227 - The Complete First Season (1985) Review

(More customer reviews)It is really great that Columbia Tri Star is brining back some of the class African-American comedies from the 70's and 80's to DVD. These shows were enjoyed by all. The first season of 227 we really learn about the foundation of the characters on 227, Mary, Lester and her daughter Brenda. It was nice to see Marla Gibb in a role where she wasn't a maid but a wife and mother. Her and Lester had a nice family. The late Helen Martin shines as the elderly wise cracking neighbor Pearl and Jackee Harry is quite funny as Sexy Sandra. I really enjoy this show because these were working class people who often found themselves in funny predicaments that usually were solved by the end of the show. Some of the funniest episodes on this set include the episode when the people in the building think they have won the lottery, the episode when Brenda has a crush on Calvin and turns to Sandra for advice and the first episode when Mary accidently hits a car and leaves a note on the car only to have another car come along and almost destroy the car. I hope that future seasons make it to DVD also. The first three seasons were the funniest! I purchase a lot of these DVD's to let my family watch because some of these older shows are a lot better than these new shows.

(More customer reviews)I am overjoyed to see that this wonderful series has finally come to DVD. I have watched it for many years on television and recorded all their episodes (thirty tapes worth). After all these years, it is still one of my all time favorite shows due to its atmosphere of camaraderie, coziness, and interesting story lines. The main characters were so well acted that I feel as though they were members of my own family. However, the secondary actors generally did a very poor job.
For those of you who are devoted fans you might be interested in this list of episodes and summaries that I have compiled :
1. Sick and Tired Part 1 :
Dorothy begins to feel rather sick for no apparent reason. She visits numerous doctors who treat her as though she is crazy since they are unable to diagnose her malady. Simultaneously, Blanche begins to write a romance novel.
2. Sick and Tired Part 2 :
Finally, Dorothy is able to locate a doctor who is sympathetic to her problem. He explains to her that she does, in actuality have a malady entitled Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, that has just been discovered. Later, when the girls are at a restaurant, Dorothy encounters one of her previous doctors and embarrasses him in front of the entire restaurant when she delivers her sermon against the conceit and unwillingness of some doctors to believe their patients when they are truly ill.
3. The Accurate Conception :
Blanche disapproves when her unmarried daughter, Rebecca, decides to get artificially inseminated.
4. Rose Fights Back :
When Charlie's old company goes bankrupt, they send Rose a letter telling her that they can no longer send her the pension she had been receiving. Unable to afford to live on her own, she begins her search for a new job with dire consequences. She is refused at every job due to her age. Meanwhile, Sophia acquires a membership at a Shopper's Warehouse and begins to order massive quantities of utterly useless groceries including five cartons of sardines.
5. That Old Feeling
Blanche falls in love with her late husband`s brother. However, he refuses to marry her saying that she is in love with the memory of her dead husband, not in love with him as an individual. Meanwhile, Sophia is stealing the car to go on a blind date.
6. Love Under the Big Top
Dorothy's lawyer boyfriend decides that he would rather take a job as a circus clown. Blanche and Rose participate in a demonstration against killing sea creatures (such as dolphins and tuna.)
7. Not Another Monday
Sophia's friend, Martha, decides that she cannot bear "to die in inches," and thus decides to commit suicide. She then begs Sophia to be with her as she dies. While Sophia continues to debate the morals of this issue, Blanche, Rose, and Dorothy take care of an infant over the weekend that becomes dreadfully ill.
8. Dancing In The Dark
Rose's new boyfriend, Miles Webber, causes her to feel stupid due to his superior intellect. However, they eventually come to realize that they love each other despite their differences.
9. All That Jazz
Michael, Dorothy's son, returns home to tell her that he has quit touring with his band and has separated from his wife. It appears that he has turned away from his responsibilities and intends to reside with his parents in a state of permanent childhood. Meanwhile, Rose demands an assistant at work.
10. Ebbtide
