Paprika (2006) Review

Paprika (2006)

It's no secret amongst fans of intelligent, adult sci-fi that some of the best genre films these days aren't originating from Hollywood, but rather from the masters of Japanese anime. Films like "Akira " and "Ghost in the Shell" display a quality of writing and visual imagination that few "live action" productions (post "Blade Runner") can touch.
One of the most adventurous anime directors is Satoshi Kon. In previous work like his incredibly dense and ambitious TV miniseries "Paranoia Agent", and in several feature films, Kon has displayed a flair for coupling complex characterization with a neo-realistic visual style that tends to make me forget that I'm watching an "anime". Most of Kon's work up until this point has drawn on genres that one does not typically associate with anime: adult drama ("Tokyo Godfathers"), film noir ("Perfect Blue"), psychological thriller ("Paranoia Agent") and character study ("Millennium Actress").
Kon's latest film, "Paprika" is actually the first of his animes that I would categorize as "sci-fi"... and it's a doozy.
A team of scientists develops an interface device called the "DC mini" that facilitates the transference of dreams from one person to another. This "dream machine" is designed primarily for use by psychotherapists; it allows them to literally experience a patient's dreams and take a closer look "under the hood", if you will. In the wrong hands, however, this could potentially become a very dangerous tool.
As you have likely already guessed, "someone" has hacked into a "DC mini" and started to wreak havoc with people's minds. One by one, members of the research team are driven to suicidal behavior after the dreams of patients are fed into their subconscious without their knowledge (much akin to someone slipping acid into the punch). Things get more complicated when these waking dreams begin taking sentient form and start spreading like a virus, forming a pervasive matrix that threatens to supplant "reality" (whew!). A homicide detective joins forces with one of the researchers, whose alter-ego, Paprika, is literally a "dream girl", a sort of super-heroine of the subconscious.
"Mind blowing" doesn't even begin to describe this Disney-on-acid/murder mystery/psychological sci fi-horror story. It is Kon's most visually ambitious work to date, with stunning use of color and imagery (mark my words-this one has "future cult midnight movie" written all over it).
Kon raises some engaging philosophical points (aside from the hoary "what is reality?" debate). At one point, Paprika ponders: "Don't you think dreams and the internet are similar? They are both areas where the repressed conscious vents." I think Kon is positing that the dream state is the last "sacred place" left for humans; if technology encroaches we will lose our last true refuge. A must-see for anime and sci-fi fans.

My Boys: The Complete First Season Review

My Boys: The Complete First Season

Thanks to a marathon TBS aired last year around Oscar time, I finally got to see some back-to-back episodes of the TBS original series My Boys. But not all of them. Just enough to get me hooked on the show.
Thanks to the Sony DVD release of My Boys - The Complete First Season, I can finally watch all 22 episodes from the show's brilliantly funny first season completely unfettered. The marathon, of course, was just an appetizer. With this Season One DVD, you get the main course with all the fixins. My Boys - The Complete First Season is a 3-disc set featuring all 22 episodes in Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) video; English 5.1 audio; English, French subtitles; Closed caption; plus a host of bonus features including featurettes, deleted scenes and more.
My Boys stars lovely Jordana Spiro (who sounds like Kristen Johnston from 3rd Rock from the Sun) as Penelope Jane "PJ" Franklin, a tomboy sportswriter for the Chicago Sun-Times whose life is surrounded by men, both professionally and personally. Playing the pivotal roles of PJ's guy friends are Kyle Howard (The Drew Carey Show) as rival sportswriter and former love interest Bobby; Reid Scott as pretty boy radio DJ Brendan; Michael Bunin as odd and quirky memorabilia store owner Kenny; Jamie Kaler as excitable skirt-chaser Mike; comedian Jim Gaffigan as PJ's married, sarcastic and sardonic older brother Andy; plus Kellee Stewart as Stephanie, PJ's best gal pal, who schools her on the fine art of modern dating. Look for memorable guest appearances from Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory) and Nicole Sullivan (The King of Queens) as Kenny's hipster friend Trouty and very pregnant girlfriend Kimmie.
Though presented from a female point of view, My Boys, replete with baseball analogies (narrated by Spiro) and naturally witty dialogue exchanged over ritual poker games and drinks at the bar, offers plenty of fun and entertainment to both male and female viewers. Not to mention great production values, not unlike those of Sex and the City. My Boys - The Complete First Season is definitely a welcome addition to any TV DVD collection which I highly recommend. Here are the episodes, plus extras and how the discs will be configured:

Disc 1:

Mixed Signals
Team Chemistry
The Slump

Friday (Director's Cut) (2009) Review

this movie had what the sequels missed out on, smokey. he pretty much made the first movie. such memorable lines in this movie at such quantities, it's hard not to like it. "how do you get fired on your day off?" "what you stealin boxes for, you tryin to build a clubhouse?" i have seen this movie at least 100 times and still never grow tired of it. whenever i can't think of anything else to watch, friday creeps up and inserts itself into the dvd player. great great movie.
of course deebo was a great villian. there is allways that big @ss thug that wants to prove that noone can step up to him. what a better person to play that role then tom 'tiny' lister jr. maybe that guy from the green mile. chris tucker was absolutely amazing as a pothead. i don't think anyone could have pulled that role off better then him. ice cube did a great job as craig and i don't know who played as mrs. parker, but she did a good job too. then you have the corrupt preacher played by bernie mac. hillarious movie from beginning to end especially when they did the flashback scenes with smokey taking a hit of angel dust and finding himself in deebos chicken coop.
this movie had one of the best soundtracks ever put together. everything from ice cube and cypress hill to rick james and 2 live crew. best placement in the movie for the soundtrack had to be when craigs girlfriend got out of the car all pissed off and hoochie mamma was playing in the background. the best hood classic ever.

Just another day. But what a day. A day that shows a lighter side to life in the ’hood. That brought Ice Cube (Barbershop) and Chris Tucker (Rush Hour) to a wider audience. And that’s now even more uproarious in an Extended Director’s Cut never before available. It’s Friday, and Craig (Cube) and Smokey (Tucker) must come up with $200 they owe a local bully or there won’t be a Saturday. Co-writer Cube, director F. Gary Gray and other innovative movie talents lace the plot with shrewdly hilarious looks at family (including John Witherspoon), a preacher (Bernie Mac), a girl-next-door (Nia Long) and all manner of the good ’N’ bad of life in South Central. This is keepin’-it-real comedy for every day of the week.
