drug-addicted prostitute, in his ongoing mission to take down Captain Industry. Woody is terrific in the role, bouncing between his wacky self and a vulnerable man-child who still believes in justice.
For this being his first directing gig, Peter Stebbings hits a bullseye. There's great cinematography and lighting, and Stebbings playfully throws out a few superhero flick cliches. John Rowley serves up one of the best movie scores I've heard in a while, with a powerful and dark superhero soundtrack. The supporting cast is also top-notch, from Elias Koteas and Sandra Oh to Clark Johnson (The Wire/Homicide).
You will enjoy this movie if you go into it with the understanding that it's not a comedy. It's a dark drama with splashes of humor and violence, and a very powerful ending.

One of the the best and most popular dramas on TV, CSI is often intense and chilling. The scenes showing the laboratory work are fascinating. Excellent portrayal of team dynamics with people alternately working together and competing against each other.
Here is an episode guide, with a tiny description:
1. Assume Nothing (Part 1): After two couples meet in a bar, one couple is killed. When it happens again, the CSI team suspects serial killers.
2. All for Our Country (Part 2): The lead suspects are killed and Grissom suspects it may have been a cop.
3. Homebodies: An old woman is found mummified. A teen is raped.
4. Feeling the Heat: A triple digit heat wave brings cases of a baby locked in a car, heat stroke, and a woman floating in a lake.
5. Fur and Loathing: A man is found dead dressed in a raccoon suit. A gunshot victim is found frozen in a deep-freezer.
6. Jackpot: A severed head is shipped to Dr. Robbins. Grissom goes to look for the body.
7. Invisible Evidence: At a preliminary hearing for a rape-murder case, the evidence is thrown out on a technicality.
8. After the Show: Catherine takes over a high profile case because the suspect is infatuated with her.
9. Grissom Versus the Volcano: Political pressure influences a sheriff trying to find who killed an air marshall with a car bomb.
10. Coming of Rage: A teenager is found murdered on a construction site.
11. Eleven Angry Jurors: The lone holdout on a jury is found dead in the jury room.
12. Butterflied: A woman who resembles Sara is found murdered. Grissom takes an interest in the case. Rated TV-14-SV.
13. Suckers: An electrocution is a coverup for a theft from an exhibit of Japanese antiquities.
14. Paper or Plastic: A shootout during a grocery store robbery results in five deaths.
15. Early Rollout: A porn star and her husband are murdered execution style.
16 . Getting Off: A man wearing make-up is murdered. At first he appears to have been a transvestite, then the CSI team discovers that he was a clown.
17. XX: A bus carrying inmates from a women's prison is discovered to have a dead body underneath the bus.
18. Bad to the Bone: A murder in a parking garage and an episode at the police station leads to a series of shocking discoveries in a case involving a dead body and a missing woman and child.
19. Bad Words: A competitor in a word game tournament is found dead with letter tiles in his stomach.
20. Dead Ringer: CSI investigate a runner's death that occurred during a competition. A couple is killed in a hotel room during a cop competition.
21. Turning the Screws: A roller coaster runs off track leaving 6 people dead. (The roller coaster is actually in Pharaoh's Lost Kingdom in Redlands, California.)
22. No More Bets: Two men who scammed Sam Braun's casinos are murdered.
23. Bloodlines: A DNA test sets a man free that a victim has identified as having raped her.

The House Bunny (2008) Review

The House Bunny (2008)

"I'm an expert in parties and boys. I'm a Bunny! Men write to me from prison."
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Anna Faris (Smiley Face; Southern Belles) is the most underrated comic actress in film today. In a world of male-driven comedies, Anna Faris has become the Carole Lombard and Judy Holliday of our times. Her delightfully funny performance is reason enough to see The House Bunny, a 2008 romantic comedy film written by Legally Blonde screenwriters, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah Lutz, and produced by Adam Sandler's production company. Faris plays Shelley Darlington, a wide-eyed, clueless twenty-seven-year-old Playboy bunny, who gets banned from Hef's Playboy mansion due to her age (she is "59 in bunny years"). She then becomes the house mother of the Zeta Alpha Zeta sorority, and sets out to help the Zetas discover their inner bunnies, much to the ire of rival sorority, Phi Iota Mu. (This movie should have been subtitled, "The Blonde Leading the Blondes.") Ultimately, Shelly is forced to choose between a dream centerfold shoot and the family that needs her the most. Is this movie silly? No, it's frickin' hilarious. Is it predictable? Well, yes. Will it offend feminists? All of my feminist friends couldn't believe that I would "waste" my time on such a movie. However, in response to the film's feminist critics, it should be noted that after catching the eye of Oliver (Tom Hank's son, Colin Hanks), Shelly not only realizes that it takes more than her sexy Bunny ways to succeed in life, but also that her Bunny lessons have transformed the Zetas into very superficial women. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a laugh. This was one of the funniest films of 2008.