Blanche's eccentric father dies and she is unsure how she will ever be able to live with his absence and her refusal to come and see him. Meanwhile, Rose and Sophia let the house against Blanche's specific instructions.
11. Comedy of Errors
Dorothy decides to pursue one of her lifelong dreams and become a stand up comic. Meanwhile, Rose tries to become friends with one of her co-workers and Blanche gets audited.
12. Clinton Avenue Memories
Sophia is loosing her memory and tries to reclaim it by visiting her old home. This is a very poignant episode, especially the ending where her long dead, and much loved, husband talks to her and tries to encourage her to return to the more spirited personality of her youth.
13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Dorothy reluctantly helps Stan after he looses most of his money and the girls realize that they should consider others on Christmas.
14. Great Expectations
Blanche avoids commitment when her new boyfriend is hospitalized after a heart attack. As she debates the issues surrounding this controversy in her life, Rose forces her friends to attend a positive think group that gets Dorothy thinking about her general outlook on life.
15. Mary Had A Little Lamb
The girls sixteen year old neighbor comes to their house, begging for help. It appears that she has become pregnant and her father has thrown her out of the house. As the girls try to reunite Mary and her father, Blanche becomes terrified when the convict she was exchanging letters with is let out of jail and wishes to visit her.
16. An Illegitimate Concern
Blanche discovers that her husband was unfaithful to her and that he even had an illegitimate child that has now shown up and wishes to talk to Blanche about the father he never knew. While Blanche is trying to deal with this crushing blow, Dorothy and Sophia enter a mother/daughter contest as Sonny and Cher.
17. Triple Play
Miles introduces Rose to his daughter Caroline. Blanche decides that a good way to attract men is to pretend to be selling a car, one that she rented. Unfortunately, he scheme instantly goes awry when the men become more interested in buying the car than in going out with her.
18. Like the Beep Beep Beep of the Tom-Tom
Blanche it distraught when the doctors tells her that she needs a pacemaker and vows never to go out on another date. Meanwhile Rose tests weight loss products for her job and ends up gaining four pounds.
19. 72 hours
Rose is informed by the hospital that during her surgery to remove her gall bladder she might have come in contact with blood containing the HIV virus. Terrified, she rushes to the hospital to have the test and is told that she must wait three days to hear the result. Simultaneously, Dorothy becomes involved in the Save the Wetlands organization.
20. Twice In A Lifetime
Sophia moves out when Dorothy refuses to let her stay out late at night with her new wild friends. While this drama is progressing, Rose is reunited with Buzz Mueller, her first love. Now she must decide between Buzz and Miles.
21. Sisters and Other Strangers
Blanche's sister arrives in town with good news. Her new romance novel is being published and she and Blanche decided to put away the conflicts of their childhood and become close friends, until Blanche deduces that her sister's sleazy novel is about Blanche's life! While Blanche plots her revenge, Dororthy entertains one of Stan's relatives from Czechoslovakia that has nothing but bad things to say about democracy.
22. Cheaters
Dorothy falls in love with a recently divorced man. However, after he proposes to her she begins to wonder if he is really ready for marriage. Meanwhile, Blanche and Sophia loose their money to a con-artist in the mall.
23. "The Mangiacavallo Curse Makes a Lousy Wedding Present"
Dorothy borrows one of Blanche's men when she needs a date for her goddaughter's wedding. As can be expected, this engenders a massive fight. Meanwhile, Sophia proceeds to put an old Sicilian curse on the grandfather of the groom who deserted her on their wedding day, seventy years earlier. Rose leaves the reception and boards a plane to be reunited with Miles.
24. All Bets Off
Dorothy returns to her addiction to gambling, something she thought she had conquered fifteen years earlier. Meanwhile, Blanche decides to date her co-worker and Rose takes up painting.
25-26. The Presidents Coming! The Presidents Coming! Parts 1&2
The President is coming to Miami to dedicate the new Senior Citizens building and decides that he would like to meet Dororthy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia. As the girls anticipate his arrival, they begin to discuss their past which mostly concerns clips from previous episodes.
This is an excellent show, and I highly recommend it. The characters are so wonderful that you will share their joys and sorrows as though they were your own.

