Race to Witch Mountain (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (2009) Review

Race to Witch Mountain (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (2009)

You'd think a Las Vegas cab driver had seen it all, especially with that UFO convention in town, right? Almost right, until two solemn children show up in his car. They have a wad of cash that they don't seem to understand very well, an urgent need to reach some desert destination, and a schoolbook way of speaking. It seems as legal as anything in Las Vegas and the money's green, so they're off.
So, a moment later, are the government goons in their black SUVs, in hot pursuit. The kids turn out to be something pretty special. The big bad gov guy calls them "illegal aliens," without stating just which laws they broke or just how alien. Then the chase is on with a few extras thrown in, like a killer robot and the only UFOlogist in the world who actually has a clue.
There's plenty of action, a bit of bloodless violence, some ominous but ambiguous threats against the kids, and a steady stream of one-liners to keep the mood from getting too grim. Maybe this isn't one for the ages, but it provides some popcorn entertainment where no one gets killed and everyone keeps their clothes on. Enjoy!

Walking Tall (2004) Review

Walking Tall (2004)

Walking Tall DVD
Walking Tall is a remake of [[ASIN:B000VDDDWI Walking Tall]. This time the Rock stars as an Army Officer who has come home to find his hometown full of vice and corruption. In this movie he finds a 4X4 versus an axe handle to use as a "helper". I think I'd prefer the axe handle. Highly recommended for fans of the Rock and for people who think Wrestling is real, but the moon landing was fake.

When it comes to laying down the law with a vengeance, one man can make a difference. Action superstar The Rock (The Rundown, The Scorpion King) takes no prisoners as he fights for justice andcrushes corruption in this hard-hitting adventure that's "endlessly enjoyable and a lot of fun" (FOX-TV)! Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) co-stars in this "bone-cracking, adrenaline-pumping" (Arizona Daily Star) ride inspired by the true story of a man who decided to take a standand take back his town.

Tooth Fairy (2010) Review

Tooth Fairy (2010)

Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson dressed up as a fairy has got to be one of the more ridiculous images in recent movie history. That's just one of the things that makes Tooth Fairy hilarious. The movie is filled with witty (and sometimes corny) humor. The plot and character development also feel pretty natural. Indeed, even though the plot device of a boyfriend trying to win the love of his girlfriend's children has been used far too many times, it didn't feel stale.
Meanwhile, the toothfairy "kingdom" or whatever had a great combination of magic and sass. It's set up kind of like MI6 from James Bond - Julie Andrews even acts as the head tooth fairy. At the end of the day, it's kind of like The Santa Clause - but with wings and an attitude.

Even though he must sport frilly wings and learn the magical tricks of the trade from his silver-winged superiors (Julie Andrews and Billy Crystal), Derek's determined to do the job HIS way and prove he's got what it takes! Also includes the Tooth Fairy Training Center--a high-energy boot camp that will get the whole family off the couch and into the fun.

Faster (2010) Review

This was a great modern exploitation movie. It had some decent acting, and contrary to some other reviews - The Rock hardly speaks in it, which is one of the things that makes it a great flick. He has tapped back into that imposing WWE persona, and brought it to the big screen again. His presence, his attitude and his demeanor is absolutely perfect for the role. There isn't an ounce of Tooth Fairy in this performance.
The overall story and how it plays out is very much influenced by the genre. There are so many great examples of this in the film, it really is a treat if you're into that. It's a really fine example of modern exploitation flimmaking. I don't know where CBS films is going to go, but hopefully they will not have given up on this type of movie.
Don't go into this movie thinking it's a highbrow heist film or savvy thriller - it's a visceral blow-em-up action flick that is probably best watched with your wife at the grocery store or at her sewing class. Crack open a beer, open up a bag of Little Smokies and sit on the couch for an hour and a half of blowing stuff up and sweet, sweet revenge - 80's style.

The Other Guys (The Unrated Other Edition) (2010) Review

The Other Guys (The Unrated Other Edition) (2010)

This is one of the funniest movies to come out in a very long time. Here's why:
1. The movie was filled with belly laughing funny bits that were surprising and not the typical cliche kind of stuff. I haven't laughed this hard in ages.
2. There was also a lot of subtle humor, also making this movie very entertaining.
3. Will Ferrell was absolutely hilarious. That's to be expected. What was so surprising was Mark Wahlberg. He was different from his normal hard as nails tough guy roles, and he played off of Ferrell just perfectly. He was so hilarious.
4. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson were perfect in their roles. They weren't on for long, but they were part of some very funny bits. Michael Keaton also contributed some fun to the movie. Eva Mendes was perfectly cast. All in all, a superb cast that made for an uproariously funny comedy.
While there were periods that moved a bit slowly, that shouldn't stop anyone from seeing this movie. The laughs more than made up for any slower times. Also, those slower periods set up some of the funniest bits later on, and they set up the story.
It was really relaxing to laugh so hard. I felt like I had a mini-vacation. I'd absolutely recommend this movie.
