(More customer reviews)When Dave Chappelle shocked the world by turning his back on Comedy Central and his smash hit Chappelle's Show, rumors of completed skits, or in this case "lost episodes" were rampant. Now, in 2006, Chappelle's Show: The Lost Episodes are here, and upon viewing, it's apparent why Chappelle had grown so disatisfied with the direction the show was taking. Since Dave is no where to be found, Charlie Murphy and Donnell Rawlings host and present the sketches, which range from Dave imitating Howard Dean, to once again imitating P. Diddy and Lil' Jon. The saddest part of this DVD isn't that Dave is gone, it's how painful some of the skits are to watch. The Howard Dead and Gary Coleman spoofs go nowhere, as does "The Monsters" in which Dave, Charlie, and Donnell are a werewolf, Frankenstein's monster, and a mummy respectively are discriminated against, and the much heard about pixie sketch is funny at first, but it only furthers the notion that Chappelle stated in interviews about it only furthering racial stereotypes instead of spoofing them. The MTV Cribs skit begins slowly, but by the time Dave whips out some T-Rex eggs, it gets surprisingly funny. The biggest gem of the sketches is Dave in a club that spoofs the post-humous releases by Tupac. Other than that, there's hardly anything else here worth mentioning, which is incredibly disappointing. The second season of Chappelle's Show was a step beyond the first season as Chappelle pushed the limits of comedy and racial issues, but you'd never know it once you give this a look. It's worth a look for fans of the show who have been mourning it's demise, but don't expect much out of it. Instead, check out Dave Chappelle's Block Party or his standup DVD's; they are much more worth your time and cash.

The Virgin Suicides (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)'The Virgin Suicides' is a beautiful, understated, and tragic drama, punctuated by great rock music of the late '70s, and featuring terrific performances, particularly by Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartlett, and a nearly unrecognizable Kathleen Turner. What makes the film even more remarkable is that it is the directorial debut by Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, Sofia, best known prior to this by her less-than-stellar performance in 'Godfather 3'! Her sensitivity with this material establishes her as a director to be reckoned with, and a true talent!
The film focuses on the five Lisbon sisters, beautiful, yet repressed by a religious and overly protective mother (Turner), who encourages their intellectual growth, but tries to block any sexual or emotional stirrings. The girls turn their passions into other channels, bonding tightly with one another, and viewing the world as outsiders. When the youngest attempts, then succeeds at killing herself, the family gains an unwanted notoriety, and a group of local boys begin to worship the remaining sisters from afar, gathering materials, and creating a fantasy world about them.
Lux, the most beautiful and free-spirited of the sisters (Dunst), attracts the attentions of the most popular boy in school, Tripp (Hartnett), who confuses raging hormones with love, and begins a campaign to 'have' her. Winning the respect of their father (James Woods, in another excellent 'against-type' portrayal), he succeeds in wearing the mother down, and arranges 'dates' for the sisters, so he can take Lux to the Homecoming Dance. The party provides the springboard for the tragedy that gives the film its name, and catapults the girls into icons that the boys who admire them can never forget.
There are many reasons to buy this film; Coppola's understanding of how boys and girls interact, and her sure touch with their issues about sexuality; Kirsten Dunst's best performance to date, conveying both sweetness, and barely suppressed erotic desire; Kathleen Turner's breakthrough as a character actress, sacrificing her glamorous persona for a stocky and frumpy matron. There are some excellent cameos, as well, particularly Danny DeVito as a clueless psychiatrist, Scott Glenn as a family priest who offers platitudes instead of comfort, and Michael Paré as an older Tripp, reminiscing about Lux, and their 'love'.
This is a very special film, one that you will not soon forget! I highly recommend it!

The A-Team (2010) Review

We used to herald the mindless summer blockbuster back when the explosions were fire and not CG, when Bruce Willis was all you needed to make a movie great, and an excellent plot was something you only expected to find in dramas filled with stuffy British accents. Yes, the majority of film has always sucked but we didn't care because we weren't paying $12.50 to see what's being shuffled down our throats today. As indie film has taken over the mutliplexs, the only escape we have to someplace fun is through stuff with Shia Lebouf in it. Disgrace, I tell you! But not all is lost. We have people like Joe Carnahan who still know how to make a night at the movies a blast.
Now, the critics panned this movie because it's short on plot and way too loud. Dude, it's based on The A-Team. The A-Team was a show about fast and violent missions with Mr. T preferring not to fly and Hannibal loving when a plan comes together. You didn't watch The A-Team for MASH, you watched it because it was cool. And that's exactly what this movie is. Cool. It's a thrill ride from the very beginning to the very end and not a lot of movies can deliver on that promise. Some twists are predictable and you're satisfied when you see it coming. Some are not and you're satisfied because you're surprised. I don't want to spoil anything about the story but the basic plot is all you really need. This movie is a video game in that you first get the reason to want to shoot things and then all you want to know next is where to get the ammo. It's loud and shaky, as is the trend with today's action movies, but not obnoxious like that other "we were framed and now we're super mad about it. As a team because camaraderie is important" movie, The Losers. Plus Sharlto Copley and Liam Neeson are fine, fine actors and you can't go wrong with 'em.
