"Snap Out Of It" - Dorothy assists Sophia with "Meals on Wheels" and meets a hypochondriac.
"Wham Bam, Thank you Mammy!" - Blanche's childhood Mammy makes a visit and reveals that she had an affair with Big Daddy.
"Feelings" - Rose thinks that her dentist fondled her - Dorothy is taking the heat because she refuses to pass a popular football player.
"Zborn Again" - Dorothy thinks she has feelings for Stan again while Rose's new co-worker is irritating her to death.
"How Do You Solve a Problem Like Sophia" - Sophia decides that she wants to become a nun. Blanche rear-ends a man while driving Rose's car and he sues.
"Mrs. George Deveraux" - Blanche discovers that her deceased husband is actually still living. Dorothy gets wooed by both Sonny Bono and Lyle Waggoner.
"Girls Just Want to Have Fun...Before They Die" - Sophia is in love with Tony Delveccio, but he won't say the L word.
"Stand By Your Man" - Blanche meets a handsome man at the local library and accepts a date with him - only later does she discover that he is in a wheelchair. Rose wants to keep one of Dreyfuss's puppies.
"Ebbtide's Revenge" - Dorothy must give the eulogy at her brother Phil's funeral. Sophia clashes with Phil's widow, Angela (Brenda Vaccaro).
"The Bloom Is Off The Rose" - Blanche won't admit that she is in a mentally abusive relationship. Rose signs her and Miles up for skydiving lessons.
"Sister of the Bride" - Blanche is embarrassed when her brother Clayton brings his boyfriend with him when he comes for a visit. Rose vies for the Volunteer of the Year Award.
"Miles to Go" - Miles reveals that he isn't really who Rose thought he was. Blanche's plan to buy an expensive dress and return it backfires when Dorothy spills coffee on it.
"There Goes The Bride" (2 Part Episode) - Stan proposes to Dorothy, who dreads revealing the news to Sophia.
"Older and Wiser" - Blanche and Rose model for a pennysaver ad. Dorothy gets Sophia a job at a retirement home under false pretenses.
"Melodrama" - Blanche wants to get serious with Mel Bushman. Rose gets a reporting assignment at a dog show.
"Even Grandmas Get the Blues" - Blanche is mistaken for her granddaugher's mother, and she is flattered by the faux paus.
"Witness" - Rose's new boyfriend is actually a mobster who is out to get Miles.
"What A Difference a Date Makes" - Dorothy's senior prom date, who stood her up, contacts her again and reveals the real reason he didn't show up.
"Love For Sale" - The girls take part in the Children's Hospital Bachelorette Auction. Sophia's brother, Angelo, arrives in Miami, broke and homeless.
"Never Yell Fire in a Crowded Retirement Home" (2 Part Episode) - Sophia is accused of setting a fire at the Shady Pines nursing home.
"Henny Penny, Straight, No Chaser" - The girls accept the leads in the school play when the cast is quarantined but Rose becomes upset when she hears how the play ends.

V: The Complete Series (1984) Review

(More customer reviews)In 1985, I didn't have a VCR. I loved "V" in 1983 and enjoyed "V The Final Battle" in 1984. I was really happy to hear that the struggles of Mike Donovan and the rest of the resistance were coming back as a series. At the time I worked at a local grocery store and, as fate would have it, I was usually scheduled when V the series was on. As a result I only caught a few episodes here and there when I had a day off. It was not as good as the two mini series but I thought it was entertaining. After a mere 19 episodes the show was cancelled and V was gone forever.
Since that time, I ran across friends who didn't like the series. Whenever I found articles about "V", the series follow up was always dismissed as crass exploitation of the franchise. Last week, WB released the series (possibly to test the wind for a new mini series) on DVD for the first time. Finally, after nearly two decades (can it be that long?) I have been able to finally discover what the series was all about. Here are my impressions:
There will be many SPOILERS so please do not read further if you want to be surprised.
1. This series isn't bad. It is not as good as the two mini-series but it is entertaing in its own right. I also think that this show was innovative in the field of TV Science Fiction. Prior to "V", Science Fiction was very episodic. Star Trek, Space: 1999, Logan's Run, Planet of the Apes, Buck Rogers and to a certain extent, Battlestar Galactica all told self contained stories. The plot was resolved by the end of the hour. "V" The series was different in this respect. It had story arcs and continuing plot threads. Every episode ended in a cliff-hanger and it left you wanting more. In this aspect, it has a modern flavor. Like Babylon 5, StarGate SG 1 and Season 3 Enterprise, it tells a big story over a run of several episodes.
2. People could die on "V". For most TV shows, you know that the heroes will make it in the end. Not on "V". Over the 19 episodes, long-standing characters like Dr. Maxwell and Elias Taylor buy the farm surprisingly abruptly. This raised the stakes dramatically and kept the viewer involved in the narrative.
3. The cast was great. Marc Singer was perfectly cast as heroic Mike Donovan. Micheal Ironside ruled as perfect tough guy Ham. Jane Badler was very memorable as Uber-B**ch, Diana. June Chadwick was suitably catty as Diana'a rival Lydia. Duncan Rehgar was fantastic as Charles, the leader's envoy. His fight with Donovan in "The Hero" is classic. He was a great villain and it is a great shock when he is killed after a mere 4 episodes.
4. There is a sense that this is merely a peek at a global war with the Visitors. For the first 12 episodes or so, The Freedom Network newscaster, Howard K. Smith ( A real journalist by the way) reads the headlines on the state of the war. We learn that the Visitors are sweeping through Spain and so forth. This makes us understand that The resistance in LA is only one story in this global conflict. It really gives the story a certain gravitas.
5. The stories are often action adventure tales that are on par with anything that was on the air in the mid 1980s. Unfortunately, the sociological aspects that made the first mini series so memorable are ignored completely. The show, evan though it is watered down, is entertaining in its own right.
There are some things that are unfortunatle about this show:
1. All the SFX are recycled from the two mini series. (I think one new shot was filmed for "The Dreadknot.") Even entire sequences are lifted from the minis. Remember when Donovan is on horseback and is being chased by a skyfighter? Well, the entire sequesce appears again in "The Champion." After a while, it becomes really grating to see the same shots over and over. I know that SFX on TV was really expensive back then but WB should have spent some money on new shots.
2. As the series goes on, it is clear that there was less and less money bugeted for each episode. The first episode, "Liberation Day" has an outdoor crowd scene with hundreds of extras. By the last episode, we only have the main characters walking around on the standing sets. By the end, the production valules of the show looked rather thread bare.
3. The producers decided to exploit the alien lizards by showing them without their Human masks. This was a mistake. The people who created the lizard makeups were not as artful as John Chambers. As a result the lizard appliances were very stiff and immoble. By showing the Lizards in their natural state too often, it undermined their credibility as a frightening threat. The full face lizards were about as scary and convincing as a halloween slip on mask. It became a bit silly.
4. I hate cliffhangers that are unresolved. I can't understand why they would create a cliffhanger for a show that was doing poorly in the ratings. It is really unfair to viewers who watched every episode.
5. The Star Child. One of the big weaknesses of "The Final Battle" was the ending where Elizabeth gets all glowy like Decker in Star Trek the Motion Picture. Elizabeth uses some kind of super powers that come out of nowhere and saves the day. In the series, the Star Child goes through some type of metamorphosis and comes out of a cacoon as a 17 year old love interest. Elizabeth's powers become a crutch that the writers could use to solve any problems that face the main characters. This undermines the drama of the series and cheapens the series. The powers were kind of kooky. The Star Child could levitate objects and people, mimic voices, had a photographic memory, raise the dead etc. She could do whatever the plot required. It was strange that they spent so much time on her character. I guess, as a writer with a deadline, she was really handy to have around.
Well, thats my take on the series. I reccomend that if you like V, chances are you will like the series. It is a more cartoony version of Kenneth Johnson's creation but is worthy as entertainment and a nostalgic trip back to the 80s.

