Criminal Minds: The Complete Fourth Season Review

Criminal Minds: The Complete Fourth Season

I am an avid watcher of the Criminal Minds series and I would have to say that this is the best season yet and it isn't even over with. It is not very often that one can say that every single episode was absolutely amazing. Although there was one episode which didn't meet up to the standards of the rest.
As for the rest of the season, thanks to amazing writers and directors, this show has managed to show me things I never thought possible. For example, I am used to seeing James Alexander as creepy, I think that was the whole point of George on Seinfield. But the character that Jason Alexander played was truly amazing, creepy in just the right way, but truly an unsub worthy of the team.
One shadow I do have about this season was the appearance of the character Jordan. At her first appearance and initial interaction with Morgan you believe that this character could uphold the standard that J.J., actress A.J. Cook, carries out in her performance. But sadly after the first spark, her performance is quite a disappoint. In fact, I usually watched the episode in hopes of avoiding her character all together. Perphaps I am just to fond of J.J.'s character and thought biasedly at seeing her go. But I don't doubt the relief I felt as seeing her return.
I can't wait to see the final shows of the season and I already plan on purchasing the DVD when it comes availble. I hightly recommend it to those looking for intrigue, humor and drama all in one show.

Blackout (2007) Review

Blackout (2007)

If a good thriller calls for isolating a group of people with a killer in their midst - the scriptwriters of this film found the ultimate setting. Three people are trapped in an elevator here. And one of them is a serial killer.
However, this is no slasher-thriller. It's a more intelligent psychological thriller with an emphasis on character. Actually, I think this movie has an even better premise and unfolds in a more interesting way than its producers intended.
There's no full Director's commentary on this DVD. However, there are interviews with all the people primarily involved in the making of "Blackout." These people seem unanimous in thinking their movie is about "fate" or "destiny." They see the finger of fate at work in the fact that their movie's three lead characters all have unusually urgent reasons for getting where they are going - yet find themselves infuriatingly bound inside the elevator. I can't see the sense of that. It could be said that any three people being trapped together in a dangerous dynamic would similarly represent fate at work. Or more generally, any of the trillions upon trillions of daily, shifting configurations of people, things, and events could be designated "fate."
No, I think the value of this movie is in the way it limns the obsession of a serial killer. There have been so many movies and TV episodes featuring ever more far-fetched serial killers. But this film makes the viewer feel what must surely be the arrogance, the hatred, and the ravening, voluptuous intensity of most real serial killers.
You can tell "Blackout" is going to be something special with its opening credits. These are filmed over an extreme, lingering close-up of human skin - papillae, pores, blemishes and all. It's clearly the sort of intrusive fascination that a killer probably feels when he sets his sights on a victim.

A Perfect Getaway (Theatrical/Unrated Director's Cut) (2009) Review

A Perfect Getaway (Theatrical/Unrated Director's Cut) (2009)

"I'm just difficult to kill, I guess..." - as soon as one of the main characters of A Perfect Getaway utters these words, you KNOW someone will try to prove him wrong. And they DO (try ;o) ). The story seems simple at first: a couple is honeymooning in Hawaii, while news spreads thru the Islands of a brutal murder of another newlywed couple. The suspected murderers, a man and a woman, are still at large and likely still in Hawaii. As our city-dwellers hike thru the Park, alone and out of their element, can they trust the strangers with whom they inevitably cross paths? (OF COURSE, NOT!) And that's when an interesting twist takes this story from predictable to... well... no spoilers here! ;o)
I did not have high hopes for this flick...I went to see it mainly because I have a secret crush on Milla Jovovich (if I were a lesbian, Milla and Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order would be my dream dates ;-P...). Was the film perfect? No. Nonetheless, to my utmost surprise, I enjoyed this thriller far more then I did many supposed "blockbusters" this year. It had some laughs, but was also quite unnerving, tense, and creepy with a light sprinkling of gore: everything a good thriller should have on offer. There were signs from the audience that I was not alone in my enjoyment. However, the film did develop its creep factor slowly as the initial 45 minutes were devoted mainly to character development. The story needed time before it graduated from "fluff" to "nail biter". It worked for me. In the end, I felt the super plot twist more then made up for the wait!
Two names are worth mentioning (in addition to Jovovich): it was the first time I saw Steve Zahn competently playing a complex "grown up" character, a role totally different from the usual "doofus" types he seems to favour. Also, Timothy Olyphant surprised me with his performance. His acting skills often leave a lot to desire. Not here. He was PERFECT as the perennially confident and "difficult to kill" owner of a metal plate in his head...
PS: David Twohy, writer/director, also directed Pitch Black. Watch the chase scene at the end of A Perfect Getaway. It is identical in style to one of the chase scenes in Pitch Black...

Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez star in this gripping suspense-thriller about an island vacation that turns deadly. Honeymooners Cliff (Zahn) and Cydney (Jovovich) are hiking a jungle trail to a remote Hawaiian beach when they hear that police have uncovered a grisly murder scene and the suspected killers are somewhere nearby. Unsure whether to stay or flee, the pair joins two other couples and things start to go horribly wrong. Far from civilization, a brutal battle for survival begins where danger lurks along every twist of the path and no one is who they seem. From director David Twohy comes the suspenseful film critics call, “a clever, heart-pounding thriller" (Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle).

Criminal Minds: Fifth Season Review

Criminal Minds: Fifth Season

I have owned the previous 4 seasons on DVD. Each time I get them, I spend almost two straight days watching episodes. The fact that no single actor overplays the others, to me, is good acting ...unlike the previous post. I liked this season and can't wait to watch it again on DVD. I like learning about personality types, to the extent you can do that on a tv drama. My heart broke this year as Aaron has to hear his ex-wife's final words and the story of finding his son in the chest. I liked watching Morgan become the leader and seeing the sibling-like relationship between him and Garcia. I am a computer analyst, but always love seeing what else is (or may some day) be out there in cyber technology. I know it's a drama. I know it's all fake. But the looks inside some of our country's serial killers, for example, as Reed and others do, makes me wish I had studied forensic psychology. I am not a critic of arts, per se. The characters are believable and human. Makes me appreciate law enforcement, while seeing their human side too.

Criminal Minds revolves around an elite team of FBI profilers who analyze the country's most twisted criminal minds, anticipating their next moves before they strike again. The Behavioral Analysis Unit's most prominent agent is David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), a founding member of the BAU, who returns to help the team solve new cases, while pursuing some unfinished business of his own. Each member brings his or her own area of expertise to the table as they pinpoint predators' motivations and identify their emotional triggers in the attempt to stop them.
