(More customer reviews)Released at almost the same time as the awful "The Haunting" I wasn't expecting much, but this movie delivers.
A terrifically creepy and nasty opening and the jolting modern day introduction set us up nicely. An able cast is brought to the haunted house where unspeakable things were done to mental patients who's revenge we witnessed at the outset. Geoffrey Rush is great, doing a nice oily tribute to the inimitable Vincent Price (of the 50's version of this story).
Great stuff follows with two plots unwinding simultaneously, the fake and the real "haunting". The images of the good "doctor" appearing in the camcorder and on the surveillance cameras was terrific. I wish the whole movie could have sustained the chills generated by the "just-glimpsed-then-gone" evil and the hackle-raising stare and smile of these apparitions. And, of course Geoffrey Rush's trip in the psychotic chamber is worth the price of admission alone.
Unfortunately, someone decided they could forego the sinister doctor and his minions and victims for a big CG finish that ISN'T scary and ISN'T creepy. And so the movie ends with a bang that is actually a whimper. Too bad, they were really on to something in the buildup prior to that. Could have been great.
But, the ending is only the ending, and the leadup to it has enough good stuff to make it worth a look.

The Amityville Horror (Widescreen Special Edition) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)In 2002, I happened to see the original Amityville house on Long Island (which was renovated to replace the creepy looking windows). That got me interested in the story and I finally watched the original horror film, which was so bland and lacking in suspense that I don't know why previews of that movie gave me nightmares as a child.
With today's film technology, I looked forward to seeing this new version. Signs were not good when the film's distributors refused to allow film critics to pre-screen the movie for the Friday write-ups. Roger Ebert created his "finger wave" category for the distributor's cowardice in facing the film critics.
While this film is a big improvement on the 1979 film, it still has a lot of cheap shots and comes across as manipulative. What it lacks in horror, they make up for it by spiking the scary music and quick jumps to startle the audience. Although based on a true story (whether it happened or was an elaborate hoax continues to be debated), so many instances strained credibility...such as the daughter walking dangerously on the roof. Yeah, right.
The scene I most like in this film, however, deals with the babysitter, as she adds much humor to the story. Because of her and having actor Ryan Reynolds walk around shirtless, showing off his well-sculpted body, its obvious that the makers of the film settled for a sexed up version for modern audiences to make up for the lack of suspense and true drama/horror. That also strains credibility, but its only a movie...one that's hard to take seriously from the get-go.
The truly horrifying scene takes audiences into the basement to discover the house's secret past that explains the haunting. It is the most graphic part of the film and the scariest. If this film had more of that, instead of trying to be a cheap imitation of "The Sixth Sense" (which is what I thought of everytime that ghost girl popped up unexpectedly for no other reason than to startle the audience), I would give it another star. As is, its an okay film for a few laughs and an improvement upon the original.

The Human Centipede (2010) Review

(More customer reviews)Most of us loony horror fans have sat around and had that conversation where we come up with some of the most deranged and gruesome ideas we can just for the fun of doing it. Well, Todd Six has had this conversation, and then he went ahead and made a movie out of it.
So, here we have Human Centipede, a movie generating a cult film buzz based solely on it's gimmicky and oddball premise.......and what a premise it is! I do have to give it full points for originality. However, the gimmick is where all originality ceases. The gimmick is really all it has going for it. Otherwise this movie plays out pretty much like any other recent torture porn flick. Remove the Cronenbergism from the film and you could easily have this wacko doctor running a basement torture chamber where he hacks off victims' limbs to create artwork or forces people to listen to Nickelback, or whatever the hell they like to do in torture porn films anymore. Basically it's on par with the standard straight-to-video type horror, but with a bit of an edge. That's really all I can say about it.
I really do have to give kudos to the three principal actors who make up the "centipede". They're really not required to do much heavy acting per se, but they have to spend the bulk of the film dirt smeared,(mostly)naked, crying, and in an all around degrading position. They're definitely troopers.
All in all, I wouldn't let the hype get your hopes up. It's got a bit of entertainment value, but it's not nearly as disturbing, frightening , violent or gory as you're lead to believe. To the average Iron Man 2 goer, maybe. But aside from the "centipede", there's nothing here that horror fans haven't seen done before.....and better.

The original Scream basically resuscitated the dead slasher genre in the 90's, with its stand-out cast, plot twists, and the fact that it never took itself too seriously. Scream 2, did an excellent job of keeping the series alive without looking like a pathetic cash-in on the success of the original. It was well thought out and wasn't rushed. The third installment almost went a little too far for me (but hey, its spoofing slasher films and usually by the time you hit the second sequel a series has gone way too far anyway). All three films are clever, scary, and even funny. You definitely do not want to miss out on this set!

Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection Review

(More customer reviews)To be concise and summarize - Great value! 50 movies (I paid about 25 bucks; so 50 cent movies - how can you complain?)
Transfer quality generally awful, most but not all are slightly out of focus (won't notice on little tv!) but watchable. If you are a perfectionist you will not want this. Some scenes from some movies have been cut but nothing major so far (have seen maybe 26-27 so far). Sound generally poor, mono, (2 were in stereo). The B&W movies generally not so bad but many of the color films have serious quality problems IMHO. All are full screen; no wide-screen (that I have seen). This is OK since all movies before 1954 were approx. FF anyway. The ideal customer wants a sample of the 20's-60's Horror/Mystery/Action B movies with 3-4 real classics and 15+ total duds. Still, fantastic value. Absolutely no frills. All movies have small number of selectable scenes, no trailers or ANY other stuff. Packaging is 12 d/s single layer disks each in cardboard cd-type sleeve. None of the disks in my box was scratched (maybe lucky?).