The Facts of Life - The Complete Third Season (1979) Review

(More customer reviews)The Facts of Life was the longest running sitcom with an all female cast and of the 1980's. As years goes by the series evolves and just keeps getting better. Season three is by far better than the previous two, with the girls at Eastland (only one more year to go -- then comes 2 years of Edna's Edibles and 3 years of Over Our Head's Era's) they tackle more serious issues as the years go by and as the girls get older. In this season premiere, Tootie feeling left out because she is the youngest and is tired of getting picked on by Blair, Jo, and Natalie turns to alcohol to prove that she is 'just as grown up' as the other girls. As old as this series is, many issues are still current today with teens, and college problems. The stories are very well laid out and realistic (other than season two where it was kind of cheesy in many spots).
This season marks one of the most memorable episode of the series with the infamous Paint Fight, which gets the girls into more trouble and put on probation until graduation.
Sony has included all full length 24 episodes of season three in this box set. The run time is 602 minutes, which means that The Facts of Life Goes To Paris 2 hr movie (ran as episode numbers 54, 55, 56 and 57 in the series) will not be included in this set, but may be included in the Season Four set.

(More customer reviews)"The Facts Of Life" was one of my favorite shows growing up because all of the characters were so likeable, and everyone could relate to them. There's rich and sometimes snobbish Blair (Lisa Whelchel) who had more blonde feathered hair than Big-bird. Jo (Nancy McKeon) joined the cast in the second season, and was a tough street-wise girl from NY that also had a very sensitive side. Then there's the funny girl-next-door Natalie (Mindy Cohn), didn't everyone know someone that looked just like Natalie? Tootie (Kim Fields) was the mouthy youngest cast member who always had a smart line (picture Dee from "What's Happening" but not at all mean-spirited). Rounding out the cast was Mrs. Garrett (Charlotte Rae) who was nursemaid, seamstress, cook, good friend, listener, and surrogate mother for these girls.
There are a total of 29 episodes from Season 1 and Season 2.
Here are all the episodes from Season 1 with descriptions and original air dates:
Rough Housing (First aired: 8/24/1979)
The series opens with a crossover from the Drummonds of Diff'rent Strokes visiting Eastland to see Mrs. Garrett (their ex-housekeeper). They arrive during the Harvest Queen competition. Blair thinks she's certain to win. So when Cindy considers running, Blair makes some hateful comments about Cindy's sexuality.
Like Mother, Like Daughter (First aired: 8/31/1979)
It's Parent's Night at Eastland and Blair's sophisticated mother arrives bringing with her, her flirtatious tendencies which prompt rumors when she becomes "friendly" with a married man. Blair is furious and decides she doesn't want to be like her rich and beautiful mother. It's Mrs. Garrett to the rescue to help smooth things over.
The Return of Mr. Garrett (First aired: 9/7/1979)
Mrs. Garrett is surprised by a visit from her ex-husband, who is interested in her again. However, his gambling ways rub off on the girls who begin playing the game that he taught them.
I.Q. (First aired: 9/14/1979)
Nosey Tootie accidentally comes across a paper which lists the I.Q. scores of each one of the girls. Of course, she repeats this confidential information back to the girls prompting a furor with Nancy and Sue Ann.
Overachieving (First aired: 3/12/1980)
Tootie's dad comes for a visit and doesn't like the activities that Tootie is up to. Believing Mrs. Garrett is a bad influence, Mr. Ramsey decides to have Tootie removed from Eastland.

Flash Flood (First aired: 4/11/1980)
A flood hits Peekskill which prompts Blair and Tootie to race out to the stables to save their animals. Blair "falls in love" with Mr. Bradley when he comes to the girls' rescue.
Adoption (First aired: 4/25/1980)
Blair sticks here big nose in Natalie's affairs when she finds out that her schoolmate was adopted. Mrs. Garrett convinces Natalie that she's too young to be running after her birth mother because she is too young and not ready for it.
Running (First aired: 5/2/1980)
Mr. Bradley pits Sue Ann and Cindy against eachother so they can each compete to win a track competition. Both girls wind up hating eachother, and it's up to Mrs. Garrett (as usual) to fix things.
Molly's Holiday (First aired: 6/4/1980)
Molly is down in the dumps due to her parents' impending divorce.

Blair befriends two girls who she introduces to Sue Ann. All seems to be fine until they learn that their friends are potheads. This episode was dropped from Nick at Nite/TV Land (during it's regular rotation) because of it's "risque" content and storyline.

