Dennis the Menace (Special Edition) (1993) Review

Dennis the Menace (Special Edition) (1993)

"Dennis the Menace", directed by Nick Castle, is based on the hit 60's sitcom, by the same title.
PLOT SUMMARY: Mason Gamble stars as Dennis Mitchell, a young kid who just can't seem to stay out of trouble. He doesn't MEAN to cause trouble...he just well, does. Walter Matthau stars as Dennis's grumpy next door neighbor, Mr. Wilson, who can't STAND Dennis. When Dennis's parents go away (Robert Stanton and Lea Thompson), Dennis must stay with the Wilsons, and Mr. Wilson is extremely unhappy about this. But when Dennis gets out of line, Mr. Wilson gets so angry that he yells at Dennis, which makes Dennis run away. That's when the real trouble begins...Dennis encounters an old neighborhood thief, Switchblade Sam (Christopher Lloyd), who kidnaps Dennis, and soon Dennis learns that Switchblade Sam has stolen some items from the Wilsons' house (and others from his neighborhood), so it's up to Dennis to save the day.
MY OVERALL THOUGHTS: I haven't seen this film in a long time, but I remember it well. The acting from the entire cast is great. The storyline is light-hearted and fun. Mason Gamble was a perfect choice for Dennis. The directing is wonderful, too.
From the looks of the DVD, there is going to be some great special features. The bonus features will include a behind-the-scenes featurette, a documentary on Dennis the Menace, a special "memories" document with Mason Gamble, a conversation with Walter Matthau, and another conversation with writer and producer, John Hughes. The DVD will also include trailers and a DVD-ROM game. The DVD will be available in wide screen format.
I highly recommend "Dennis the Menace".

Pollyanna (Vault Disney Collection) (1960) Review

Pollyanna (Vault Disney Collection) (1960)

I love the film "Pollyanna" and have been waiting for the DVD for what seems like forever. I am very impressed by it! The picture and sound quality are amazing - so much better than the copy I have taped off TV from the late 80s. The film is presented in widescreen but I've realized not a lot goes on on the sides of the picture in this particular movie; in other words, you really don't get much more action with widescreen than you would have with the pan & scan video or a TV-taped version. However, this IS the film as the director intended it, and I think that's great. This DVD (actually two DVDs!) contains so much great stuff, I can't even list it all here. Let's just say amazon.com's list doesn't even get INTO what's on this DVD. There are so many little treasures, and something for everyone - Disney fanatics, Hayley Mills fans, movie freaks, and (naturally!) Pollyanna fans. My favorite features so far are the featurette on Pollyanna advertising, the one about how they restored the picture/film to make the colors how they should have been, and the one about Pollyanna merchandise. Plus, the audio commentary by Hayley Mills and the (now late) David Swift is insightful and interesting. I would also recommend the "Parent Trap" DVD for more of the same fun. The Disney co. really went all out for these DVDs and they are well worth the money. And if you've never seen the movie - it's an adorable family flick that I've loved for nearly 14 years. I hope you like it, too!

Hayley Mills received a special Academy Award(R) for her performance as Pollyanna in this timeless Walt Disney tapestry of small-town Americana. Here you'll meet Pollyanna, the orphan who brings sunshine into the lives of everyone she meets. But her Aunt Polly (Jane Wyman) is too concerned with appearances, propriety, and local politics to appreciate her effervescent niece. It isn't until the town almost loses their "Glad Girl" that Aunt Polly realizes the power of love and lightheartedness. Featuring an impressive all-star cast and a story filled with fun, laughter, and tears, POLLYANNA will inspire your entire family and prove that the art of positive thinking is just as delightful today as it was at the turn of the century!

An American Tail (1986) Review

An American Tail (1986)

"Somewhere out there, beneath the pale moonlight," there must be a better non-Disney-animated film. NAAAAAAAAH! An American Tail is animator and director Don Bluth's best work to date. The story of a young Russian mouse being swept out to sea while on a voyage with his family to America still holds up very well, even (GASP!) 15 years after the film's theatrical debut. (Wow, I'm getting old!) Fortunately the young mouse, whose name is Fievel, washes up alive and well on New York Harbor. From there, he sets off on a journey to find his family. But it may be more difficult than he anticipated once he comes across the "two-faced" villain Warren T. Rat (voiced to perfection by John Finnegan) and the city's many other dangers that could threaten his quest.
As stated before, An American Tail is very nicely animated, and the incredible soundtrack, composed by James Horner, gives the movie a timeless quality that is one of the reasons why it stands the test of time. Each character is also perfectly voiced. Just to name a few of these talents, Philip Glasser is the voice of Fievel, Dom DeLuise is Tiger the cat, Amy Green is Fievel's sister, Tanya, and as mentioned before, John Finnegan is Warren T. Rat. The songs are also brilliantly performed, the best of which is the classic "Somewhere Out There," beautifully sung during the film by Fievel and Tanya, and again during the end credits by Linda Ronstadt.
All in all, An American Tail is an enduring and heartwarming film that will be embraced by everyone who's young at heart. And so it is to these people that I highly recommend this film. And if you enjoy it, I also recommend viewing the sequel, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. It's every bit as good.
