Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn Review

Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn

It's tough to review movies because you don't want to give away too many details. But at the same time, with Dragonball Z movies, they all seem to follow the same pattern (A *monster* comes or is formed, is dealt with, then powers up to a level beyond the heroes, but the heroes somehow band together and find a way to win, etc.) anyway. This one to me was one of the best DBZ movies. In a nutshell, the movie's about a mistake taking place in the underworld by a bit of a slacker that has dire consequences, bringing the dead back to life while combining loads of negative energy into one being named Janemba (or Janempa - can't remember which form was the fat one vs. the sleek one). After the fat one is dealt with, the sleek one's more than a match for the powered up Goku and Vegeta sucker punches the villian to save his life, etc. etc. (you've seen it before). This time, Fusion's the only thing that may be able to save the day. It was interesting though - you even get to see Freiza & the Ginyu force come back to life in this one, along with another movie villain (albeit briefly... if you blink you miss it) - Bojack and some of his minions.
This movie lines up with the Buu saga and as such, some of the same concepts take place (Fusion, Saiyaman, etc.) So you know what relative power the villain would have - although this one had a sort of teleportation power that was pretty neat, and that it would take a Fusion of Goku and Vegeta to stand a chance. The action was pretty good and I really liked how unlike previous movies, this time the powered up villian didn't spend 50% of the movie beating up the heroes and Goku/Vegeta got a few shots in - leads more to the imagination - I liked that Goku did somewhat okay against the monster before the sword was deployed.
There were a few negatives though to the movie. As for the movie, I wish they didn't worry so much about time, as they couldn't done a few more interesting things with Freiza coming back or Cell or whoever. 2, I like how funimation does voice-overs. But in this movie in particular, they changed the dialogue a bit too much from the original japanese version. You can tell in the end of the movie - the Japanese/American version had Trunks/Goten joking about completely different things. And then at the end of Fusion, the dialogue between Goku/Vegeta, which wasn't fitting to Vegeta's personality. Throughout the argument with Goku/Vegeta - the USA version took away from Vegeta's dejection, eliminating a pretty important piece of their relationship which would eventually close the series, let alone when Janempa's sword crumbled and why (which stems from that). Finally, funimation did a pretty lousy job at distributing this to outlets.
Still, it's a good movie that I definitely recommend for any and all Dragonball Z fans - maybe the very best (not sure if there's another one left), and Funimation was smart to include the Japanese version. Check it out!

Dragon Ball Z - Bardock: The Father of Goku (1996) Review

Dragon Ball Z - Bardock: The Father of Goku (1996)
Average Reviews:

...I really enjoyed this one. It MUST be watched in its original language to be really appreciated and that's the strength of this DVD. It has the original version with English sub titles!
The reason I was unsure about the story line is that it was about Bardock, I mean, who cares about Goku's father, right? It's Goku and Vegeta and Piccolo we all care about, right? But despite my reservations this was a rousing good story giving us a rare glimpse into the past and the lives of the Saiyins. In the Japanese version Bardock comes across as the trained soldier that he is, ruthless and single minded until he is granted the chance to see things from another point of view and therefore begin questioning for the first time in his life.
In the English version they try to whitewash him a bit and it just doesn't work. The beauty of the story is Bardock's realisation of what he and his people have allowed themselves to become in the service of Frieza, making the destruction of his race all the more poignant.
I recommend any anime title that has the original Japanese version on it anyway, but this one really illustrates the differences between the original and Funimations condescending makeover. Watch the two versions one after another and see if you agree with me!

Dragon Ball GT: Season One Review

Dragon Ball GT: Season One
Average Reviews:

Unlike most of the people giving this a bad rap, I actually own the product in question. This is not just some kid howling because they hate DBGT since it's not as OMFG H4RDC0R3!!!1ONE!!!... THREE MONTHS BEFORE IT'S EVEN ON SHELVES. Come on.
The box itself is the same as the DBZ sets, although it is a few millimeters longer vertically, so it doesn't sit flush with the DBZ sets on a shelf. The booklet inside has some character biographies and short episode summaries. There is no "About the Transfer" blurb on the back of the booklet as there was on the back of the DBZ set booklets.
The transfer on here is pretty much on par with the DBZ remasters. Not a lot of spots or scratches to be found. There isn't any evidence of compression here even though they squeezed 34 episodes on 5 discs instead of the usual 6, so I was impressed. You are unable to switch the visuals to the original Japanese, so you're stuck seeing the "comical" Funimation episode titles.
The standard audio track is the 5.1 English dub with original Japanese audio, and they remade the opening track. Instead of the horrid rap track they originally made, they had Vic Mignogna sing the original Japanese track in English. Even if you switch the audio track to the US broadcast version, you will still hear this remade track. The rap version is nowhere to be found. The Japanese track is in mono as always.
Extras (on the 5th disc) are pretty sparse, following the recent DBZ box sets. You can see clean opening and ending videos as well as some trailers for upcoming releases, although they are a little dated. The Dragonball Z trailer is for Season Seven, which released last month. You'd think they would use the most recent trailer for Season Eight instead.
The set includes episodes 1-34 (Black Star and the majority of the Baby sagas), so it encompasses all of the "Lost Episodes" that were originally released out of order. The next box set, featuring SS4 Gogeta on the front, will include the last half of the series as well as the special "A Hero's Legacy" to wrap up the series. No release date was shown on the trailer.
Equipment used: XBOX360 Elite connected via HDMI to a 37" JVC Genessa 1080P television.