The New Girl (1) (First aired: 11/19/1980)
The new year brings a new student, Jo, a tough girl who hot wires the school van and takes off to the Chug-a-Lug bar with Blair, Natalie and Tootie to meet older boys. However, one of the guys they meet happens to be an undercover officer that drags all the girls to jail when they act up (Tootie pours a pitcher of beer over his head!).
The New Girl (2) (First aired: 11/26/1980)
Mrs. Garrett bails the girls out of jail and announces that they all have been expelled from Eastland. However, they can stay if they move in with Mrs. Garrett and work in the cafeteria. This prompts the new premise with a scaled-down cast.
Double Standard (First aired: 12/10/1980)
Blair is sure that an old friend, Harrison Andrews is going to invite her to a cotillion. However, he invites Jo because Harrison is a sexist snob that thinks he can get lucky with Jo.
Who Am I? (First aired: 12/17/1980)
Tootie begins to think long and hard about her race and how she's being treated at Eastland, thanks to a new boy she meets.
Cousin Geri (First aired: 12/24/1980)
When Blair's cousin Geri (Geri Jewell) makes a big splash at Eastland. Mrs. Garret thinks that Blair is embarrassed of her handicapped cousin because she hides out in her room. But it's actually the green eye of jealousy that's bitten Blair.
Shoplifting (First aired: 12/31/1980)
It's Mrs. Garrett's birthday and the girls (except Blair) steal a blouse to give her.
Teenage Marriage (1) (First aired: 1/7/1981)
Jo's cute little boyfriend, Eddie, surprises her by making a sudden visit to Eastland, but she gets even more of a surprise when he proposes to her.
Teenage Marriage (2) (First aired: 1/14/1981)
Jo is unsure of whether or not to accept Eddie's proposal but finally decides to go ahead with the wedding. All the girls, including Mrs. Garrett help to convince Jo that she's making the wrong decision.
Gossip (First aired: 1/21/1981)
Tootie's big-ears get her in trouble again. She overseas some gossip and repeats it back to the girls inciting another catastrophe.
Breaking Point (First aired: 1/28/1981)
Blair is running for class president but things get out of hand when one of the candidates commits suicide. This is another episode that Nick at Nite/TV Land didn't like to air.
Sex Symbol (First aired: 2/4/1981)
Natalie hits it off with Neil. However, rumors fly that Natalie and Neil did more than just study. Natalie encourages the gossip because she doesn't want the girls to think she's inexperienced.
The Secret (First aired: 2/25/1981)
Shortly after winning an award, Jo learns that her incarcerated father, is getting paroled and that he would like to attend the awards ceremony.
Bought and Sold (First aired: 3/4/1981)
Blair is selling cosmetics for Countess Calvet's cosmetic company. The Countess (played by Zsa Zsa Gabor) makes a special visit to Eastland to give some tips to Blair and the other girls.
Pretty Babies (First aired: 3/11/1981)
A top fashion photographer is coming to Eastland to find the "Face of the 80's." Tootie is picked because this pig of a photographer gets off taking pictures of young girls all dressed up as women with makeup and appealing outfits. Mrs. Garrett is right when she calls this "one step above child pornography."
Free Spirit (First aired: 3/18/1981)
Mrs. Garrett's free-spirited son, Alex whisks by Eastland for a visit, with "tales" about how he rubs elbows with other musicians like Neil Diamond and Carly Simon.
Brian and Sylvia (First aired: 3/25/1981)
Tootie and Natalie visit Tootie's aunt and uncle (an interracial couple living in DC). However, they're unaware they showed up right in the middle of a fight.

Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) is a door-to-door cosmetics salesgirl from Queens who unwittingly becomes nanny to the children of rich Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy). As confidante to shy Maggie (Nicolle Tom), mischevious Brighton (Benjamin Salisbury) and junior couch-case Gracie (Madeline Zima), Fran discovers a whole new way of life, living in ritzy Manhattan and meeting the famous celebrities Max hires to star in his various shows.
Bringing Fran back to real life - and always there for a helping hand - is Max's deadpan butler Niles (Daniel Davis), along with her mother Sylvia (Renee Taylor), Grandma Yetta (Ann Guilbert) and best friend Val (Rachel Chagall). And there's also Max's frosty business associate CC Babcock (Lauren Lane) who is noticing the growing attraction between Max and Fran...and is as jealous as hell!
The first season of THE NANNY perfectly sets up the premise and the main characters. Classic eps include "Smoke Gets in Your Lies" where Fran catches Brighton smoking, and introduces him to her chain-smoking Grandma Yetta as a warning; "The Nuchshlep" where Fran becomes the third wheel in Maggie's lovelife; "Imaginary Friend" where Fran accidentally eats Gracie's imaginary buddy Imogene; "The Nanny-in-Law" where Max's childhood Nanny Mueller (Cloris Leachman) visits, gets Fran's blood boiling...and gets Niles hot under the collar; and "The Gym Teacher" where Fran confronts her sadistic former gym instructor Miss Wickervich (Rita Moreno).

"My Fair Nanny" - Fran and Maggie are hosting a society tea to help Maggie fit in at school, but CC tries to interfere.

"Imaginary Friend" - The repeated appearance of Gracie's imaginary best friend Imogene has been cause for concern, leading to a horrifying experience for Gracie when Fran accidentally 'eats' her.
"The Christmas Show" - Max has to be out of town for the holidays. Meanwhile, Fran has written bad checks for her gifts to the children, mistakenly counting on getting a big fat Christmas bonus.
"Personal Business" - Brock Storm, a popular soap star, is trying to schmooze into appearing in Max's new Broadway play, demands a date with Fran as part of the package.
"The Nanny-in-Law" - Max's childhood Nanny Mueller comes to visit and quickly causes friction with Fran.
"A Plot for Nanny" - It's Fran's 30th and Sylvia has given her matching His and Her's cemetary plots, but while trying to return them, Fran becomes smitten with the handsome funeral director.
"The Show Must Go On" - Fran volunteers to be the director of Gracie's school show. All goes well until Max butts in and decides to take charge.
"Maggie the Model" - Max's old girlfriend, renowned former supermodel Chloe Simpson, decides that Maggie has the potential to become a leading catwalk sensation.
