Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Season 8 Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Season 8

Well, where to begin?
When the seventh season of the show had debuted the year before, everyone involved had delicately altered what had been a winning formula. The episodes became ever-so-slightly darker than in years past, but not so much that it would turn away loyal viewers. In hindsight, it would appear that season seven of the show was a trial run of sorts - to see whether or not fans would accept edgier fare.
With nothing to hold the creative team back, and with only a surprisingly few amount of episodes to fill a season (just eight!), everyone involved went for broke and completely revamped the eighth season of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
Well, where to begin? Just about everything that made the show what it was, all the hallmarks that defined it for seven seasons, were replaced.
The iconic theme song was shed in favor of a darker, edgier track that interspersed clips of the new show with clips from, of all things, the first live-action movie in the franchise. For the next three seasons, the series went with this music track/clip show, even when the main villains, Shredder and Krang, had been replaced by other baddies. So, really, the new track was only truly appropriate for the eighth season, when Shredder and Krang were still the numero uno bad guys on the show. Once they were replaced after the eighth season, the new track became wildly out of place.
The goofy, fun-loving reptiles who ate pizza for three square meals a day were replaced by straight-laced action heroes who bore little resemblance to those who came before them. Even Michaelangelo, the biggest party animal of them all, was now sadly restrained. Fortunately, Splinter was not altered at all, which was a welcome bit of relief.
The smorgasbord of side-characters that had sprung up over the years? You know, Mondo Gecko and Mona Lisa and Usagi Yojimbo and the like? Gone. Members of the Channel 6 news team remained, although, strangely, after the season opener, Irma disappeared completely. Bebop and Rocksteady, everyone's favorite bumbling duo, oddly cleaned up their act and became more competent. Sadly, even this was not enough to save them, as their screen time was increasingly diminished over the course of the season.
And we can't forget about that infamous "red sky" that permeated every episode of the show for the last three seasons. Some fans are still scratching their heads over that one.
So...where does that leave us? Well, where to begin?
With only eight episodes to work with, the creative team cut the fat and really ran with shows that were high on action, high on plot, and that dealt with season-long story arcs, something that hadn't been done since the show's second year. The stories themselves also became a lot less predictable. Accustomed to seeing our heroes always save the day, just watch what unfolds in the very first episode of the eighth season, "Get Shredder!" Suffice it to say, the awesome foursome can no longer claim they have a perfect record.
Whether one likes the new format really has to do with individual tastes. Looking back, there were pros and cons to both formats of the show - there were good and bad things about the first seven seasons, and the same goes for the last three seasons. However, if you've picked up every other DVD release that has preceded this one, I would still recommend purchasing this DVD as well.

**WARNING TMNT FANS**
--This set contains absolutely nothing new from the previous 2 releases of the live action films and the cgi movie is simply a port of the standalone disc with regards to special features and the transfer--
I'm not sure what all of the 5 star reviews are all about for this so called 25th anniversary boxset so far, but let me be the first to offer a counter to those "generous" scores with a dose of the reality of the situation.
This set offers nothing new from what is already available on the standalone dvds, safe for a few cheap gimmicks like 4 cloth masks and some temporary tattoos. The only thing new here is the package art and believe me it isn't worth $30, which is actually Amazon's price, the MSRP is actually more. There is no commentary on any of the movies except the most recent one which is simply ported over from the other single disc release. The transfers are the same that was used for the initial 1998 dvd releases of the 3 movies and the age really shows on the films, especially that of the live action ones. No deleted scenes or making of featurettes talking about Jim Henson's creature shop for the live action films. No Elias Koteas (Casey Jones) interview or anything. Nothing but the theatrical trailers.
Here's a fun fact for all of you turtles fans. The director of the 1st turtles movie (the best one) has come out publicly and stated that he has deleted and extended scenes in his possession that he would like to contribute to a special edition of the 1st movie along with contributing directors commentary if WB were interested. Apparently they are not. They would rather whore out this franchise and continue to kick loyal fans in the face. The only shellebration going on here is one of greed and laziness on behalf of WB Studio with there franchise. This franchise deserved much better for it's 25th anniversary than a cheaply slapped together rerelease. One can only hope that for the 30th anniversary and no doubt next "shellebration" that WB will decide to put together a real boxset as opposed to expecting fans to "shell" out more money for nothing new. I hope if anything that the 1st movie gets an eventual 2 disc special edition that it so richly deserves with a new hi def transfer and all the special features that the director has and wants to contribute because it is the only one that really holds up anyway today. Thanks for nothing WB.
1 out of 5 stars for the piss poor effort by WB for this storied franchise that deserves better. For those of you who already have 1 of the 2 prior releases of the live action movies, stick with your previous copies and don't contribute a dime to Warner Bros. Studio. They put no effort into this boxset. For those of you who don't own any of the movies yet, I urge you to go and pick up the standalone movies for dirt cheap. You can find them for $5 a piece on most retail sites and brick and morter stores and you'd be getting the exact same content on them that is on this boxset as well as the same transfer so you're not missing a thing and saving your money. Don't contribute to WB's lazy and cheap triple dip. Show them we expect more for this franchise and maybe they will listen for the next go round.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Original Series (Season 5) - (3-Disc Set) Review

"Once Upon a Time Machine" and "Planet of the Turtleoids parts 1 and 2" from seasons 4 and 5 were not released in this set or the previous set. Hopefully Season 6 will include these missing episodes. It really gets annoying when shows are not released in proper order, or grouped properly. The episodes are not in proper order on the DVD's, and there is no episode listing included so you have play each DVD to find the episode you are looking for. The background noise volume seems to be turned up louder than when originally aired (at least on the episodes I have watched so far), which sounded horrible on the Tranformers G1 DVD's (simulated explosions added in by Rhino). This is not as annoying as transformers was, but sometimes the background noise drowns out the voices which irritated me. Other than that this is a good set in a really cool Pizza box DVD case which was very clever, for one of the best Cartoons ever made! But the simple things that I posted ruined my experience a little. But I still recommend buying this set in order to get the entire series released. So packaging gets an A+, Series and shows get an A+, but the organization of this set gets an F-.