Dragon Ball Z - Broly - Second Coming (Uncut) (1996) Review

Dragon Ball Z - Broly - Second Coming (Uncut) (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has a really cool end fight, but overall weak story.
After Broly was defeated by Goku in the first movie, he managed to escape into a Sayin Space pod, only to crash on earth and be encased in a sheet of Ice. Flash forward seven years later, Goten, Trunks and Videl are searching for the Dragon Balls because Videl wants to see Shenron. They stumble across a village plauged by a demon. they volunteer to help only to unwittingly awaken Broly. Not understanding what they are up against they take him on only to be beaten badly until Gohan shows up. With the help of Krillan and a fallen hero they put an end to Broly.
This is overall an ok movie. The fight between Broly and Gohan was cool and the ending reminded me much of the Cell Games, but the fact that most of the movie is more comedic and revolves around Goten and Trunks, and Broly this time around is no longer the ruthless monster from the first, now he is an utterly insane beast who can only say the name Kakarot. Overall this one is good, but not the best.

Dragon Ball Z: Season Three (Frieza Saga) (1996) Review

Dragon Ball Z: Season Three (Frieza Saga) (1996)
Average Reviews:

Season 3 of Dragonballz features the whole Frieza Saga. Although I love most of the DBZ Sagas, this is my favorite saga out of all the others.
I remember I alway wanted to get this saga but it was 10 tapes or DVD'S and the cost was around $80-$100, and I could not afford that. But thanks to the new DBZ season sets I could get this for 30 bucks instead.
I'm going to buy this the first day it comes out.

Dragon Ball Z: Season Seven (Great Saiyaman & World Tournament Sagas) Review

Dragon Ball Z: Season Seven (Great Saiyaman and World Tournament Sagas)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season 7 takes place after the drool-worthy ending to the Cell games in which Gohan obliterates Cell with his one-handed Kamehameha wave.
Now a few years later Gohan is ready to start High School which means no more home school from Chi Chi.
However, directly before this Goku takes part in a filler martial arts tournament from beyond the grave and we get to see Frieza, King Cold, The Ginyu Force and even Cell again one more time. The final battle of the tournament is Goku (duh) vs. Pikkon under supervision of the Grand Kai. This part honestly has nothing to do with the overall plot of the series and was just a filler section before the next arc starts.
Back to Gohan (and the actual story). Gohan is on his way to school, sees a robbery, and transforms to a SSJ to beat his enemies in a flash.
Now the whole town is going on about the "Gold Fighter". So, in order to draw attention from his new superhero Gohan creates another superhero with a disguise so people won't know its him. He creates probably the most godawful yet super hilarious costume and character. He calls himself the "Great Saiyaman" and does little dances to intimidate the enemy.
If somebody who has never watched DBZ sees these episodes as their introduction into the series they probably would turn away immediately, but believe me this part is not THAT bad. I would honestly rather watch this part of the series 5 times in a row than sit through GT again.
Gohan goes to meet Videl, daughter of Hercule, at school and befriends her. She eventually discovers his true identity and in order to prevent blackmail Gohan teaches her how to fly. Goten and Trunks also achieve SSJ while training.
Season 7 might dwell into the World Martial Arts Tournament that takes place next, but probably not very far if it does. Basically mid way through the tournament is when the next Saga starts and we learn of the new deadly threat to the world. Majin Buu.
Season 7 is an essential part of the DBZ collection seeing as how it ties the end of the Cell Saga and beginning of the Buu saga together. The episodes may be most non-serious of the series, but they are there for a reason.
If you've been collecting from Season One be sure to pick up your copy when its released.

Seven years of peace have passed since the defeat of the monstrous Cell, and the Z-Fighters have enjoyed a return to normal life. Goku has eagerly continued his training in Other World, Krillin has gotten married, and Gohan has renewed his scholarly pursuits while attempting to navigate the pitfalls of high school. Two fresh new Saiyan faces have also appeared on the scene—Goku’s son Goten, and Vegeta’s son Trunks!
Now, the time has come for the Z-Fighters to reunite, as the new World Martial Arts Tournament is set to begin. The greatest warriors on Earth have come together for their chance to capture the title of the reigning champion, Mr. Satan—but behind the scenes, sinister forces are at work. An evil eye watches the competitors’ every move, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. The action grows fierce on the tournament floor, but for the Z-Fighters, the real fight is only just beginning!