Dallas: The Complete Twelfth Season Review

(More customer reviews)I know I am in the minority here but this one is definitely one of my favorites. As I said before I enjoy all the seasons of Dallas, especially the later ones. This season, known to me as 11, is the last one for Linda Gray. Steve Kanaly has 5 episodes in the middle of the year before leaving for good, and Priscilla Presley had departed. However, I would say their absence is not a big deal since they had been pretty islanded from everyone else by that point anyway. This season we have the final divorce and revenge of Sue Ellen, a new and humorous marriage for JR, further romantic fun for Bobby, and the interesting development of Cliff having a daughter with Afton and being taken in by Bobby alongside JR as a partner in Ewing Oil. Also, powering the season is Oscar-winner George Kennedy, who came in and truly delivered a great performance as Carter McKay, taking over Westar and becoming a new and strong Ewing nemesis. There is an exciting range war for Southfork the first part of the season, a funny storyline for JR in a small town, and then a big trip to Russia towards the end, not to mention the classic where Bobby and JR are stuck in an elevator and are forced to confront each other. The ratings slide continued, and my belief is that this was a self-fulfilling prophecy-for example, Priscilla and Steve had to go due to shrinking budget because of shrinking ratings due to the departure of Victoria Principal, yet, their fans then left and so the ratings went down further. This I can understand, but as long as you're a fan of JR first and foremost, you can continue to enjoy the show all the way I believe. This season Sheree J Wilson was added to the main title, and it also starred George Kennedy as Carter McKay, Andrew Stevens as Casey Denault, Cathy Podewell as Cally Harper, Audrey Landers as Afton Cooper, Beth Toussaint as Tracey Lawton, Leigh Taylor-Young as Kimberly Cryder, William Smithers as Jeremy Wendell, and Ian McShane as Don Lockwood.

Deadwood: The Complete Second Season (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Deadwood is perhaps the best show HBO has made, and that's saying something. There is no other TV show, barring perhaps 'The Wire', which is written with such a keen ear for dialogue and with such fleshed out characters. Season 2 is just as good, if not better, than the first series. It moves with slightly more pace and some of the more interesting characters, such as Cy Tolliver and Alma Garrett, are explored in greater depth. Tolliver - played by the incredible Powers Boothe - truly becomes a force to be reckoned with in this second series. The powerplays between him and Al Swearengen make for some of the most interesting television one could hope to see.
Among other things, we see in season two the return of Bullock's wife and son; the softer side of Al Swearengen; a sadistic geologist with a keen eye for gold; and blood-letting between Mr. Wu and a chinese rival from San Francisco. Throughout, we are treated to a healthy dose of Deadwood's trademark violence and profanity, the latter of which rolls of the tongue with surprising eloquence. Swearengen makes certain curse words sound as if they are as natural as 'if', 'and' or 'but'.
Ultimately, the most outstanding features of this series are the following:
1) Al Swearengen - again, as in the first series, Ian McShane is amazing.
2) Cy Tolliver - Powers Boothe devours every scene he's in.
3) Seth Bullock - Timothy Olyphant's sheriff walks the streets of Deadwood like a cauldron about to teem with furious anger. The addition of his wife and son, and his illicit affair with Alma Garrett, add further tension.
Pick up series two when it comes out. Strangely, it's already out here in Australia!
